ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ronny Edry - Graphic Designer
Ronny Edry of Israel created The Peace Factory, an online movement for peace in the Middle East, when he posted a Facebook image that declared "Iranians, we will never bomb your country."

Why you should listen

Ronny Edry is a graphic designer, teacher and father. While he often posted images on Facebook without much fanfare, in March of 2012 one of his images garnered international attention. The image showed him with his daughter, along with the words “Iranians, we will never bomb your country. We heart you.” The image became a catalyst for dialogue between the people of two nations on the brink of war -- and started an online movement. Today, The Peace Factory is connecting people throughout the Middle East, giving them a voice and a face.

Edry grew up in Paris, France, and has lived in Israel since 1989. Along with his work on the Peace Factory, he is the owner and founder of Pushpin, a school for art and design in Tel Aviv. He himself graduated with honors from the BezIalel Academy of Art and Design, and he is a staff member teaching visual communication in design academies in Israel. He has received awards for his works as a graphic designer and is also an illustrator and author of graphic novels.

Ronny Edry: Israel and Iran: A love story?

Israele e Iran: Una storia d'amore?

Because you have to understandcapire,

Perché dovete capire,
02:15
in IsraelIsraele we don't talk with people from IranIran.
42

02:29
And now people from IranIran are talkingparlando to me.
46
133337
2737
E ora persone dell'Iran stanno parlando con me.
02:31
So I startinizio answeringsegreteria this girlragazza, and she's tellingraccontare me
47
136074
3509
02:35
she saw the postermanifesto and she askedchiesto her familyfamiglia to come,
48
139583

02:40
because they don't have a computercomputer, she askedchiesto her familyfamiglia
49
144443
1616
02:41
to come to see the postermanifesto, and they're all sittingseduta in the livingvita roomcamera cryingpiangere.
50
146059
4548
02:46
So I'm like, whoawhoa.
51
150607
1682
E io dico, wow.
02:48
I askChiedere my wifemoglie to come, and I tell her, you have to see that.
52
152289
3418
02:51
People are cryingpiangere, and she cameè venuto, she readleggere the texttesto,
53
155707
3049
02:54
and she startediniziato to crypiangere.
54
158756
2700
e ha iniziato a piangere.
02:57
And everybody'sognuno è cryingpiangere now. (LaughterRisate)
55
161456
2638
E ora tutti piangono.
(Risate)
02:59
So I don't know what to do, so my first reflexriflesso,
56
164094
2800
Non so cosa fare, quindi la mia prima reazione
03:02
as a graphicgrafica designerprogettista, is, you know, to showmostrare everybodytutti
57
166894
3314
in quanto graphic designer è mostrare a tutti
03:06
what I'd just seenvisto, and people startediniziato to see them
58
170208
3698
quello che avevo appena visto,
e la gente ha cominciato a vederli
03:09
and to shareCondividere them, and that's how it startediniziato.
59
173906
2600
e a condividerli,
e così è cominciato tutto.
03:12
The day after, when really it becamedivenne a lot of talkingparlando,
60
176506
3739
03:16
I said to myselfme stessa, and my wifemoglie said to me,
61
180245
2223
mi sono detto,
e mia moglie mi ha detto,
03:18
I alsoanche want a postermanifesto,
62
182468
1266
anch'io voglio un manifesto,
03:19
so this is her. (LaughterRisate)
63
183734
3462
quindi questa è lei.
(Risate)
03:23
Because it's workinglavoro, put me in a postermanifesto now.
64
187196
4982
03:28
But more seriouslysul serio, I was like, okay, these onesquelli work,
65
192178
3110
Ma seriamente, mi sono detto,
ok, questi funzionano,
03:31
but it's not just about me, it's about people from IsraelIsraele
66
195288
3298
03:34
who want to say something.
67
198586
903
che vuole dire qualcosa.
03:35
So I'm going to shootsparare all the people I know, if they want,
68
199489
2837
03:38
and I'm going to put them in a postermanifesto and I'm going to shareCondividere them.
69
202326
2088
03:40
So I wentandato to my neighborsvicini di casa and friendsamici and studentsstudenti
70
204414
3682
Quindi sono andato dai miei vicini, amici e studenti
03:43
and I just askedchiesto them, give me a pictureimmagine, I will make you a postermanifesto.
71
208096
4091
03:48
And that's how it startediniziato. And that's how, really,
72
212187
2897
Ecco come è iniziato.
Ed è così che
03:50
it's unleashedscatenato, because suddenlyad un tratto people
73
215084
3413
si è scatenato, perché improvvisamente le persone
03:54
from FacebookFacebook, friendsamici and othersaltri,
74
218497
2450
su Facebook, amici e altri,
03:56
just understandcapire that they can be partparte of it.
75
220947
2957
capiscono che possono farne parte.
03:59
It's not just one dudeDude makingfabbricazione one postermanifesto,
76
223904
1734
04:01
it's -- we can be partparte of it, so they startinizio sendinginvio me picturesimmagini
77
225638
3513
possiamo farne parte, quindi hanno iniziato a mandarmi foto
04:05
and askChiedere me, "Make me a postermanifesto. PostInserisci it.
78
229151
2376
chiedendo, "Fammi un manifesto. Pubblicalo.
04:07
Tell the IraniansIraniani we from IsraelIsraele love you too."
79
231527
4634
04:12
It becamedivenne, you know, at some pointpunto it was really, really intenseintenso.
80
236161
3368
04:15
I mean, so manymolti picturesimmagini, so I askedchiesto friendsamici
81
239529
4315
Voglio dire, così tante immagini, così ho chiesto ad amici
04:19
to come, graphicgrafica designersprogettisti mostmaggior parte of them,
82
243844
3123
di venire, la maggior parte graphic designer,
04:22
to make postersmanifesti with me, because I didn't have the time.
83
246967
2603
04:25
It was a hugeenorme amountquantità of picturesimmagini.
84
249570
2656
Era una gran quantità di immagini.
04:28
So for a fewpochi daysgiorni, that's how my livingvita roomcamera was.
85
252226
3395
04:31
And we receivedricevuto IsraeliIsraeliano postersmanifesti, IsraeliIsraeliano imagesimmagini,
86
255621
4523
Abbiamo ricevuto manifesti israeliani, immagini israeliane,
04:36
but alsoanche lots of commentsCommenti, lots of messagesmessaggi from IranIran.
87
260144
4686
04:40
And we tookha preso these messagesmessaggi and we madefatto postersmanifesti out of it,
88
264830
3682
E abbiamo preso questi messaggi e ne abbiamo fatto dei manifesti,
04:44
because I know people: They don't readleggere, they see imagesimmagini.
89
268512
3465
perché conosco le persone:
Non leggono, vedono immagini.
04:47
If it's an imageImmagine, they maypuò readleggere it.
90
271977
2976
Se è un'immagine, magari la leggono.
04:50
So here are a fewpochi of them.
91
274953
2717
Eccone qualcuna.
04:53
("You are my first IsraelianIsraeliana friendamico. I wishdesiderio we bothentrambi get ridliberare of our idiotidiota politicianspolitici, anywaycomunque nicesimpatico to see you!")
92

04:55
("I love that blueblu. I love that starstella. I love that flagbandiera.") This one is really movingin movimento for me because it's the storystoria
93
279943
3536
04:59
of a girlragazza who has been raisedsollevato in IranIran
94
283479

entrando a scuola ogni giorno,
05:08
and now that she seesvede the postersmanifesti that we're sendinginvio,
96

e ora che vede i manifesti che mandiamo,
05:11
she startsinizia -- she said that she changedcambiato her mindmente,
97

2675
ha detto che ha cambiato idea,
05:14
and now she lovesama that blueblu, she lovesama that starstella,

e ora adora quel blu, adora quella stella,
05:17
and she lovesama that flagbandiera, talkingparlando about the IsraeliIsraeliano flagbandiera,
99
301918
2335

05:37
CrazyPazzo, crazypazzo.
105

05:40
So you can see they are still shytimido, they don't want to showmostrare theirloro facesfacce,

Vedete che sono ancora timidi,

Ora si tratta di comunicazione.
05:50
It's a two-waya due vie storystoria. It's IsraelisIsraeliani and IraniansIraniani

3426
È una storia reciproca.
Sono gli Israeliani e gli Iraniani
05:53

111
338017
2656

13:40
Maybe as people, because especiallyparticolarmente in IsraelIsraele,
