ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Fabian Hemmert - Designer
Fabian Hemmert studies the theory and philosophy of embodiment, resistance and thinghood.

Why you should listen

Fabian Hemmert thinks hard about communicating information in non-visual ways -- through weight, shape, touch, movement. His recent explorations into shape-shifting cell phones are part of a long career of thinking beyond the touchscreen. Along with his shape-shifting mobile phones, his newest work explores haptic feedback in pens. He's a design researcher at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories and is working on his PhD in Berlin.

His master's thesis is an elegant exploration of the non-visual -- exploring the surprising effects of closing one's eyes during a movie or a first-person shooter game.

I am a PhPH.D. studentstudent

3000
Ik ben een Ph.D. student (AIO),
00:19
and that meansmiddelen I have a questionvraag:
1
4000
2000
00:21
how can we make digitaldigitaal contentinhoud graspablepraktische?
2
6000
3000
hoe kunnen we digitale inhoud begrijpelijk maken?
00:24
Because you see,
3
9000
2000
Want weet u,
00:26
on the one handhand-, there is the digitaldigitaal worldwereld-
4
11000
2000
00:28
and no questionvraag, manyveel things are happeninggebeurtenis there right now.
5
13000
3000
en zeker, daar is momenteel veel ontwikkeling gaande.
00:32
And for us humansmensen, it's not quiteheel materialmateriaal, it's not really there --
6
17000
2000
00:34
it's virtualvirtueel.
7
19000
2000
Het is virtueel.
00:36
On the other handhand-, we humansmensen,
8
21000
2000
Aan de andere kant leven wij mensen
00:38
we liveleven in a physicalfysiek worldwereld-.
9
23000
2000
in een fysieke wereld.
00:40
It's richrijk, it tastessmaken good, it feelsvoelt good, it smellsgeuren good.
10
25000
3000
Die is rijk, die smaakt goed, die voelt goed, die ruikt goed.
00:43
So the questionvraag is: how do we get the stuffspul over
11
28000
2000
00:45
from the digitaldigitaal into the physicalfysiek?
12
30000
2000
de digitale naar de fysieke wereld overbrengen?
00:47
That's my questionvraag.
13
32000
2000
Dat is mijn vraag.
00:49
If you look at the iPhoneiPhone with its touchaanraken
14
34000
2000
00:51
and the WiiWii with its bodilylichamelijk activityactiviteit,
15
36000
2000
en de Wii met zijn lichaamsactiviteit,
00:53
you can see the tendencyneiging; it's gettingkrijgen physicalfysiek.
16
38000
3000
zie je de trend: alles wordt tastbaar.
00:56
The questionvraag is: what's nextvolgende?
17
41000
3000
00:59
Now, I have threedrie optionsopties that I would like to showtonen you.
18
44000
3000
01:02
The first one is massmassa-.
19
47000
2000
De eerste is massa.
01:04
As humansmensen, we are sensitivegevoelig
20
49000
2000
Als mensen zijn we gevoelig
01:06
to where an objectvoorwerp in our handhand- is heavyzwaar.
21
51000
2000
01:08
So, could we use that in mobilemobiel phonestelefoons?
22
53000
3000
01:11
Let me showtonen you the weight-shiftinggewicht-shifting mobilemobiel.
23
56000
2000
Laat me u tonen: de gewichtsveranderende mobiel.
01:13
It is a mobilemobiel phone-shapedtelefoon vormige- boxdoos
24
58000
2000
01:15
that has an ironijzer weightgewicht insidebinnen, whichwelke we can moveverhuizing around,
25
60000
3000
01:18
and you can feel where it's heavyzwaar.
26
63000
2000
01:20
We shiftverschuiving the gravitationalzwaartekracht centercentrum of it.
27
65000
3000
We bewegen het zwaartepunt ervan.
01:23
For examplevoorbeeld, we can augmentAugment digitaldigitaal contentinhoud
28
68000
3000
Bijvoorbeeld, we kunnen digitale informatie ondersteunen
01:26
with physicalfysiek massmassa-.
29
71000
2000
met fysieke massa.
01:28
So you moveverhuizing around the contentinhoud on a displaytonen,
30
73000
2000
01:30
but you can alsoook feel where it is just from the weightgewicht of the deviceapparaat.
31
75000
3000
01:34
AnotherEen ander thing it's good for is navigationnavigatie --
32
79000
3000
Het is ook handig voor navigatie.
01:37
it can guidegids you around in a citystad.
33
82000
2000
Het kan je rondleiden in een stad.
01:39
It can tell you by its weightgewicht,
34
84000
2000
Het kan je door zijn gewicht vertellen,
01:41
"Okay, moveverhuizing right. WalkWandeling aheadverder. Make a left here."
35
86000
3000
"Ok, naar rechts. Rechtdoor lopen. Hier linksaf slaan."
01:44
And the good thing about that is you don't have to look at the deviceapparaat all the time;
36
89000
3000
01:47
you have your eyesogen freegratis to see the citystad.
37
92000
2000
01:49
Now, massmassa- is the first thing;
38
94000
3000
Ok, massa in het eerste ding.
01:52
the secondtweede thing, that's shapevorm.
39
97000
2000
Het tweede ding, dat is vorm.
01:54
We're alsoook sensitivegevoelig to the shapevorm of objectsvoorwerpen we have in [our] handshanden.
40
99000
3000
01:57
So if I downloaddownloaden an e-booke-boek and it has 20 pagespagina's --
41
102000
3000
02:00
well, they could be thindun, right --
42
105000
2000
nou, dat kan dun zijn, toch --
02:02
but if it has 500 pagespagina's, I want to feel that "HarryHarry PotterPotter" --
43
107000
3000
02:05
it's thickdik. (LaughterGelach)
44
110000
2000
Het is dik.
02:07
So let me showtonen you the shape-changingvorm wijzigen mobilemobiel.
45
112000
3000
Dus laat me u tonen: de vormveranderende mobiel.
02:10
Again, it's a mobilemobiel phone-shapedtelefoon vormige- boxdoos,
46
115000
2000
02:12
and this one can changeverandering its shapevorm.
47
117000
2000
En deze kan zijn vorm veranderen.
02:16
We can playspelen with the shapevorm itselfzelf.
48
121000
2000
We kunnen met de vorm zelf spelen.
02:18
For examplevoorbeeld, it can be thindun in your pocketzak-,
49
123000
2000
02:20
whichwelke we of courseCursus want it to be;
50
125000
2000
wat we natuurlijk ook willen,
02:22
but then if you holdhouden it in your handhand-, it can leanmager towardsnaar you, be thickdik.
51
127000
3000
02:25
It's like taperedtaps toelopende to the downsidekeerzijde.
52
130000
2000
Het loopt taps toe naar beneden.
02:27
If you changeverandering the graspgrijpen, it can adjustaanpassen to that.
53
132000
3000
02:31
It's alsoook usefulnuttig if you want to put it down on your nightstandNachtkastje to watch a moviefilm
54
136000
3000
02:34
or use as an alarmalarm clockklok, it standsstands.
55
139000
3000
02:37
It's fairlytamelijk simpleeenvoudig.
56
142000
2000
Het is vrij simpel.
02:39
AnotherEen ander thing is,
57
144000
2000
Nog iets anders,
02:41
sometimessoms we watch things on a mobilemobiel phonetelefoon,
58
146000
2000
soms willen we dingen bekijken op onze mobiele telefoon
02:43
they are biggergroter than the phonetelefoon itselfzelf.
59
148000
2000
die groter zijn dan de telefoon zelf.
02:45
So in that casegeval -- like here, there's an appapp that's biggergroter than the phone'stelefoon screenscherm --
60
150000
3000
02:48
the shapevorm of the phonetelefoon could tell you,
61
153000
2000
02:50
"Okay, off the screenscherm right here, there is more contentinhoud.
62
155000
2000
"Ok, buiten het scherm hier is nog meer informatie.
02:52
You can't see it, but it's there."
63
157000
2000
02:54
And you can feel that because it's thickerdikker at that edgerand.
64
159000
3000
02:57
The shapevorm is the secondtweede thing.
65
162000
3000
De vorm is het tweede aspect.
03:00
The thirdderde thing operatesexploiteert on a differentverschillend levelniveau.
66
165000
3000
03:03
As humansmensen, we are socialsociaal, we are empathicempathische,
67
168000
3000
Mensen zijn sociaal, we zijn empathisch
03:06
and that's great.
68
171000
2000
en dat is geweldig.
03:08
Wouldn'tZou niet that be a way to make mobilemobiel phonestelefoons more intuitiveintuïtief?
69
173000
3000
03:11
Think of a hamsterhamster in the pocketzak-.
70
176000
2000
Denk aan een hamster in je zak.
03:13
Well, I can feel it, it's doing all right -- I don't have to checkcontroleren it.
71
178000
3000
Ik kan hem voelen. Het gaat goed met hem. Ik hoef het niet te controleren.
03:16
Let me showtonen you the livingleven mobilemobiel phonetelefoon.
72
181000
3000
Laat me u tonen: de levende mobiele telefoon.
03:19
So, onceeen keer again, mobilemobiel phone-shapedtelefoon vormige- boxdoos,
73
184000
3000
03:22
but this one, it has a breathadem and a heartbeatheartbeat,
74
187000
3000
Maar deze ademt en heeft een hartslag,
03:25
and it feelsvoelt very organicbiologisch.
75
190000
2000
en voelt heel organisch aan.
03:27
(LaughterGelach)
76
192000
2000
(Gelach)
03:29
And you can tell, it's relaxedontspannen right now.
77
194000
2000
03:31
Oh now, missedgemiste call, a newnieuwe call,
78
196000
2000
Oh nu, een gemiste oproep, een nieuwe oproep,
03:33
newnieuwe girlfriendvriendin maybe --
79
198000
2000
nieuwe vriendin misschien.
03:35
very excitingopwindend. (LaughterGelach)
80
200000
3000
Erg opwindend.
03:38
How do we calmkalmte it down?
81
203000
2000
Hoe kunnen we hem kalmeren?
03:40
You give it a pattikje behindachter the earsoren,
82
205000
2000
Je aait hem achter zijn oren,
03:42
and everything is all right again.
83
207000
3000
en alles is weer goed.
03:45
So, that's very intuitiveintuïtief, and that's what we want.
84
210000
2000
03:47
So, what we have seengezien are threedrie waysmanieren
85
212000
2000
03:49
to make the digitaldigitaal graspablepraktische for us.
86
214000
2000
03:51
And I think makingmaking it physicalfysiek
87
216000
2000
En ik denk dat het fysiek maken
03:53
is a good way to do that.
88
218000
2000
daar een goede manier voor is.
03:55
What's behindachter that is a postulationverzoek,
89
220000
2000
Wat hierachter zit is een stelling,
03:57
namelynamelijk that not
90
222000
2000
namelijk dat
03:59
humansmensen should get much more technicaltechnisch in the futuretoekomst;
91
224000
3000
04:02
ratherliever than that,
92
227000
2000
Maar meer nog dan dat,
04:04
technologytechnologie, a bitbeetje more humanmenselijk.
93
229000
2000
technologie, wat menselijker.
