ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Stefan Sagmeister - Graphic designer
Renowned for album covers, posters and his recent book of life lessons, designer Stefan Sagmeister invariably has a slightly different way of looking at things.

Why you should listen

Stefan Sagmeister is no mere commercial gun for hire. Sure, he's created eye-catching graphics for clients including the Rolling Stones and Lou Reed, but he pours his heart and soul into every piece of work. His design work is at once timeless and of the moment, and his painstaking attention to the smallest details creates work that offers something new every time you look at it.

While a sense of humor invariably surfaces in his designs, Sagmeister is nonetheless very serious about his work; his intimate approach and sincere thoughtfulness elevate his design. A genuine maverick, Sagmeister achieved notoriety in the 1990s as the designer who self-harmed in the name of craft: He created a poster advertising a speaking engagement by carving the salient details onto his torso.

00:24
About 15 years ago, I went to visit a friend in Hong Kong.
0
0
7000
00:31
And at the time I was very superstitious.
1
7000
4000
Në atë kohë unë kisha shumë bestytni.
00:35
So, upon landing -- this was still at the old Hong Kong airport
2
11000
5000
00:40
that's Kai Tak, when it was smack in the middle of the city --
3
16000
3000
00:43
I thought, "If I see something good, I'm going to have a great time here in
4
19000
5000
Unë mendova: Nëse shoh diçka të mirë, do të kaloj mirë
00:48
my two weeks. And if I see something negative, I'm going to be miserable, indeed."
5
24000
8000
gjatë këtyre dy javëve. Nëse shoh diçka negative, do të jem i trishtuar.
00:56
So the plane landed in between the buildings
6
32000
2000
00:58
and got to a full stop in front of this little billboard.
7
34000
7000
dhe u ndal para kësaj rreklame.
01:05
(Laughter)
8
41000
1000
(Qeshje)
01:06
And I actually went to see some of the design companies
9
42000
4000
Unë shkova ti shoh disa prej kompanive të dizajnit
01:10
in Hong Kong in my stay there.
10
46000
2000
gjatë vizitës në Hong Kong.
01:12
And it turned out that --
11
48000
2000
Dhe ajo që ndodhi ishte--
01:14
I just went to see, you know, what they are doing in Hong Kong.
12
50000
5000
01:19
But I actually walked away with a great job offer.
13
55000
4000
01:23
And I flew back to Austria, packed my bags,
14
59000
4000
U ktheva në Austri dhe pregatita valixhet.
01:27
and, another week later, I was again on my way to Hong Kong
15
63000
6000
01:33
still superstitions and thinking, "Well, if that 'Winner' billboard is still up,
16
69000
7000
01:40
I'm going to have a good time working here.
17
76000
2000
unë do të kaloj mirë edhe këtë herë.
01:42
(Laughter)
18
78000
1000
(te qeshura)
01:43
But if it's gone, it's going to be really miserable and stressful."
19
79000
6000
01:49
So it turned out that not only was the billboard still up
20
85000
4000
Jo që reklama ishte ende aty,
01:53
but they had put this one right next to it.
21
89000
2000
por ata e kishin vendosur edhe këtë afër saj.
01:55
(Laughter)
22
91000
3000
(te qeshura)
01:58
On the other hand, it also taught me where superstition gets me
23
94000
4000
Kjo më mësoj që bestytnia më gënjen,
02:02
because I really had a terrible time in Hong Kong.
24
98000
2000
02:04
(Laughter)
25
100000
3000
(te qeshura)
02:07
However, I did have a number of real moments of happiness in my life --
26
103000
11000
02:18
of, you know, I think what the conference brochure refers to
27
114000
5000
momente që, sipas broshures së konferencës,
02:23
as "moments that take your breath away."
28
119000
3000
të lenë pa frymë.
02:26
And since I'm a big list maker, I actually listed them all.
29
122000
7000
02:33
(Laughter)
30
129000
1000
(qeshje)
02:34
Now, you don't have to go through the trouble of reading them
31
130000
3000
Ju nuk keni pse i lexoni,
02:37
and I won't read them for you.
32
133000
3000
dhe unë nuk do ti lexoj për ju.
02:40
I know that it's incredibly boring to hear about other people's happinesses.
33
136000
4000
02:44
(Laughter)
34
140000
2000
(qeshje)
02:46
What I did do, though is, I actually looked at them from a design standpoint
35
142000
9000
02:55
and just eliminated all the ones that had nothing to do with design.
36
151000
6000
03:01
And, very surprisingly, over half of them had, actually, something to do with design.
37
157000
7000
03:08
So there are, of course, two different possibilities.
38
164000
3000
Kjo paraqet dy mundësi të ndryshme.
03:11
There's one from a consumer's point of view --
39
167000
2000
Njëra është nga pikëpamja e konsumatorit -
03:13
where I was happy while experiencing design.
40
169000
3000
ku isha i lumtur sepse e përjetova dizenjimin.
03:16
And I'll just give you one example. I had gotten my first Walkman.
41
172000
4000
Do t'ju jap një shembull. Në vitin 1983 bleva
03:20
This is 1983.
42
176000
2000
Walkman-in tim të parë.
03:22
My brother had this great Yamaha motorcycle
43
178000
3000
03:25
that he was willing to borrow to me freely.
44
181000
3000
03:28
And The Police's "Synchronicity"
45
184000
3000
Kisha kasetën "Synchronicity" të grupit Police
03:31
cassette had just been released
46
187000
2000
që sapo kishte dalur në treg,
03:33
and there was no helmet law in my hometown of Bregenz.
47
189000
3000
03:36
So you could drive up into the mountains
48
192000
2000
Kështu që ti mund t'i ngjiteshe malit me motor
03:38
freely blasting The Police on the new Sony Walkman.
49
194000
4000
duke dëgjuar The Police në Wakman-in Sony.
03:42
(Laughter)
50
198000
1000
(qeshje)
03:43
And I remember it as a true moment of happiness.
51
199000
5000
03:48
You know, of course, they are related to this combination of
52
204000
5000
03:53
at least two of them being, you know, design objects.
53
209000
4000
këtyre objekteve ishin objekte dizajni.
03:57
And, you know, there's a scale of happiness when you talk about in design
54
213000
4000
04:01
but the motorcycle incident would definitely be, you know,
55
217000
4000
por incidenti i motobicikletës do të
04:05
situated somewhere here -- right in there between Delight and Bliss.
56
221000
6000
04:11
Now, there is the other part, from a designer's standpoint --
57
227000
6000
04:17
if you're happy while actually doing it.
58
233000
2000
04:19
And one way to see how happy designers are when they're designing could be to
59
235000
7000
04:26
look at the authors' photos on the back of their monographs?
60
242000
4000
04:30
(Laughter)
61
246000
1000
(qeshje)
04:31
So, according to this, the Australians and the Japanese
62
247000
5000
Bazuar në këtë, Australianët dhe Japonezët,
04:36
as well as the Mexicans
63
252000
1000
si dhe Meksikanët
04:37
are very happy.
64
253000
2000
janë shumë të lumtur.
04:39
(Laughter)
65
255000
1000
(te qeshura)
04:40
While, somewhat, the Spaniards ...
66
256000
2000
Ndërsa Spanjollët dhe,
04:42
and, I think, particularly, the Swiss
67
258000
4000
unë mendoj, sidomos Zvicëranët,
04:46
(Laughter),
68
262000
2000
(te qeshura)
04:48
don't seem to be doing all that well.
69
264000
2000
nuk janë aq të lumtur.
04:50
(Laughter)
70
266000
8000
(te qeshura)
04:58
Last November, a museum opened in Tokyo called The Mori Museum,
71
274000
6000
05:04
in a skyscraper, up on the 56th floor.
72
280000
4000
në katin e 56-të të një ndërtese.
05:08
And their inaugural exhibit was called "Happiness."
73
284000
4000
Ekspozita inaguruese u quajt "Lumturia."
05:12
And I went, very eagerly, to see it, because --
74
288000
4000
Unë shkova, shumë i interesuar, për ta parë, sepse
05:16
well, also, with an eye on this conference.
75
292000
4000
kisha në mendje këtë konferencë.
05:20
And they interestingly sectioned the exhibit off into four different areas.
76
296000
10000
05:30
Under "Arcadia," they showed things like this, from the Edo period --
77
306000
4000
05:34
a hundred ways to write "happiness" in different forms.
78
310000
5000
05:39
Or they had this apple by Yoko Ono -- that, of course, later on
79
315000
4000
05:43
was, you know, made into the label for The Beatles.
80
319000
5000
u shëndërrua në një etiketë për Bitellsat
05:48
Under "Nirvana" they showed this Constable painting.
81
324000
4000
05:52
And there was a little -- an interesting theory about abstraction.
82
328000
4000
Kishte gjithashtu një teori interesante për abtraksionizmin.
05:56
This is a blue field -- it's actually an Yves Klein painting.
83
332000
4000
06:00
And the theory was that if you abstract an image, you really, you know
84
336000
5000
06:05
open as much room for the un-representable --
85
341000
4000
lejoni vend për gjëra të pa shfaqura--
06:09
and, therefore, you know, are able to involve the viewer more.
86
345000
6000
06:15
Then, under "Desire," they showed these Shunsho paintings --
87
351000
4000
06:19
also from the Edo period -- ink on silk.
88
355000
6000
06:25
And, lastly, under "Harmony," they had this 13th-century mandala from Tibet.
89
361000
7000
06:32
Now, what I took away from the exhibit was that
90
368000
4000
Ajo që kuptova prej ekspozitës ishte që
06:36
maybe with the exception of the mandala
91
372000
3000
ndoshta, me përjashtim të mandales,
06:39
most of the pieces in there were actually about the visualization of happiness
92
375000
6000
shumica e këtyre pjesëve kishin të bëjnë me portretizimin e lumturisë,
06:45
and not about happiness.
93
381000
2000
dhe jo me lumturinë.
06:47
And I felt a little bit cheated, because the visualization --
94
383000
4000
U ndjeva pak i mashtruar, sepse portretizimi është
06:51
that's a really easy thing to do.
95
387000
3000
një gjë e lehtë për tu bërë.
06:54
And, you know, my studio -- we've done it all the time.
96
390000
3000
Studjo ime e ka bërë këtë gjatë gjithë kohës.
06:57
This is, you know, a book.
97
393000
2000
Ky është nje libër.
06:59
A happy dog -- and you take it out, it's an aggressive dog.
98
395000
4000
07:03
It's a happy David Byrne and an angry David Byrne.
99
399000
6000
07:09
Or a jazz poster with a happy face and a more aggressive face.
100
405000
4000
07:13
You know, that's not a big deal to accomplish.
101
409000
4000
07:17
It has gotten to the point where, you know, within advertising
102
413000
5000
07:22
or within the movie industry, "happy" has gotten such a bad reputation that
103
418000
6000
07:28
if you actually want to do something with the subject
104
424000
3000
Nëse dëshironi të bëni diçka
07:31
and still appear authentic, you almost would have to, you know,
105
427000
5000
autotoktone me subjektin tuaj, ju gjithmonë duhet
07:36
do it from a cynical point of view.
106
432000
3000
ta bëni këtë prej një pikëpamje cinike.
07:39
This is, you know, the movie poster.
107
435000
3000
Kjo është pllakata e filmit.
07:42
Or we, a couple of weeks ago, designed a box set for The Talking Heads
108
438000
5000
07:47
where the happiness visualized on the cover definitely has, very much, a dark side to it.
109
443000
11000
07:58
Much, much more difficult is this, where the designs actually can evoke happiness --
110
454000
9000
08:07
and I'm going to just show you three that actually did this for me.
111
463000
7000
08:14
This is a campaign done by a young artist in New York, who calls himself "True."
112
470000
6000
08:20
Everybody who has ridden the New York subway system will be
113
476000
3000
08:23
familiar with these signs?
114
479000
3000
i njeh këto shenja.
08:26
True printed his own version of these signs.
115
482000
4000
True shtypi variantin e tij të këtyre shënjave.
08:30
Met every Wednesday at a subway stop with 20 of his friends.
116
486000
5000
08:35
They divided up the different subway lines and added their own version.
117
491000
6000
08:41
(Laughter)
118
497000
1000
(Qeshje)
08:42
So this is one.
119
498000
2000
Kjo ështe një prej tyre.
08:44
(Laughter)
120
500000
6000
(Qeshje)
08:50
Now, the way this works in the system is that nobody ever looks at these signs.
121
506000
5000
08:55
So you're
122
511000
2000
Kshtu kur jeni
08:57
(Laughter)
123
513000
1000
(qeshje)
08:58
you're really bored in the subway, and you kind of stare at something.
124
514000
5000
09:03
And it takes you a while until it actually --
125
519000
2000
Të merr pak kohë derisa
09:05
you realize that this says something different than what it normally says.
126
521000
4000
09:09

(qeshje)
09:11
I mean, that's, at least, how it made me happy.
128
527000
3000
Të paktën më bëri mua të lumtur.

Now, True is a real humanitarian.
130
541000
4000
Tani, True është një humanitar i vërtetë.
09:29
He didn't want any of his friends to be arrested,
131
545000
2000
09:31
so he supplied everybody with this fake volunteer card.
132
547000
5000
09:36
(Laughter)
133
552000
3000
(Qeshje)
09:39
And also gave this fake letter from the MTA to everybody --
134
555000
4000
09:43
sort of like pretending that it's an art project
135
559000
3000
09:46
financed by The Metropolitan Transit Authority.
136
562000

i financuar nga Autoriteti i Tranzitit Metorpolitan.

Another New York project.
138
566000
3000
Një projekt tjetër nga Nju Jorku.
09:53
This is at P.S. 1 -- a sculpture that's basically a square room
139
569000
3000
09:56
by James Turrell, that has a retractable ceiling.
140
572000
4000
10:00
Opens up at dusk and dawn every day.
141
576000
3000
Hapet çdo dite në muzg dhe agim.
10:03
You don't see the horizon.
142
579000
1000
Ju nuk e shihni horizontin.
10:04
You're just in there, watching the incredible, subtle changes of color in the sky.
143
580000
7000
10:11
And the room is truly something to be seen.
144
587000
5000
10:16
People's demeanor changes when they go in there.
145
592000
5000
Sjellja e njerëzve ndërron kur hyjnë brenda saj.
10:21
And, for sure, I haven't looked at the sky in the same way
146
597000
5000
10:26
after spending an hour in there.
147
602000
3000
pasi kalova një orë aty.
10:29
There are, of course, more than those three projects that I'm showing here.
148
605000
5000
10:34
I would definitely say that observing Vik Muniz' "Cloud"
149
610000
4000
Kur e vështrova "Renë" e Vik Muniz
10:38
a couple of years ago in Manhattan for sure made me happy, as well.
150
614000
4000
10:42
But my last project is, again, from a young designer in New York.
151
618000
5000
10:47
He's from Korea originally.
152
623000
1000
Ai është nga Koreja.
10:48
And he took it upon himself to print 55,000 speech bubbles --
153
624000
8000
Ai i printoi 55,000 fluska fjalësh --
10:56
empty speech bubbles stickers, large ones and small ones.
154
632000
3000
10:59
And he goes around New York and just puts them, empty as they are, on posters.
155
635000
5000
11:04
(Laughter)
156
640000
2000
(Qeshje)
11:06
And other people go and fill them in.
157
642000
3000
11:09
(Laughter)
158
645000
3000
(Qeshje)
11:12
This one says, "Please let me die in peace."
159
648000
3000
11:15
(Laughter)
160
651000
7000
(Qeshje)
11:22
I think that was --
161
658000
2000
Unë mendoj se ishte
11:24
the most surprising to myself was that the writing was actually so good.
162
660000
5000
11:29
This is on a musician poster, that says:
163
665000
3000
11:32
"I am concerned that my CD will not sell more than 200,000 units
164
668000
4000
11:36
and that, as a result, my recoupable advance
165
672000
4000
Si rezultat, kompanija a muzikes do të tërheqi
11:40
from my label will be taken from me,
166
676000
2000
paradhenien nga fitimet.
11:42
after which, my contract will be cancelled,
167
678000
2000
Pas kësaj, kontrata ime do të anulohet,
11:44
and I'll be back doing Journey covers on Bleecker Street."
168
680000
3000
11:47
(Laughter)
169
683000
19000
(Qeshje)
12:06
I think the reason this works so well is because everybody involved wins.
170
702000
5000
Unë mendoj që kjo funksionon sepse çdo njeri që merr pjesë fiton.
12:11
Jee gets to have his project;
171
707000
2000
Jee mundëson projektin e vet;
12:13
the public gets a sweeter environment;
172
709000
4000
publiku ka një ambient më të këndshëm;
12:17
and different public gets a place to express itself;
173
713000
4000
dhe njerëzit e ndryshëm mund të shprehin veten;
12:21
and the advertisers finally get somebody to look at their ads.
174
717000
4000
12:25
(Laughter)
175
721000
7000
(Qeshje)
12:32
Well, there was a question, of course, that was on my mind for a while:
176
728000
6000
12:38
You know, can I do more of the things that I like doing in design
177
734000
5000
12:43
and less of the ones that I don't like to be doing?
178
739000
4000
12:47
Which brought me back to my list making --
179
743000
4000
E cila më çoi përsëri te bërja e listave
12:51
you know, just to see what I actually like about my job.
180
747000
3000
12:54
You know, one is: just working without pressure.
181
750000
4000
E para është: puna pa presion.
12:58
Then: working concentrated, without being frazzled.
182
754000
4000
Pastaj :puna e përqëndruar, pa u rraskapitur.
13:02
Or, as Nancy said before, like really immerse oneself into it.
183
758000
6000
13:08
Try not to get stuck doing the same thing --
184
764000
3000
13:11
or try not get stuck behind the computer all day.
185
767000
4000
ose të mundohem të largohem nga kompjuteri.
13:15
This is, you know, related to it: getting out of the studio.
186
771000
4000
Të mundohem të largohem nga studjo.
13:19
Then, of course, trying to, you know, work on things
187
775000
3000
Pastaj, të përpiqem të punoj në gjëra
13:22
where the content is actually important for me.
188
778000
3000
13:25
And being able to enjoy the end results.
189
781000
6000
13:31
And then I found another list in one of my diaries that actually contained
190
787000
8000
13:39
all the things that I thought I learned in my life so far.
191
795000
4000
13:43
And, just about at that time, an Austrian magazine called and asked
192
799000
5000
13:48
if we would want to do six spreads -- design six spreads
193
804000
4000
13:52
that work like dividing pages between the different chapters in the magazine?
194
808000
5000
13:57
And the whole thing just fell together.
195
813000
2000
Kjo ndodhi.
13:59
So I just picked one of the things that I thought I learned --
196
815000
6000
14:05
in this case, "Everything I do always comes back to me" --
197
821000
3000
14:08
and we made these spreads right out of this.
198
824000
3000
dhe i krijuam këto faqe prej këtyre.
14:11
So it was: "Everything
199
827000
2000
Ishte kështu: Cdo gjë
14:13
I do
200
829000
2000
që bëj
14:15
always
201
831000
2000
çdo herë
14:17
comes
202
833000
1000
kthehet
14:18
back
203
834000
2000
tek
14:20
to me."
204
836000
2000
unë.
14:22
A couple of weeks ago, a
205
838000
2000
Para dy javëve,
14:24
(Laughter)
206
840000
2000
(Qeshje)
14:26
French company asked us to design five billboards for them.
207
842000
5000
14:31
Again, we could supply the content for it.
208
847000
3000
14:34
So I just picked another one.
209
850000
2000
Kështu qe e zgjodha një tjetër.
14:36
And this was two weeks ago.
210
852000
2000
Kjo ishte para dy javësh.
14:38
We flew to Arizona -- the designer who works with me, and myself --
211
854000
6000
14:44
and photographed this one.
212
860000
2000
dhe fotografuam këtë.
14:46
So it's: "Trying
213
862000
3000
Është: Përpjekja
14:49
to look
214
865000
1000
për tu dukur
14:50
good
215
866000
2000
mirë
14:52
limits
216
868000
2000
limiton
14:54
my life."
217
870000
2000
jetën time.
14:56
And then we did one more of these.
218
872000
3000
Pastaj e krijuam edhe një.
14:59
This is, again, for a magazine, dividing pages.
219
875000
5000
Kjo është, përsëri, për një revistë.
15:04
This is: "Having" --
220
880000
1000
Është: Të kesh --
15:05
this is the same thing;
221
881000
1000
Kjo është e njejta gjë
15:06
it's just, you know, photographed from the side.
222
882000
3000
e fotografuam prej anës.
15:09
This is from the front.
223
885000
1000
Kjo është përballë.
15:10
Then it's: "guts."
224
886000
2000
Pastaj është: guxim
15:12
Again, it's the same thing -- "guts" is just the same room, reworked.
225
888000
5000
Përsëri, e njejta gjë --"guxim" është e njejta dhomë, e ripunuar.
15:17
Then it's: "always
226
893000
2000
Pastaj vjen: gjithmonë
15:19
works out."
227
895000
5000
bën punë
15:24
Then it's "for," with the light on.
228
900000
3000
Pastaj, "për", me dritë të ndezur
15:27
(Laughter)
229
903000
2000
dhe
15:29
And it's "me."
230
905000
2000
"mua."
15:31
Thank you so much.
231
907000
2000
Faleminderit.
15:33
(Applause)
