ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jimmy Carter - Peace activist
The president of the United States from 1977 to 1981, Jimmy Carter has used his post-presidency years to work for peace, teach, write and engage in global activism.

Why you should listen

While in office, Jimmy Carter brokered historic peace deals and treaties. Since the 1980s, he has worked tirelessly for conflict resolution around the globe through The Carter Center, where he has engaged in mediation in Ethiopia, Eritrea, North Korea, Liberia, Haiti, Bosnia, Venezuela, Nepal and the Middle East, among many other countries and regions. Under his leadership, The Carter Center has sent 96 election observation missions to the Americas, Africa and Asia. They're also leading the fight against Guinea worm, on track to be the second human disease in history to be eradicated.

In 2002, Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize "for his decades of untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development." He's a member of the Elders, a group of independent global leaders working for peace and human rights.

22
74657
5233
01:31
First of all is the misinterpretation
of religious scriptures, holy scriptures,
23
79890
5470
01:37
in the Bible, Old Testament,
New Testament, Quran and so forth,
24
85360
3623
01:40
and these have been misinterpreted by men
who are now in the ascendant positions
25
88983
7263
01:48
in the synagogues and the churches
and in the mosques.
26
96246
2629
01:50
And they interpret these rules
to make sure that women
27
98875
3831
01:54
are ordinarily relegated
to a secondary position
28
102706
4254
01:58
compared to men in the eyes of God.
29
106960
2888
02:02
This is a very serious problem.
It's ordinarily not addressed.
30
110558
4222
02:06
A number of years ago, in the year 2000,
31
114780
2111
02:08
I had been a Baptist,
a Southern Baptist for 70 years --
32
116891
3563
02:12
I tell you, I still teach
Sunday school every Sunday;
33
120454
2482
Sunday schools
02:14
I'll be teaching this Sunday as well --
34
122936
1871
02:16
but the Southern Baptist Convention
in the year 2000 decided
35
124807
4415
02:21
that women should play
a secondary position,
36
129222
2601
02:23
a subservient position to men.
37
131823
2066
02:25
So they issued an edict, in effect,
38
133889
2717
02:28
that prevents women from being priests,
pastors, deacons in the church,
39
136606
5904
02:34
or chaplains in the military,
40
142510
2292
02:36
and if a woman teaches a classroom
41
144802
3158
02:39
in a Southern Baptist seminary,
42
147960
2182
02:42
they cannot teach if a boy is in the room,
43
150142
3413
02:45
because you can find verses in the Bible,
44
153555
2021
02:47
there's over 30,000 verses in the Bible,
45
155576
3024
02:50
that say that a woman shouldn't
teach a man, and so forth.
46
158600
2810
02:53
But the basic thing is the scriptures
are misinterpreted
47
161410
3035
02:56
to keep men in an ascendant position.
48
164445
2461
02:58
That is an all-pervasive problem,
49
166906
2090
03:00
because men can exert that power
50
168996
4876
03:05
and if an abusive husband or an employer,
for instance, wants to cheat women,
51
173872
6014
03:11
they can say that if women
are not equal in the eyes of God,
52
179886
3784
03:15
why should I treat them as equals myself?
53
183670
2192
03:17
Why should I pay them equal pay
for doing the same kind of work?
54
185862
4458
03:22
The other very serious blight
55
190320
1927
03:24
that causes this problem
is the excessive resort to violence,

4017

03:32
In the United States of America,
for instance, we have had
58
200858
2929

We're in California now,

72
247555

04:22
that California has spent

2995
California

for the death penalty.
74
253406
4412
04:29
If you add that up, that's 307 million

75
257818
4835

04:41
because it costs so much. (Applause)
78
269474
4466
04:46
So the resort to violence and abuse
of poor people and helpless people
79
274861
4226
04:51
is another cause of the increase
in abuse of women.
80
279087
4098
04:55
Let me just go down a very few
abuses of women that concern me most,
81
283475
4504
04:59
and I'll be fairly brief, because I have
a limited amount of time, as you know.
82
287979
3901
05:03
One is genital mutilation.
83
291880
4250
05:08
Genital mutilation is horrible
and not known by American women,
84
296360
4114
05:12
but in some countries, many countries,
85
300474

Those are the kinds of things
that go on in our society.

Another thing that's very serious
about the abuse of women and girls
193

11:35
is the lack of equal pay for equal work,
194
683214

11:55
So we've made some progress,
partially because I was president
199
703369

12:08
so it's been just about 23

202
716568
2856

12:11
for the last 15 years.
203
719424
2275
12:13
These are the kind of things that go on.

If you take the Fortune 500 companies,

12:23
and those CEOs, I need not tell you,

731660
3135

12:31
Well, that's what goes on in our country.
211
739910
2478
12:34
Another problem with the United States
212
742388
2484
12:36
is we are the most warlike
nation on Earth.
213
744872
3692

12:40
We have been to war
with about 25 different countries
214
748564
4226

since the Second World War.
215
752790

12:47
Sometimes, we've had soldiers
on the ground fighting.
216
755251
2531
12:49
The other times,
we've been flying overhead
217
757782
2020
12:51
dropping bombs on people.
218
759802
1973
12:53
Other times, of course, now, we have
drones that attack people and so forth.
219
761775
3762
12:57
We've been at war
with 25 different countries
220
765537
2673
13:00
or more since the Second World War.
221
768210
2783
13:02
There was four years,
I won't say which ones,
222
770993
2377
13:05
where we didn't --
223
773370
1594
13:06
(Applause) -- we didn't drop a bomb,
we didn't launch a missile,
224
774964
5758
13:12
we didn't fire a bullet.
225
780722
1742
13:14
But anyway, those kinds of things,
the resort to violence
226
782464
4396
13:18
and the misinterpretation
of the holy scriptures
227
786860
2616
13:21
are what causes, are the basic causes,
of abuse of women and girls.
228
789476
5294
13:26
There's one more basic cause
that I need not mention,
229
794770
3599
13:30
and that is that in general,
men don't give a damn.
230
798369
5341
13:35
(Applause)
That's true.
231
803710
3041
13:38
The average man that might say,
I'm against the abuse of women and girls
232
806751
5026
13:43
quietly accepts the privileged
position that we occupy,
233
811777
4353
13:48
and this is very similar
to what I knew when I was a child,
234
816130
3440
13:51
when separate but equal had existed.
235
819570
2227
13:53
Racial discrimination, legally,
had existed for 100 years,
236
821797
5643
13:59
from 1865 at the end of the War
Between the States, the Civil War,
237
827440
3133
14:02
all the way up to the 1960s,
238
830573
2844
14:05
when Lyndon Johnson got the bills passed
239
833417
2717
Lyndon Johnson က
14:08
for equal rights.
240
836134
1973
14:10
But during that time,
there were many white people
241
838107
2740
14:12
that didn't think that
racial discrimination was okay,
242
840847
3367
14:16
but they stayed quiet,
243
844214
2159
14:18
because they enjoyed the privileges
of better jobs,
244
846373
5134
14:23
unique access to jury duty,
245
851507
3411
14:26
better schools, and everything else,
246
854918
2251
14:29
and that's the same thing
that exists today,
247
857169
2161
14:31
because the average man
really doesn't care.
248
859330
3645
14:34
Even though they say, "I'm against
discrimination against girls and women,"
249
862975
6345
14:41
they enjoy a privileged position.
250
869320
3450
14:44
And it's very difficult to get
the majority of men
251
872770
2372
14:47
who control the university system,
252
875142
3046
14:50
the majority of men that control
the military system,
253
878188
2664
14:52
the majority of men that control
the governments of the world,
254
880852
3498
14:56
and the majority of men that control
the great religions.
255
884350
5234
15:01
So what is the basic thing
that we need to do today?
256
889584
3413
15:04
I would say the best thing
that we could do today
257
892997
2531
15:07
is for the women in the powerful nations
258
895528
4312
15:11
like this one, and where you come from,
259
899840
2723
15:14
Europe and so forth, who have influence
and who have freedom to speak and to act,
260
902563
4969
15:19
need to take the responsibility
on yourselves
261
907532
5026
15:24
to be more forceful in demanding
262
912558
3065
15:27
an end to racial discrimination
against girls and women
263
915623
4642
15:32
all over the world.
264
920265
1361
15:33
The average woman in Egypt
265
921626
2901
15:36
doesn't have much to say
about her daughters
266
924527
2166
15:38
getting genitally mutilated and so forth.
267
926693
3408
15:42
I didn't even go down
to detail about that.
268
930101
2074
15:44
But I hope that out of this conference,
269
932175
2059
15:46
that every woman here
will get your husbands to realize
270
934234
4514
15:50
that these abuses on the college campuses
and the military and so forth
271
938748
4122
15:54
and in the future job market,
272
942872
2539
15:57
need to protect your daughters
and your granddaughters.
273
945411
4449
16:01
I have 12 grandchildren,
four children, and 10 great-grandchildren,
274
949860
5762

16:07
and I think often about them
275
955622
1924
16:09
and about the plight that they
will face in America,
