Well I'm tryingtentando to take a differentdiferente approachabordagem.
40
102980
2704
Bem, eu estou a tentar fazer
uma abordagem diferente.
02:01
And there's two things I do:
41
105684
1618
Há duas coisas que eu faço:
02:03
When I go into a gallerygaleria, first of all, I go quitebastante fastvelozes,
42
107302
4494
Quando entro numa galeria, em primeiro lugar,
dou uma volta rápida
02:07
and I look at everything, and I pinpointidentificar the onesuns
43
111796
4235
e vejo tudo.
Identifico aqueles
02:11
that make me slowlento down for some reasonrazão or other.
44
116031
3054
que me fazem abrandar por algum motivo.
02:14
I don't even know why they make me slowlento down, but something
45
119085
2801
Nem sei porque me fazem abrandar, mas algo
02:17
pullspuxa me like a magnetÍman em forma de
46
121886
2057
me puxa como um íman
02:19
and then I ignoreignorar all the othersoutras, and I just go to that paintingpintura.
47
123943
3118
e aí ignoro todas as outras e vou ter
apenas com essa pintura.
02:22
So it's the first thing I do is, I do my ownpróprio curationcuradoria.
48
127061
2464
A primeira coisa que faço é
a minha própria curadoria.
02:25
I chooseescolher a paintingpintura. It mightpoderia just be one paintingpintura in 50.
49
129525
3296
Escolho uma pintura. Pode ser apenas
um quadro em 50.
02:28
And then the secondsegundo thing I do is I standficar de pé in frontfrente of that paintingpintura,
50
132821
3690
E a segunda coisa que faço é:
ponho-me em frente dessa pintura,
02:32
and I tell myselfEu mesmo a storyhistória about it.
51
136511
3077
e conto a mim própria
uma história sobre a mesma.
02:35
Why a storyhistória? Well, I think that we are wiredcom fio,
52
139588
3598
Porquê uma história? Bem, eu acredito
que estamos ligados,
02:39
our DNADNA tellsconta us to tell storieshistórias.
53
143186
3891
o nosso ADN diz-nos para contarmos histórias.
02:42
We tell storieshistórias all the time about everything,
54
147077
2369
Nós contamos histórias a toda a hora
sobre tudo
02:45
and I think we do it because the worldmundo is kindtipo of a crazylouco, chaoticcaótico placeLugar, colocar,
55
149446
5111
e eu acho que o fazemos porque o mundo
é um lugar algo louco e caótico.
02:50
and sometimesas vezes storieshistórias, we're tryingtentando to make sensesentido of the worldmundo a little bitpouco,
56
154557
3951
Por vezes as histórias, nós tentamos dar
algum sentido ao mundo,
02:54
tryingtentando to bringtrazer some orderordem to it.
57
158508
2169
tentamos trazer alguma ordem ao mundo.
02:56
Why not applyAplique that to our looking at paintingspinturas?
58
160677
3991
Porque não aplicar isso à forma
como vemos pinturas?
03:00
So I now have this sortordenar of restaurantrestaurante menucardápio

04:08
One day, 16 yearsanos after I had this posterposter on my wallparede,

Certo dia, já tinha este póster

04:29
Always before I'd thought of it as a portraitretrato of a girlmenina.
89
253606
3156
Dantes, eu pensava sempre nesta pintura
enquanto retrato de uma rapariga.
04:32
Now I begancomeçasse to think of it as a portraitretrato of a relationshiprelação.
90
256762

Agora começava a pensar nela

04:37

So I wentfoi to find out. I did some researchpesquisa and discovereddescobriu,

A história surgiu-me da seguinte forma:
05:02
First of all, I thought,
100

"Primeiro," pensei,
05:04
I've got to get her into the housecasa.
101

05:06
How does VermeerVermeer know her?
102
290728
2488
"Como é que Vermeer a conhece?"
05:09
Well, there'velá já been suggestionssugestões that
103
293216
1544
Bem, tem havido sugestões de que
05:10
she is his 12-year-old-ano de idade daughterfilha.
104
294760
4423
ela é a sua filha de 12 anos.
05:15
The daughterfilha at the time was 12 when he paintedpintado the paintingpintura.
105
299183
2225
A filha tinha 12 anos na altura
em que ele pintou este quadro.
05:17
And I thought, no, it's a very intimateíntima look,
106
301408
2696
Eu pensei: "Não, é um olhar muito intímo
05:20
but it's not a look a daughterfilha gives her fatherpai.
107
304104
2184
"mas não é um olhar que
uma filha lance ao seu pai."
05:22
For one thing, in DutchHolandês paintingpintura of the time,
108
306288
1840
Antes de mais, na pintura holandesa
da época,
05:24
if a woman'smulher mouthboca was openaberto, it was indicatingindicando sexualsexual availabilitydisponibilidade.
109
308128
3592
se a boca de uma mulher estivesse aberta,
era sinal de disponibilidade sexual.
05:27
It would have been inappropriateinapropriado for VermeerVermeer
110
311720
1888
Teria sido inapropriado Vermeer
05:29
to paintpintura his daughterfilha like that.
111
313608
1896
pintar a sua filha desta forma.
05:31
So it's not his daughterfilha, but it's somebodyalguém
112
315504
1880
Então não é a filha,
mas é uma pessoa
05:33
closefechar to him, physicallyfisicamente closefechar to him.
113
317384
2250
próxima, fisicamente próxima.
05:35
Well, who elseoutro would be in the housecasa?
114
319634
2264
Bem, quem mais estaria na casa?
05:37
A servantservo, a lovelyadorável servantservo.
115
321898
3383
Uma criada, uma adorável criada.
05:41
So, she's in the housecasa.
116
325281
1561
Então, ela está dentro de casa.
05:42
How do we get her into the studioestúdio?
117
326842
2661
Como é que a colocamos no estúdio?
05:45
We don't know very much about VermeerVermeer,

Não sabemos muito sobre Vermeer
05:47
but the little bitsbits that we do know, one thing we know

chama-se "Rapaz a construir um

Gosto mais desta versão
porque alguns dos rapazes
08:15
are olderMais velho and some are youngermais jovem, and to me, this one,
165
479548
3393
são mais velhos, outros mais novos,
mas para mim este,
08:18
like Goldilocks'sDo Cachinhos dourados porridgemingau, is just right.
166
482941
2952
à semelhança da papa de aveia da

08:21
He's not quitebastante a childcriança, and he's not quitebastante a man.
167
485893

Ele já não é bem uma criança mas
também não é bem um homem.
08:25
He's absolutelyabsolutamente balancedequilibrado betweenentre innocenceinocência and experienceexperiência,
168

Ele é o equilíbrio perfeito entre

08:30
and that madefeito me stop in my trackstrilhas in frontfrente of this paintingpintura.

08:35
And I lookedolhou at his facecara. It's like a VermeerVermeer paintingpintura a bitpouco.
170

por esta luz cintilante.
Está mesmo no centro da pintura,
08:43
and you look at it, and I foundencontrado that when I was looking at it,
173
507724
3012
e olhamos para ela, e apercebi-me de
que quando olhava para ela,
08:46
I was standingparado there going,
174
510736
1207
eu estava ali parada,
a pensar:
08:47
"Look at me. Please look at me."
175
511943
2953
"Olha para mim.
Por favor, olha para mim."
08:50
And he didn't look at me. He was still looking at his cardscartões,
176
514896
2736
E ele não olhou para mim.
Continuou a olhar para as suas cartas e
08:53
and that's one of the seductivesedutor elementselementos of this paintingpintura is,
177
517632
2752
esse é um dos elementos
sedutores desta pintura.
08:56
he's so focusedfocado on what he's doing that he doesn't look at us.
178
520384
4490
Ele está tão concentrado no que está a fazer
que não olha para nós.
09:00
And that is, to me, the signplaca of a masterpieceobra-prima,
179
524874
3893
E isso é, para mim,
o sinal de uma obra-prima,
09:04
of a paintingpintura when there's a lackfalta of resolutionresolução.
180
528767
3977
de uma pintura quando falta definição.
09:08
He's never going to look at me.
181
532744
1521
Ele nunca vai olhar para mim.
09:10
So I was thinkingpensando of a storyhistória where,
182
534265
1679
Então comecei a pensar
numa história em que,
09:11
if I'm in this positionposição, who could be there looking at him?
183
535944
3216
se eu estivesse nesta posição,
quem poderia ali estar a olhar para ele?
09:15
Not the painterpintor, I don't want to think about the painterpintor.
184
539160
2202
Não o pintor.
Não quero pensar no pintor.
09:17
I'm thinkingpensando of an olderMais velho versionversão of himselfele mesmo.
185
541362
2526
Estou a pensar numa versão
mais velha dele mesmo.
09:19
He's a man, a servantservo, an olderMais velho servantservo looking at this youngermais jovem servantservo,
186
543888
5945
É um homem, um criado, um criado mais velho a olhar para este criado mais novo.
09:25
sayingdizendo, "Look at me. I want to warnadvertir you about

188
552304
2450
"aquilo por que vais passar.
Por favor, olha para mim."
09:30
And he never does.
189
554754
1526
E ele nunca olha.
09:32
And that lackfalta of resolutionresolução, the lackfalta of resolutionresolução in "GirlMenina with a PearlPérola EarringBrinco" --
190
556280
3803
E essa falta de definição, a falta de definição em "Rapariga com Brinco de Pérola"...
09:35
we don't know if she's happyfeliz or sadtriste.
191
560083
2044
não sabemos se ela está feliz ou triste.
09:38
I've writtenescrito an entireinteira novelromance about her,

Eu escrevi um romance inteiro sobre ela,
09:39
and I still don't know if she's happyfeliz or sadtriste.
193
563776
2000
e continuo sem saber se
ela está feliz ou triste.
09:41
Again and again, back to the paintingpintura,
194
565776
2104
Vez após vez,
regressamos à pintura,
09:43
looking for the answerresponda, looking for the storyhistória to fillencher in that gapgap.
195
567880
4681
à procura da resposta, à procura da história
que preencha os espaços em branco.
09:48
And we maypode make a storyhistória, and it satisfiessatisfaz us momentarilymomentaneamente,
196
572561
3447
E nós podemos criar uma história,
que nos satisfaça momentaneamente,
09:51
but not really, and we come back again and again.
197
576008
5815
mas não verdadeiramente, pelo que
continuamos a regressar sempre.
09:57

11:00
The thirdterceiro thing that madefeito me stop in my trackstrilhas

11:22
