ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Andrew Bastawrous - Eye surgeon, inventor
Andrew Bastawrous studies eye health -- and builds accessible new tools to bring eye care to more people.

Why you should listen

Andrew Bastawrous is cofounder and CEO of Peek Vision, a social impact organization that uses smartphone technology to radically increase access to eye care in some of the most challenging places in the world. Bastawrous is also an ophthalmologist (eye surgeon) and Associate Professor in International Eye Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Peek's vision app, Peek Acuity, is being used to transform eye health in more than 150 countries. The organization ran one of the top-ten all-time Indiegogo crowd-funding campaigns in the health sector -- for Peek Retina, a smartphone ophthalmoscope -- and was voted "best social-impact start-up in Europe" by Google and McKinsey in 2016. All prize money has been re-invested in Peek.

Bastawrous is working with astrophysicists to crowdsource retinal data; with National Geographic explorers to reach isolated communities; and with artists and activists to advocate for eye care globally. He and his wife Madeleine have established a social enterprise healthy bakery in Kenya that provides employment, with profits paying for eye care.

In 2018, Bastawrous was invited to deliver the Commonwealth Address in the presence of the British Royal Family, where he announced the creation of a new one-billion-dollar Vision Catalyst Fund -- a new vision for international aid.

Andrew Bastawrous: A new way to fund health care for the most vulnerable

Filmed:

02:54
You see, I'd associated相關
an eye test測試 with wearing穿著 glasses眼鏡
53

04:58
That same相同 program程序 was replicated複製

05:03
Soon不久 we were able能夠 to repeat重複 this

05:06
in different不同 countries國家.
102
294055

05:08
But now, I was faced面對 with the very
same相同 problems問題 I had with Theresa有一個
103
296106
3918
05:12
of earmarked專項 funds資金,
104
300048
1788
05:13
but now as an organization組織.
105
301860
1799
05:16
People wanted to fund基金 specific具體 projects項目
106
304374
3396
05:19

05:24
But it didn't make sense,
109
312178
1595
05:25
because what we needed需要 to do
was build建立 an incredible難以置信 team球隊
110
313797
2680
05:28
who could create創建 the systems系統
that would change更改 the lives生活
111
316501
2713
05:31
of millions百萬 of people,
whatever隨你 their needs需求 were.
112
319238
2395
05:34
But it didn't work that way.
113
322385
1495
05:38
Soon不久, we were able能夠 to align對齊 ourselves我們自己
with partners夥伴 who understood了解,
114
326166
5023
05:43
because I understand理解 the challenge挑戰.
115
331213
2057
05:45
Ultimately最終,, you need to trust相信
where your money's錢的 going,
116
333294
3275
05:48
and that trust相信 usually平時 manifests艙單
through通過 the requirement需求
117
336593
2620
05:51
to create創建 detailed詳細 plans計劃 --
lots of paperwork證件.
118
339237
2451
05:53
But what happens發生
if the dynamic動態 needs需求 of people
119
341712
2340
05:56
don't fit適合 with the plan計劃 that you created創建,
120
344076
2042
05:58
and your funding資金 is dependent依賴的

121
346142
2929
06:01
You end結束 up with a choice選擇:

Do you serve服務 the plan計劃, the funder資助者,

06:05
or do you serve服務 the need?
124
353587
1411
06:07
This is not a choice選擇
we should have to make,
125
355482
2427
06:09
because ultimately最終,
we can only serve服務 one master.
126
