ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Martin Hanczyc - Chemist
Martin Hanczyc explores the path between living and nonliving systems, using chemical droplets to study behavior of the earliest cells.

Why you should listen

Martin Hanczyc is developing novel synthetic chemical systems based on the properties of living systems, in a quest to understand how life forms. These synthetic systems, or "protocells," are model systems of primitive living cells and chemical examples of artificial life. As Rachel Armstrong puts it: "Although the protocell model system is just a chemically modified oil droplet, its dynamics are astonishingly varied and complex."

He's based at the Institute of Physics and Chemistry and the Center for Fundamental Living Technology (FLinT) in Denmark. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.

de la creación de una especie de vida artificial.

Entonces, ¿cuáles son las características
01:25
talkinghablando about? These are them.
31
70000
2000
de las que hablo? Son estas:
01:27
We considerconsiderar first that life has a bodycuerpo.
32
72000

consideramos que la vida tiene un cuerpo.
01:29
Now this is necessarynecesario to distinguishdistinguir the selfyo

Life alsoademás has a metabolismmetabolismo. Now this is a

La vida también tiene un metabolismo.

01:40
so it can maintainmantener and buildconstruir itselfsí mismo.

3000
para mantenerse y autoconstruirse.
01:43
Life alsoademás has a kindtipo of inheritableheredable informationinformación.
39
88000
2000
La vida también tiene información heredada.
01:45
Now we, as humanshumanos, we storealmacenar our informationinformación

01:52
If we couplePareja the first two -- the bodycuerpo and the metabolismmetabolismo --
43
97000
2000
Si juntamos los primeros dos, el cuerpo y el metabolismo,
01:54
we can come up with a systemsistema that could
44
99000
2000
podríamos crear un sistema capaz de
01:56
perhapsquizás movemovimiento and replicatereproducir exactamente, and if we
45
101000
2000
moverse y duplicarse, y si
01:58
coupledacoplado these now to inheritableheredable informationinformación,
46
103000
3000
reuniésemos estas dos condiciones con información heredada
02:01
we can come up with a systemsistema that would be
47
106000

podríamos crear un sistema
02:03
more lifelikenatural, and would perhapsquizás evolveevolucionar.
48
108000
2000
más parecido a la vida y que quizá pudiese evolucionar.
02:05
And so these are the things we will try to do
49
110000
2000
Y esto es lo que intentaremos hacer
02:07
in the lablaboratorio, make some experimentsexperimentos that have
50
112000
2000
en el laboratorio, hacer algunos experimentos que tengan
02:09
one or more of these characteristicscaracterísticas of life.
51
114000
3000
una o más de estas características de vida.
02:12
So how do we do this? Well, we use
52
117000

¿Cómo lo logramos? Bien, usamos
02:14
a modelmodelo systemsistema that we termtérmino a protocellprotocélula.
53
119000
2000
un sistema modelo al cual llamamos protocélula.
02:16
You mightpodría think of this as kindtipo of like a
54
121000
2000
Podría pensarse como una especie de
02:18
primitiveprimitivo cellcelda. It is a simplesencillo chemicalquímico
55
123000
2000
célula primitiva. Es el modelo químico simple
02:20
modelmodelo of a livingvivo cellcelda, and if you considerconsiderar
56
125000
3000
de una célula viva, y si se considera
02:23
for exampleejemplo a cellcelda in your bodycuerpo maymayo have
57
128000

por ejemplo, que una célula de nuestro cuerpo puede
02:25
on the orderorden of millionsmillones of differentdiferente typestipos
58
130000

llegar a tener millones de tipos de moléculas
02:27
of moleculesmoléculas that need to come togetherjuntos,
59
132000
2000
diferentes que deben unirse,
02:29
playjugar togetherjuntos in a complexcomplejo networkred
60
134000
2000
interactuar juntas en una red compleja,
02:31
to produceProduce something that we call aliveviva.
61
136000
3000
para producir algo que podamos llamar vivo.
02:34
In the laboratorylaboratorio what we want to do
62
139000
2000
Lo que queremos lograr en el laboratorio
02:36
is much the samemismo, but with on the orderorden of
63
141000
2000
es similar, pero con
02:38
tensdecenas of differentdiferente typestipos of moleculesmoléculas --
64
143000
2000
decenas de distintos tipos de moléculas;
02:40
so a drasticdrástico reductionreducción in complexitycomplejidad, but still
65
145000
2000
por ende con una reducción drástica en complejidad,
02:42
tryingmolesto to produceProduce something that looksmiradas lifelikenatural.
66
147000
3000
pero aún así, produciendo algo similar a la vida.
02:45
And so what we do is, we startcomienzo simplesencillo
67
150000
2000
Entonces comenzamos desde lo más simple
02:47
and we work our way up to livingvivo systemssistemas.
68
152000
3000
hasta los organismos vivientes.

03:30
So we startcomienzo simplesencillo, we make some structuresestructuras
89
195000

Empezaremos con algo simple, haciendo algunas estructuras
03:32
that maymayo have some of these characteristicscaracterísticas
90
197000
2000
que puedan tener algunas de estas características
03:34
of life, and then we try to developdesarrollar that

de vida, y después las desarrollamos
03:36
to becomevolverse more lifelikenatural.
92
201000
2000
para que se asemejen a seres vivientes.
03:38
This is how we can startcomienzo to make a protocellprotocélula.
93
203000
2000
Así es como empezamos a hacer una protocélula.
03:40
We use this ideaidea calledllamado self-assemblyautoensamblaje.
94
205000
2000
Usamos lo que se conoce como autoensamblaje.
03:42
What that meansmedio is, I can mixmezcla some
95
207000
2000
Esto quiere decir que si mezclo algunos
03:44
chemicalsquímicos togetherjuntos in a testprueba tubetubo in my lablaboratorio,
96
209000
2000
químicos en un tubo de ensayo en mi laboratorio,
03:46
and these chemicalsquímicos will startcomienzo to self-associateauto-asociado
97
211000
2000
estos químicos van a empezar a autoasociarse
03:48
to formformar largermás grande and largermás grande structuresestructuras.
98
213000
2000
para formar estructuras cada vez más grandes.
03:50
So say on the orderorden of tensdecenas of thousandsmiles,
99
215000
2000
De las miles de moléculas,
03:52
hundredscientos of thousandsmiles of moleculesmoléculas will
100
217000
2000
unos cientos se unirán
03:54
come togetherjuntos to formformar a largegrande structureestructura
101
219000
2000
para formar una estructura grande
03:56
that didn't existexiste before.
102
221000
2000
que no existía antes.
03:58
And in this particularespecial exampleejemplo,
103
223000
2000
Y en este caso en particular,
04:00
what I tooktomó is some membranemembrana moleculesmoléculas,
104
225000
2000
tomé algunas moléculas de membranas,
04:02
mixedmezclado those togetherjuntos in the right environmentambiente,
105
227000
2000
las mezclé en el ambiente adecuado,
04:04
and withindentro secondssegundos it formsformularios these rathermás bien
106
229000

y en cuestión de segundos se forman unas
04:06
complexcomplejo and beautifulhermosa structuresestructuras here.
107
231000
2000
estructuras complejas y hermosas.
04:08
These membranesmembranas are alsoademás quitebastante similarsimilar,
108
233000
2000
Estas membranas también son bastante similares,
04:10
morphologicallymorfológicamente and functionallyfuncionalmente,
109
235000
2000
morfológica y funcionalmente,
04:12
to the membranesmembranas in your bodycuerpo,
110
237000
2000
a las membranas que hay en sus cuerpos,
04:14
and we can use these, as they say,
111
239000
2000
y podemos usarlas, como quien dice,
04:16
to formformar the bodycuerpo of our protocellprotocélula.
112
241000
2000
para formar el cuerpo de nuestra protocélula.
04:18
LikewiseIgualmente,
113
243000
1000
Del mismo modo,
04:19
we can work with oilpetróleo and wateragua systemssistemas.
114
244000
2000
podemos trabajar con sistemas de aceite y agua.
04:21
As you know, when you put oilpetróleo and wateragua togetherjuntos,
115
246000
2000
Como saben, el agua y el aceite
04:23
they don't mixmezcla, but throughmediante self-assemblyautoensamblaje
116
248000
2000
no se mezclan, pero gracias al autoensamblaje
04:25
we can get a nicebonito oilpetróleo dropletgotita to formformar,
117
250000
2000
podemos formar una linda gota de aceite,
04:27
and we can actuallyactualmente use this as a bodycuerpo for
118
252000
2000
y usarla como cuerpo para
04:29
our artificialartificial organismorganismo or for our protocellprotocélula,
119
254000
2000
nuestro organismo artificial o para nuestra protocélula,
04:31
as you will see laterluego.
120
256000
2000
como se darán cuenta luego.
04:33
So that's just formingformando some bodycuerpo stuffcosas, right?
121
258000
2000
Todo eso es para formar el cuerpo, ¿verdad?
04:35
Some architecturesarquitecturas.
122
260000
2000
La arquitectura.
04:37
What about the other aspectsaspectos of livingvivo systemssistemas?
123
262000
2000
¿Y los otros aspectos de los sistemas vivos?
04:39
So we camevino up with this protocellprotocélula modelmodelo here
124
264000
2000
Para eso, creamos este modelo de protocélula que
04:41
that I'm showingdemostración.
125
266000
2000
estoy mostrando aquí.
04:43
We startedempezado with a naturalnatural occurringocurriendo clayarcilla

This is naturalnatural from the environmentambiente, this clayarcilla.

Esta arcilla proviene del medio ambiente

It formsformularios a surfacesuperficie that is, say, chemicallyquímicamente activeactivo.

04:53
CertainCierto kindtipo of moleculesmoléculas like to associateasociar

A cierta clase de moléculas le gusta asociarse

05:17
togetherjuntos in the lablaboratorio, we can come up with, say,
143
302000
3000
en el laboratorio, se obtiene por ejemplo,
05:20
a metabolicmetabólico surfacesuperficie with some
144
305000
2000
una superficie metabólica con algunas
05:22
informationalinformativo moleculesmoléculas attachedadjunto
145
307000
2000
moléculas informativas pegadas
05:24
insidedentro of this membranemembrana bodycuerpo, right?
146
309000
2000
al interior del cuerpo de esta membrana.
05:26
So we're on a roadla carretera towardshacia livingvivo systemssistemas.
147
311000
4000
Y así vamos en camino hacia los sistemas vivos.
05:30
But if you saw this protocellprotocélula, you would not
148
315000
2000
Pero si vieran esta protocélula, no la
05:32
confuseconfundir this with something that was actuallyactualmente aliveviva.
149
317000
2000
confundirían con un ser viviente.
05:34
It's actuallyactualmente quitebastante lifelesssin vida. OnceUna vez it formsformularios,
150
319000
2000
De hecho es inerte. Una vez que se forma,
05:36
it doesn't really do anything.
151
321000
2000
no hace nada más.
05:38
So, something is missingdesaparecido.
152
323000
2000
Así que algo está faltando.
05:40
Some things are missingdesaparecido.
153
325000
2000
Todavía faltan algunas cosas.
05:42
So some things that are missingdesaparecido is,
154
327000
2000
Falta, por ejemplo,
05:44
for exampleejemplo, if you had a flowfluir of energyenergía
155
329000
2000
si pasáramos un flujo de energía
05:46
throughmediante a systemsistema, what we'dmie want
156
331000
2000
a través de un sistema, lo que querríamos
05:48
is a protocellprotocélula that can harvestcosecha
157
333000
2000
es una protocélula que pueda retener
05:50
some of that energyenergía in orderorden to maintainmantener itselfsí mismo,
158
335000
2000
algo de esa energía para autoabastecerse,
05:52
much like livingvivo systemssistemas do.
159
337000
2000
como lo hacen los sistemas vivos.
05:54
So we camevino up with a differentdiferente protocellprotocélula
160
339000
2000
Así que creamos un modelo diferente
05:56
modelmodelo, and this is actuallyactualmente simplermás simple than the previousanterior one.
161
341000
2000
de protocélula, una versión más simple que la anterior.
05:58
In this protocellprotocélula modelmodelo, it's just an oilpetróleo dropletgotita,
162
343000
2000
Este modelo es solo una gota de aceite,
06:00
but a chemicalquímico metabolismmetabolismo insidedentro
163
345000
2000
pero dentro posee un metabolismo químico
06:02
that allowspermite this protocellprotocélula to use energyenergía
164
347000
2000
que le permite a la protocélula usar la energía
06:04
to do something, to actuallyactualmente becomevolverse dynamicdinámica,
165
349000
3000
para hacer cosas, para volverse dinámica,
06:07
as we'llbien see here.
166
352000
2000
tal como lo veremos acá.
06:09
You addañadir the dropletgotita to the systemsistema.
167
354000
2000
Se añade la gota al sistema.
06:11
It's a poolpiscina of wateragua, and the protocellprotocélula
168
356000
2000
Es una piscina y la protocélula
06:13
startsempieza movingemocionante itselfsí mismo around in the systemsistema.
169
358000
2000
se mueve por sí sola en el sistema.
06:15
Okay? OilPetróleo dropletgotita formsformularios
170
360000
2000
¿Bien? Las gotas de aceite que se forman
06:17
throughmediante self-assemblyautoensamblaje, has a chemicalquímico
171
362000
2000
mediante autoensamblaje tienen un metabolismo
06:19
metabolismmetabolismo insidedentro so it can use energyenergía,
172
364000
2000
químico interno que les permite usar energía
06:21
and it usesusos that energyenergía to movemovimiento itselfsí mismo
173
366000
2000
y pueden usar esa energía para moverse
06:23
around in its environmentambiente.
174
368000
2000
por sí mismas en su ambiente.
06:25
As we heardoído earliermás temprano, movementmovimiento is very
175
370000
2000
Como escuchamos antes, el movimiento es muy
06:27
importantimportante in these kindsclases of livingvivo systemssistemas.
176
372000
2000
importante es estas clases de sistemas vivientes.
06:29
It is movingemocionante around, exploringexplorador its environmentambiente,
177
374000
2000
Moverse, explorar su ambiente
06:31
and remodelingremodelación its environmentambiente, as you see,
178
376000
2000
y remodelar su entorno, como pueden ver,
06:33
by these chemicalquímico wavesolas that are formingformando by the protocellprotocélula.
179
378000
2000
gracias a estas ondas químicas que se forman por las protocélulas.
06:35
So it's actinginterino, in a sensesentido, like a livingvivo systemsistema
180
380000
2000
Están actuando, en cierto modo, como un sistema viviente
06:37
tryingmolesto to preservepreservar itselfsí mismo.
181
382000
3000
que trata de sobrevivir.
06:40
We take this samemismo movingemocionante protocellprotocélula here,
182
385000
3000
Tomamos esta misma protocélula que se mueve,
06:43
and we put it in anotherotro experimentexperimentar,
183
388000
2000
pongámosla en otro experimento
06:45
get it movingemocionante. Then I'm going
184
390000
2000
y empecemos a moverla. Y ahora voy
06:47
to addañadir some foodcomida to the systemsistema,
185
392000
2000
a añadir comida al sistema
06:49
and you'lltu vas a see that in blueazul here, right?
186
394000
3000
y Uds. lo verán en azul aquí, ¿correcto?
06:52
So I addañadir some foodcomida sourcefuente to the systemsistema.
187
397000
2000
Así que añado una fuente de comida al sistema.
06:54
The protocellprotocélula movesmovimientos. It encountersencuentros the foodcomida.
188
399000
2000
La protocélula se mueve. Encuentra la comida.
06:56
It reconfiguresreconfigura itselfsí mismo and actuallyactualmente then
189
401000
2000
Se reconfigura a sí misma e incluso
06:58
is ablepoder to climbescalada to the highestmás alto concentrationconcentración
190
403000
2000
es capaz de subir hasta la más alta concentración
07:00
of foodcomida in that systemsistema and stop there.
191
405000
2000
de comida en ese sistema y detenerse ahí.
07:02
AlrightBien? So not only do we have this systemsistema
192
407000
2000
Así que no solo tenemos este sistema
07:04
that has a bodycuerpo, it has a metabolismmetabolismo,
193
409000
2000
que tiene un cuerpo, metabolismo,
07:06
it can use energyenergía, it movesmovimientos around.
194
411000
3000
que puede usar energía y se mueve.
07:09
It can sensesentido its locallocal environmentambiente
195
414000
2000
También puede sentir su entorno local
07:11
and actuallyactualmente find resourcesrecursos
196
416000
2000
y de hecho puede encontrar recursos
07:13
in the environmentambiente to sustainsostener itselfsí mismo.
197
418000
2000
en el medio ambiente para sostenerse a sí mismo.
07:15
Now, this doesn't have a braincerebro, it doesn't have
198
420000
2000
Ahora, no tiene un cerebro, no posee
07:17
a neuralneural systemsistema. This is just a sacksaco of
199
422000
2000
un sistema neural. Es solo un puñado
07:19
chemicalsquímicos that is ablepoder to have this interestinginteresante
200
424000
2000
de químicos capaz de tener un comportamiento
07:21
and complexcomplejo lifelikenatural behaviorcomportamiento.
201
426000
2000
interesante y muy complejo que simula la vida.
07:23
If we countcontar the numbernúmero of chemicalsquímicos
202
428000
2000
Si contamos el número de químicos
07:25
in that systemsistema, actuallyactualmente, includingincluso the wateragua
203
430000
2000
de este sistema, incluyendo el agua
07:27
that's in the dishplato, we have fivecinco chemicalsquímicos
204
432000
2000
que está en la bandeja, tenemos cinco químicos
07:29
that can do this.
205
434000
2000
que pueden hacer esto.
07:31
So then we put these protocellsprotocélulas togetherjuntos in a
206
436000
2000
Luego ponemos todas estas protocélulas en un
07:33
singlesoltero experimentexperimentar to see what they would do,
207
438000
2000
experimento para ver lo que harían
07:35
and dependingdependiente on the conditionscondiciones, we have
208
440000
2000
y, dependiendo de las condiciones, tenemos
07:37
some protocellsprotocélulas on the left that are
209
442000
2000
algunas protocélulas en la izquierda que se están
07:39
movingemocionante around and it likesgustos to touchtoque the other
210
444000
2000
moviendo y que les gusta tocar las otras
07:41
structuresestructuras in its environmentambiente.
211
446000
2000
estructuras en su entorno.
07:43
On the other handmano we have two movingemocionante
212
448000
2000
Por otro lado tenemos dos protocélulas
07:45
protocellsprotocélulas that like to circlecirculo eachcada other,
213
450000
2000
andariegas que les gusta rodearse mutuamente,
07:47
and they formformar a kindtipo of a dancebaile, a complexcomplejo dancebaile with eachcada other.
214
452000
2000
y hacen una especie de baile, una danza compleja entre ambas.
07:49
Right? So not only do individualindividual protocellsprotocélulas
215
454000
2000
¿Está bien? No solo cada protocélula tiene
07:51
have behaviorcomportamiento, what we'venosotros tenemos interpretedinterpretado as
216
456000
2000
un comportamiento, lo que nosotros hemos interpretado
07:53
behaviorcomportamiento in this systemsistema, but we alsoademás have
217
458000
2000
como comportamiento en este sistema, sino que
07:55
basicallybásicamente population-levelnivel de población behaviorcomportamiento
218
460000
3000
también tenemos comportamientos a nivel de población
07:58
similarsimilar to what organismsorganismos have.
219
463000
3000
similar a lo que tienen los organismos.
08:01
So now that you're all expertsexpertos on protocellsprotocélulas,
220
466000
3000
Como ya son unos expertos en protocélulas,
08:04
we're going to playjugar a gamejuego with these protocellsprotocélulas.
221
469000
2000
haremos un juego con estas protocélulas.
08:06
We're going to make two differentdiferente kindsclases.
222
471000
2000
Vamos a hacer protocélulas de dos tipos.
08:08
ProtocellProtocell A has a certaincierto kindtipo of chemistryquímica
223
473000
3000
La protocélula A tiene cierta clase de química
08:11
insidedentro that, when activatedactivado, the protocellprotocélula
224
476000
2000
interna que, cuando se activa, la protocélula
08:13
startsempieza to vibratevibrar around, just dancingbailando.
225
478000
2000
comienza a vibrar, a bailar.
08:15
So rememberrecuerda, these are primitiveprimitivo things,
226
480000
2000
Recuerden, estas células son primitivas,
08:17
so dancingbailando protocellsprotocélulas, that's very
227
482000
2000
así que el hecho de que bailen
08:19
interestinginteresante to us. (LaughterRisa)
228
484000
2000
nos resulta interesante. (Risas)
08:21
The secondsegundo protocellprotocélula has a differentdiferente
229
486000
2000
La segunda protocélula tiene una composición
08:23
chemistryquímica insidedentro, and when activatedactivado,
230
488000
2000
química diferente, que cuando se activa,
08:25
the protocellsprotocélulas all come togetherjuntos and they fusefusible
231
490000
2000
todas las protocélulas se juntan y se fusionan
08:27
into one biggrande one. Right?
232
492000
2000
en una gran célula. ¿De acuerdo?
08:29
And we just put these two togetherjuntos
233
494000
2000
Entonces las ponemos a ambas
08:31
in the samemismo systemsistema.
234
496000
2000
en el mismo sistema.
08:33
So there's populationpoblación A,
235
498000
2000
Tenemos a la población A,
08:35
there's populationpoblación B, and then
236
500000
2000
está la población B,
08:37
we activateactivar the systemsistema,
237
502000
2000
luego activamos el sistema
08:39
and protocellprotocélula BsBs, they're the blueazul onesunos,
238
504000
2000
y las protocélulas B, son las azules,
08:41
they all come togetherjuntos. They fusefusible togetherjuntos
239
506000
2000
se juntan. Se fusionan para
08:43
to formformar one biggrande blobgota, and the other protocellprotocélula
240
508000
2000
formar una gran masa y las otras protocélulas
08:45
just dancesbailes around. And this just happenssucede
241
510000
2000
siguen bailando. Y esto continúa
08:47
untilhasta all of the energyenergía in the systemsistema is
242
512000
2000
hasta que toda la energía del sistema
08:49
basicallybásicamente used up, and then, gamejuego over.
243
514000
3000
se consuma y, entonces, se acabe el juego.
08:52
So then I repeatedrepetido this experimentexperimentar
244
517000
2000
Repetí este experimento
08:54
a bunchmanojo of timesveces, and one time
245
519000
2000
muchas veces y una vez
08:56
something very interestinginteresante happenedsucedió.
246
521000
2000
ocurrió algo muy interesante.
08:58
So, I addedadicional these protocellsprotocélulas togetherjuntos
247
523000
2000
Añadí estas protocélulas
09:00
to the systemsistema, and protocellprotocélula A and protocellprotocélula B
248
525000
2000
al sistema y las protocélulas A y B
09:02
fusedfusionado togetherjuntos to formformar a hybridhíbrido protocellprotocélula ABAB.
249
527000
2000
se fusionaron y formaron la protocélula híbrida AB.
09:04
That didn't happenocurrir before. There it goesva.
250
529000
2000
Eso nunca había pasado. Ahí lo tienen.
09:06
There's a protocellprotocélula ABAB now in this systemsistema.
251
531000
3000
Ahora tenemos una protocélula AB en el sistema.
09:09
ProtocellProtocell ABAB likesgustos to dancebaile around for a bitpoco,
252
534000
3000
A la protocélula AB le gusta bailar,
09:12
while protocellprotocélula B does the fusingfusionando, okay?
253
537000
3000
mientras que la protocélula B se fusiona, ¿OK?
09:15
But then something even more interestinginteresante happenssucede.
254
540000
3000
Y entonces sucede algo aún más interesante.
09:18
Watch when these two largegrande protocellsprotocélulas,
255
543000
2000
Miren cuando estas dos grandes protocélulas
09:20
the hybridhíbrido onesunos, fusefusible togetherjuntos.
256
545000
2000
-las híbridas- se fusionan.
09:22
Now we have a dancingbailando protocellprotocélula
257
547000
3000
Ahora tenemos una protocélula bailarina
09:25
and a self-replicationautorreplicación eventevento. Right. (LaughterRisa)
258
550000
4000
y un evento que se imita a sí mismo. Así es. (Risas)
09:29
Just with blobsmanchas of chemicalsquímicos, again.
259
554000
2000
Volvamos a las masas de químicos.
09:31
So the way this workstrabajos is, you have
260
556000
2000
Funcionan de esta manera: tenemos
09:33
a simplesencillo systemsistema of fivecinco chemicalsquímicos here,
261
558000
2000
un sistema simple de cinco químicos,
09:35
a simplesencillo systemsistema here. When they hybridizehibridizar,
262
560000
2000
un sistema simple. Cuando forman híbridos,
09:37
you then formformar something that's differentdiferente than
263
562000
2000
se está formando algo diferente a lo que había
09:39
before, it's more complexcomplejo than before,
264
564000
2000
antes y ahora es más complejo,
09:41
and you get the emergenceaparición of anotherotro kindtipo of
265
566000
2000
porque ahora surge otro comportamiento que simula
09:43
lifelikenatural behaviorcomportamiento whichcual
266
568000
2000
la vida y que en este
09:45
in this casecaso is replicationreplicación.
267
570000
2000
caso es la replicación.
09:47
So sinceya que we can make some interestinginteresante
268
572000
2000
Como ya podemos hacer protocélulas
09:49
protocellsprotocélulas that we like, interestinginteresante colorscolores and

270
576000

09:53
to make, and they have interestinginteresante lifelikenatural

09:55
propertiespropiedades, perhapsquizás these protocellsprotocélulas have

Es una muestra muy difícil de caracterizar

completamente, incluso con métodos modernos,

10:36
So this is similarsimilar to what happenssucede when you
291
621000
2000
Esto es similar a lo que pasa cuando uno toma
10:38
take purepuro sugarazúcar crystalscristales in your kitchencocina,

10:48
If you let that go unregulatedno regulado, you'lltu vas a

Si uno no los regula, los lazos químicos

se seguirán formando y rompiendo,

10:58

302
643000
2000
difícil de lavar. Bueno, este es quizá
11:00
the originorigen of life would have lookedmirado like.
303
645000
2000
el aspecto del origen de la vida.
11:02
You needednecesario to get life out of this junkbasura that
304

Había que generar vida con toda esa basura

fourlas cuatro, 4.5 billionmil millones yearsaños agohace.
306
651000
2000
hace unos 4500 millones de años.
11:08
So the challengereto then is,
307
653000
2000
El reto entonces es
11:10
throwlanzar away all your purepuro chemicalsquímicos in the lablaboratorio,
308
655000
2000
desechar todos los químicos puros en el laboratorio
11:12
and try to make some protocellsprotocélulas with lifelikenatural

These are alsoademás, these tar-fueledalquitranado protocellsprotocélulas,

They becomevolverse very energeticenergético, and ablepoder

¿cómo podríamos siquiera reconocer vida?

Well, they camevino up with threeTres very generalgeneral

Bueno, ellos propusieron tres criterios

criteriacriterios. First is -- and they're listedlistado here.
363
773000
2000
generales. El primero... están listados aquí.
13:10
The first is, the systemsistema has to be in
364
775000
2000
El primero es que el sistema no tiene que estar
13:12
non-equilibriumno equilibrio. That meansmedio the systemsistema
365
777000
2000
en equilibrio. Es decir que el sistema
13:14
cannotno poder be deadmuerto, in a matterimportar of facthecho.
366
779000
1000
no puede estar muerto.
13:15
BasicallyBásicamente what that meansmedio is, you have
367
780000

Básicamente uno tiene
13:17
an inputentrada of energyenergía into the systemsistema that life

SecondlyEn segundo lugar, life needsnecesariamente to be in liquidlíquido formformar,

Segundo, la vida necesita estar en forma líquida,
13:34
so that meansmedio even if we had some
