ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Fabian Hemmert - Designer
Fabian Hemmert studies the theory and philosophy of embodiment, resistance and thinghood.

Why you should listen

Fabian Hemmert thinks hard about communicating information in non-visual ways -- through weight, shape, touch, movement. His recent explorations into shape-shifting cell phones are part of a long career of thinking beyond the touchscreen. Along with his shape-shifting mobile phones, his newest work explores haptic feedback in pens. He's a design researcher at Deutsche Telekom Laboratories and is working on his PhD in Berlin.

His master's thesis is an elegant exploration of the non-visual -- exploring the surprising effects of closing one's eyes during a movie or a first-person shooter game.

Z jednej strony mamy świat cyfrowy,

Now, I have threetrzy optionsopcje that I would like to showpokazać you.
18
44000
3000
Chciałbym przedstawić trzy pomysły.
01:02
The first one is massmasa.
19
47000
2000
Po pierwsze: masa.
01:04
As humansludzie, we are sensitivewrażliwy

to where an objectobiekt in our handdłoń is heavyciężki.
21
51000

01:08
So, could we use that in mobilemobilny phonestelefony?
22
53000

Czy da się to zastosować w telefonach komórkowych?
01:11
Let me showpokazać you the weight-shiftingCiężar shifting mobilemobilny.
23
56000
2000
Pokażę wam telefon ze zmiennym środkiem ciężkości.
01:13
It is a mobilemobilny phone-shapedtelefon w kształcie boxpudełko
24

To jest pudełko w kształcie telefonu.
01:15
that has an ironżelazo weightwaga insidewewnątrz, whichktóry we can moveruszaj się around,

3000
W środku ma ruchomy żelazny ciężarek.
01:18
and you can feel where it's heavyciężki.

Czuć, w jakim miejscu jest cieżkie.
01:20
We shiftprzesunięcie the gravitationalgrawitacyjny centercentrum of it.
27
65000
3000
Zmienia się środek cieżkości.
01:23
For exampleprzykład, we can augmentulepszenie digitalcyfrowy contentzadowolony
28
68000
3000
Możemy wyrazić dane cyfrowe,
01:26
with physicalfizyczny massmasa.
29
71000
2000
przy użyciu ciężaru.
01:28
So you moveruszaj się around the contentzadowolony on a displaypokaz,
30
73000
2000
Można manipulować danymi na ekranie,
01:30
but you can alsorównież feel where it is just from the weightwaga of the deviceurządzenie.
31
75000
3000
i czuć, gdzie się znajduje, dzięki zmianie ciężaru.
01:34
AnotherInnym thing it's good for is navigationNawigacja --
32
79000
3000
Przydaje się też przy nawigacji.
01:37
it can guideprzewodnik you around in a cityMiasto.
33
82000
2000
Może kierować was po mieście.
01:39
It can tell you by its weightwaga,
34
84000
2000
Przekazuje informacje dzięki ciężarowi.
01:41
"Okay, moveruszaj się right. WalkPieszo aheadprzed siebie. Make a left here."
35
86000
3000
"Skręć w prawo. Idź prosto, Skręć w lewo"
01:44
And the good thing about that is you don't have to look at the deviceurządzenie all the time;
36
89000
3000
W dodatku nie trzeba patrzeć na urządzenie przez cały czas.
01:47
you have your eyesoczy freewolny to see the cityMiasto.
37
92000
2000
Oczy są wolne i mogą podziwiać widoki.
01:49
Now, massmasa is the first thing;
38
94000
3000
Pierwsza sprawa to masa.
01:52
the seconddruga thing, that's shapekształt.
39
97000
2000
Następna rzecz to kształt.
01:54
We're alsorównież sensitivewrażliwy to the shapekształt of objectsobiekty we have in [our] handsręce.
40
99000
3000
Wyczuwamy kształt rzeczy trzymanych w ręku.
01:57
So if I downloadpobieranie an e-booke-book and it has 20 pagesstrony --
41
102000
3000
Gdybym ściągnął 20-stronicowego e-booka,
02:00
well, they could be thincienki, right --
42
105000
2000
to byłby dosyć cienki,
02:02
but if it has 500 pagesstrony, I want to feel that "HarryHarry PotterPotter" --
43
107000
3000
ale 500-stronicowego "Harry'ego Pottera" chciałbym poczuć.
02:05
it's thickgruby. (LaughterŚmiech)
44
110000
2000
To gruba książka.
02:07
So let me showpokazać you the shape-changingZmiana kształtu mobilemobilny.
45
112000
3000
Pokażę wam telefon zmieniający kształt .
02:10
Again, it's a mobilemobilny phone-shapedtelefon w kształcie boxpudełko,
46
115000
2000
Znów widać pudełko w kształcie telefonu.
02:12
and this one can changezmiana its shapekształt.
47
117000
2000
Potrafi zmieniać kształt.
02:16
We can playgrać with the shapekształt itselfsamo.
48
121000
2000
Możemy manipulować kształtem.
02:18
For exampleprzykład, it can be thincienki in your pocketkieszeń,
49
123000
2000
Potrafi być cienki w kieszeni,
02:20
whichktóry we of coursekurs want it to be;
50
125000
2000
co jest pożądane,
02:22
but then if you holdutrzymać it in your handdłoń, it can leanpochylać się towardsw kierunku you, be thickgruby.
51
127000
3000
ale trzymany w ręku może zgrubieć.
02:25
It's like taperedstożkowe to the downsideminusem.
52
130000
2000
Zwęża się ku dołowi.
02:27
If you changezmiana the graspchwycić, it can adjustdostosować to that.
53
132000
3000
Gdy zmienimy chwyt, potrafi się przystosować.
02:31
It's alsorównież usefulprzydatny if you want to put it down on your nightstandstolik nocny to watch a moviefilm
54
136000
3000
Jeśli ma leżeć na nocnym stoliku i pokazywać film,
02:34
or use as an alarmalarm clockzegar, it standsstojaki.
55
139000
3000
albo posłużyć za budzik, potrafi stać.
02:37
It's fairlydość simpleprosty.
56
142000
2000
Jest to dosyć proste.
02:39
AnotherInnym thing is,
57
144000
2000
Po wtóre,
02:41
sometimesczasami we watch things on a mobilemobilny phonetelefon,
58
146000
2000
czasami przeglądamy na komórce
02:43
they are biggerwiększy than the phonetelefon itselfsamo.
59
148000
2000
rzeczy większe od ekranu.
02:45
So in that casewalizka -- like here, there's an appaplikacja that's biggerwiększy than the phone'stelefon screenekran --
60
150000
3000
Tu mamy aplikację szerszą od ekranu.
02:48
the shapekształt of the phonetelefon could tell you,
61
153000
2000
Kształt telefonu potrafiłby wskazać:
02:50
"Okay, off the screenekran right here, there is more contentzadowolony.
62
155000
2000
" Po tej stronie ekranu jest więcej danych.
02:52
You can't see it, but it's there."
63
157000
2000
Nie widać ich, ale tam są."
02:54
And you can feel that because it's thickergrubszy at that edgekrawędź.
64
159000
3000
Poczujemy to, bo krawędź staje się grubsza.
02:57
The shapekształt is the seconddruga thing.
65
162000
3000
To jest właśnie kształt.
03:00
The thirdtrzeci thing operatesdziała on a differentróżne levelpoziom.
66
165000
3000
Trzecia rzecz działa na innej zasadzie.
03:03
As humansludzie, we are socialspołeczny, we are empathicempatyczny,
67
168000
3000
Jako ludzie jesteśmy towarzyscy.
03:06
and that's great.
68
171000
2000
To jest wspaniałe.
03:08
Wouldn'tNie that be a way to make mobilemobilny phonestelefony more intuitiveintuicyjny?
69
173000
3000
Może tak zwiększymy intuicyjność telefonów?
03:11
Think of a hamsterchomik in the pocketkieszeń.
70
176000
2000
Pomyślcie o chomiku w kieszeni.
03:13
Well, I can feel it, it's doing all right -- I don't have to checkczek it.
71
178000
3000
Czuć że żyje, nie trzeba go wyciągać i sprawdzać.
03:16
Let me showpokazać you the livingżycie mobilemobilny phonetelefon.
72
181000
3000
Pokażę wam żyjący telefon.
03:19
So, oncepewnego razu again, mobilemobilny phone-shapedtelefon w kształcie boxpudełko,
73
184000
3000
Znowu widać pudełko.
03:22
but this one, it has a breathoddech and a heartbeatbicie serca,
74
187000
3000
Ale oddycha i bije mu serce.
03:25
and it feelsczuje very organicorganiczny.
75
190000
2000
Sprawia wrażenie organicznego.
03:27
(LaughterŚmiech)
76

77

2000
Teraz jest spokojny.
03:31
Oh now, missedbrakowało call, a newNowy call,
78
196000
2000
O, nowe połączenie.
03:33
newNowy girlfrienddziewczyna maybe --
79
198000
2000
Może dziewczyna dzwoni?
03:35
very excitingekscytujący. (LaughterŚmiech)
80
200000
3000
Bardzo podniecające.
03:38
How do we calmspokojna it down?
81
203000
2000
Jak go uspokoić?
03:40
You give it a patpoklepać behindza the earsuszy,
