02:01
And there's two things I do:
41
105684
1618
Y hay dos cosas que hago:
02:03
When I go into a gallerygalería, first of all, I go quitebastante fastrápido,
42
107302
4494
02:07
and I look at everything, and I pinpointdeterminar con precisión the onesunos
43
111796
4235
02:11
that make me slowlento down for some reasonrazón or other.
44
116031
3054
me detienen por una u otra razón.
02:14
I don't even know why they make me slowlento down, but something
45
119085
2801
02:17
pullstira me like a magnetimán
46
121886
2057
atrae como un imán
02:19
and then I ignoreignorar all the othersotros, and I just go to that paintingpintura.
47
123943
3118
e ignoro todas las demás y voy solo a esa pintura.
02:22
So it's the first thing I do is, I do my ownpropio curationcuracion.
48
127061
2464
02:25
I chooseescoger a paintingpintura. It mightpodría just be one paintingpintura in 50.
49
129525
3296
Escojo una pintura. Puede ser solo una entre 50.
02:28
And then the secondsegundo thing I do is I standestar in frontfrente of that paintingpintura,
50
132821
3690
02:32
and I tell myselfmí mismo a storyhistoria about it.
51
136511
3077
y contarme una historia sobre ella.
02:35
Why a storyhistoria? Well, I think that we are wiredcableado,
52
139588
3598
¿Qué historia? Bueno, creo que estamos conectados,
02:39
our DNAADN tellsdice us to tell storiescuentos.
53
143186
3891
nuestro ADN nos dice que contemos historias.
02:42
We tell storiescuentos all the time about everything,
54
147077
2369
Contamos historias constantemente acerca de todo,
02:45
and I think we do it because the worldmundo is kindtipo of a crazyloca, chaoticcaótico placelugar,
55
149446
5111
02:50
and sometimesa veces storiescuentos, we're tryingmolesto to make sensesentido of the worldmundo a little bitpoco,
56
154557
3951
02:54
tryingmolesto to bringtraer some orderorden to it.
57
158508
2169
tratan de ponerle algún orden.
02:56
Why not applyaplicar that to our looking at paintingspinturas?
58
160677
3991
03:00
So I now have this sortordenar of restaurantrestaurante menumenú

85
241805

04:21
And it was the first time I'd ever thought that

Fue la primera vez que pensé que

04:29
Always before I'd thought of it as a portraitretrato of a girlniña.
89

Siempre pensé que era el retrato de una niña;
04:32
Now I beganempezó to think of it as a portraitretrato of a relationshiprelación.
90

04:37
And I thought, well, what is that relationshiprelación?

Y pienso, bien, ¿de qué relación?
04:40
So I wentfuimos to find out. I did some researchinvestigación and discovereddescubierto,

99

2596
He aquí como llegué a la historia.
05:02
First of all, I thought,
100
286759
1877
Primero, pensé:
05:04
I've got to get her into the housecasa.
101
288636
2092
tengo que llevarla a la casa.
05:06
How does VermeerVermeer know her?
102
290728
2488
¿Cómo pudo conocerla Vermeer?
05:09
Well, there'vehay been suggestionssugerencias that
103
293216
1544
Bueno, ha habido sugerencias de que
05:10
she is his 12-year-old-edad daughterhija.
104
294760
4423
es su hija de 12 años.
05:15
The daughterhija at the time was 12 when he paintedpintado the paintingpintura.
105
299183
2225
05:17
And I thought, no, it's a very intimateíntimo look,
106
301408
2696
05:20
but it's not a look a daughterhija givesda her fatherpadre.
107
304104
2184
pero no es la mirada de una hija a su padre;
05:22
For one thing, in Dutchholandés paintingpintura of the time,
108
306288
1840
05:24
if a woman'smujer mouthboca was openabierto, it was indicatingindicando sexualsexual availabilitydisponibilidad.
109
308128
3592
05:27
It would have been inappropriateinapropiado for VermeerVermeer
110
311720
1888
Hubiera sido inapropiado para Vermeer
05:29
to paintpintar his daughterhija like that.
111
313608
1896
pintar a su hija así.
05:31
So it's not his daughterhija, but it's somebodyalguien
112
315504
1880
05:33
closecerca to him, physicallyfísicamente closecerca to him.
113
317384
2250
cercana, físicamente cercana a él.
05:35
Well, who elsemás would be in the housecasa?
114
319634
2264
05:37
A servantservidor, a lovelyencantador servantservidor.
115
321898
3383
Una criada, una preciosa criada.
05:41
So, she's in the housecasa.
116
325281
1561
Bien, ella ya está en la casa.
05:42
How do we get her into the studioestudio?
117
326842
2661
¿Cómo la llevamos al estudio?
05:45
We don't know very much about VermeerVermeer,
118
329503
2134
No sabemos mayor cosa de Vermeer,
05:47
but the little bitsbits that we do know, one thing we know
119
331637
2139
05:49
is that he marriedcasado a Catholiccatólico womanmujer, they livedvivió with her mothermadre
120
333776
2991
05:52
in a housecasa where he had his ownpropio roomhabitación
121
336767
2273
05:54
where he -- his studioestudio. He alsoademás had 11 childrenniños.
122
339040

donde él... su estudio. También que tenía 11 hijos.
05:59
It would have been a chaoticcaótico, noisyruidoso householdcasa.
123
343323
3077
Debía haber sido una casa desordenada, ruidosa.
06:02
And if you've seenvisto Vermeer'sVermeer paintingspinturas before,
124

06:05
you know that they're incrediblyincreíblemente calmcalma and quiettranquilo.
125
349344
3864
sabrán que son increíblemente apacibles y serenas.
06:09
How does a painterpintor paintpintar suchtal calmcalma, quiettranquilo paintingspinturas with 11 kidsniños around?
126
353208
3896
06:13
Well, he compartmentalizescompartimenta his life.
127
357104

Bueno, fraccionando su vida.
06:15
He getsse pone to his studioestudio, and he saysdice, "NobodyNadie comesproviene in here.

07:53
is calledllamado "BoyChico Buildingedificio a HouseCasa of CardsTarjetas" by ChardinChardin.
159
457941
3247
se llama «Castillo de naipes» de Chardin,
07:57
He's an 18th-centurysiglo x Frenchfrancés painterpintor bestmejor knownconocido for his still lifeslifes,

08:04
And in facthecho, he paintedpintado fourlas cuatro versionsversiones of this paintingpintura,

08:11
I like this versionversión the bestmejor, because some of the boyschicos
164
476084
3464
08:15
are oldermayor and some are youngermas joven, and to me, this one,
165
479548
3393
08:18
like Goldilocks'sRicitos de oro porridgegachas de avena, is just right.
166
482941
2952
08:21
He's not quitebastante a childniño, and he's not quitebastante a man.
167
485893
3991
08:25
He's absolutelyabsolutamente balancedequilibrado betweenEntre innocenceinocencia and experienceexperiencia,
168
489884
4793
08:30
and that madehecho me stop in my trackspistas in frontfrente of this paintingpintura.
169
494677
4483
08:35
And I lookedmirado at his facecara. It's like a VermeerVermeer paintingpintura a bitpoco.
170
499160
3717
Miré su cara. Es casi como un Vermeer;
08:38
The lightligero comesproviene in from the left, his facecara is bathedbañado
171
502877
2623
08:41
in this glowingbrillante lightligero. It's right in the centercentrar of the paintingpintura,
172
505500
2224
de esta luz brillante. Está justo en el centro del cuadro,
08:43
and you look at it, and I foundencontró that when I was looking at it,
173
507724
3012
08:46
I was standingen pie there going,
174
510736
1207
estaba parada allí pidiendo,
08:47
"Look at me. Please look at me."
175
511943
2953
«Mírame. Por favor, mírame».
08:50
And he didn't look at me. He was still looking at his cardscartas,
176
514896
2736
Y no lo hace. Sigue mirando sus cartas,
08:53
and that's one of the seductiveseductor elementselementos of this paintingpintura is,
177
517632
2752
08:56
he's so focusedcentrado on what he's doing that he doesn't look at us.
178
520384
4490
09:00
And that is, to me, the signfirmar of a masterpieceobra maestra,
179
524874
3893
09:04
of a paintingpintura when there's a lackausencia of resolutionresolución.
180
528767
3977
de la pintura, cuando no hay resolución.
09:08
He's never going to look at me.
181
532744
1521
Él nunca va a mirarme.
09:10
So I was thinkingpensando of a storyhistoria where,
182
534265
1679
09:11
if I'm in this positionposición, who could be there looking at him?
183
535944
3216
09:15
Not the painterpintor, I don't want to think about the painterpintor.
184
539160
2202
09:17
I'm thinkingpensando of an oldermayor versionversión of himselfél mismo.
185
541362
2526
09:19
He's a man, a servantservidor, an oldermayor servantservidor looking at this youngermas joven servantservidor,
186
543888
5945
09:25
sayingdiciendo, "Look at me. I want to warnadvertir you about
187
549833
2471
diciendo: «Mírame. Quiero advertirte sobre
09:28
what you're about to go throughmediante. Please look at me."
188
552304
2450
lo que te va a pasar. Mírame por favor».
09:30
And he never does.
189
554754
1526
Y él nunca lo hace.
09:32
And that lackausencia of resolutionresolución, the lackausencia of resolutionresolución in "GirlNiña with a PearlPerla EarringArete" --
190
556280
3803
09:35
we don't know if she's happycontento or sadtriste.
191
560083
2044
09:38
I've writtenescrito an entiretodo novelnovela about her,
192
562127
1649
He escrito toda una novela sobre ella,
09:39
and I still don't know if she's happycontento or sadtriste.
193
563776
2000
y aún no sé si es feliz o triste.
09:41
Again and again, back to the paintingpintura,
194
565776
2104
09:43
looking for the answerresponder, looking for the storyhistoria to fillllenar in that gapbrecha.
195
567880
4681
09:48
And we maymayo make a storyhistoria, and it satisfiessatisface us momentarilymomentáneamente,
196
572561
3447
09:51
but not really, and we come back again and again.
197
576008
5815
09:57

10:55

¿Qué estaría pensando para sonrojarse así?
11:00
The thirdtercero thing that madehecho me stop in my trackspistas

11:04
is his absolutelyabsolutamente gorgeousmaravilloso doubletdoblete.

11:12
is it's sortordenar of snugajustado and puffyhinchado; it's like a duvetedredón spreaduntado over a bedcama.
224
656256

11:16
I keptmantenido thinkingpensando of bedscamas and redrojo cheekslas mejillas,

what's the last thing I'm going to put in there?
