ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Ramanan Laxminarayan - Drug-resistance economist
At the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy, economist Ramanan Laxminarayan looks at big-picture issues of global health.

Why you should listen

Economist Ramanan Laxminarayan works to improve understanding of drug resistance as a problem of managing a shared global resource. As Director and Senior Fellow at the Center for Disease Dynamics, Economics & Policy (CDDEP), he is interested in cross-disciplinary, pragmatic solutions to reduce drug resistance. He has advised the World Health Organization and World Bank on evaluating malaria treatment policy, vaccination strategies, the economic burden of tuberculosis, and control of non-communicable diseases. He was a key architect of the Affordable Medicines Facility for malaria, a novel financing mechanism to improve access and delay resistance to antimalarial drugs. In 2012, he created the Immunization Technical Support Unit in India, which has been credited with improving the immunization program in the country. He teaches at Princeton.

As he says: "It has been a long time since people died of untreatable bacterial infections, and the prospect of returning to that world is worrying."

Ramanan Laxminarayan: De naderende crisis rond antibiotica

Antibioticakuren redden levens.

04:05
and that is the problemprobleem of antibioticantibioticum resistanceweerstand.
86
233915

Dát is het probleem van
antibioticaresistentie.
04:09
It's a globalglobaal issuekwestie

Het is een wereldwijd probleem

you mightmacht say, well,
89
242001

is dit niet gewoon een medisch probleem,
04:16
isn't this really just a medicalmedisch issuekwestie?
90
244242

als dokters minder antibiotica

Now, it turnsbochten out that there's something

Maar antibiotica heeft
een fundamentele eigenschap
04:33
whichwelke makesmerken it differentverschillend from other drugsdrugs,

This is what economistseconomen mightmacht

And typicallytypisch, in the casegeval of energyenergie,
121
317713

In het geval van energieverbruik zijn er
eigenlijk twee oplossingen.
05:31
there are two waysmanieren in whichwelke
you can dealtransactie with the problemprobleem.
122
319523
2308
05:33
One is, we can make better
use of the oilolie- that we have,
123
321831

De eerste is: beter gebruik maken
van de beschikbare olie,
05:37
and that's analogousanaloog to makingmaking better use
124

analoog aan beter gebruik maken

05:39
of existingbestaand antibioticsantibiotica,
125
327691
1548
05:41
and we can do this in a numberaantal of waysmanieren
126
329239

Dit kan op verschillende manieren,
daarover straks meer,
05:42
that we'llgoed talk about in a secondtweede,

05:45

is to go find newnieuwe antibioticsantibiotica.
129
