00:12
The first time I uttered a prayer
was in a glass-stained cathedral.
0

5549
A primeira vez que fiz uma prece
foi numa catedral com vitrais.
00:18
I was kneeling long after
the congregation was on its feet,
1
6403
3390
Continuei me ajoelhando após
a congregação ter-se levantado,
00:21
dip both hands into holy water,
2
9793
1910
mergulhei minhas mãos na água benta,
00:23
trace the trinity across my chest,
3
11703
1850
fiz o sinal da cruz no meu peito,
00:25
my tiny body drooping
like a question mark
4
13553
2826
meu pequeno corpo curvado
como um ponto de interrogação
00:28
all over the wooden pew.
5
16379
2290
cobrindo o banco de madeira.
00:30
I asked Jesus to fix me,
6
18669
2670
Pedi a Jesus que me endireitasse,
00:33
and when he did not answer
7
21339
2126
e quando ele não respondeu
00:35
I befriended silence in the hopes
that my sin would burn
8
23465
2676
amiguei-me com o silêncio,
à espera que meu pecado queimaria
00:38
and salve my mouth
9
26141
1490
e minha boca apaziguaria
00:39
would dissolve like sugar on tongue,
10
27631
1830
e dissolveria como açúcar na língua,
00:41
but shame lingered as an aftertaste.
11
29461
1915
mas a vergonha ficou
como um gosto intenso na boca.
00:43
And in an attempt
to reintroduce me to sanctity,
12
31376
3564
E, na tentativa
de me reintroduzir à santidade,
00:46
my mother told me of the miracle I was,
13
34940
2920
minha mãe me falou
que eu era um milagre,
00:49
said I could grow up
to be anything I want.
14
37860
3000
disse que eu podia ser
o que eu quisesse quando crescesse.
00:52
I decided to
15
40860
2206
Eu decidi
ser um garoto.
00:55
be a boy.
16
43066
1161
Era fofo.
00:56
It was cute.
17
44227

Eu tinha boné, sorriso desdentado,
00:57
I had snapback, toothless grin,
18
45217
1790
usava os joelhos esfolados
como barganha na rua,
00:59
used skinned knees as street cred,
19
47007
1840
brincava de esconder
com o que restava do meu sonho.
01:00
played hide and seek with
what was left of my goal.
20
48847
2430
Eu era isto.
01:03
I was it.
21
51277
927
O campeão do jogo que as outras crianças
não podiam jogar.
01:04
The winner to a game
the other kids couldn't play,
22
52204
2425
01:06
I was the mystery of an anatomy,
23
54629
2180
O mistério de uma anatomia,
uma pergunta sem resposta,
01:08
a question asked but not answered,
24
56809
1813
01:10
tightroping between awkward boy
and apologetic girl,
25
58622
4296
na corda bamba entre um menino desajeitado
e uma menina arrependida,
01:14
and when I turned 12, the boy phase
wasn't deemed cute anymore.
26
62918
4737
e quando fiz 12 anos,
a fase de menino deixou de ser fofa.
01:19
It was met with nostalgic aunts who missed
seeing my knees in the shadow of skirts,
27
67655
5642
Minhas tias sentiam nostalgia
dos meus joelhos quando eu usava saias,
01:25
who reminded me that my kind of attitude
would never bring a husband home,
28
73297
4249
o que me fazia lembrar que minha atitude
nunca traria um marido para casa,
01:29
that I exist for heterosexual marriage
and child-bearing.
29
77546
3622
que eu existo para
casamento heterossexual e ter filhos.
01:33
And I swallowed their insults
along with their slurs.
30
81168
3831
Engoli seus insultos e calúnias.
01:36
Naturally, I did not
come out of the closet.
31
84999
2717
Naturalmente, não sai do armário.
01:39
The kids at my school opened it
without my permission.
32
87716
2716
Meus amigos no colégio
o abriram sem minha permissão.
01:42
Called me by a name I did not recognize,
33
90432
2462
Me chamavam de um nome
que eu não reconhecia,
01:44
said "lesbian,"
34
92894
1230
diziam lésbica,
mas eu era mais menino que menina,
mais Ken do que Barbie.
01:46
but I was more boy than girl,
more Ken than Barbie.
35
94124
2576
01:48
It had nothing to do with hating my body,
36
96700
2203
Não tinha nada a ver
com eu odiando meu corpo,
01:50
I just love it enough to let it go,
37
98903
2120
eu simplesmente o amava tanto
que o libertei.
01:53
I treat it like a house,
38
101023
1386
Eu o trato como uma casa,
01:54
and when your house is falling apart,
39
102409
1830
e quando sua casa desmorona,
você não a abandona,
01:56
you do not evacuate,
40
104239
984
01:57
you make it comfortable enough
to house all your insides,
41
105223
3792
você a faz confortável o suficiente
para acomodar suas entranhas,
02:01
you make it pretty enough
to invite guests over,
42
109015
2361
a faz atraente o suficiente
para receber hóspedes,
02:03
you make the floorboards
strong enough to stand on.
43
111376
3858
você faz com que o piso do chão
seja bem firme para ficar de pé.
Minha mãe teme que escolhi
um nome de coisas desbotadas.
02:07
My mother fears I have named
myself after fading things.
44
115904

Enquanto ela conta os ecos
deixados por Mya Hall,
02:12
As she counts the echoes

Leelah Alcorn, Blake Brockington.

She fears that I'll die without a whisper,
47
126489

Ela receia que morrerei sem um sussurro,
02:20
that I'll turn into "what a shame"
conversations at the bus stop.
48
128700
3063
que me tornarei um "Ah, que pena!"
nas conversas do ponto de ônibus.
02:23
She claims I have turned myself
into a mausoleum,
49
131763
2646
Ela alega que me tornei um mausoléu,
02:26
that I am a walking casket,
50
134409
1626
que sou um caixão ambulante.
02:28
news headlines have turned
my identity into a spectacle,
51
136035
3204
As manchetes de jornais fizeram
da minha identidade um espetáculo;
02:31
Bruce Jenner on everyone's lips
while the brutality of living in this body
52
139239
3756
todo mundo fala sobre Bruce Jenner
enquanto que a vida brutal em seu corpo
02:34
becomes an asterisk
at the bottom of equality pages.
53
142995
3546
torna-se um asterisco
no final da páginas de igualdade.
02:38
No one ever thinks of us as human
54
146541
3096
Ninguém pensa sobre nós como humanos
porque somos mais aparições do que carne,
02:41
because we are more ghost than flesh,
55
149637
2158
porque as pessoas temem
que a expressão do meu sexo é um truque,
02:43
because people fear that
my gender expression is a trick,
56
151795
2699
02:46
that it exists to be perverse,
57
154494
1857
que existe para ser perverso.
02:48
that it ensnares them
without their consent,
58
156351
2043
que isto os prende sem seu consentimento,
02:50
that my body is a feast
for their eyes and hands
59
158394
2694
que meu corpo é um banquete
para seus olhos e mãos,
e, uma vez que se alimentem
da minha estranheza,
02:53
and once they have fed off my queer,
60
161088
2299
02:55
they'll regurgitate all the parts
they did not like.
61
163387
3000
eles regurgitam todas as partes
que não gostaram.
02:58
They'll put me back into the closet,
hang me with all the other skeletons.
62
166387
4360
Colocam-me de volta no armário
e me penduram com os outros esqueletos.
03:02
I will be the best attraction.
63
170747
2415
Vou ser a melhor atração.
03:05
Can you see how easy it is
to talk people into coffins,
64
173162
3079
Estão vendo como é fácil
empurrar as pessoas aos caixões,
03:08
to misspell their names on gravestones.
65
176241
2570
escrever errado seus nomes nos túmulos?
E as pessoas ainda se perguntam
por que há garotos se decompondo.
03:10
And people still wonder why
there are boys rotting,
66
178811
2455
03:13
they go away
in high school hallways
67
181266
2391
Eles se vão, nos corredores dos colégios
03:15
they are afraid of becoming another
hashtag in a second
68
183657
2902
temem que vão se tornar
um outro 'hashtag' em segundos,
03:18
afraid of classroom discussions
becoming like judgment day
69
186559
3878
com medo que discussões na sala de aula
virem um tipo de julgamento final
03:22
and now oncoming traffic is embracing
more transgender children than parents.
70
190437
5735
e, agora,
o tráfego em sentido oposto abraça
crianças transexuais mais que seus pais.
Eu me pergunto quanto tempo levará
03:29
I wonder how long it will be
71
197062
1745
03:30
before the trans suicide notes
start to feel redundant,
72
198807
3680
para que as cartas de suicídio
dos transexuais tornem-se desnecessárias,
03:34
before we realize that our bodies
become lessons about sin
73
202487
3623
antes que se perceba que nossos corpos
se tornam lições sobre o pecado
03:38
way before we learn how to love them.
74
206110
2043
muito antes de aprendermos a amá-los.
03:40
Like God didn't save
all this breath and mercy,
75
208153
3924
Como Deus não salvou
toda esta respiração e misericórdia,
03:44
like my blood is not the wine
that washed over Jesus' feet.
76
212077
3576
como meu sangue não é o vinho
que lavou os pés de Jesus.
03:47
My prayers are now
getting stuck in my throat.
77
215653
3868
Minhas preces estão agora
presas na minha garganta.
Talvez eu finalmente esteja endireitado,
03:52
Maybe I am finally fixed,
78
220041
3134
03:55
maybe I just don't care,
79
223175
2253
talvez eu não ligue mais,
03:57
maybe God finally listened to my prayers.
80
225428
4711
talvez Deus finalmente
ouviu minhas preces.
04:02
Thank you.

Obrigado.
