ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Kwame Anthony Appiah - Philosopher
Kwame Anthony Appiah is a philosopher, cultural theorist and novelist. His latest book is "The Honor Code," exploring moral revolutions.

Why you should listen

Kwame Anthony Appiah works on political and moral theory, the philosophy of language and mind, and African intellectual history. In his 2010 book The Honor Code, he explores a hidden engine of reform: appeals to honor. Examining moral revolutions in the past—and campaigns against abhorrent practices today—he shows that appeals to reason, morality, or religion aren’t enough to ring in reform.

He's the author of Lines of Descent, a thoughtful look at the career of sociologist W.E.B. DuBois, and Cosmopolitanism: Ethics in a World of Strangers, which studied "the powerful ties that connect people across religions, culture and nations … and of the deep conflicts within them." In 2008, Appiah published Experiments in Ethics, in which he reviews the relevance of empirical research to ethical theory. Appiah has also published several novels, including Avenging Angel, Nobody Likes Letitia and Another Death in Venice.

Il primo problema di questa definizione

is from a recentrecente novelromanzo by PaulPaolo BeattyBeatty calledchiamato "TuffTufo."
61

2740
viene da un recente romanzo
di Paul Beatty, "Tuff".
02:56
There's a guy talkingparlando to a rabbirabbino.
62

C'è un tizio che parla a un rabbino.
02:57
The rabbirabbino saysdice he doesn't believe in God.
63

Il rabbino dice che non crede in Dio.
03:00
The guy saysdice, "You're a rabbirabbino,
how can you not believe in God?"
64
168330
2430
Il tizio dice, "Sei un rabbino,
come fai a non credere in Dio?"
03:02
And the replyrispondere is, "It's what's
so great about beingessere JewishEbraico.
65

La risposta è: "È questa
la cosa meravigliosa dell'essere ebreo.
03:06
You don't have to believe in a God perper seSe,

03:10
So if this guy is a rabbirabbino, and a JewishEbraico rabbirabbino,
68

Se questo è un rabbino,
e un rabbino ebreo,
03:13

e se bisogna credere in Dio

allora arriviamo
alla conclusione controintuitiva

that sinceda it's possiblepossibile to be a JewishEbraico rabbirabbino

allora l'Ebraismo non è una religione.
03:26
That seemssembra like a prettybella counterintuitivecontrointuitivo thought.
