ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Mikko Hypponen - Cybersecurity expert
As computer access expands, Mikko Hypponen asks: What's the next killer virus, and will the world be able to cope with it? And also: How can we protect digital privacy in the age of government surveillance?

Why you should listen

The chief research officer at F-Secure Corporation in Finland, Mikko Hypponen has led his team through some of the largest computer virus outbreaks in history. His team took down the world-wide network used by the Sobig.F worm. He was the first to warn the world about the Sasser outbreak, and he has done classified briefings on the operation of the Stuxnet worm -- a hugely complex worm designed to sabotage Iranian nuclear enrichment facilities.

As a few hundred million more Internet users join the web from India and China and elsewhere, and as governments and corporations become more sophisticated at using viruses as weapons, Hypponen asks, what's next? Who will be at the front defending the world’s networks from malicious software? He says: "It's more than unsettling to realize there are large companies out there developing backdoors, exploits and trojans."

Even more unsettling: revelations this year that the United States' NSA is conducting widespread digital surveillance of both US citizens and anyone whose data passes through a US entity, and that it has actively sabotaged encryption algorithms. Hypponen has become one of the most outspoken critics of the agency's programs and asks us all: Why are we so willing to hand over digital privacy?

03:17
Now of coursekurz, we had a very interestingzaujímavý discussiondiskusia.
67
182000
3000
Mali sme samozrejme veľmi zaujímavú diskusiu.
03:20
I askedspýtal them why.

Pýtal som sa prečo.
03:22
I askedspýtal them how they feel about what they startedzahájená.

Pýtal som sa čo cítia z toho čo naštartovali.
03:25
And I got some sortdruh of satisfactionuspokojenie

3000
A tak trochu som sa potešil,
03:28
from learningštúdium that bothoboje BasitJozef Kišš and AmjadAmjad

2000
počas tých rokov.
03:38
So there is some sortdruh of justicespravodlivosť
75
203000
2000
Takže je predsa istá spravodlivosť
03:40
in the worldsvet after all.
76

vo svete.
03:44
Now, the virusesvírusy that we used to see

v 80-tych a 90-tych rokoch
03:48
obviouslysamozrejme are not a problemproblém any more.
79
213000
3000
už nie sú problémom.
03:51
So let me just showšou you a couplepár of examplespríklady

ako zvykli vyzerať.
03:55
What I'm runningbezat here
82
220000
2000
To čo tu púšťam
03:57
is a systemsystém that enablesumožňuje me
83
222000

je systém, ktorý mi umožňuje
03:59
to runbeh age-oldprastarý programsrelácie on a modernmoderný computerpočítačový.
84
224000
3000
spúšťať prastaré programy na modernom počítači.
04:02
So let me just mountkôň some drivespohony. Go over there.
85
227000
3000
Pripojím nejaké disky. Sem.
04:05
What we have here is a listzoznam of oldstarý virusesvírusy.
86
230000
3000
Tu máme zoznam starých vírusov.
04:08
So let me just runbeh some virusesvírusy on my computerpočítačový.
87
233000
3000
Pustím teda zopár vírusov na mojom počítači.
04:11
For examplepríklad,
88
236000
2000
Napríklad
04:13
let's go with the CentipedeStonožka virusvírus first.
89
238000
2000
pozrime sa najskôr na Centipede (Stonožku).
04:15
And you can see at the toptop of the screenplátno,

A vidíte na vrchu obrazovky,
04:17
there's a centipedeStonožka scrollingposúvanie acrossnaprieč your computerpočítačový
91
242000
2000
stonožka beží cez váš počítač
04:19
when you get infectednakazený by this one.
92
244000
2000
keď sa infikuje týmto.
04:21
You know that you're infectednakazený
93
246000
2000
Viete, že ste boli infikovaní,
04:23
because it actuallyvlastne showsrelácie up.
94

lebo sa to ukáže.
04:25
Here'sTu je anotherďalší one. This is the virusvírus calledvolal CrashCrash,
95

04:30
Let me showšou you one whichktorý actuallyvlastne makesznačky some soundznieť.

Ukážem vám jeden, ktorý robí nejaký zvuk.
04:34
(SirenSiréna noisehluk)
98
259000
6000
(Hluk sirény)
04:40
And the last examplepríklad,
99
265000
2000
A posledný príklad,
04:42
guesshádať what the WalkerWalker virusvírus does?
100
267000
2000
hádajte čo robí vírus Walker (Chodec).
04:44
Yes, there's a guy walkingchôdza acrossnaprieč your screenplátno
101
269000
2000
Áno, je tam panák kráčajúci cez obrazovku
04:46
onceakonáhle you get infectednakazený.
102
271000
2000
keď vás infikuje.
04:48
So it used to be fairlyspravodlivo easyjednoduchý to know
103
273000
3000
Takže to bývalo ľahké vedieť,
04:51
that you're infectednakazený by a virusvírus,
104
276000
3000
že ste infikovaní virusom,
04:54

05:02
TodayDnes, virusesvírusy are a globalglobálnej problemproblém.
109
287000
3000
Dnes sú vírusy globálny problém.
05:05
What we have here in the backgroundpozadie
110
290000
2000
To čo tu máme na pozadí
05:07
is an examplepríklad of our systemssystémy that we runbeh in our labslaboratória,
111
292000
3000
je príklad nášho systému, ktorý beží v našich laboratóriách,

Títo ľudia sa proste nedajú vypnúť.

09:58
So how do you actuallyvlastne go around findingnález onlineon-line criminalszločinci?
226
583000
3000
Takže ako vlastne môžeme hľadať online kriminálnikov?
10:01
How do you actuallyvlastne trackstopa them down?
227
586000
2000
Ako ich vlastne vystopujete.
10:03
Let me give you an examplepríklad.
228
588000
2000
Dám vám príklad.
10:05
What we have here is one exploitťažiť filesúbor.
229
590000
3000
Tu máme jeden súbor na využitie bezpečnostných dier - exploit.
10:08
Here, I'm looking at the HexHex dumpskládka of an imageobraz filesúbor,
230
593000
4000
Pozerám sa na hexový výpis obrazového súboru,
10:12
whichktorý containsobsahuje an exploitťažiť.
231
597000
2000
ktorý obsahuje exploit.
10:14
And that basicallyv podstate meansprostriedky, if you're tryingsnažia to viewvyhliadka this imageobraz filesúbor on your WindowsWindows computerpočítačový,
232
599000
3000
To vlastne znamená, že keď si pozriete tento obrázok na vašom počítači s Windows,
10:17
it actuallyvlastne takes over your computerpočítačový and runsbeží codekód.
233
602000
3000
prevezme to váš počítač a spustí kód.
10:20
Now, if you'llbudete take a look at this imageobraz filesúbor --
234
605000
3000
Keď sa pozriete na tento obrázkový súbor --
10:23
well there's the imageobraz headerHlavička,
235
608000
2000
to je obrazová hlavička
10:25
and there the actualskutočný codekód of the attackútok startszačína.
236
610000
3000
a tu začína vlastný kód útoku.
10:28
And that codekód has been encryptedšifrovaný,
237
613000
2000
A ten kód bol zašifrovaný,
10:30
so let's decryptdešifrovanie it.
238
615000
2000
takže ho rozšifrujeme.
10:32
It has been encryptedšifrovaný with XORXOR functionfunkcie 97.
239
617000
2000
Použila sa šifrovacia funkcia XOR 97.
10:34
You just have to believe me,
240
619000
2000
Musíte mi proste veriť,
10:36
it is, it is.
241
621000
2000
je to tak, je to tak.
10:38
And we can go here
242
623000
2000
Môžme ísť sem
10:40
and actuallyvlastne startštart decryptingdešifrovanie it.
243
625000
2000
a začať ho dešifrovať.
10:42
Well the yellowžltá partčasť of the codekód is now decrypteddešifrovať.
244
627000
2000
Žlté časti kódu sú teraz dešifrované.
10:44
And I know, it doesn't really look much differentrozdielny from the originaloriginálny.
245
629000
3000
A viem, že to nevyzerá príliš odlišne od originálu.
10:47
But just keep staringuprený at it.
246
632000
2000
Ale len sa na to pozerajte.
10:49
You'llBudete actuallyvlastne see that down here
247
634000
2000
Tu dolu uvidíte
10:51
you can see a WebWeb addressadresa:

10:59
And when you viewvyhliadka this imageobraz on your computerpočítačový
250
644000
2000
A keď otvoríte tento obrázok na vašom počítači
11:01
it actuallyvlastne is going to downloadStiahnuť ▼ and runbeh that programprogram.
251
646000
2000
on vlastne stiahne a spustí ten program.
11:03
And that's a backdoorBackdoor whichktorý will take over your computerpočítačový.
252
648000
3000
Sú to "zadné vrátka" - bezpečnostná chyba, ktorá spôsobí prevzatie vášho počítača.
11:06
But even more interestinglyzaujímavo,
253
651000
2000
Ale ešte zaujímavejšie je,
11:08
if we continueďalej decryptingdešifrovanie,
254
653000
2000
keď pokračujeme v dešifrovaní,
11:10
we'llmy budeme find this mysterioustajomný stringpovrázok,
255
655000

nájdeme tento záhadný reťazec,

11:17
That codekód is there underneathnaspodku the encryptionšifrovanie
257
662000
2000
Ten kód je pod šifrou
11:19
as some sortdruh of a signaturepodpis.
258
664000
2000
ako nejaký podpis.
11:21
It's not used for anything.
259
666000
2000
Nepoužíva sa na nič.
11:23
And I was looking at that, tryingsnažia to figurefigúra out what it meansprostriedky.
260
668000
3000
Ako som sa na to pozeral, skúšal som zistiť čo to znamená.
11:26
So obviouslysamozrejme I GoogledGoogled for it.
261
671000
2000
Vygooglil som to.
11:28
I got zeronula hitshity; wasn'tnebol there.
