ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Guillaume Néry - World champion freediver
With just one breath, Guillaume Néry can dive to -125m below the water's surface.

Why you should listen

Guillaume Néry is a French freediving champion, specializing in deep diving. As a multiple world record holder and the double reigning world champion, Guillaume's goals go well beyond the simple realm of sport. With a perfect combination of aesthetics, performance, films and exploration, Guillaume practices his discipline like an art form — it has become his way of life.

Guillaume grew up by the Mediterranean Sea, in Nice. As a child, he used to go diving every summer with his flippers and mask, accompanied by his father, to discover the wonders of the underwater world. At the age of 14, he and a friend took up a challenge: to hold their breath for as long as possible. The simple game became an obsession and led him one day to meet Claude Chapuis, the founder of the international AIDA federation (Worldwide Federation for breath-hold diving). Claude became Guillaume’s mentor.

True to the Nice school of diving, Guillaume devoted all his time and energy to his passion. He made huge progress when working alongside Loic Leferme (5x No-Limits world record holder), who later became a role model, guide and close friend.

In 2002, he became the youngest ever freedive record holder, by diving to a depth of -87m using the force of his fins alone. That marked the beginning of a great adventure. Guillaume then beat the world record 3 times, became the world team champion in 2008 and the individual world champion in Greece in 2011, diving down to -117m. Nowadays, he dives until -125m of depth, the new French record

Guillaume also teaches deep diving at his school, CIPA (in Nice), conducts training, is involved in business life and sets sail across the world's oceans searching for new areas to explore.

However, it was thanks to the film he produced in 2010 with his partner Julie Gautier, Free Fall, that the Frenchman's career truly took off. One scene shows Guillaume walking on a seabed, towards an underwater chasm: the Deans Blue Hole (Bahamas), the deepest blue hole in the world. Suddenly, he jumps into emptiness and starts his free fall into the chasm. In just a few days, these images had been seen all around the world, revealing a new, artistic and poetic approach to freediving.

Since then, the couple has carried out a number of other film projects, including Narcoses or, recently, Ocean Gravity. They also launched their own website dedicated to all their creations: www.lesfilmsengloutis.com

02:37
That dive you just watched is a journey --
16
145418
3204
Esse mergulho que você acabaram
de ver é uma jornada.
02:40
a journey between two breaths.
17
148646
2214
Uma jornada entre duas respiradas.
02:43
A journey that takes place
between two breaths --
18
151367
2295
Uma jornada que acontece
entre duas respiradas:
02:45
the last one before diving into the water,
19
153686
2254
a última antes de mergulhar na água,
02:47
and the first one,
coming back to the surface.
20
155964
2830
e a primeira, ao voltar para a superfície.
02:51
That dive is a journey
to the very limits of human possibility,
21
159394
4374
Esse mergulho é uma jornada
aos limites da capacidade humana,
02:55
a journey into the unknown.
22
163792
1936
uma jornada ao desconhecido.
02:58
But it's also, and above all,
an inner journey,
23
166315
3531
Mas acima de tudo, é uma jornada interior,
03:01
where a number of things happen,
24
169870
2394
onde uma série de coisas acontecem,
03:04
physiologically as well as mentally.
25
172288
2329
tanto fisiológica quanto mentalmente.
03:06
And that's why I'm here today,
26
174641
2016
E é por isso que estou aqui hoje,
03:08
to share my journey with you
and to take you along with me.
27
176681
3333
para compartilhar minha jornada
com vocês e levá-los comigo.
Começamos com a última respirada.
03:12
So, we start with the last breath.
28
180038
2465
03:15
(Breathing in)
29
183987
3075
(Inspirando)
03:29
(Breathing out)
30
197279
1840
(Expirando)
03:31
As you noticed, that last breath
in is slow, deep and intense.
31
199143
4443
Como vocês notaram, a última inspirada
é lenta, profunda e intensa.
03:35
It ends with a special technique
called the carp,
32
203610
2556
Termina com uma técnica especial
chamada a carpa,
03:38
which allows me to store one to two
extra liters of air in my lungs
33
206190
3641
que me proporciona de um a dois litros
extras de ar nos pulmões
03:41
by compressing it.
34
209855
2113
por o fazer comprimir.
03:43
When I leave the surface,
I have about 10 liters of air in my lungs.
35
211992
4595
Quando eu deixo a superfície, tenho
cerca de 10 litros de ar nos meus pulmões
03:49
As soon as I leave the surface
the first mechanism kicks in:
36
217539
3521
Assim que eu deixo a superfície
o primeiro mecanismo é ativado:
03:53
the diving reflex.
37
221084
1436
o reflexo do mergulho.
03:54
The first thing the diving reflex does
is make your heart rate drop.
38
222544
4884
a primeira coisa que o reflexo causa
é uma queda do ritmo cardíaco.
03:59
My heart beat will drop
from about 60-70 per minute
39
227452
2833
Meu batimento cardíaco
cai de 60-70 por minuto
04:02
to about 30-40 beats per minute
40
230309
1780
para cerca de 30-40 batidas por minuto
04:04
in a matter of seconds;
almost immediately.
41
232113
2921
em questão de segundos,
quase imediatamente.
04:07
Next, the diving reflex causes
peripheral vasoconstriction,
42
235058
3089
Depois, o reflexo causa
vasoconstrição periférica,
04:10
which means that the blood flow
will leave the body's extremities
43
238171
4170
o que significa que o fluxo sanguíneo
sai das extremidades do corpo
04:14
to feed the most important organs:
44
242365
3344
para alimentar os órgãos mais importantes:
04:18
the lungs, the heart and the brain.
45
246382
3421
os pulmões, o coração e o cérebro.
04:22
This mechanism is innate.
46
250602
3484
Esse mecanismo é inato.
04:26
I cannot control it.
47
254110
1416
Não consigo controlá-lo.
04:27
If you go underwater,
even if you've never done it before,
48
255550
2792
Se você submerge,
mesmo se for sua primeira vez,
04:30
you'll experience the exact same effects.
49
258366
2345
você vai passar pelo exato mesmo processo.
04:32
All human beings
50
260735
3623
Todos seres humanos
têm essa característica.
04:36
And what's extraordinary
51
264382
1926
E o extraordinário
04:38
is that we share this instinct
with marine mammals --
52
266332
3517
é que compartilhamos esse instinto
com mamíferos marinhos
04:41
all marine mammals:
dolphins, whales, sea lions, etc.
53
269873
3658
todos os mamíferos marinhos:
golfinhos, baleias, leões marinhos, etc.
04:45
When they dive deep into the ocean,
these mechanisms become activated,
54
273555
4596
Quando eles mergulham ao fundo,
esses mecanismos se ativam,
04:50
but to a greater extent.
55
278175
1333
mas em uma escala maior.
04:51
And, of course, it works
much better for them.
56
279532
2523
E, claro, funciona muito melhor para eles.
É absolutamente fascinante.
04:55
It's absolutely fascinating.
57
283970
1394
Assim que eu deixo a superfície,
04:57
Right as I leave the surface,
58
285388
1426
04:58
nature gives me a push
in the right direction,
59
286838
2309
a natureza me dá um empurrão
na direção certa,
05:01
allowing me to descend with confidence.
60
289171
2392
permitindo-me descer com confiança.
05:03
So as I dive deeper into the blue,
61
291587
2016
À medida que mergulho na imensidão azul,
05:05
the pressure slowly starts
to squeeze my lungs.
62
293627
3992
a pressão começa a espremer
meus pulmões lentamente.
05:10
And since it's the amount of air
in my lungs that makes me float,
63
298338
3251
E já que a porção de oxigênio
nos meus pulmões que me faz flutuar,
05:13
the farther down I go,
the more pressure there is on my lungs,
64
301613
2928
quanto mais eu desço,
maior a pressão nos meus pulmões,
05:16
the less air they contain
and the easier it is for my body to fall.
65
304565
3603
menos ar eles contém
e fácil é para que eu desmaie.
05:20
And at one point,
around 35 or 40 meters down,
66
308192
2803
Em um certo ponto,
a cerca de 35 ou 40 metros,
05:23
I don't even need to swim.
67
311019
2689
eu nem preciso mais nadar.
05:26
My body is dense and heavy enough
to fall into the depths by itself,
68
314468
4771
meu corpo fica denso o suficiente
para afundar sozinho,
05:31
and I enter what's called
the free fall phase.
69
319263
2595
e eu inicio a chamada fase de queda livre.
05:33
The free fall phase
is the best part of the dive.
70
321882
2722
A fase de queda livre
é a melhor parte do mergulho;
05:36
It's the reason I still dive.
71
324628
1878
É a razão pela qual eu ainda mergulho.
05:38
Because it feels like
you're being pulled down
72
326530
3960
Porque parece que você está
sendo puxado para baixo
05:43
and you don't need to do anything.
73
331401
1697
E não precisa fazer nada.
05:45
I can go from 35 meters to 123 meters
without making a single movement.
74
333122
3894
Eu posso ir de 35 metros a 123 metros
sem fazer nenhum movimento.
05:49
I let myself be pulled by the depths,
75
337040
1942
Eu me deixo ser puxado para o fundo,
05:51
and it feels like I'm flying underwater.
76
339006
1938
e tenho a sensação
de voar debaixo d'água
05:52
It's truly an amazing feeling --
an extraordinary feeling of freedom.
77
340968
3983
É uma sensação incrível,
uma incrível sensação de liberdade.
05:56
And so I slowly continue
sliding to the bottom.
78
344975
2983
E assim eu continuo
a descer lentamente até o fundo.
05:59
40 meters down,
79
347982
1280
A 40 metros,
06:01
50 meters down,
80
349286
1297
a 50 metros,
06:02
and between 50 and 60 meters,
a second physiological response kicks in.
81
350607
4227
e entre 50 e 60 metros,
uma segunda reação fisiológica é ativada.
06:07
My lungs reach residual volume,
82
355702
2516
Meu pulmões atingem volume residual,
06:10
below which they're not supposed
to be compressed, in theory.
83
358242
4939
abaixo do qual eles não devem
ser comprimidos, em teoria.
06:15
And this second response
is called blood shift,
84
363205
3526
E essa segunda reação
se chama "blood shift"
06:18
or "pulmonary erection" in French.
85
366755
2603
ou "ereção pulmonar" em francês.
06:22
I prefer "blood shift."
86
370236
1309
Eu prefiro blood shift.
06:23
(Laughter)
87
371569
1157
(Risos)
06:24
So blood shift -- how does it work?
88
372750
2745
Blood shift, como funciona?
06:27
The capillaries in the lungs
become engorged with blood --
89
375519
4574
Os capilares no pulmões absorvem sangue,
06:32
which is caused by the suction --
90
380117
1593
o que é causado pela sucção,
06:33
so the lungs can harden
91
381734
1711
para que possam endurecer
06:35
and protect the whole chest cavity
from being crushed.
92
383469
2672
e evitar que toda a cavidade
torácica seja esmagada.
06:38
It prevents the two walls
of the lungs from collapsing,
93
386165
3903
Evita que as duas paredes
dos pulmões desmoronem,
06:42
from sticking together and caving in.
94
390092
1962
grudem uma na outra ou cedam.
06:44
Thanks to this phenomenon,
which we also share with marine mammals,
95
392078
3889
Graças a esse fenômeno, que também
compartilhamos com os mamíferos marinhos,
06:47
I'm able to continue with my dive.
96
395991
1703
eu consigo continuar meu mergulho.
06:49
60, 70 meters down,
I keep falling, faster and faster,
97
397718
3576
A 60, 70 metros, eu continuo
caindo, cada vez mais rápido,
06:53
because the pressure is crushing
my body more and more.
98
401318
2912
pois a pressão está apertando
meu corpo cada vez mais.
06:56
Below 80 meters,
99
404254
1523
Abaixo de 80 metros,
06:58
the pressure becomes a lot stronger,
100
406355
2015
a pressão fica muito mais forte,
07:00
and I start to feel it physically.
101
408394
2071
e eu começo a senti-la fisicamente.
07:02
I really start to feel the suffocation.
102
410489
2005
Começo a sentir a sufocação.
07:04
You can see what it looks like --
not pretty at all.
103
412518
2460
Dá para ver como é. Não é bonito.
07:07
The diaphragm is completely collapsed,
the rib cage is squeezed in,
104
415002
4238
O diafragma cedeu completamente,
a caixa torácica está espremida,
07:11
and mentally, there is something
going on as well.
105
419824
2483
e mentalmente há algo acontecendo também.
Vocês podem pensar,
"Isso não parece prazeroso.
07:14
You may be thinking,
"This doesn't look enjoyable.
106
422331
2767
07:17
How do you do it?"
107
425122
1299
Como você faz?"
Se eu dependesse
dos meus reflexos mundanos...
07:18
If I relied on my earthly reflexes --
108
426445
1801
07:20
what do we do above water
when there's a problem?
109
428270
3463
O que fazemos fora d'água
quando temos um problema?
Nós resistimos, vamos contra.
07:23
We resist, we go against it.
110
431757
2209
Lutamos.
07:25
We fight.
111
433990
1343
Debaixo d'água, isso não funciona.
07:27
Underwater, that doesn't work.
112
435357
1532
Se você tentar isso debaixo d'água,
pode romper seus pulmões,
07:28
If you try that underwater,
you might tear your lungs,
113
436913
2592
cuspir sangue, desenvolver um edema
07:31
spit up blood, develop an edema
114
439529
1566
07:33
and you'll have to stop diving
for a good amount of time.
115
441119
3135
e vai ter que parar de mergulhar
por um bom tempo.
07:36
So what you need to do, mentally,
is to tell yourself
116
444278
3174
Então o que você precisa fazer,
mentalmente, é convencer-se
07:39
that nature and the elements
are stronger than you.
117
447476
2770
que a natureza e os elementos
são mais fortes que você.
07:42
And so I let the water crush me.
118
450270
2626
E assim que deixo a água me espremer.
07:44
I accept the pressure and go with it.
119
452920
2848
Eu aceito a pressão e me deixo levar.
07:48
At this point, my body
receives this information,
120
456481
2344
Nesse ponto, meu corpo
recebe a informação
07:50
and my lungs start relaxing.
121
458849
1858
e meus pulmões começam a relaxar.
07:52
I relinquish all control,
and relax completely.
122
460731
3143
Eu abro mão de todo controle
e relaxo completamente.
A pressão começa a me espremer,
e não é uma sensação ruim.
07:55
The pressure starts crushing me,
and it doesn't feel bad at all.
123
463898
3850
Eu até sinto que estou
protegido em um casulo.
07:59
I even feel like
I'm in a cocoon, protected.
124
467772
3310
08:03
And the dive continues.
125
471106
2572
E o mergulho continua.
08:05
80, 85 meters down,
126
473702
1698
A 80, 85 metros,
08:07
90,
127
475424
1219
90
08:08
100.
128
476667
1183
100.
08:09
100 meters -- the magic number.
129
477874
2586
100 metros, o número mágico.
Em todos os esportes é um número mágico.
08:13
In every sport, it's a magic number.
130
481024
1862
Para nadadores e atletas
e também para nós, mergulhadores,
08:14
For swimmers and athletes
and also for us, free divers,
131
482910
2830
08:17
it's a number everyone dreams of.
132
485764
1646
É um número com que todos sonham.
08:19
Everyone wishes one day
to be able to get to 100 meters.
133
487434
3398
Todos desejam chegar
um dia aos 100 metros.
08:22
And it's a symbolic number for us,
134
490856
1785
E é um número simbólico para nós,
08:24
because in the 1970s,
doctors and physiologists did their math,
135
492665
3867
porque nos anos 70, médicos
e fisiólogos fizeram os cálculos,
08:28
and predicted that the human body
would not be able to go below 100 meters.
136
496556
5309
e previram que o corpo humano
não suportaria ir a mais de 100 metros.
Abaixo disso, diziam eles,
o corpo humano implodiria.
08:33
Below that, they said,
the human body would implode.
137
501889
2856
08:36
And then the Frenchman, Jacques Mayol --
138
504769
2112
E o francês Jacques Mayol,
vocês o conhecem como o herói
em "Imensidão Azul",
08:38
you all know him as the hero
in "The Big Blue" --
139
506905
2293
08:41
came along and dived down to 100 meters.
140
509222
3253
veio e mergulho até 100 metros.
08:44
He even reached 105 meters.
141
512499
1565
Chegou até 105 metros.
08:46
At that time, he was doing "no limits."
142
514088
1896
Naquela época, ele estava
fazendo "sem limites".
08:48
He'd use weights to descend faster
and come back up with a balloon,
143
516008
3349
Ele usava pesos para descer mais rápido
e subia com um balão,
assim como no filme.
08:51
just like in the movie.
144
519381
1172
Hoje, nós vamos até 200 metros
em mergulho livre sem limites.
08:52
Today, we go down 200 meters
in no limit free diving.
145
520577
2578
08:55
I can do 123 meters
by simply using muscle strength.
146
523179
2856
Eu chego até 123 metros
somente com a força muscular.
08:58
And in a way, it's all thanks to him,
because he challenged known facts,
147
526059
3731
E de certo modo, é graças a ele,
porque ele desafiou fatos conhecidos,
09:01
and with a sweep of his hand,
got rid of the theoretical beliefs
148
529814
4367
e com um gesto de sua mão,
se livrou dessas crenças teóricas
e todos os limites mentais que gostamos
de impôr a nós mesmos.
09:06
and all the mental limits
that we like to impose on ourselves.
149
534205
3401
Ele nos mostrou que o corpo humano
tem uma habilidade infinita de adaptação.
09:09
He showed us that the human body
has an infinite ability to adapt.
150
537630
3616
09:13
So I carry on with my dive.
151
541270
1719
E assim eu sigo mergulhando.
09:15
105, 110, 115.
152
543013
2134
105, 110, 115.
09:17
The bottom is getting closer.
153
545171
1770
O fundo está chegando.
09:18
120,
154
546965
1476
120,
09:20
123 meters.
155
548465
1190
123 metros.
09:21
I'm at the bottom.
156
549679
1279
Cheguei ao fundo.
09:22
And now, I'd like to ask you to join me
and put yourself in my place.
157
550982
3610
E agora, eu gostaria de convidá-los
a colocarem-se no meu lugar.
09:26
Close your eyes.
158
554616
1635
Fechem os olhos.
09:28
Imagine you get to 123 meters.
159
556752
2769
Imaginem que chegaram a 123 metros.
09:33
The surface is far, far away.
160
561541
2584
A superfície está muito longe.
09:36
You're alone.
161
564720
1456
Estão sozinhos.
09:39
There's hardly any light.
162
567864
1757
Quase não há luz.
09:42
It's cold --
163
570324
1255
Está frio,
09:43
freezing cold.
164
571603
1357
um frio congelante.
09:44
The pressure is crushing you completely --
165
572984
2053
A pressão os esmaga completamente,
09:47
13 times stronger than on the surface.
166
575061
2086
13 vezes mais forte que na superfície.
09:50
And I know what you're thinking:
167
578214
1909
E eu sei o que estão pensando:
09:52
"This is horrible.
168
580147
1949
"Isso é horrível.
09:54
What the hell am I doing here?
169
582120
1856
Que raios estou fazendo aqui?
09:56
He's insane."
170
584000
1690
Ele é maluco".
09:58
But no.
171
586484
1166
Mas não.
10:00
That's not what I think
when I'm down there.
172
588031
2260
Não é o que eu penso quando estou lá.
Quando estou no fundo, eu me sinto bem.
10:02
When I'm at the bottom, I feel good.
173
590315
1725
10:04
I get this extraordinary
feeling of well-being.
174
592064
2257
Tenho essa sensação
extraordinária de bem-estar.
10:06
Maybe it's because I've completely
released all tensions
175
594345
2889
Talvez porque eu abandonei
completamente toda tensão
10:09
and let myself go.
176
597258
1721
e me deixei levar.
10:11
I feel great, without the need to breathe.
177
599003
3461
Eu me sinto ótimo,
sem a necessidade de respirar.
10:17
Although, you'd agree,
I should be worried.
178
605238
3960
Porém, vocês concordariam
que eu deveria me preocupar.
10:21
I feel like a tiny dot,
a little drop of water,
179
609999
2323
Eu me sinto como um pontinho,
uma gotinha de água
10:24
floating in the middle of the ocean.
180
612346
1850
flutuando no meio do oceano.
10:26
And each time, I picture the same image.
181
614220
2635
E toda vez, eu imagino a mesma imagem.
10:29
[The Pale Blue Dot]
182
617736
2309
[O Pálido Ponto Azul]
10:32
It's that small dot
the arrow is pointing to.
183
620473
2454
É aquele pontinho
que a flecha está indicando.
10:34
Do you know what it is?
184
622951
1522
Vocês sabem o que é?
10:37
It's planet Earth.
185
625480
1390
É o planeta Terra.
10:39
Planet Earth, photographed
by the Voyager probe,
186
627478
2661
O planeta Terra, fotografado
pela sonda Voyager.
10:42
from 4 billion kilometers away.
187
630163
2152
a 4 bilhões de quilômetros de distância.
10:44
And it shows that our home
is that small dot over there,
188
632339
4096
E mostra que nossa casa
é aquele pontinho ali,
10:48
floating in the middle of nothing.
189
636459
1643
flutuando no meio do nada.
10:50
That's how I feel
190
638126
1921
É assim que eu me sinto
10:52
when I'm at the bottom, at 123 meters.
191
640071
2151
Quando estou no fundo, a 123 metros.
10:54
I feel like a small dot,
192
642246
1715
Sinto-me como um pontinho,
10:55
a speck of dust, stardust,
193
643985
2555
um grão de poeira, poeira estelar,
10:58
floating in the middle of the cosmos,
194
646564
2215
flutuando no meio do cosmo,
11:00
in the middle of nothing,
in the immensity of space.
195
648803
2444
no meio do nada,
na imensidão do espaço.
11:03
It's a fascinating sensation,
196
651271
1441
É uma sensação fascinante,
porque quando olho para cima, para baixo,
11:04
because when I look up, down,
left, right, in front, behind,
197
652736
4055
esquerda ou direita,
para cima ou para trás
11:08
I see the same thing:
the infinite deep blue.
198
656815
3191
Eu vejo a mesma coisa:
a imensidão azul.
11:12
Nowhere else on Earth
you can experience this --
199
660030
3016
Em nenhum outro lugar
na Terra você vê isso,
11:15
looking all around you,
and seeing the same thing.
200
663070
3563
olhar em todo seu redor
e ver a mesma coisa.
É extraordinário.
11:18
It's extraordinary.
201
666657
1250
11:20
And at that moment,
202
668562
1440
E nesse momento,
11:22
I still get that feeling each time,
building up inside of me --
203
670026
3001
Eu ainda tenho a sensação toda vez,
se formando dentro de mim,
11:25
the feeling of humility.
204
673051
2522
a sensação de humildade.
11:28
Looking at this picture,
I feel very humble --
205
676875
2906
Olhando para essa imagem,
eu me sinto muito humilde,
11:31
just like when I'm all the way
down at the bottom --
206
679805
2531
assim como quando estou lá no fundo,
11:34
because I'm nothing,
207
682360
1277
pois não sou nada,
11:35
I'm a little speck of nothingness
lost in all of time and space.
208
683661
3325
sou um grãozinho de nada
perdido no tempo e no espaço.
11:39
And it still is absolutely fascinating.
209
687652
2317
E ainda é absolutamente fascinante.
11:42
I decide to go back to the surface,
because this is not where I belong.
210
690660
3803
Eu decido voltar à superfície,
porque ali não é meu lugar.
11:46
I belong up there, on the surface.
211
694487
2229
Meu lugar é lá em cima, na superfície.
11:48
So I start heading back up.
212
696740
2177
E eu começo a subir.
11:52
I get something of a shock
213
700018
4251
E eu tenho uma espécie de choque
11:56
at the very moment when I decide to go up.
214
704293
2463
no exato momento que decido subir.
11:58
First, because it takes a huge effort
to tear yourself away from the bottom.
215
706780
3907
Pois é preciso um esforço colossal
para se levantar do fundo.
12:02
It pulled you down on the way in,
216
710711
2480
Te puxou para baixo quando na descida,
12:05
and will do the same on the way up.
217
713215
1883
e vai fazer o mesmo na subida.
12:07
You have to swim twice as hard.
218
715122
1815
Você tem que nadar duas vezes mais forte.
12:10
Then, I'm hit with another
phenomenon known as narcosis.
219
718480
3028
Então me ocorre um outro
fenômeno chamado narcose.
Não sei se já ouviram falar disso.
12:13
I don't know if you've heard of that.
220
721522
1772
Chama-se narcose por nitrogênio.
12:15
It's called nitrogen narcosis.
221
723318
2127
É algo que acontece
com mergulhadores dependentes,
12:17
It's something that happens
to scuba divers,
222
725469
2137
12:19
but it can happen to free divers.
223
727630
1619
mas pode acontecer no mergulho livre.
12:21
It's caused by nitrogen
dissolving in the blood,
224
729273
3529
É causado por nitrogênio
sendo dissolvido no sangue,
o que causa confusão
12:24
which causes confusion
225
732826
1894
12:26
between the conscious
and unconscious mind.
226
734744
2603
entre a consciência e o inconsciente.
12:30
A flurry of thoughts goes spinning
through your head.
227
738212
4207
Um bolo de ideias passa
girando pela sua cabeça.
12:34
You can't control them,
and you shouldn't try to --
228
742443
2996
Você não consegue controlá-las,
e você nem deveria tentar,
tem que deixar rolar.
12:37
you have to let it happen.
229
745463
1584
12:39
The more you try to control it,
the harder it is to manage.
230
747071
3707
Quando mais você tenta
controlar, mais difícil é.
12:43
Then, a third thing happens:
231
751223
1468
E uma terceira coisa acontece:
o desejo de respirar.
12:44
the desire to breathe.
232
752715
1269
12:46
I'm not a fish, I'm a human being,
233
754008
2310
Eu não sou um peixe,
sou um ser humano,
12:48
and the desire to breathe
reminds me of that fact.
234
756342
3521
e o desejo de respirar
me lembra da realidade.
12:51
Around 60, 70 meters,
235
759887
1864
A cerca de 60, 70 metros,
12:55
you start to feel the need to breathe.
236
763551
2253
você começa a sentir
a necessidade de respirar.
12:59
And with everything else that's going on,
237
767650
2436
E com tudo o mais que está acontecendo,
13:02
you can very easily lose your ground
238
770110
2937
é muito fácil perder o controle
e entrar em pânico.
13:05
and start to panic.
239
773071
1539
Quando isso acontece, você pensa:
"Onde está a superfície?
13:07
When that happens, you think,
"Where's the surface?
240
775871
2421
Eu quero subir, quero respirar agora."
13:10
I want to go up. I want to breathe now."
241
778316
1935
13:12
You should not do that.
242
780275
1632
Você não deve fazer isso.
13:13
Never look up to the surface --
243
781931
1834
Nunca olhe para a superfície,
13:15
not with your eyes, or your mind.
244
783789
2629
nem com os olhos, nem com a mente.
13:19
You should never
picture yourself up there.
245
787161
2729
Você nunca deve se imaginar lá em cima.
13:21
You have to stay in the present.
246
789914
1638
Você tem que ficar no presente.
13:23
I look at the rope right in front of me,
leading me back to the surface.
247
791576
4822
Eu olho para a corda na minha frente,
me levando de volta à superfície.
13:28
And I focus on that,
on the present moment.
248
796834
2510
E foco aquilo no momento presente.
Porque se eu pensar na superfície,
eu entro em pânico.
13:31
Because if I think
about the surface, I panic.
249
799829
2176
13:34
And if I panic, it's over.
250
802029
1689
E se eu entrar em pânico, já era.
13:36
Time goes faster this way.
251
804925
2211
O tempo passa mais rápido assim.
13:39
And at 30 meters: deliverance.
252
807160
2095
E a 30 metros, o salvamento.
Não estou mais sozinho.
13:41
I'm not alone any more.
253
809279
1404
Os mergulhadores de segurança,
meus anjos da guarda, se aproximam.
13:42
The safety divers,
my guardian angels, join me.
254
810707
3399
Deixam a superfície,
nos encontramos a 30 metros,
13:46
They leave the surface,
we meet at 30 meters,
255
814130
2323
13:48
and they escort me
for the final few meters,
256
816477
2154
e eles me acompanham pelos últimos metros,
13:50
where potential problems could arise.
257
818655
2676
onde potencialmente
poderá haver problemas.
13:53
Every time I see them, I think to myself,
258
821881
2345
Toda vez que os vejo, eu penso:
"É graças a vocês."
13:57
"It's thanks to you."
259
825253
1588
É graças a eles,
minha equipe, que estou aqui.
13:58
It's thanks to them,
my team, that I'm here.
260
826865
2096
14:00
It brings back the sense of humility.
261
828985
2181
Me retorna o senso de humildade.
14:03
Without my team, without all
the people around me,
262
831611
3445
Sem minha equipe,
sem as pessoas ao meu redor,
A aventura au fundo seria impossível.
14:07
the adventure into the deep
would be impossible.
263
835080
2355
14:09
A journey into the deep
is above all a group effort.
264
837459
3228
A jornada ao fundo é, acima de tudo,
um esforço em equipe.
14:13
So I'm happy to finish
my journey with them,
265
841359
2258
Estou feliz de terminar
minha jornada com eles,
14:15
because I wouldn't be here
if it weren't for them.
266
843641
2494
porque eu não estaria aqui
se não fosse por eles.
20 metros, 10 metros,
14:18
20 meters, 10 meters,
267
846159
1591
14:19
my lungs slowly return
to their normal volume.
268
847774
2247
meus pulmões lentamente
voltam ao volume normal.
14:22
Buoyancy pushes me up to the surface.
269
850045
2347
O empuxo me traz de volta à superfície.
14:24
Five meters below the surface,
I start to breathe out,
270
852416
3548
Cinco metros abaixo da superfície,
eu começo a expirar,
14:27
so that as soon as I get
to the surface all I do is breathe in.
271
855988
3265
para que assim que chegar à superfície,
tudo que faço é inspirar.
14:31
And so I arrive at the surface.
272
859277
1965
E eu chego à superfície.
14:33
(Breathing in)
273
861544
2925
(Inspirando)
14:39
Air floods into my lungs.
274
867667
1994
Ar enche meus pulmões.
É como nascer novamente, um alívio.
14:41
It's like being born again, a relief.
275
869685
2388
14:44
It feels good.
276
872896
1155
É bom.
Apesar de a jornada
ter sido extraordinária,
14:46
Though the journey was extraordinary,
277
874075
1866
14:47
I do need to feel those small
oxygen molecules fueling my body.
278
875965
3952
Eu preciso daquelas pequenas moléculas
de oxigênio alimentando meu corpo.
14:52
It's an extraordinary sensation,
but at the same time it's traumatizing.
279
880385
3585
É uma sensação extraordinária,
mas ao mesmo tempo traumatizante.
14:55
It's a shock to the system,
as you can you imagine.
280
883994
2397
É um choque ao sistema,
como podem imaginar.
14:58
I go from complete darkness
to the light of day,
281
886415
2773
Passo de completa escuridão à luz do dia,
15:01
from the near-silence of the depths
to the commotion up top.
282
889212
4222
do quase silêncio das profundezas
à comoção no topo.
15:06
In terms of touch, I go from the soft,
velvety feeling of the water,
283
894388
4533
Em termos de tato, eu passo
da sensação suave e aveludada da água,
ao ar soprando contra meu rosto.
15:10
to air rubbing across my face.
284
898945
2302
15:13
In terms of smell,
285
901271
2977
Em termos de olfato,
15:16
there is air rushing into my lungs.
286
904272
2636
há ar invadindo meus pulmões.
15:18
And in return, my lungs open up.
287
906932
2412
E em troca, meus pulmões se abrem.
Estavam completamente
espremidos um minuto e meio antes,
15:21
They were completely squashed
just 90 seconds ago,
288
909368
2543
15:23
and now, they've opened up again.
289
911935
1688
e agora se abriram novamente.
15:25
So all of this affects
quite a lot of things.
290
913647
3836
E isso tudo afeta muitas coisas.
15:29
I need a few seconds to come back,
291
917507
2320
Preciso de alguns segundos para voltar,
E sentir "aquilo tudo" de novo.
15:31
and to feel "all there" again.
292
919851
1579
15:33
But that needs to happen quickly,
293
921454
1582
Mas isso tem que acontecer rápido,
15:35
because the judges are there
to verify my performance;
294
923060
3112
porque os juízes estão lá
para julgar meu desempenho.
Preciso mostrar-lhes que
estou em perfeita condição física.
15:38
I need to show them
I'm in perfect physical condition.
295
926196
2585
Vocês viram no vídeo,
eu fazia o chamado protocolo de saída
15:40
You saw in the video,
I was doing a so-called exit protocol.
296
928805
2852
15:43
Once at the surface, I have 15 seconds
to take off my nose clip,
297
931681
4163
Uma vez na superfície, eu tenho
15 segundos para tirar o clipe de nariz,
15:48
give this signal and say
(English) "I am OK."
298
936684
2881
dar este sinal e dizer "I am OK".
Além disso, você tem que ser bilíngue.
15:51
Plus, you need to be bilingual.
299
939989
1498
15:53
(Laughter)
300
941511
1442
(Risos)
Depois de tudo que eu fiz,
15:54
On top of everything --
301
942977
1166
15:56
that's not very nice.
302
944167
1269
não é muito legal.
Depois do protocolo, os juízes
me mostram um cartão branco,
15:58
Once the protocol is completed,
the judges show me a white card,
303
946897
3651
E é aí que a alegria começa.
16:02
and that's when the joy starts.
304
950572
1597
16:04
I can finally celebrate
what has just happened.
305
952501
2700
Finalmente eu posso comemorar
o que acabou de acontecer.
16:07
So, the journey I've just described to you
306
955976
2278
E a jornada que eu acabei
de descrever a vocês
16:10
is a more extreme version of free diving.
307
958278
3173
é uma versão mais extrema
de mergulho livre.
16:13
Luckily, it's far from just that.
308
961921
2191
Por sorte, está longe de ser só isso.
16:16
For the past few years,
309
964136
1207
Nos últimos anos,
16:17
I've been trying to show
another side of free diving,
310
965367
2687
Eu tentei mostrar
um outro lado do mergulho livre,
16:20
because the media mainly talks
about competitions and records.
311
968078
3107
porque a mídia dá ênfase
a competições e recordes.
Mas o mergulho livre
é mais do que só isso.
16:23
But free diving is more than just that.
312
971209
1881
16:25
It's about being at ease in the water.
313
973114
1928
Trata-se de sentir-se à vontade na água.
16:27
It's extremely beautiful,
very poetic and artistic.
314
975066
2984
É extremamente bonito,
muito poético e artístico.
E minha esposa e eu
decidimos filmar
16:30
So my wife and I decided to film it
315
978074
2064
e tentar mostrar um outro lado,
16:32
and try to show another side of it,
316
980162
2526
principalmente para incentivar
as pessoas a entrar na água.
16:35
mostly to make people want
to go into the water.
317
983284
2444
16:38
Let me show you some images
to finish my story.
318
986089
4495
Vou mostrar umas imagens
para finalizar minha história.
16:43
It's a mix of beautiful underwater photos.
319
991854
2182
É uma mistura de belas
imagens subaquáticas.
(Música)
16:46
(Music)
320
994060
1152
16:47
I'd like you to know that if one day
you try to stop breathing,
321
995236
5059
Eu gostaria que você soubesse
que se um dia tentar parar de respirar,
16:52
you'll realize that
when you stop breathing,
322
1000319
2296
você vai perceber que
quando para de respirar,
16:54
you stop thinking, too.
323
1002639
2087
você para de pensar também.
16:57
It calms your mind.
324
1005355
1792
Acalma a sua mente.
16:59
Today, in the 21st century,
we're under so much pressure.
325
1007934
3286
Hoje, no século 21,
estamos sob tanta pressão.
Nossas mentes estão sobrecarregadas,
a milhões de quilômetros por hora,
17:03
Our minds are overworked,
we think at a million miles an hour,
326
1011244
3027
17:06
we're always stressed.
327
1014295
1880
estamos sempre estressados.
17:08
Being able to free dive
lets you, just for a moment,
328
1016199
3004
Poder fazer mergulho livre
te permite, só por um momento,
relaxar a mente.
17:11
relax your mind.
329
1019227
1475
17:13
Holding your breath underwater
330
1021362
1992
Segurar a respiração debaixo d'água
17:15
means giving yourself the chance
to experience weightlessness.
331
1023378
3996
significa dar-se a oportunidade
de experimentar a leveza.
17:19
It means being underwater, floating,
332
1027398
2954
significa estar debaixo d'água, flutuando,
17:22
with your body completely relaxed,
letting go of all your tensions.
333
1030376
3823
com seu corpo completamente relaxado,
deixando de lado todas as tensões.
Esta é nossa condição no século 21:
17:26
This is our plight in the 21st century:
334
1034223
1879
Nossas costas doem,
nosso pescoço dói, tudo dói
17:28
our backs hurt, our necks hurt,
everything hurts,
335
1036126
2317
porque estamos estressados
e tensos o tempo todo.
17:30
because we're stressed
and tense all the time.
336
1038467
2209
17:32
But when you're in the water,
337
1040700
1429
Mas quando você está na água,
17:34
you let yourself float,
as if you were in space.
338
1042153
2590
Você se deixa flutuar
como se estivesse no espaço.
17:37
You let yourself go completely.
339
1045151
1684
Você relaxa completamente.
É uma sensação extraordinária.
17:38
It's an extraordinary feeling.
340
1046859
1493
17:40
You can finally get in touch
with your body, mind and spirit.
341
1048376
5657
Você finalmente pode se conectar
com seu corpo, mente e espírito.
17:46
Everything feels better, all at once.
342
1054476
2038
Tudo melhora, tudo de uma vez.
17:49
Learning how to free dive is also
about learning to breathe correctly.
343
1057952
4195
Aprender mergulho livre também se trata
de aprender a respirar corretamente.
17:54
We breathe with our first breath
at birth, up until our last one.
344
1062718
4458
Respiramos pela primeira vez ao nascer,
até nosso último respiro.
17:59
Breathing gives rhythm to our lives.
345
1067200
3554
Respirar traz ritmo a nossas vidas.
18:02
Learning how to breathe better
is learning how to live better.
346
1070778
3349
Aprender a respirar melhor
é aprender a viver melhor.
18:06
Holding your breath in the sea,
not necessarily at 100 meters,
347
1074746
3135
Segurar a respiração no mar,
não necessariamente a 100 metros,
mas talvez a dois ou três,
18:09
but maybe at two or three,
348
1077905
1275
colocando seus óculos,
um par de pés de pato,
18:11
putting on your goggles,
a pair of flippers,
349
1079204
2066
18:13
means you can go see another world,
350
1081294
1696
significa poder ir ver outro mundo,
18:15
another universe, completely magical.
351
1083014
2058
outro universo, completamente mágico.
18:17
You can see little fish, seaweed,
the flora and fauna,
352
1085096
3405
Você pode ver peixinhos,
algas, a flora e a fauna,
você pode observar tudo discretamente,
18:20
you can watch it all discreetly,
353
1088525
2318
18:22
sliding underwater, looking around,
and coming back to the surface,
354
1090867
3286
deslizando debaixo d'água, observando,
e voltando à superfície,
sem deixar rastro.
18:26
leaving no trace.
355
1094177
1507
É uma sensação incrível
tornar-se um com a natureza assim.
18:28
It's an amazing feeling
to become one with nature like that.
356
1096096
4056
18:33
And if I may say one more thing,
357
1101219
2472
E se eu puder dizer uma outra coisa,
18:36
holding your breath, being in the water,
finding this underwater world --
358
1104509
5167
segurar a respiração, estar na água,
encontrar esse mundo subaquático,
trata-se tudo de conectar-se
consigo mesmo.
18:41
it's all about connecting with yourself.

18:43
You heard me talk a lot
about the body's memory
360
1111693

Vocês me ouviram falar muito
sobre a memória do corpo
que remonta a milhões de anos atrás,
às nossas origens aquáticas.

that dates back millions of years,
to our marine origins.

when you hold your breath
for a few seconds,
363
1122236
2491
quando você segura a respiração
por alguns segundos,
18:56
you will reconnect with those origins.
364
1124751

você vai se reconectar com essas origens.
19:00
And I guarantee
365
1128243

é absolutamente mágico.

it's absolute magic.
