ABOUT THE SPEAKER
David Lang - Maker
David Lang is a maker and the co-founder of OpenROV, a community of ocean lovers who build underwater robots.

Why you should listen

David Lang is a maker whose craving for adventure turned him into an amateur ocean explorer. A few years ago Lang and NASA engineer Eric Stackpole went looking for lost gold (literally) in an underwater cave in the foothills of the Sierra Navada. But they weren't quite sure how to go about it. Without much expertise (or money), the two put initial designs for an underwater robot explorer online. Soon OpenROV was born: a community of citizen ocean explorers who build and constantly improve upon these small remote operated underwater robots.

Lang is also the author of Zero to Maker and a 2013 TED Fellow. He lives on a sailboat in the San Francisco Bay.

Sizə hər şeyin necə başlaması barədə qısa bir hekayə danışmaq istərdim.
01:35
So a few years ago, my friend Eric and I
32
83636
2271
Bir neçə il əvvəl mən və dostum Erik
01:37
decided we wanted to explore this underwater cave
33

Sierranın ətəklərində bu sualtı mağaranı
01:40
in the foothills of the Sierras.
34
88107
1858
tədqiq etməyi qərara aldıq.
01:41
We had heard this story about lost gold
35
89965
1903
Biz "Qızıla Hücum" dönəmində olmuş
01:43
from a Gold Rush-era robbery,
and we wanted to go up there.
36
91868
2518
soyğunda itən qızıl haqda eşitmişdik və ora getmək istəyirdik.
01:46
Unfortunately, we didn't have any money
37
94386
1658
Bədbəxtlikdən, bizim bunu emək üçün
01:48
and we didn't have any tools to do it.
38
96044
1823
nə pulumuz, nə də lazımi təchizatımız var idi.
01:49
So Eric had an initial design idea for a robot,
39
97867
3200
Erikin robotun necə hazırlamaq barədə ilkin ideyası var idi,
01:53
but we didn't have all the parts figured out,
40
101067
2773
amma biz bütün hissələri fikirləşməmişdik.
01:55
so we did what anybody would do in our situation:
41
103840
2212
Beləliklə biz, hər kəsin belə vəziyyətdə atacağı addımı atdıq:
01:58
we asked the Internet for help.
42
106052
2038
Biz internetden kömək istədik.
02:00
More specifically, we created this website,
43
108090
2532
Daha dəqiq desəm, biz openROV.com adlı sayt yaratdıq,
02:02
openROV.com, and shared
our intentions and our plans
44
110622
2895
və məqsəd və planlarımızı orada paylaşdıq.
02:05
For the first few months, it was just Eric and I
45
113517
2390
İlk aylar sadəcə Erik və mən
02:07
talking back to each other on the forums,
46
115907
2530
forumlarda bir-birimizlə danışırdıq,
02:10
but pretty soon, we started to get feedback
47
118437
2088
lakin bir müddət sonra istehsalçı və hobbiçilərdən,
02:12
from makers and hobbyists,
48
120525
1843
daha sonra isə bizə nə etməli olduğumuz barədə təkliflər verən
02:14
and then actually professional ocean engineers
49
122368
1994
professional okean mühəndislərindən
02:16
who had some suggestions for what we should do.
50
124362
3532
rəylər almağa başladıq.
02:19
We kept working on it. We learned a lot.
51
127894
1764
Biz bunun üstündə işləməyə davam etdik ve çox şey öyrəndik.
02:21
We kept prototyping, and eventually,
52
129658
2025
Biz model hazırlamağa davam etdik və sonda
02:23
we decided we wanted to go
to the cave. We were ready.
53
131683
2719
qərara aldıq ki, mağaraya getməliyik. Biz hazır idik.
02:26
So about that time, our little expedition
became quite a story,
54
134402
3440
Bu zaman ərzində bizim kiçik tədqiqatımız böyük bir hekayəyə çevrilmiş
02:29
and it got picked up in The New York Times.
55
137842
2021
və hətta "The New York Times"-da belə çap olunmuşdu.
02:31
And we were pretty much just overwhelmed
56
139863
1812
Biz insanlara öz MİNV-lərini
02:33
with interest from people who wanted a kit
57
141675
1783
özləri düzəltmək imkanı verən bir alətlər dəsti
02:35
that they could build this open ROV themselves.
58
143458
2521
istəyənlərinin marağı ilə əhatə olunmuşduq.
02:37
So we decided to put the project on Kickstarter,
59
145979
3289
Və beləliklə biz qərara aldıq ki, layihəni Kickstarter-ə
02:41
and when we did,
60
149268
1232
yerləşdirək və bunu edəndə
02:42
we raised our funding goal in about two hours,
61
150500
2075
biz təxminən 2 saat ərzində maliyyə hədəfimizə nail olaraq,
02:44
and all of a sudden,
had this money to make these kits.
62
152575
3205
qəflətən bütün alətləri hazırlamaq üçün kifayət qədər pul topladıq.
02:47
But then we had to learn how to make them.
63
155780
2195
İndi isə, biz bunu necə düzəldəcəyimizi öyrənməli idik.
02:49
I mean, we had to learn small batch manufacturing.
64
157975
2165
Mən bizim kiçik hissələrin hazırlanmasını öyrənməyimizi nəzərdə tutram.
02:52
So we quickly learned that our garage
65
160140
3260
Biz tezliklə başa düşdük ki, qarajımız
02:55
was not big enough to hold our growing operation.
66
163400
2679
böyüyən əməliyyatın yerləşməsi üçün kifayət deyil.
02:58
But we were able to do it, we got all the kits made,
67
166079
2156
Lakin biz bütün alətləri hazırlamağı bacardıq --
03:00
thanks a lot to TechShop,
which was a big help to us,
68
168235
2707
bizə böyük kömək olan TechShop-un sayəsində --
03:02
and we shipped these kits all over the world
69
170942
2985
və biz bu təchizatı keçən Miladdan bir müddət öncə
03:05
just before Christmas of last year,
70
173927
1829
bütün dünyaya yolladıq,
03:07
so it was just a few months ago.
71
175756
1782
beləcə, bu, sadəcə bir neçə ay əvvəl oldu.
03:09
But we're already starting to get video
72
177538
1908
Amma biz artıq dünyanın hər yerindən göndərilən
03:11
and photos back from all over the world,
73
179446
1598
videoları və şəkilləri qəbul etməyə başlamışıq,
03:13
including this shot from under the ice in Antarctica.
74
181044
3030
o cümlədən Antarktidada buzun altında çəkilmiş bu videonu.
03:16
We've also learned the penguins love robots.
75
184074
3400
Biz həm də pinqvinlərin robotları sevdiyini öyrəndik.
03:19
(Laughter)
76
187474
2013
(Gülüş)
03:21
So we're still publishing all the designs online,
77
189487
3168
Biz hələ də bütün modelləri onlayn olaraq dərc edir
03:24
encouraging anyone to build these themselves.
78
192655
2118
və hər kəsi bunları özləri hazırlamağa ruhlandırırıq.
03:26
That's the only way that we could have done this.
79
194773
2403
Biz bütün bunlara sadəcə bu şəkildə nail ola bilərdik.
03:29
By being open source, we've created
80
197176
1659
Bir açıq mənbə olaraq biz
03:30
this distributed R&D network,
81
198835

03:33

və indi könüllü təşəbbüslərlə dəstəklənən istənilən həmkarımızdan daha sürətlə irəliləyirik.

But the actual robot is really only half the story.
