Marco Tempest is a cyber illusionist, combining magic and technology to produce astonishing illusions.

Why you should listen

The Swiss magician began his performing career as a stage magician and manipulator, winning awards and establishing an international reputation. His interest in computer-generated imageryled him to incorporate video and digital technology in his work — and eventually to the development of a new form of contemporary illusion. The expansion of the Internet and social media provided more opportunities for digital illusions and ways of interacting with audiences and creating magically augmented realities. Tempest is a keen advocate of the open source community, working with artists, writers and technologists to create new experiences and research the practical uses of the technology of illusion. He is a Director’s Fellow at the MIT Media Lab.

Marco Tempest: A cyber-magic card trick like no other

Filmed:

The suits, numbers and colors in a deck of cards correspond to the seasons, moon cycles and calendar. Marco Tempest straps on augmented reality goggles and does a card trick like you've never seen before, weaving a lyrical tale as he deals. (This version fixes a glitch in the original performance, but is otherwise exactly as seen live by the TEDGlobal audience, including the dazzling augmented reality effects.)

As a cyber-magician, I combine elements of illusion

You've probably all heard of Google's Project Glass.

00:39
It's new technology. You look through them
8
24000
2027
00:41
and the world you see is augmented with data:
9
26027
2973
00:44
names of places, monuments, buildings,
10
29000
3057
00:47
maybe one day even the names of the strangers that pass you on the street.

into the mind of the cyber-illusionist.

Let me show you what I mean.

01:08
All we need is a playing card. Any card will do.
17
53083
4981
01:13
Like this. And let me mark it so we can recognize it
18

01:17
when we see it again.
19
62074
4988
01:22
All right. Very significant mark.
20
67062
3950
01:26
And let's put it back into the deck,
21

01:28
somewhere in the middle, and let's get started.

Marco Tempest: For those of you who don't play cards,
25
82013
2029
01:39
a deck of cards is made up of four different suits:
26
84042
3969
01:43
hearts, clubs,
27
88011
3001
01:46
diamonds and spades.
28
91012
3021
01:49
The cards are amongst the oldest of symbols,
29
94033
2990
01:52
and have been interpreted in many different ways.
30
97023
5004
01:57
Now, some say that the four suits
31
102027
3988
02:01
represent the four seasons.
32
106015
4002
02:05
There's spring, summer,
33
110017
3070
02:08
autumn and —

02:11
Voice: My favorite season is winter.MT: Well yeah, mine too.
35

02:14
Winter is like magic. It's a time of change,
36
119008
3017
02:17
when warmth turns to cold, water turns to snow,
37
122025
3071
02:20
and then it all disappears.
38
125096
3974
02:24
There are 13 cards in each suit. (Music)

129070
6023
02:30

40
135093
3957
02:34
MT: So over here is low tide,
41
139050
2958
02:37
and over here is high tide,
42
142008
2070
02:39
and in the middle is the moon.
43
144078
2988
02:42

44
147066
3960
02:46
MT: There are two colors in a deck of cards.
45
151026
4065
02:50
There is the color red
46
155091
2991
02:53

47
158082
4937
02:58
representing the constant change

from day to night.

50
169018
2041
03:06
MT: And is it a coincidence that there are 52 cards
51
171059
4037
03:10
in a deck of cards, just as there are 52 weeks in a year?
52
175096

03:19

03:21
the result is 365.
55
186071
2934
03:24
MT: Oh, 365, the number of days in a year,
56
189005
3044
03:27
the number of days between
57

each birthday.

2044
03:38
MT: Well, as a matter of fact, it was on my sixth birthday
61
203084
2959
03:41
that I received my first deck of cards,
62
206043
3044
03:44
and ever since that day, I have traveled around the world
63
209087
4940
03:49
performing magic for boys and girls,
64
214027
3056
03:52
men and women, husbands and wives,

even kings and queens. (Applause)

I'm performing for you.
74
248074
3020
04:26
Voice: Signed card detected.MT: Well, sometimes people ask me
75
251094
2998
04:29
how do you become a magician? Is it a 9-to-5 job?
76
254092
4929
04:34
Of course not! You've got to practice 24/7.
77
259021
3006
04:37
I don't literally mean 24 hours, seven days a week.
78
262027
4046
04:41
24/7 is a little bit of an exaggeration,
79
266073
3940
04:45
but it does take practice. Now, some people will say,
80
270013
3052
04:48
well, magic, that must be the work of some evil
81
273065

supernatural force. (Laughter) (Applause)

Whoa.

05:04
Well, to this, I just say, no no.
85
289015
3986
05:08
Actually, in German, it's nein nein. (Laughter)
86
293001
2089
05:10
Magic isn't that intense. I have to warn you, though,
87
295090
3951
05:14
if you ever play with someone who deals cards like this,
