Hello, everyone. Because this is my first time at TED,
0
2000
4000
00:21
I've decided to bring along an old friend
1
6000
2000
00:23
to help break the ice a bit.
2
8000
4000
00:27
Yes. That's right. This is Barbie.
3
12000
3000
Po. Ashtu është. Kjo është Barbi.
00:30
She's 50 years old. And she's looking as young as ever.
4
15000
3000
Është 50 vjeçe. Dhe duket më e re se kurrë.
00:33
(Laughter)
5
18000
1000
(Të qeshura)
00:34
But I'd also like to introduce you to
6
19000
2000
Por do doja gjithashtu t'ju prezantoja
00:36
what may be an unfamiliar face.
7
21000
4000
00:40
This is Fulla. Fulla is the Arab world's answer to Barbie.
8
25000
5000
00:45
Now, according to proponents of the clash of civilizations,
9
30000
3000
Tani, sipas përkrahësve të konfliktit të qytetërimeve,
00:48
Barbie and Fulla occupy these completely separate spheres.
10
33000
4000
00:52
They have different interests. They have divergent values.
11
37000
3000
Ato kanë interesa të ndryshme. Kanë vlera divergjente.
00:55
And should they ever come in contact ...
12
40000
3000
Dhe nëse takohen ndonjëherë...
00:58
well, I've got to tell you, it's just not going to be pretty.
13
43000
3000
epo, më duhet t'ju them, s'do të jetë një gjë e bukur.
01:01
My experience, however, in the Islamic world is very different.
14
46000
4000
01:05
Where I work, in the Arab region,
15
50000
2000
Aty ku punoj, në vendin arab,
01:07
people are busy taking up Western innovations
16
52000
2000
01:09
and changing them into things
17
54000
2000
dhe duke i ndryshuar në gjëra
01:11
which are neither conventionally Western,
18
56000
2000
të cilat nuk janë as tradicionalisht perëndimore,
01:13
nor are they traditionally Islamic.
19
58000
2000
dhe as tradicionalisht islame.
01:15
I want to show you two examples.
20
60000
2000
Dua t'ju paraqes dy shembuj.
01:17

02:53
In the world of 4Shbab, it's not about bump and grind.
47
158000
3000
02:56
But it's not about fire and brimstone either.
48
161000
3000
02:59
Its videos are intended to show

164000
2000
Videot e saj kanë qëllim të tregojnë
03:01
a kinder, gentler face of Islam,
50
166000

03:04
for young people to deal with life's challenges.
51
169000
3000
03:07
Now, my second example is for a slightly younger crowd.
52
172000
3000
03:10
And it's called "The 99."
53
175000
3000
Dhe quhet "99"-a.
03:13
Now, these are the world's first Islamic superheroes.
54
178000
3000
03:16
They were created by a Kuwaiti psychologist
55
181000
2000
03:18
called Naif Al Mutawa.
56
183000
2000
i quajtur Naif Al Mutawa.
03:20
And his desire is to rescue Islam
57
185000
2000
03:22
from images of intolerance,
58
187000
2000
nga imazhet e intolerancës,
03:24
all in a child-friendly format.
59
189000
4000
03:28
"The 99." The characters are meant to embody
60
193000
2000
"99"-a. Personazhet duhet të mishërojnë
03:30
the 99 attributes of Allah:
61
195000
3000
99 tiparet e Allahut:
03:33
justice, wisdom, mercy, among others.
62
198000
3000
përveç të tjerave, drejtësi, mençuri, mëshirë.
03:36
So, for example, there is the character of Noora.
63
201000
4000
Kështu, përshembull, kemi personazhin e Noorës.
03:40
She is meant to have the power
64
205000
2000
Ajo ka fuqinë
03:42
to look inside people
65
207000
2000
për të parë në brendësi të njerëzve
03:44
and see the good and bad in everyone.
66
209000
3000
03:47
Another character called Jami
67
212000
2000
Një personazh tjetër i quajtur Jami
03:49
has the ability to create fantastic inventions.
68
214000
4000
ka aftësinë për të krijuar shpikje fantastike.
03:53
Now, "The 99" is not just a comic book.
69
218000
2000
03:55
It's now a theme park.
70
220000
2000
Tani është një park.
03:57
There is an animated series in the works.
71
222000
2000
Ka seri të animuara në punë.
03:59
And by this time next year,
72
224000
2000
Dhe si sot një vit,
04:01
the likes of Superman and Wonder Woman
73
226000
2000
pëlqimet për Supermenin dhe Gruan e Mrekullive
04:03
will have joined forces with "The 99"
74
228000
2000
do t'i bashkohen forcave me "99"-ën
04:05
to beat injustice wherever they find it.
75
230000
6000
04:11
"The 99" and 4Shbab are just two of many examples
76
236000
3000
"99"-a dhe 4Shbab janë thjeshtë dy nga shumë shembujt
04:14
of this sort of Islamic cross-cultural hybridization.
77
239000
4000
të këtij lloj hibridizimi të kapërcimit të kulturës islamike.
04:18
We're not talking here about a clash of civilizations.
78
243000
3000
Nuk po flasim për një përplasje civilizimi.
04:21
Nor is it some sort of indistinguishable mash.
79
246000
3000
04:24
I like to think of it as a mesh of civilizations,
80
249000
3000
04:27
in which the strands of different cultures are intertwined.
81
252000
4000
04:31
Now, while 4Shbab and "The 99" may look new and shiny,
82
256000
3000
04:34
there is actually a very long tradition of this.
83
259000
3000
ekziston një traditë e gjatë për këtë.
04:37
Throughout its history, Islam has borrowed and adapted from other civilizations
84
262000
5000
04:42
both ancient and modern.
85
267000
2000
si antike dhe moderne.
04:44
After all, it's the Quran which encourages us to do this:
86
269000
3000
04:49
"We made you into nations and tribes
87
274000
2000
"Ju krijuam nga kombet dhe fiset
04:51
so that you could learn from one another."
88
276000
2000
që të mësoni nga njëri-tjetri."
04:53
And to my mind, those are pretty wise words,
89
278000
3000
04:56
no matter what your creed. Thank you.
90
281000
3000
pavarësisht besimit tuaj. Ju faleminderit.
