ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Martin Hanczyc - Chemist
Martin Hanczyc explores the path between living and nonliving systems, using chemical droplets to study behavior of the earliest cells.

Why you should listen

Martin Hanczyc is developing novel synthetic chemical systems based on the properties of living systems, in a quest to understand how life forms. These synthetic systems, or "protocells," are model systems of primitive living cells and chemical examples of artificial life. As Rachel Armstrong puts it: "Although the protocell model system is just a chemically modified oil droplet, its dynamics are astonishingly varied and complex."

He's based at the Institute of Physics and Chemistry and the Center for Fundamental Living Technology (FLinT) in Denmark. He is also an Honorary Senior Lecturer at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London.

296000
2000
de moléculas líquidas à volta de si mesma,
05:13
shownmostrando in greenverde here on this micrographMicrografia.
141
298000
2000
e vemos isso a verde aqui neste micrográfico.
05:15
So just throughatravés self-assemblyauto-montagem, mixingmisturando things
142
300000
2000
Então, apenas com a auto-montagem, misturando
05:17
togetherjuntos in the lablaboratório, we can come up with, say,
143
302000
3000
coisas no laboratório, podemos criar, por exemplo,
05:20
a metabolicmetabólica surfacesuperfície with some
144
305000
2000
uma superfície metabólica com algumas
05:22
informationalinformativo moleculesmoléculas attachedem anexo
145
307000
2000
moléculas informacionais ligadas
05:24
insidedentro of this membranemembrana bodycorpo, right?
146
309000
2000
dentro deste corpo de membrana, certo?
05:26
So we're on a roadestrada towardsem direção livingvivo systemssistemas.
147
311000
4000
Então, estamos numa estrada a caminho dos sistemas vivos.
05:30
But if you saw this protocellprotocell, you would not
148
315000
2000
Mas se vissem esta protocécula, não confundiriam
05:32
confuseconfundir this with something that was actuallyna realidade alivevivo.
149
317000
2000
isto com algo que estivesse realmente vivo.
05:34
It's actuallyna realidade quitebastante lifelesssem vida. OnceVez it formsformas,
150
319000
2000
É na verdade algo bastante sem vida. Assim que se forma,
05:36
it doesn't really do anything.
151
321000
2000
de facto não faz nada.
05:38
So, something is missingausência de.
152
323000
2000
Então, falta alguma coisa.
05:40
Some things are missingausência de.
153
325000
2000
Faltam algumas coisas.
05:42
So some things that are missingausência de is,
154
327000
2000
Algumas das coisas que faltam são,
05:44
for exampleexemplo, if you had a flowfluxo of energyenergia
155
329000
2000
por exemplo, se tivermos um fluxo de energia
05:46
throughatravés a systemsistema, what we'dqua want
156
331000
2000
através de um sistema, o que quereríamos
05:48
is a protocellprotocell that can harvestcolheita
157
333000
2000
seria uma protocélula que conseguisse colher
05:50
some of that energyenergia in orderordem to maintainmanter itselfem si,
158
335000
2000
alguma dessa energia de modo a sustentar-se,
05:52
much like livingvivo systemssistemas do.
159
337000
2000
tal como fazem os sistemas vivos.
05:54
So we cameveio up with a differentdiferente protocellprotocell
160
339000
2000
Então concebemos um modelo de protocélula
05:56
modelmodelo, and this is actuallyna realidade simplermais simples than the previousanterior one.
161
341000
2000
diferente, e este é na verdade mais simples que o anterior.
05:58
In this protocellprotocell modelmodelo, it's just an oilóleo dropletgotícula,
162
343000
2000
Neste modelo de protocélula, uma simples gota de óleo,
06:00
but a chemicalquímico metabolismmetabolismo insidedentro
163
345000
2000
mas com um metabolismo químico dentro
06:02
that allowspermite this protocellprotocell to use energyenergia
164
347000
2000
que permite que esta protocécula use energia
06:04
to do something, to actuallyna realidade becometornar-se dynamicdinâmico,
165
349000
3000
para fazer algo, para de facto se tornar dinâmica,
06:07
as we'llbem see here.
166
352000
2000
como iremos ver aqui.
06:09
You addadicionar the dropletgotícula to the systemsistema.
167
354000
2000
Adicionamos a gota ao sistema.
06:11
It's a poolpiscina of wateragua, and the protocellprotocell
168
356000
2000
É uma vasilha de água, e a protocélula
06:13
startscomeça movingmovendo-se itselfem si around in the systemsistema.
169
358000
2000
move-se pelo sistema.
06:15
Okay? OilÓleo dropletgotícula formsformas
170
360000
2000
Certo? A gota de óleo forma-se
06:17
throughatravés self-assemblyauto-montagem, has a chemicalquímico
171
362000
2000
através da auto-montagem, tem um
06:19
metabolismmetabolismo insidedentro so it can use energyenergia,
172
364000
2000
metabolismo químico dentro para que possa usar energia,
06:21
and it usesusa that energyenergia to movemover itselfem si
173
366000
2000
e usa essa energia para se mover
06:23
around in its environmentmeio Ambiente.
174
368000
2000
pelo seu meio ambiente.
06:25
As we heardouviu earliermais cedo, movementmovimento is very
175
370000
2000
Como escutámos antes, o movimento
06:27
importantimportante in these kindstipos of livingvivo systemssistemas.
176
372000
2000
é muito importante neste tipo de sistemas vivos.
06:29
It is movingmovendo-se around, exploringexplorando its environmentmeio Ambiente,
177
374000
2000
Está a mover-se, a explorar o meio ambiente,
06:31
and remodelingremodelação its environmentmeio Ambiente, as you see,
178
376000
2000
e a remodelar o seu meio ambiente, como vêem,
06:33
by these chemicalquímico wavesondas that are formingformando by the protocellprotocell.
179
378000
2000
através destas ondas químicas que se formam à volta da protocélula.
06:35
So it's actingagindo, in a sensesentido, like a livingvivo systemsistema
180
380000
2000
Então está a agir, em certo sentido, como um sistema vivo
06:37
tryingtentando to preservepreservar itselfem si.
181
382000
3000
tentando auto perservar-se.
06:40
We take this samemesmo movingmovendo-se protocellprotocell here,
182
385000
3000
Pegamos nesta mesma protocélula móvel aqui,
06:43
and we put it in anotheroutro experimentexperimentar,
183
388000
2000
e colocamo-la noutra experiência,
06:45
get it movingmovendo-se. Then I'm going
184
390000
2000
pômo-la a mexer-se. A seguir vou
06:47
to addadicionar some foodComida to the systemsistema,
185
392000
2000
adicionar alguma comida ao sistema,
06:49
and you'llvocê vai see that in blueazul here, right?
186
394000
3000
e vão vê-lo em azul aqui, certo?
06:52
So I addadicionar some foodComida sourcefonte to the systemsistema.
187
397000
2000
Então adiciono alguma comida ao sistema.
06:54
The protocellprotocell movesse move. It encountersencontros the foodComida.
188
399000
2000
A protocélula move-se. Encontra a comida.
06:56
It reconfiguresreconfigura itselfem si and actuallyna realidade then
189
401000
2000
Reconfigura-se e a seguir é capaz
06:58
is ablecapaz to climbescalar to the highestmais alto concentrationconcentração
190
403000
2000
de ir até à mais alta concentração
07:00
of foodComida in that systemsistema and stop there.
191
405000
2000
de comida naquele sistema e parar por ali.
07:02
AlrightTudo bem? So not only do we have this systemsistema
192
407000
2000
Certo? Então não só temos este sistema
07:04
that has a bodycorpo, it has a metabolismmetabolismo,
193
409000
2000
que tem um corpo, tem um metabolismo,
07:06
it can use energyenergia, it movesse move around.
194
411000
3000
consegue usar energia, consegue mover-se.
07:09
It can sensesentido its locallocal environmentmeio Ambiente
195
414000
2000
Consegue sentir o seu meio ambiente local
07:11
and actuallyna realidade find resourcesRecursos
196
416000
2000
e realmente encontrar recursos
07:13
in the environmentmeio Ambiente to sustainsustentar itselfem si.
197
418000
2000
no meio ambiente para se sustentar.
07:15
Now, this doesn't have a braincérebro, it doesn't have
198
420000
2000
Ora bem, isto não tem um cérebro, não tem
07:17
a neuralneural systemsistema. This is just a sacksaco of
199
422000
2000
um sistema neural. Isto é apenas um saco
07:19
chemicalsprodutos quimicos that is ablecapaz to have this interestinginteressante
200
424000
2000
de químicos que é capaz de ter este comportamento
07:21
and complexcomplexo lifelikelifelike behaviorcomportamento.
201
426000
2000
interessante e complexo semelhante à vida.
07:23
If we countcontagem the numbernúmero of chemicalsprodutos quimicos
202
428000
2000
Se contarmos o número de químicos
07:25
in that systemsistema, actuallyna realidade, includingIncluindo the wateragua
203
430000
2000
naquele sistema, na verdade, incluindo a água,
07:27
that's in the dishprato, we have fivecinco chemicalsprodutos quimicos
204
432000
2000
que está no prato, encontramos cinco químicos
07:29
that can do this.
205
434000
2000
que conseguem fazer isto.
07:31
So then we put these protocellsprotocélulas togetherjuntos in a
206
436000
2000
Então a seguir juntamos estas protocélulas numa
07:33
singlesolteiro experimentexperimentar to see what they would do,
207
438000
2000
única experiência para ver o que fazem,
07:35
and dependingdependendo on the conditionscondições, we have
208
440000
2000
e dependendo das condições, temos
07:37
some protocellsprotocélulas on the left that are
209
442000
2000
algumas protocélulas à esquerda
07:39
movingmovendo-se around and it likesgosta to touchtocar the other
210
444000
2000
que se mexem e gostam de tocar
07:41
structuresestruturas in its environmentmeio Ambiente.
211
446000
2000
as outras estruturas no seu meio ambiente.
07:43
On the other handmão we have two movingmovendo-se
212
448000
2000
Por outro lado temos duas protocélulas
07:45
protocellsprotocélulas that like to circlecírculo eachcada other,
213
450000
2000
que gostam de se mover em círculos à volta uma da outra,
07:47
and they formFormato a kindtipo of a dancedança, a complexcomplexo dancedança with eachcada other.
214
452000
2000
e fazem uma espécie de dança, uma dança complexa uma com a outra.
07:49
Right? So not only do individualIndividual protocellsprotocélulas
215
454000
2000
Certo? Então não só as protocéculas individuais
07:51
have behaviorcomportamento, what we'venós temos interpretedinterpretado as
216
456000
2000
têm comportamento, aquilo que interpretámos
07:53
behaviorcomportamento in this systemsistema, but we alsoAlém disso have
217
458000
2000
como comportamento neste sistemas, mas também temos
07:55
basicallybasicamente population-levelpopulação-nível behaviorcomportamento
218
460000
3000
comportamento básico tipo-população.
07:58
similarsemelhante to what organismsorganismos have.
219
463000
3000
semelhante ao que apresentam os organismos.
08:01
So now that you're all expertsespecialistas on protocellsprotocélulas,
220
466000
3000
Então, agora que são todos peritos em protocélulas,
08:04
we're going to playToque a gamejogos with these protocellsprotocélulas.
221
469000
2000
vamos jogar um jogo com estas protocélulas.
08:06
We're going to make two differentdiferente kindstipos.
222
471000
2000
Vamos fazer dois tipos diferentes.
08:08
ProtocellProtocell A has a certaincerto kindtipo of chemistryquímica
223
473000
3000
A protocélula A tem um certo tipo de química
08:11
insidedentro that, when activatedativado, the protocellprotocell
224
476000
2000
dentro que, quando activada, faz com que
08:13
startscomeça to vibratevibrar around, just dancingdançando.
225
478000
2000
a protocélula vibre, simplesmente dançando.
08:15
So rememberlembrar, these are primitiveprimitivo things,
226
480000
2000
Então lembrem-se, isto são coisas primitivas,
08:17
so dancingdançando protocellsprotocélulas, that's very
227
482000
2000
são protocéculas dançarinas, é algo que
08:19
interestinginteressante to us. (LaughterRiso)
228
484000
2000
achamos muito interessante. (Risos)
08:21
The secondsegundo protocellprotocell has a differentdiferente
229
486000
2000
A segunda protocélula tem um tipo diferente
08:23
chemistryquímica insidedentro, and when activatedativado,
230
488000
2000
de química dentro, e quando activada
08:25
the protocellsprotocélulas all come togetherjuntos and they fusefusível
231
490000
2000
todas as protocélulas se juntam e fundem
08:27
into one biggrande one. Right?
232
492000
2000
numa única grande protocélula. Certo?
08:29
And we just put these two togetherjuntos
233
494000
2000
E simplesmente juntamos as duas
08:31
in the samemesmo systemsistema.
234
496000
2000
no mesmo sistema.
08:33
So there's populationpopulação A,
235
498000
2000
Então aqui está a população A,
08:35
there's populationpopulação B, and then
236
500000
2000
aqui está a população B, e depois
08:37
we activateativar the systemsistema,
237
502000
2000
activamos o sistema,
08:39
and protocellprotocell BsBS, they're the blueazul onesuns,
238
504000
2000
e as protocélulas B, são as azuis,
08:41
they all come togetherjuntos. They fusefusível togetherjuntos
239
506000
2000
juntam-se todas. Fundem-se
08:43
to formFormato one biggrande blobblob, and the other protocellprotocell
240
508000
2000
para formar uma grande bolha, e as outras protocélulas
08:45
just dancesdanças around. And this just happensacontece
241
510000
2000
apenas dançam. E isto apenas acontece
08:47
untilaté all of the energyenergia in the systemsistema is
242
512000
2000
até que toda a energia do sistema
08:49
basicallybasicamente used up, and then, gamejogos over.
243
514000
3000
é gasta, e então, game over, acabou.
08:52
So then I repeatedrepetido this experimentexperimentar
244
517000
2000
Então eu repeti esta experiência
08:54
a bunchgrupo of timesvezes, and one time
245
519000
2000
um monte de vezes, e uma vez
08:56
something very interestinginteressante happenedaconteceu.
246
521000
2000
algo muito interessante aconteceu.
08:58
So, I addedadicionado these protocellsprotocélulas togetherjuntos
247
523000
2000
Então, adicionei estas protocélulas
09:00
to the systemsistema, and protocellprotocell A and protocellprotocell B
248
525000
2000
ao sistema, e as protocélulas A e B
09:02
fusedfundido togetherjuntos to formFormato a hybridhíbrido protocellprotocell ABAB.
249
527000
2000
fundiram-se para formar uma protocélula híbrida AB.
09:04
That didn't happenacontecer before. There it goesvai.
250
529000
2000
Isso não tinha acontecido antes. Aqui está.
09:06
There's a protocellprotocell ABAB now in this systemsistema.
251
531000
3000
Agora há uma protocélula AB neste sistema.
09:09
ProtocellProtocell ABAB likesgosta to dancedança around for a bitpouco,
252
534000
3000
A protocélula AB gosta de dançar um bocado,
09:12
while protocellprotocell B does the fusingde fusão, okay?
253
537000
3000
enquanto a protocélula B gosta de se fundir, certo?
09:15
But then something even more interestinginteressante happensacontece.
254
540000
3000
Mas então algo ainda mais interessante acontece.
09:18
Watch when these two largeampla protocellsprotocélulas,
255
543000
2000
Observem quando estas duas grandes protocélulas,
09:20
the hybridhíbrido onesuns, fusefusível togetherjuntos.
256
545000
2000
as híbridas, se fundem.
09:22
Now we have a dancingdançando protocellprotocell
257
547000
3000
Agora temos uma protocélula dançarina
09:25
and a self-replicationauto-replicação eventevento. Right. (LaughterRiso)
258
550000
4000
e um evento auto-replicador. Certo. (Risos)
09:29
Just with blobsbolhas of chemicalsprodutos quimicos, again.
259
554000
2000
Só com bolhas de químicos, de novo.
09:31
So the way this workstrabalho is, you have
260
556000
2000
A forma como isto funciona é, temos
09:33
a simplesimples systemsistema of fivecinco chemicalsprodutos quimicos here,
261
558000
2000
um sistema simples de cinco químicos aqui,
09:35
a simplesimples systemsistema here. When they hybridizehibridizam,
262
560000
2000
um sistema simples aqui. Quando se tornam híbridos,
09:37
you then formFormato something that's differentdiferente than
263
562000
2000
então forma-se algo que é diferente do que
09:39
before, it's more complexcomplexo than before,
264
564000
2000
havia antes, que é mais complexo do que antes,
09:41
and you get the emergenceemergência of anotheroutro kindtipo of
265
566000
2000
e temos a emergência de um outro tipo de
09:43
lifelikelifelike behaviorcomportamento whichqual
266
568000
2000
comportamento semelhante à vida,
09:45
in this casecaso is replicationreplicação.
267
570000
2000
que neste caso é a replicação.
09:47
So sinceDesde a we can make some interestinginteressante
268
572000
2000
Então, uma vez que que conseguimos criar algumas protocélulas interessantes
09:49
protocellsprotocélulas that we like, interestinginteressante colorscores and
269
574000
2000
de que gostamos, cores interessantes e
09:51
interestinginteressante behaviorscomportamentos, and they're very easyfácil
270
576000
2000
comportamentos interessantes, e são muito fáceis
09:53
to make, and they have interestinginteressante lifelikelifelike
271
578000
2000
de produzir, e apresentam interessantes propriedades
09:55
propertiespropriedades, perhapspossivelmente these protocellsprotocélulas have
272
580000
3000

09:58
something to tell us about the originorigem of life

302
643000

11:00
the originorigem of life would have lookedolhou like.
303
645000

que a origem da vida deve ter tido.
11:02
You needednecessário to get life out of this junklixo that

11:08
So the challengedesafio then is,

653000

Então o desafio é,
11:10
throwlançar away all your purepuro chemicalsprodutos quimicos in the lablaboratório,

gerais. Primeiro - e a lista está aqui.
13:10
The first is, the systemsistema has to be in

O primeiro, o sistema tem de estar
13:12
non-equilibriumnão-equilíbrio. That meanssignifica the systemsistema

13:15
BasicallyBasicamente what that meanssignifica is, you have

Basicamente, isso significa que, temos
