ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jane McGonigal - Game Designer
Reality is broken, says Jane McGonigal, and we need to make it work more like a game. Her work shows us how.

Why you should listen

Jane McGonigal asks: Why doesn't the real world work more like an online game? In the best-designed games, our human experience is optimized: We have important work to do, we're surrounded by potential collaborators, and we learn quickly and in a low-risk environment. In her work as a game designer, she creates games that use mobile and digital technologies to turn everyday spaces into playing fields, and everyday people into teammates. Her game-world insights can explain--and improve--the way we learn, work, solve problems, and lead our real lives. She served as the director of game R&D at the Institute for the Future, and she is the founder of Gameful, which she describes as "a secret headquarters for worldchanging game developers."

Several years ago she suffered a serious concussion, and she created a multiplayer game to get through it, opening it up to anyone to play. In “Superbetter,” players set a goal (health or wellness) and invite others to play with them--and to keep them on track. While most games, and most videogames, have traditionally been about winning, we are now seeing increasing collaboration and games played together to solve problems.

01:20
I know what she wants us to do with those minutes

01:28
given特定 that I have made製作 quite相當 a habit習慣 of encouraging鼓舞人心的 people

to spend more time playing播放 games遊戲.
27
74838
1816
01:32
For example, in my first TEDTalkTED演講,
28
76654
1823
01:34
I did propose提出 that we should spend 21 billion十億 hours小時 a week

01:44
It's so much time, in fact事實, that the number one unsolicited不請自來 comment評論

01:48
that I have heard聽說 from people all over the world世界

01:51
since以來 I gave that talk, is this:

01:53
Jane, games遊戲 are great and all, but on your deathbed臨終,
35

4105

are you really going to wish希望 you spent花費 more time playing播放 Angry憤怒 Birds鳥類?
36
101255
3750
02:00
This idea理念 is so pervasive無處不在 -- that games遊戲 are a waste浪費 of time
37
105005
4609
02:05
that we will come to regret後悔 -- that I hear it literally按照字面 everywhere到處 I go.
38
109614
3553
02:09
For example, true真正 story故事: Just a few少數 weeks ago,

02:17
turned轉身 around and said -- and I quote引用 --
42

02:19
"I hate討厭 games遊戲. Waste浪費 of life. Imagine想像 getting得到 to the end結束 of your life
43

02:25
and regretting後悔 all that time."
44
129542
2562
02:28
Now, I want to take this problem問題 seriously認真地.
45
132104
3090
02:31
I mean, I want games遊戲 to be a force for good in the world世界.
46
135194
2420
02:33
I don't want gamers遊戲玩家 to regret後悔 the time they spent花費 playing播放,
47
137614
2920
02:36
time that I encouraged鼓勵 them to spend.
48
140534
2050
02:38
So I have been thinking思維 about this question a lot lately最近.
49
142584
3126
02:41
When we're on our deathbeds臨終, will we regret後悔
50
145710
3520
02:45
the time we spent花費 playing播放 games遊戲?
51
149230
1952
02:47
Now, this may可能 surprise you, but it turns out

06:59
Of course課程 it's meant意味著 to be funny滑稽,
132
403278

07:01
but in all seriousness嚴肅, suicidal自殺 ideation意念 is quite相當 common共同
133
405233
4425
07:05
with traumatic創傷 brain injuries受傷.
134
409658
1585
07:07
It happens發生 to one in three, and it happened發生 to me.
135
411243
3462
07:10
My brain started開始 telling告訴 me, Jane, you want to die.
136
414705
5048
07:15
It said, you're never going to get better.
137
419753
3010
07:18
It said, the pain疼痛 will never end結束.
138
422763

07:22
And these voices聲音 became成為 so persistent一貫 and so persuasive說服力
139
426605
4321
07:26
that I started開始 to legitimately合理地 fear恐懼 for my life,
140
430926
6076
07:32
which哪一個 is the time that I said to myself after 34 days --
141
437002
4055
07:36
and I will never forget忘記 this moment時刻 --
142
441057
1912
07:38
I said, I am either going to kill myself
143
442969
3137
07:42
or I'm going to turn this into a game遊戲.
144
446106
2958
07:44
Now, why a game
145
449064
1425
07:46
I knew知道 from researching研究 the psychology心理學 of games遊戲 for more than a decade
146
450489
3625
07:50
that when we play a game遊戲 -- and this is in the scientific科學 literature文學 --
147
454114
3810
07:53
we tackle滑車 tough強硬 challenges挑戰 with more creativity創造力,
148
457924
3045
07:56
more determination決心, more optimism樂觀,
149
460969
1929
07:58
and we're more likely容易 to reach達到 out to others其他 for help.
150
462898
2480
08:01
And I wanted to bring帶來 these gamer玩家 traits性狀 to my real-life現實生活 challenge挑戰,
151
465378
2609
08:03
so I created創建 a role-playing角色扮演 recovery復甦 game遊戲
152
467987
2350
08:06
called Jane the Concussion震動 Slayer殺手.
153
470337
1976
08:08
Now this became成為 my new secret秘密 identity身分,
154
472313
2664
08:10
and the first thing I did as a slayer殺手
155
474977
1968
08:12
was call my twin雙胞胎 sister妹妹 -- I have an identical相同 twin雙胞胎 sister妹妹 named命名 Kelly黃綠色 --
156
476945
3632
08:16
and tell her, I'm playing播放 a game遊戲 to heal癒合 my brain,
157
480577
3688
08:20
and I want you to play with me.
158
484265
2139
08:22
This was an easier更輕鬆 way to ask for help.
159
486404
3846
08:26
She became成為 my first ally盟友 in the game遊戲,
160
490250
2615
08:28
my husband丈夫 KiyashKiyash joined加盟 next下一個,
161
492865
1848
08:30
and together一起 we identified確定 and battled作戰 the bad guys.
162
494713
3712
08:34
Now this was anything that could trigger觸發 my symptoms症狀
163
498425
2824
08:37
and therefore因此 slow down the healing復原 process處理,
164
501249
2417
08:39
things like bright lights燈火 and crowded spaces空間.
165
503666
1999
08:41
We also collected and activated活性 power-ups通電.
166
505665
3360
08:44
This was anything I could do on even my worst最差 day
167
509025
2768
08:47
to feel just a little bit good,
168
511793
2664
08:50
just a little bit productive生產的.
169
514457
1511
08:51
Things like cuddling擁抱 my dog for 10 minutes分鐘,
170
515968
2674
08:54
or getting得到 out of bed and walking步行 around the block just once一旦.
171
518642
3567
08:58
Now the game遊戲 was that simple簡單:
172
522209
1634
08:59
Adopt採用 a secret秘密 identity身分, recruit your allies盟國,
173
523843
2854
09:02
battle戰鬥 the bad guys, activate啟用 the power-ups通電.
174
526697
3007
09:05
But even with a game遊戲 so simple簡單,
175
529704
2169
09:07
within just a couple一對 days of starting開始 to play,
176
531873
2329
09:10
that fog多霧路段 of depression蕭條 and anxiety焦慮
177
534202
2784
09:12
went away. It just vanished消失. It felt like a miracle奇蹟.
178
536986
4007
09:16
Now it wasn't a miracle奇蹟 cure治愈 for the headaches頭痛
179
540993
2512
09:19
or the cognitive認知 symptoms症狀.
180
543505
1200
09:20
That lasted歷時 for more than a year,
181
544705
1643
09:22
and it was the hardest最難 year of my life by far.
182
546348
2798
09:25
But even when I still had the symptoms
183
549146
2274
09:27
even while I was still in pain疼痛, I stopped停止 suffering痛苦.
184
551420
4293
09:31
Now what happened發生 next下一個 with the game遊戲 surprised詫異 me.
185
555713
3072
09:34
I put up some blog博客 posts帖子 and videos視頻 online線上,
186
558785
2499
09:37
explaining說明 how to play.
187
561284
1445
09:38
But not everybody每個人 has a concussion震動, obviously明顯,
188
562729
2555
09:41
not everyone大家 wants to be "the slayer殺手,"
189
565284
2256
09:43
so I renamed改名 the game遊戲 SuperBetter超好.
190
567540
2340
09:45
And soon不久 I started開始 hearing聽力 from people all over the world世界
191
569880
3073
09:48
who were adopting採用 their own擁有 secret秘密 identity身分,
192
572953
2611
09:51
recruiting招聘 their own擁有 allies盟國, and they were getting得到 "super better"
193
575564
3223
09:54
facing面對 challenges挑戰 like cancer癌症 and chronic慢性 pain疼痛,
194
578787
3698
09:58
depression蕭條 and Crohn's克羅恩 disease疾病.
195
582485
2422
10:00
Even people were playing播放 it for terminal終奌站 diagnoses診斷 like ALSALS.
196
584907
4537
10:05
And I could tell from their messages消息 and their videos視頻
197
589444
3641
10:08
that the game遊戲 was helping幫助 them in the same相同 ways方法
198
593085
2838
10:11
that it helped幫助 me.
199
595923
1032

10:55
The game遊戲 was helping幫助 us experience經驗

11:05
But scientists科學家們 now know that a traumatic創傷 event事件

11:08
doesn't doom厄運 us to suffer遭受 indefinitely無限期.

230
690591
5507
11:51
Now this is interesting有趣, right?
231
696098
1733
11:53
It seems似乎 that somehow不知何故, a traumatic創傷 event事件 can unlock開鎖 our ability能力
232
697831

11:58
to lead a life with fewer regrets遺憾.
233
702143
2648

12:12
That would be good, right?
239
716352
1560
12:13
I wanted to understand理解 the phenomenon現象 better,
240
717912
2399
12:16
so I devoured吞噬 the scientific科學 literature文學, and here's這裡的 what I learned學到了.
241
720311
3024
12:19
There are four kinds of strength強度, or resilience彈性,
242
723335
3408
12:22
that contribute有助於 to post-traumatic創傷後 growth發展,
243
726743
2768
12:25
and there are scientifically科學 validated驗證 activities活動
244
729511
2971
12:28
that you can do every一切 day to build建立 up these four kinds of resilience彈性,
245
732482
4121
12:32
and you don't need a trauma外傷 to do it.
246
736603
1989
12:34
Now, I could tell you what these four types類型 of strength強度 are,
247
738592
2208
12:36
but I'd rather you experience經驗 them firsthand第一手.
248
740800
2576
12:39
I'd rather we all start開始 building建造 them up together一起 right now.
249
743376
3072
12:42
So here's這裡的 what we're going to do.
250
746448
1336
12:43
We're going to play a quick game遊戲 together一起.
251
747784
1819
12:45
This is where you earn those seven and a half minutes
252
749603
2373

This is your first quest尋求. Here we go.
257
761630
3370
13:00
Pick one: Stand up and take three steps
258
765000
3096
13:03
or make your hands into fists拳頭, raise提高 them over your head
259
768096

13:08
All right, I like the people doing both. You are overachievers
261
772728
4544
13:13
Very good. (Laughter
262
777272
1993
13:15
Well doneDONE, everyone大家. Now that is worth價值 plus-one加一
263
779265
2160
13:17
physical物理 resilience彈性, which哪一個 means手段 that your body身體 can
264
781425
2551

withstand經受 more stress強調 and heal癒合 itself本身 faster更快.
265
783976
2661
13:22
Now we know from the research研究 that the number one thing
266
786637
2365
13:24
you can do to boost促進 your physical物理 resilience彈性 is to not sit still.
267
789002
