ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Charles Anderson - Marine biologist
Charles Anderson studies marine life in the Maldives, a nation of coral atolls in the Indian ocean.

Why you should listen

Since 1983, Charles Anderson has lived and worked in the Maldives, a group of more than 1,000 coral islands that is the world's lowest-lying country. Marine life here is rich and fascinating, and Anderson has been instrumental in identifying it and promoting its preservation. This year, the Maldives became the first nation to ban shark fishing, after recognizing that the decline in live sharks was impacting the lucrative tourist trade.

Anderson has discovered several new species of fish, and was awarded the President of Maldives Award for Service to Fisheries in 1995, the only non-Maldivian ever to receive this honor. He and his wife, Susan, run several whale-watching trips each year where tourists take part in a national survey of cetaceans (whales and dolphins). recently, Anderson has identified the world's longest insect migration: the 18,000 km flight of tiny Pantala flavescens dragonflies back and forth across the Indian Ocean. He has found that the migration begins in India and proceeds via the Maldives (a mystifying stopover, because freshwater is scarce on these low-lying atolls) and the Seychelles -- and then all the way to East Africa.

Charles Anderson: Dragonflies that fly across oceans

Charles Anderson descopera libelule care traverseaza oceane

Filmed:

In timp ce locuia si lucra in calitate de biolog marin in Insulele Maldive, Charles Anderson a observat "explozii" neasteptate de libelule in anumite perioade ale anului. El explica modul in care urmarit drumul parcurs de o libelula mica, numita "globe skimmer", descoperind ca are cea mai lunga migratie dintre toate insectele din lume.

I need to explainexplica a little bitpic about monsoonsmusoni.
30
72000
2000
Trebuie sa va explic putin despre musoni.
01:29
Now, monsoonmuson, the rootrădăcină of the wordcuvânt "monsoonmuson"
31
74000
2000
Musonul, baza cuvantului "muson"
01:31
comesvine from the wordcuvânt "seasonsezon."
32
76000
2000
provine din cuvantul "anotimp".
01:33
So, it's just a seasonsezon. And there are two seasonssezoane in mostcel mai of SouthSud AsiaAsia.
33
78000
5000
01:38
And in the summervară IndiaIndia heatsincalzeste up, getsdevine very hotFierbinte.

And the way it workslucrări is, it comesvine from the southwestsud-vest.
36

01:47
It comesvine off the oceanocean here and is drawndesenat up towardscătre IndiaIndia.
37
92000
3000
Vine dinspre ocean aici si este atras spre India.
01:50
So it comesvine from the southwestsud-vest. It's a southwestsud-vest monsoonmuson.
38
95000
3000
Deci vine din sud-vest. Este un muson sud-vestic.

That's what bringsaduce the monsoonmuson rainploaie.

Acest lucru aduce ploaia musonica.
01:57

02:04
So, the windvânt is now comingvenire from the northeastNord-Est

02:13
Now, I'm a marinemarină biologistbiolog, but I'm actuallyde fapt

Eu sunt un biolog marin. Dar in realitate

02:19
includinginclusiv dragonflieslibelule. And I'm actuallyde fapt
51
124000
2000
inclusiv libelule. Si, de fapt,
02:21
going to talk, this afternoondupa amiaza, about dragonflieslibelule.
52
126000
2000
voi vorbi in aceasta dupa-amiaza despre libelule.
02:23
This is a very beautifulfrumoasa speciesspecie, it's calleddenumit the OrientalOriental ScarletStacojiu.
53
128000
3000
Aceasta este o specie foarte frumoasa, numita "Oriental Scarlet".
02:26
And one thing you need to know about dragonflieslibelule,
54
131000
2000
02:28
one importantimportant thing,
55
133000
2000
un lucru foarte important,
02:30
is that they laypune theiral lor eggsouă in freshproaspăt waterapă.
56
135000
2000
este ca isi depun ouale in apa proaspata.
02:32
They need freshproaspăt waterapă to breedrasă.
57
137000
2000
02:34
They laypune the eggsouă into freshproaspăt waterapă.
58
139000
2000
Isi depun ouale in apa proaspata.
02:36
Little larvaeLarvele hatchtrapa out in freshproaspăt waterapă.
59
141000
2000
Larve micute eclozeaza in apa proaspata.
02:38
They feeda hrani on other little things. They feeda hrani on mosquitoţânţar larvaeLarvele.
60
143000
3000
Ele se hranesc cu alte lucruri mici. Se hranesc cu larve de tantari.
02:41
So, they're very importantimportant.
61
146000
2000
Asadar sunt foarte importante.
02:43
They controlControl mosquitoţânţar larvaeLarvele, amongprintre other things.
62
148000
2000
Ele controleaza numarul larvelor de tantari, printre altele.
02:45
And they growcrește and growcrește by stagesetape. And they climba urca out
63
150000
3000
Si cresc in etape. Si ies
02:48
of the waterapă, burstizbucni out, as the adultadult whichcare we see.
64
153000
2000
02:50
And typicallytipic, there is a lot of variationvariaţia,
65
155000
2000
Si in mod tipic, exista multa variatie,
02:52
but if you have a dragonflyDragonfly with, say, a one yearan life cycleciclu,
66
157000
3000
02:55
whichcare is quitedestul de typicaltipic, the larvalarva, livingviaţă in the freshproaspăt waterapă,
67
160000
3000
02:58
livesvieți for 10 or 11 monthsluni.
68
163000
3000
traieste timp de 10 sau 11 luni.
03:01
And then the adultadult, whichcare comesvine after, livesvieți for one or two monthsluni.
69
166000
3000
03:04
So it's essentiallyin esenta a freshwaterapă dulce animalanimal.
70
169000
2000
03:06
It really does need freshproaspăt waterapă.
71
171000
3000
Chiar are nevoie de apa proaspata.
03:09
Now, the particularspecial speciesspecie of dragonflyDragonfly
72
174000
2000
Specia de libelule
03:11
I want to talk about is this one,
73
176000
2000
despre care vreau sa vorbesc este aceasta,
03:13
because mostcel mai dragonflieslibelule, like the one we'vene-am just seenvăzut,
74
178000
3000
03:16
when the adultadult is there for its briefscurt one or two monthsluni of life,
75
181000
2000
03:18
it doesn't go very fardeparte. It can't travelvoiaj very fardeparte.
76
183000
3000
nu calatoreste prea departe. Nu poate calatori prea departe.
03:21
A fewpuțini kilometerskilometri, maybe, is quitedestul de typicaltipic.
77
186000
2000
Cativa kilometri, poate, este o distanta tipica.
03:23
They are very good flierspliante, but they don't go too fardeparte.
78
188000
3000
03:26
But this guy is an exceptionexcepție.
79
191000
2000
Dar aceasta specie este o exceptie.
03:28
And this is calleddenumit the GlobeGlob SkimmerSeparator,

03:32
And, as the nameNume mightar putea suggestsugera, it is foundgăsite prettyfrumos much around the worldlume.
82

Si calatoreste in lung si-n lat. Acest lucru in stim cu certitudine.
03:43
But it really hasn'tnu are been studiedstudiat very much.
86

03:45
It's a rathermai degraba mediocremediocru looking dragonflyDragonfly.

03:55
This is, it seemspare a bitpic dullplictisitor you know.
90
220000
3000
Specia aceasta este putin neinteresanta.
03:58
It's sortfel of dull-coloredmat de culoare. And it's fairlydestul de commoncomun.
91
223000
3000
Este mediocru colorata. Si este destul de comuna.
04:01

OctoberOctombrie, NovemberNoiembrie, DecemberDecembrie. That is not the northeastNord-Est monsoonmuson seasonsezon.
208

08:34
That's not the southwestsud-vest seasonsezon.
209
499000
2000
Nu este sezonul musonului de sud-vest.
08:36
That's the inter-monsoonmuson inter,
210
501000
2000
Este sezonul inter-musonic,
08:38
the time when the monsoonmuson changesschimbări.
211
503000
2000
perioada in care musonul se schimba.
08:40
Now, what I said was, you get the southwestsud-vest monsoonmuson going one way,
212
505000
3000
08:43
and then it changesschimbări and you get the northeastNord-Est monsoonmuson going the other way.
213
508000
4000
08:47
And that sortfel of gives the impressionimpresie you've got one airaer massmasa
214
512000
2000
08:49

215
514000
2000
care circula in sus si in jos. Nu asa functioneaza.
08:51
What happensse întâmplă, actuallyde fapt, is there is two airaer massesmasele.
216
516000
2000
08:53
And there is a frontfață betweenîntre them, and the frontfață movesmișcări.
217
518000
3000
08:56
So, if you've got IndiaIndia here,
218
521000
2000
Asa ca daca avem India aici,
08:58
when the frontfață is up abovede mai sus IndiaIndia you're into the southwestsud-vest monsoonmuson.
219
523000
2000
cand frontul este deasupra Indiei suntem in sezonul musonului de sud-vest.
09:00
Then the frontfață movesmișcări into the northeastNord-Est monsoonmuson.
220
525000
4000
09:04
And that frontfață in the middlemijloc is not verticalvertical,
221
529000
2000
Iar frontul din mijloc nu este vertical,
09:06
it's at an angleunghi.
222
531000
2000
ci sub un unghi.
09:08
So, as it comesvine over towardscătre MalMalé
223
533000
2000
Asa ca atunci cand ajunge inspre Male
09:10
I'm standingpermanent in MalMalé underneathdedesubt the frontfață.
224
535000
3000
stau in Male sub front.
09:13
I can be in the southwestsud-vest monsoonmuson.
225
538000
2000
Pot fi in musonul de sud-vest.
09:15
But the windvânt abovede mai sus is from the northeastNord-Est monsoonmuson.
226
540000
2000
09:17
So, the dragonflieslibelule are actuallyde fapt comingvenire from IndiaIndia on the northeastNord-Est monsoonmuson,
227
542000
3000
09:20
but at an altitudealtitudine at 1,000 to 2,000 metersmetri up in the airaer. IncredibleIncredibil.
