ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Simon Berrow - Marine biologist
Simon Berrow is a marine biologist dedicated to studying and preserving the basking shark.

Why you should listen

Born in Ireland, Simon Berrow has travelled the world's oceans studying albatrosses, seals, penguins, sharks, and more. A passionate scientist and lover of Ireland's natural heritage, he founded the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group and the Irish Basking Shark Study Group.

He is also the inventor of "Simon's shark slime sampling system" -- a mop handle and oven cleaner -- which has proved to be the most effective way of collecting shark DNA for analysis.

The TEDxTalk was filmed at the Science Gallery in Dublin.

00:28
They're also harmless plankton-feeding animals.
6
13000
3000
00:31
And they are thought to be able
7

2000
Besohet që janë të aftë të
00:33
to filter a cubic kilometer of water every hour
8

filtrojnë 1 km kub ujë cdo orë
00:36
and can feed on 30 kilos of zoo plankton a day to survive.
9

00:39
They're fantastic creatures.
10
24000
2000
Janë krijesa fantastike.
00:41
And we're very lucky in Ireland, we have plenty of basking sharks
11
26000
3000
00:44
and plenty of opportunities to study them.
12
29000
2000
dhe shume mundësi që ti studiojmë.
00:46
They were also very important to coast communities

00:59
which is about 30 miles west of Achill Island,

01:05
So they were very important, and they were important for the oil out of their liver.
22
50000
3000
01:08
A third of the size of the basking shark is their liver, and it's full of oil.
23
53000
2000
01:10
You get gallons of oil from their liver.
24
55000
2000
01:12
And that oil was used especially for lighting,
25
57000
2000
Ky vaj përdorej posaqërisht për ndricim,
01:14
but also for dressing wounds and other things.

were linked with sunfish oil.
29

ishte falë vajit të këtij lloji të peshqve.
01:22
And "sunfish" is one of the words for basking sharks.
30
67000
2000
01:24
So they were incredibly important animals.
31
69000
2000
Andaj ata kishin rëndësi të jashtëzakonshme.
01:26
They've been around a long time, have been very important to coast communities.
32
71000
3000
01:29
Probably the best documented basking shark fishery in the world
33
74000
3000
01:32
is that from Achill Island.
34
77000
2000
gjindet në Ishullin Achill.
01:34
This is Keem Bay up in Achill Island.
35
79000
2000
Ky është Gjiri Keem në Ishullin Achill.
01:36
And sharks used to come into the bay.
36
81000
3000
Peshkaqenët vinin shpesh tek gjiri.
01:39
And the fishermen would tie a net off the headland,
37
84000
3000
Peshkatarët lidhnin një rrjetë tek kepi,
01:42
string it out along the other net.
38
87000
2000
që lidhej me rrjetat tjera.
01:44
And as the shark came round, it would hit the net, the net would collapse on it.
39
89000
3000
01:47
It would often drown and suffocate.
40
92000
2000
01:49
Or at times, they would row out in their small currachs
41
94000
3000
01:52
and kill it with a lance through the back of the neck.
42
97000
2000
01:54
And then they'd tow the sharks back to Purteen Harbor,
43
99000
3000
01:57
boil them up, use the oil.
44
102000
2000
i valonin dhe u merrnin vajin.
01:59
They used to use the flesh as well for fertilizer
45
104000
3000
Poashtu përdornin mishin si pleh
02:02
and also would fin the sharks.
46
107000
4000
dhe u merrnin pendat.
02:06
This is probably the biggest threat to sharks worldwide --
47
111000
2000
02:08
it is the finning of sharks.
48
113000
2000
është kërcënimi më i madh për peshkaqenët.
02:10
We're often all frightened of sharks thanks to "Jaws."
49
115000
2000
Ne u kemi frikën peshkaqenëve falë filmit "Nofullat."
02:12
Maybe five or six people get killed
50
117000
2000
Peshkaqenët mbysin rreth 5-6 njerëz
02:14
by sharks every year.
51
119000
2000
në vit.
02:16
There was someone recently, wasn't there? Just a couple weeks ago.
52
121000
3000
02:19
We kill about 100 million sharks a year.
53
124000
3000
ne mbysin rreth 100 milion peshkqenë në vit.
02:22
So I don't know what the balance is,
54
127000
2000
02:24
but I think sharks have got more right to be fearful of us than we have of them.
55
129000
3000
02:27
It was a well-documented fishery,
56
132000
2000
Ishte një zonë peshkimi mjaft e dokumentuar,
02:29
and as you can see here, it peaked in the 50s
57
134000
2000
02:31
where they were killing 1,500 sharks a year.
58
136000
2000
kur mbytja e e peshkaqenëve arriti në 1500 në vit.
02:33
And it declined very fast -- a classic boom and bust fishery,
59
138000
3000
02:36
which suggests that a stock has been depleted
60
141000
3000
që sugjeron se depozitat janë shteruar
02:39
or there's low reproductive rates.
61
144000
2000
ose shkalla e riprodhimit është e ulët.
02:41
And they killed about 12,000 sharks in this period,
62
146000
2000
Gjatë kësaj peridudhe ata mbytën rreth 12 000 peshkaqenë
02:43
literally just by stringing a manila rope
63
148000
3000
thejshtë duke përdorur litarë
02:46
off the tip of Keem Bay
64
151000
2000
tek Gjiri Keem
02:48
at Achill Island.
65
153000
2000
në Ishullin Achill.
02:50
Sharks were still killed up into the mid-80s,
66
155000
2000
02:52
especially after places like Dunmore East in County Waterford.
67
157000
3000
posaqërisht në Dunmore East në Qarkun e Waterfordit.
02:55
And about two and a half, 3,000 sharks were killed up till '85,
68
160000
3000
Rreth 2500-3000 peshkaqenë u mbytën deri në vitin 1985,
02:58
many by Norwegian vessels.
69
163000
2000
shumica prej tyre nga anijet Norvegjeze.
03:00
The black, you can't really see this, but these are Norwegian basking shark hunting vessels,
70
165000
3000
03:03
and the black line in the crow's nest
71
168000
2000
03:05
signifies this is a shark vessel
72
170000
2000
03:07
rather than a whaling vessel.
73

03:09
The importance of basking sharks to the coast communities
74
174000
3000
Rëndësia e peshkqenve shtegtarë për komunitetet bregdetare
03:12
is recognized through the language.
75
177000
2000
mund të vërehet nga gjuha e folur.
03:14
Now I don't pretend to have any Irish,
76
179000
2000
Nuk shtirem kinse kam origjinë irlandeze,
03:16
but in Kerry they were often known as "Ainmhide na seolta,"
77
181000
3000
03:19
the monster with the sails.
78
184000
2000
perbindëshi me vela.
03:21
And another title would be "Liop an da lapa,"
79
186000
3000
Një emër tjetër është "Liop an da lapa,"
03:24
the unwieldy beast with two fins.
80
189000
3000
bisha e ngathët me dy penda
03:27
"Liabhan mor," suggesting a big animal.
81
192000
3000
"Liabhan mor" sugjeron që flitet për një kafshë të madhe.
03:30
Or my favorite, "Liabhan chor greine,"
82
195000
2000
Ose e preferuara ime, "Liabhan chor greine,"
03:32
the great fish of the sun.
83
197000
2000
peshku i mrekullueshëm i diellit.
03:34
And that's a lovely, evocative name.
84
199000
2000
Eshtë një emër i këndshëm dhe ndjellës.
03:36
On Tory Island, which is a strange place anyway, they were known as muldoons,
85
201000
3000
03:39
and no one seems to know why.
86
204000
2000
dhe askush nuk e di pse.
03:41
Hope there's no one from Tory here; lovely place.
87
206000
2000
03:43
But more commonly all around the island,
88
208000
3000
03:46
they were known as the sunfish.
89
211000
2000
ishte sunfish (peshk dielli)
03:48
And this represents their habit of basking on the surface when the sun is out.
90
213000
3000
03:51
There's great concern that basking sharks are depleted
91
216000
3000
Eshtë shqetësues fakti që popullata e peshkaqenëve shtegtarë
03:54
all throughout the world.
92
219000
2000
është shteruar në tërë botën.
03:56
Some people say it's not population decline.
93
221000
2000
03:58
It might be a change in the distribution of plankton.
94
223000
2000
04:00
And it's been suggested that basking sharks would make
95
225000
2000
Eshte sugjeruar që peshkaqenet shtegtarë janë tregues
04:02
fantastic indicators of climate change,
96
227000
2000
të shkëlqyer të ndryshimit të klimës,
04:04
because they're basically continuous plankton recorders
97
229000
2000
sepse janë regjistrues të vazhdueshëm të planktonit
04:06
swimming around with their mouth open.
98
231000
2000
që notojnë me gojën hapur.
04:08
They're now listed as vulnerable under the IUCN.
99
233000
3000
04:11
There's also moves in Europe to try and stop catching them.
100
236000
3000
04:14
There's now a ban on catching them and even landing them
101
239000
3000
04:17
and even landing ones that are caught accidentally.
102
242000
2000
edhe të atyre që kapen pa dashur.
04:19
They're not protected in Ireland.
103
244000
2000
Ata nuk janë të mbrojtur në Irlandë.
04:21
In fact, they have no legislative status in Ireland whatsoever,
104
246000
2000
04:23
despite our importance for the species
105
248000
2000
pavaresisht nga rëndësia që ata kanë
04:25
and also the historical context within which basking sharks reside.
106
250000
3000
04:29
We know very little about them.
107
254000
2000
Ne dimë shumë pak për ta.
04:31
And most of what we do know
108
256000
2000
Shumica e asaj cfarë dimë
04:33
is based on their habit of coming to the surface.
109
258000
2000
04:35
And we try to guess what they're doing
110
260000
2000
04:37
from their behavior on the surface.
111
262000
2000
bazuar në sjelljen e tyre në sipërfaqe.
04:39
I only found out last year, at a conference on the Isle of Man,
112
264000
3000
04:42
just how unusual it is to live somewhere
113
267000
3000
04:45
where basking sharks regularly, frequently and predictably
114
270000
3000
ku peshkaqenët shtegtarë dalin në sipërfaqe
04:48
come to the surface to "bask."
115
273000
2000
shumë shpesh dhe rregullisht
04:50
And it's a fantastic opportunity in science
116
275000
2000
Eshtë një rast i shkëlqyer në shkencë
04:52
to see and experience basking sharks,
117
277000
2000
për të parë peshkaqenët shtegtarë,
04:54
and they are awesome creatures.
118
279000
2000
dhe janë krijesa mbresëlënëse.
04:56
And it gives us a fantastic opportunity to actually study them, to get access to them.
119
281000
3000
04:59
So what we've been doing a couple of years -- but last year was a big year --
120
284000
3000
05:02
is we started tagging sharks
121
287000
3000
është etiketimi i peshkaqenëve
05:05
so we could try to get some idea
122
290000
2000
05:07
of sight fidelity and movements and things like that.
123
292000
2000
05:09
So we concentrated mainly
124
294000
2000
Andaj u fokusuam kryesisht në
05:11
in North Donegal and West Kerry
125
296000
2000
Donegalin e Veriut dhe Kerrin Perëndimorë
05:13
as the two areas where I was mainly active.
126
298000
3000
si zona aktive.
05:16
And we tagged them very simply, not very hi-tech,
127
301000
2000
I etiketuam me mjete të thjeshta
05:18
with a big, long pole.
128
303000
2000
05:20
This is a beachcaster rod
129
305000
2000
Kjo është një shtagë peshkimi
05:22
with a tag on the end.
130
307000
2000
që përmbanë një etiketë në majë.
05:24
Go up in your boat and tag the shark.
131
309000
3000
Ne gjuanim peshkaqenët me të nga varka.
05:27
And we were very effective.
132
312000
2000
Dhe ishim shumë efektivë.
05:29
We tagged 105 sharks last summer.
133
314000
2000
Verën e kaluar etiketuam 150 peshkaqenë.
05:31
We got 50 in three days
134
316000
2000
Etiketuam 50 brenda 3 ditësh
05:33
off Inishowen Peninsula.
135
318000
2000
rreth Gadishullit Inishowen.
05:35
Half the challenge is to get access, is to be in the right place at the right time.
136
320000
3000
05:38
But it's a very simple and easy technique.
137
323000
2000
05:40
I'll show you what they look like.
138
325000
2000
Do ju tregoj se si.
05:42
We use a pole camera on the boat
139
327000
2000
Ne përdorim një kamerë në shtagë
05:44
to actually film shark.
140
329000
2000
për të xhiruar peshkaqenët.
05:46
One is to try and work out the gender of the shark.
141
331000
2000
Njëra prej arsyeve është përcaktimi i gjinisë.
05:48
We also deployed a couple of satellite tags, so we did use hi-tech stuff as well.
142
333000
3000
05:51
These are archival tags.
143
336000
2000
Këto janë etiketa arkivore.
05:53
So what they do is they store the data.
144
338000
2000
Andaj ruan të dhënat.
05:55
A satellite tag only works when the air is clear of the water
145
340000
2000
05:57
and can send a signal to the satellite.
146
342000
2000
dhe kështu mund ta dërgojnë signalin tek sateliti.
05:59
And of course, sharks, fish, are underwater most of the time.
147
344000
3000
06:02
So this tag actually works out the locations of shark
148
347000
3000
Kjo etiketë përcakton vendndodhjet e peshkaqenit
06:05
depending on the timing and the setting of the sun,
149
350000
3000
varësisht nga koha dhe pozita e diellit,
06:08
plus water temperature and depth.
150
353000
2000
si dhe temperaturën dhe thellësinë e ujit.
06:10
And you have to kind of reconstruct the path.
151
355000
3000
Eshtë e nevojshme të rindërtosh këtë itinerar.
06:13
What happens is that you set the tag to detach from the shark after a fixed period,
152
358000
3000
06:16
in this case it was eight months,
153
361000
2000
në këtë rast ishte një periudhe 8 mujore,
06:18
and literally to the day the tag popped off, drifted up, said hello to the satellite
154
363000
4000
06:22
and sent, not all the data, but enough data for us to use.
155
367000
3000
06:25
And this is the only way to really work out
156
370000
2000
06:27
the behavior and the movements when they're under water.
157
372000
3000
sjelljen dhe lëvizjet e tyre kur gjenden nënujë.
06:30
And here's a couple of maps that we've done.
158
375000
3000
Këto janë dy harta që ne përpiluam.
06:33
That one, you can see that we tagged both off Kerry.
159
378000
3000
06:36
And basically it spent all its time, the last eight months, in Irish waters.
160
381000
3000
Kaloi tërë kohën, 8 muajt e fundit, në ujërat e Irlandës.
06:39
Christmas day it was out on the shelf edge.
161
384000
2000
Në ditën e Krishtlindjeve doli buzë bregut.
06:41
And here's one that we haven't ground-truthed it yet
162
386000
2000
06:43
with sea surface temperature and water depth,
163
388000
2000
06:45
but again, the second shark kind of spent most of its time
164
390000
2000
06:47
in and around the Irish Sea.
165
392000
2000
në dhe përreth Detit Irlandez.
06:49
Colleagues from the Isle of Man last year
166
394000
2000
Vitin e kaluar, kolegë nga Ishulli i Njeriut,
06:51
actually tagged one shark
167
396000
2000
etiketuan një peshkaqen
06:53
that went from the Isle of Man all the way out to Nova Scotia in about 90 days.
168
398000
3000
06:56
That's nine and a half thousand kilometers. We never thought that happened.
169
401000
3000
Pra notoi 9 500 kilomentra.
06:59
Another colleague in the States
170
404000
2000
Një tjetër koleg në SHBA
07:01
tagged about 20 sharks off Massachusetts, and his tags didn't really work.
171
406000
3000
07:04
All he knows is where he tagged them
172
409000
2000
E tëra që ai di është se ku i etiketoi
07:06
and he knows where they popped off.
173
411000
2000
dhe ku u shkëputën etiketat nga peshkaqenët.
07:08
And his tags popped off in the Caribbean
174
413000
2000
Etiketat u tij shkëputën afër Karaibeve
07:10
and even in Brazil.
175
415000
2000
dhe Brazilit.
07:12
And we thought that basking sharks were temperate animals
176
417000
2000
07:14
and only lived in our latitude.
177
419000
2000
07:16
But in actual fact, they're obviously crossing the Equator as well.
178
421000
3000
Por sic shihet, ata po kalojnë edhe Ekuatorin tani.
07:19
So very simple things like that,
179
424000
2000
Prandaj qëllimi ynë është që të mësojmë
07:21
we're trying to learn about basking sharks.
180
426000
2000
këso gjërash rreth peshkaqenëve shtegtarë.
07:23
One thing that I think
181
428000
3000
Dicka që më duket e cuditshme
07:26
is a very surprising and strange thing
182
431000
2000
dhe e befasishme
07:28
is just how low the genetic diversity of sharks are.
183
433000
3000
07:31
Now I'm not a geneticist, so I'm not going to pretend to understand the genetics.
184
436000
3000
07:34
And that's why it's great to have collaboration.
185
439000
3000
Për këtë është mirë të kesh bashkëpunime.
07:37
Whereas I'm a field person,
186
442000
2000
Meqenëse unë punoj më shumë në terren,
07:39
I get panic attacks if I have to spend too many hours
187
444000
2000
07:41
in a lab with a white coat on -- take me away.
188
446000
3000
07:44
So we can work with geneticists who understand that.
189
449000
3000
07:47
So when they looked at the genetics of basking sharks,
190
452000
2000
Kur hulumtuan gjenetikën e peshkqenëve shtegtarë,
07:49
they found that the diversity was incredibly low.
191
454000
3000
vërejtën se shkalla e shumëllojshmërisë ishte shumë e ulët.
07:52
If you look at the first line really,
192
457000
2000
Nëse shikoni rreshtin e parë këtu,
07:54
you can see that all these different shark species are all quite similar.
193
459000
3000
07:57
I think this means basically that they're all sharks
194
462000
2000
07:59
and they've come from a common ancestry.
195
464000
2000
dhe kanë një paraardhës të përbashkët.
08:01
If you look at nucleotide diversity,
196
466000
3000
Po të shikosh shumëllojshmërinë e nukleotideve,
08:04
which is more genetics that are passed on through parents,
197
469000
3000
material gjenetik i bartur nga prindërit,
08:07
you can see that basking sharks, if you look at the first study,
198
472000
3000
mund ta vëreni që shumëllojshmëria tek
08:10
was an order of magnitude less diversity
199
475000
2000
peshkaqenët shtegtarë ishte më e ulët
08:12
than other shark species.
200
477000
2000
në krahasimet me llojet tjera të peshkaqenëve.
08:14
And you see that this work was done in 2006.
201
479000
2000
Ky studim ishte bërë në vitin 2006.
08:16
Before 2006, we had no idea of the genetic variability of basking sharks.
202
481000
3000
08:19
We had no idea, did they distinguish into different populations?
203
484000
3000
08:22
Were there subpopulations?
204
487000
2000
Apo ndoshta në nënpopullata?
08:24
And of course, that's very important if you want to know
205
489000
2000
08:26
what the population size is and the status of the animals.
206
491000
2000
08:29
So Les Noble in Aberdeen
207
494000
2000
Les Noblesit në Aberdeen
08:31
kind of found this a bit unbelievable really.
208
496000
2000
iu duk e pabesueshme kjo.
08:33
So he did another study
209
498000
3000
Prandaj ndërmorri një tjetë studim
08:36
using microsatellites,
210
501000
3000
duke përdorur mikrosatelitë,
08:39
which are much more expensive, much more time consuming,
211
504000
3000
08:42
and, to his surprise, came up with almost identical results.
212
507000
3000
08:45
So it does seem to be
213
510000
2000
Andaj duket se
08:47
that basking sharks, for some reason, have incredibly low diversity.
214
512000
3000
peshkaqenët shtegtarë kanë shkallë të ulët të shumëllojshmërisë.
08:50
And it's thought maybe it was a bottleneck, a genetic bottleneck
215
515000
2000
08:52
thought to be 12,000 years ago,
216
517000
2000
që daton para 12 000 vitesh,
08:54
and this has caused a very low diversity.
217
519000
3000
08:57
And yet, if you look at whale sharks,
218
522000
2000
Mirëpo, po të shikosh peshkaqenët balenë,
08:59
which is the other plankton eating large shark,
219
524000
3000
09:02
its diversity is much greater.
220
527000
2000
09:04
So it doesn't really make sense at all.
221
529000
2000
Andaj e tërë kjo nuk ka kuptim.
09:06
They found that there was no genetic differentiation
222
531000
2000
Eshtë vërtetuar se nuk ka dallim gjenetik
09:08
between any of the world's oceans of basking sharks.
223
533000
3000
mes peshkaqenëve shtegtarë në oqeane mbarë botës.
09:11
So even though basking sharks are found throughout the world,
224
536000
2000
Edhe pse ata gjinden kudo në botë
09:13
you couldn't tell the difference genetically
225
538000
2000
nuk mund të bësh dallim mes atyre
09:15
from one from the Pacific, the Atlantic, New Zealand, or from Ireland, South Africa.
226
540000
3000
09:18
They all basically seem the same.
227
543000
2000
Të gjithë duken të ngjashëm.
09:20
But again, it's kind of surprising. You wouldn't really expect that.
228
545000
3000
Në të njëjtën kohë është mjaft befasuese. Eshtë dicka e papritur.
09:23
I don't understand this. I don't pretend to understand this.
229
548000
2000
09:25
And I suspect most geneticists don't understand it either,
230
550000
2000
Dyshoj që shumica e gjenetistëve e kuptojnë këtë,
09:27
but they produce the numbers.
231
552000
2000
09:29
So you can actually estimate the population size
232
554000
2000
Në bazë të shumëllojshmërisë gjenetike mund të
09:31
based on the diversity of the genetics.
233
556000
2000
llogarisësh madhësinë e popullatës.
09:33
And Rus Hoelzel came up with an effective population size:
234
558000
3000
09:36
8,200 animals.
235
561000
2000
8,200 kafshë.
09:38
That's it.
236
563000
2000
Kaq.
09:40
8,000 animals in the world.
237
565000
2000
8000 kafshë në botë.
09:42
You're thinking, "That's just ridiculous. No way."
238
567000
2000
09:44
So Les did a finer study
239
569000
2000
Les bëri një studim tjetër
09:46
and he found out it came out about 9,000.
240
571000
2000
09:48
And using different microsatellites gave the different results.
241
573000
3000
Secili mikrosalelit dha rezultate të ndryshme.
09:51
But the average of all these studies came out --
242
576000
3000
Mesatarja e tërë këtyre studimeve doli se ishte
09:54
the mean is about 5,000,
243
579000
2000
rreth 5 000,
09:56
which I personally don't believe,
244
581000
2000
me të cilën unë nuk pajtohem personalisht,
09:58
but then I am a skeptic.
245
583000
2000
por unë jam mjaft skeptike.
10:00
But even if you toss a few numbers around,
246
585000
2000
Por po tu ndërrosh vendet disa numrave,
10:02
you're probably talking of an effective population of about 20,000 animals.
247
587000
3000
atëherë numri i popullatës efektive arrin diku rreth 20 000 kafshë.
10:05
Do you remember how many they killed off Achill there
248
590000
2000
10:07
in the 70s and the 50s?
249
592000
3000
rreth Achillit?
10:10
So what it tells us actually
250
595000
2000
Kjo vërteton atë që
10:12
is that there's actually a risk of extinction of this species
251
597000
3000
ky lloj janë në rrezik të zhduken
10:15
because its population is so small.
252
600000
2000
10:17
In fact, of those 20,000, 8,000 were thought to be females.
253
602000
3000
Nga 20 000 peshkaqenë, besohej se 8000 prej tyre ishin femra.
10:20
There's only 8,000 basking shark females in the world?
254
605000
3000
Ekzistojnë vetëm 8 000 peshkaqenë shtegtarë femra në botë?
10:23
I don't know. I don't believe it.
255
608000
2000
Nuk e di. Nuk e besoj.
10:25
The problem with this
256
610000
2000
Problemi qëndron në
10:27
is they were constrained with samples.
257
612000
2000
numrin e vogël të mostrave.
10:29
They didn't get enough samples
258
614000
2000
Nuk arritën të mbldhnin mostra të mjaftueshme
10:31
to really explore the genetics
259
616000
2000
për të hulumtuar bazën gjenetike
10:33
in enough detail.
260
618000
2000
hollësishëm.
10:35
So where do you get samples from
261
620000
3000
Ku mund të marrësh mostra
10:38
for your genetic analysis?
262
623000
2000
per testime gjenetike?
10:40
Well one obvious source is dead sharks,
263
625000
2000
10:42
Dead sharks washed up.
264
627000
2000
që dalin në breg.
10:44
We might get two or three dead sharks washed up in Ireland a year,
265
629000
3000
10:47
if we're kind of lucky.
266
632000
2000
nëse ke fat.
10:49
Another source would be fisheries bycatch.
267
634000
2000
10:51
We were getting quite a few caught in surface drift nets.
268
636000
3000
Disa prej tyre ishin ngatërruar në rrjetat e peshkimit.
10:54
That's banned now, and that'll be good news for the sharks.
269
639000
3000
10:57
And some are caught in nets, in trawls.
270
642000
2000
Disa ishin ngatërruar në rrjeta fundore.
10:59
This is a shark that was actually landed in Howth just before Christmas,
271
644000
3000
11:02
illegally, because you're not allowed to do that under E.U. law,
272
647000
3000
11:05
and was actually sold for eight euros a kilo as shark steak.
273
650000
3000
11:08
They even put a recipe up on the wall, until they were told this was illegal.
274
653000
3000
11:11
And they actually did get a fine for that.
275
656000
3000
Për këtë ata u gjobitën.
11:14
So if you look at all those studies I showed you,
276
659000
2000
Nga këto studime,
11:16
the total number of samples worldwide
277
661000
3000
del se për momentin janë 86 mostra
11:19
is 86 at present.
278
664000
2000
mbledhur nga tërë bota.
11:21
So it's very important work,
279
666000
2000
Eshtë një punë shumë e rëndiësishme,
11:23
and they can ask some really good questions,
280
668000
2000
që parashtron pyetje interesante
11:25
and they can tell us about population size
281
670000
2000
11:27
and subpopulations and structure,
282
672000
3000
nënpopullatat dhe strukturën,
11:30
but they're constrained by lack of samples.
283
675000
3000
11:33
Now when we were out tagging our sharks,
284
678000
2000
Kur po etiketonim peshkaqenët --
11:35
this is how we tagged them on the front of a RIB -- get in there fast --
285
680000
3000
11:38
occasionally the sharks do react.
286
683000
2000
ndodhte që ata të reagonin.
11:40
And on one occasion when we were up in Malin Head up in Donegal,
287
685000
3000
11:43
a shark smacked the side of the boat with his tail,
288
688000
3000
ku një peshkaqen qëlloi varkën me bishtin e tij,
11:46
more, I think, in startle to the fact that a boat came near it,
289
691000
3000
dhe besoj e bëri këtë sepse u frikësua kur varka iu afrua shumë pranë
11:49
rather than the tag going in.
290
694000
2000
11:51
And that was fine. We got wet. No problem.
291
696000
3000
Cdo gjë përfundoi mire. Ne u lagëm. Kurrfarë problemi.
11:54
And then when myself and Emmett
292
699000
2000
Kur unë dhe Emmett u kthyem tek skela
11:56
got back to Malin Head, to the pier,
293
701000
2000
në Malin head
11:58
I noticed some black slime on the front of the boat.
294
703000
3000
12:01
And I remembered -- I used to spend a lot of time out on commercial fishing boats --
295
706000
2000
Pasi kaloja shumë kohë në anije tregtare peshkimi
12:03
I remember fishermen telling me they can always tell
296
708000
2000
mu kujtuan peshkatarët që thonin se gjithmonë e dinin
12:05
when a basking shark's been caught in the net
297
710000
2000
nëse ndonjë peshkaqen shtegtarë kishte ngecur në rrjetë
12:07
because it leaves this black slime behind.
298
712000
2000
12:09
So I was thinking that must have come from the shark.
299
714000
2000
12:11
Now we had an interest
300
716000
2000
Ishim të interesuar të
12:13
in getting tissue samples for genetics
301
718000
2000
12:15
because we knew they were very valuable.
302
720000
2000
12:17
And we would use conventional methods --
303
722000
2000
Për të bërë këtë përdornim metoda tradicionale
12:19
I have a crossbow, you see the crossbow in my hand there,
304
724000
2000
12:21
which we use to sample whales and dolphins for genetic studies as well.
305
726000
3000
12:24
So I tried that, I tried many techniques.
306
729000
2000
Provova këtë dhe shumë metoda tjera.
12:26
All it was doing was breaking my arrows
307
731000
2000
12:28
because the shark skin is just so strong.
308
733000
2000
pasi lëkura e peshkaqenit është shumë e fortë.,
12:30
There was no way we were going to get a sample from that.
309
735000
2000
12:32
So that wasn't going to work.
310
737000
3000
Kjo nuk do funksiononte.
12:35
So when I saw the black slime on the bow of the boat,
311
740000
3000
Andaj kur pashë zhulin tek kici i anijes,
12:38
I thought, "If you take what you're given in this world ..."
312
743000
3000
12:41
So I scraped it off.
313
746000
2000
E gërryeva dhe mblodha jargen e zeze.
12:43
And I had a little tube with alcohol in it to send to the geneticists.
314
748000
3000
12:46
So I scraped the slime off and I sent it off to Aberdeen.
315
751000
2000
12:48
And I said, "You might try that."
316
753000
2000
Dhe u thashë `Provoni këtë."
12:50
And they sat on it for months actually.
317
755000
2000
12:52
It was only because we had a conference on the Isle of Man.
318
757000
2000
sepse kishim një konferencë në Isle of Man.
12:54
But I kept emailing, saying,
319
759000
2000
Mirëpo unë u dërgova disa emaile dhe i pyeta
12:56
"Have you had a chance to look at my slime yet?"
320
761000
2000
nese kishin pasur rastin ti hidhnin një sy jarges.
12:58
And he was like, "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Later, later, later."
321
763000
2000
Dhe gjithmonë thonin "Më vonë, më vonë , ..."
13:00
Anyway he thought he'd better do it,
322
765000
2000
Më në fund vendosi ta analizonte
13:02
because I never met him before
323
767000
2000
13:04
and he might lose face if he hadn't done the thing I sent him.
324
769000
2000
dhe nuk donte të humbiste respektin.
13:06
And he was amazed that they actually got DNA from the slime.
325
771000
3000
13:09
And they amplified it and they tested it
326
774000
2000
E shumëfishuan dhe e testuan
13:11
and they found, yes, this was actually basking shark DNA,
327
776000
2000
13:13
which was got from the slime.
328
778000
3000
të peshkaqenëve shtegtarë
13:16
And so he was all very excited.
329
781000
2000
Ishte shumë i ngazëllyer.
13:18
It became known as Simon's shark slime.
330
783000
3000
13:21
And I thought, "Hey, you know, I can build on this."
331
786000
3000
13:24
So we thought, okay, we're going to try to get out
332
789000
2000
13:26
and get some slime.
333
791000
2000
jarge.
13:28
So having spent three and a half thousand on satellite tags,
334
793000
4000
Pasi shpenzuam 3500 dollar në etiketa satelitore
13:34
I then thought I'd invest 7.95 -- the price is still on it --
335
799000
3000
u mendova të blija
13:37
in my local hardware store in Kilrush
336
802000
3000
13:40
for a mop handle
337
805000
2000
ne një dyqan pajisjesh
13:42
and even less money on some oven cleaners.
338
807000
3000
dhe pak para në pastues furrash.
13:45
And I wrapped the oven cleaner around the end of the mop handle
339
810000
3000
13:48
and was desperate, desperate
340
813000
2000
dhe mezi prisja
13:50
to have an opportunity
341
815000
3000
të më ofrohej mundësia
13:53
to get some sharks.
342
818000
2000
të kapja disa peshkaqenë.
13:55
Now this was into August now,
343
820000
2000
Ishte muaji i Gushtit
13:57
and normally sharks peak at June, July.
344
822000
2000
13:59
And you rarely see them.
345
824000
2000
Shihen shumë rrallë.
14:01
You can only rarely be in the right place to find sharks into August.
346
826000
3000
14:04
So we were desperate.
347
829000
2000
Ishim të pashpresë.
14:06
So we rushed out to Blasket as soon as we heard there were sharks there
348
831000
3000
Udhëtuam menjëherë drejt Blasket pasi dëgjuam që kishin parë peshkaqenë atje
14:09
and managed to find some sharks.
349
834000
2000
dhe arritëm të gjenim disa.
14:11
So by just rubbing the mop handle down the shark
350
836000
2000
Përderisa peshkaqeni notonte nën varkë ne i fërkonim
14:13
as it swam under the boat --
351
838000
2000
me bisht të shtupës --
14:15
you see, here's a shark that's running under the boat here --
352
840000
2000
sikur në këtë fotografinë këtu --
14:17
we managed to collect slime.
353
842000
2000
dhe kështu arritëm të mblidhnim jargen.
14:19
And here it is.
354
844000
2000
Ja ku është.
14:21
Look at that lovely, black shark slime.
355
846000
3000
Shikojeni jargën e zeze te peshkaqenit.
14:24
And in about half an hour,
356
849000
3000
Për rreth një gjysmë ore
14:27
we got five samples, five individual sharks,
357
852000
3000
mblodhëm 5 mostra nga 5 peshkqenë të ndryshëm,
14:30
were sampled using Simon's shark slime sampling system.
358
855000
3000
14:33
(Laughter)
359
858000
2000
(Qeshje)
14:35
(Applause)
360
860000
5000
(Duartrokitje)
14:40
I've been working on whales and dolphins in Ireland for 20 years now,
361
865000
3000
14:43
and they're kind of a bit more dramatic.
362
868000
2000
dhe kam vërejtur që janë më dramatik.
14:45
You probably saw the humpback whale footage
363
870000
2000
Ndoshta e keni parë videon e balenës me gungë
14:47
that we got there a month or two ago off County Wexford.
364
872000
2000
14:49
And you always think you might have some legacy you can leave the world behind.
365
874000
3000
14:52
And I was thinking of humpback whales breaching
366
877000
2000
14:54
and dolphins.
367
879000
2000
përmes ujit.
14:56
But hey, sometimes these things are sent to you
368
881000
2000
Nganjhëherë këto gjëra të ofrohen të gatshme
14:58
and you just have to take them when they come.
369
883000
2000
15:00
So this is possibly going to be my legacy --
370
885000
2000
Ndoshta kjo do jetë trashëgimia ime --
15:02
Simon's shark slime.
371
887000
2000
Jarga e peshkaqenit të Simonit.
15:04
So we got more money this year
372
889000
2000
15:06
to carry on collecting more and more samples.
373
891000
3000
pë të vazhduar me mbledhjen e mostrave.
15:09
And one thing that is kind of very useful
374
894000
2000
15:11
is that we use a pole cameras -- this is my colleague Joanne with a pole camera --
375
896000
3000
15:14
where you can actually look underneath the shark.
376
899000
2000
15:16
And what you're trying to look at is the males have claspers,
377
901000
3000
15:19
which kind of dangle out behind the back of the shark.
378
904000
3000
15:22
So you can quite easily tell the gender of the shark.
379
907000
2000
15:24
So if we can tell the gender of the shark
380
909000
2000
Kur ke njohurinë mbi gjininë e peshkaqenit
15:26
before we sample it,
381
911000
2000
para se të mblidhen mostrat
15:28
we can tell the geneticist this was taken from a male or a female.
382
913000
3000
15:31
Because at the moment, they actually have no way genetically
383
916000
2000
Më duket e befasishme
15:33
of telling the difference between a male and a female,
384
918000
2000
15:35
which I found absolutely staggering,
385
920000
2000
meshkujve dhe femrave,
15:37
because they don't know what primers to look for.
386
922000
3000

15:42
has got very important

2000
15:55
So as a field biologist,
393
940000
2000
Si biolog terreni,
15:57
you just want to get encounters with these animals.
394
942000
2000
15:59
You want to learn as much as you can.
395
944000
2000
Qëllimi është të mësosh sa më shumë.
16:01
They're often quite brief. They're often very seasonally constrained.
396
946000

16:04
And you just want to learn as much as you can as soon as you can.
397
949000
3000
16:07
But isn't it fantastic
398
952000
2000
Por ia vlen barra qeranë
16:09
that you can then offer these samples
399

who can gain so much more from that.
401
960000
3000
16:18
So as I said,
402
963000
2000
Sic thashë edhe më parë
16:20
these things are sent to you in strange ways. Grab them while you can.
403
965000
3000
16:23
I'll take that as my scientific legacy.
404
968000

Kjo do jetë trashëgimia shkencore.
16:25
Hopefully I might get something a bit more dramatic and romantic before I die.
405
970000
3000
16:28
But for the time being, thank you for that.
406
973000
3000
Për tani, jam falënderues për këtë.
16:31
And keep an eye out for sharks.
407
976000

Mbani sytë hapur për peshkaqenë.
16:33
If you're more interested, we have a basking shark website now just set up.
