ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Emmanuel Jal - Hip-hop artist
Emmanuel Jal's hypnotic voice rises from hellish origins as a beacon of hope for those caught in seemingly endless cycles of war and despair.

Why you should listen

Hip-hop star Emmanuel Jal first exploded into dance halls with Gua in 2005. His music has energized music lovers of all ethnicities and nations. But Jal's life story is far darker. Swept up into the Sudanese rebel army at age seven, he finally escaped with 400 fellow soldiers, 16 of whom survived, the rest succumbing to starvation, ambush and animal attacks. Rather than resort to cannibalism, Jal ate snails and vultures until he arrived at a refugee camp, where he was adopted by aid worker Emma McCune and later sent to England.

Jal found an outlet for his turbulent life story in music. His lyrics tell moving and disturbing stories, but wrap them into hope and love. He is active in charity work across Africa, fighting against poverty and child warfare. War Child, his biography, was released in early 2009 along with a documentary film.

What energizedénergisé me and keptconservé me going is the musicla musique I do.
140
440000
4000
Ce qui me fait avancer, c'est ma musique.
07:36
I never saw anybodyn'importe qui
141
444000

Je n'ai jamais rencontré personne
07:39

so they could adviseconseiller me or do therapythérapie.
143
449000

quelqu'un qui me suit en thérapie.
07:43
So the musicla musique had been my therapythérapie for me.
144
451000
4000
La musique est ma thérapie.
07:47
It's been where I actuallyréellement see heavenparadis,

je peux être un enfant à nouveau, danser et jouer.
07:57
So one thing I know about musicla musique:
148
465000
2000
La musique m'a appris une chose.
07:59
musicla musique is the only thing that has powerPuissance

Le pouvoir de la musique,
08:27
I normallynormalement comparecomparer to the powerPuissance love
160

je le compare souvent au pouvoir de l'amour.
08:30
when love doesn't see a colorCouleur.
161
498000

Car l'amour ne voit pas la différence.
08:32
You know, if you falltomber in love with a froggrenouille, that's it.

08:34
One testimonytémoignage about how I find musicla musique
163
502000
2000
Au sujet du pouvoir de la musique,
08:36
is powerfulpuissant is when
164
504000
3000
je me souviens d'une anecdote.
08:39
I was still a soldiersoldat back then.
165
507000
3000
J'étais encore un soldat,
08:42
I hateddétesté the people in the northNord.
166
510000
3000
et je détestais les gens du nord.
08:45
But I don't know why I don't hatehaine theirleur musicla musique.
167
513000
4000
Mais je ne détestais pas leur musique.
08:49
So we partyfête and danceDanse to theirleur musicla musique.
168
517000
3000
On faisait la fête au son de leur musique.
08:52
And one thing that shockedchoqué me is one day
169
520000
2000
Mais un jour, une chose m'a choquée.
08:54
they broughtapporté an ArabArabes musicianmusicien

Un musicien arabe
08:57

08:59
And I almostpresque brokecassé my legjambe dancingdansant to his musicla musique.
172
527000
3000
et je me suis presque cassé la jambe en dansant.
09:02
But I had this questionquestion.
173
530000
2000
Alors, je me suis demandé pourquoi.
09:04
So now I'm doing musicla musique so I know what the powerPuissance of musicla musique is.
174
532000
4000
Maintenant que je fais de la musique, je sais pourquoi.
09:08
So what's happeningévénement here?
175
536000
2000
alors maintenant, quoi ?
09:10
I've been in a painfuldouloureux journeypériple.
176
538000
3000
J'ai vécu des choses difficiles.
09:13

09:18
I don't eatmanger breakfastdéjeuner. No lunchle déjeuner.
179
546000
3000
Pas de petit déjeuner ou de déjeuner.
09:21
And I've doneterminé a campaigncampagne calledappelé
180
549000
2000
Je mène une campagne qui s'appelle :
09:23
LosePerdre to WinWin.
181
551000
2000
Perdre pour gagner,
09:25
Where I'm losingperdant so that I could wingagner

Où je perds pour pouvoir gagner
09:27
the battlebataille that I'm fightingcombat now.
183
555000
2000
mon combat d'aujourd'hui.
09:29
So my breakfastdéjeuner, my lunchle déjeuner,
184
557000
4000
Mon petit déjeuner, mon déjeuner,
09:33
I donatefaire un don it to a charitycharité that I foundedfondé
185
561000
2000
je les offre à une organisation que j'ai fondée
09:35
because we want to buildconstruire a schoolécole in SudanSoudan.
186
563000
3000
parce qu'on veut construire une école au Soudan.
09:38
And I'm doing this because alsoaussi
187
566000
3000
Je le fais aussi parce que
09:41
it's a normalnormal thing in my home, people eatmanger one mealrepas a day.
188
569000
4000
chez moi, c'est normal, on ne mange qu'un repas par jour.
09:45
Here I am in the WestOuest. I choosechoisir not to.
189
573000
3000
Ici, en occident, je peux choisir.
09:48
So in my villagevillage now, kidsdes gamins there,
190
576000
2000
Alors actuellement, dans mon village,
09:50
they normallynormalement listen to BBCBBC, or any radioradio,
191
578000
3000
les enfants écoutent souvent la BBC ou autre,
09:53
and they are waitingattendre to know,
192
581000
2000
et ils attendent de savoir,
09:55
the day EmmanuelEmmanuel will eatmanger his breakfastdéjeuner
193
583000
2000
quand Emmanuel va manger son petit déjeuner.
09:57
it meansveux dire he got the moneyargent to buildconstruire our schoolécole.
194
585000
2000
Cela voudra dire qu'il a l'argent pour construire l'école.
09:59
And so I madefabriqué a commitmentengagement. I say,
195
587000
2000
J'ai donc pris cet engagement, et j'ai dit :
10:01
"I'm gonna not eatmanger my breakfastdéjeuner."
196
589000
3000
"je ne vais pas manger mon petit déjeuner".
10:04
I thought I was famouscélèbre enoughassez that I would raiseélever the moneyargent withindans one monthmois,
197
592000
3000
Je pensais être assez célèbre pour trouver l'argent en un mois
10:07
but I've been humbledhumilié.
198
595000
2000
Mais bon...j'ai trop rêvé
10:09
(LaughterRires)
199
597000
3000
(rires)
10:12
So it's takenpris me 232 daysjournées.
200
600000
2000
Alors ça m'a pris 232 jours.
10:14
And I said, "No stop untiljusqu'à we get it."
201
602000
3000
Et j'ai dit : "j'arrête pas avant".
10:17
And like it's been doneterminé on FacebookFacebook, MySpaceMySpace.

Maintenant, l'info est sur Facebook, MySpace.
10:20

615000
2000
quelqu'un a donné 20 centimes en ligne.
10:29
(LaughterRires)
207

(rires)
10:30
But that moveddéplacé me.
208
618000
2000
Ça m'a touché.
10:32
And so, the importanceimportance of educationéducation to me
209
620000
7000
Pour moi, l'éducation c'est important.
10:39
is what I'm willingprêt to diemourir for.

2000
Je suis prêt à mourir pour ça.
10:41
I'm willingprêt to diemourir for this,

629000
2000
Vraiment.
10:43

3000
Je sais ce que ça peut faire à mon peuple.
