ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Larry Burns - Automotive researcher
Larry Burns is the vice president of R&D for GM. His job? Find a new way to power cars.

Why you should listen

Larry Burns is on a mission: to reinvent the automobile using nonpolluting hydrogen fuel cells. As the vice president of R&D and strategic planning at GM, he's one of the people who will be called on to lead the US auto industry into its next incarnation.

Burns has been a persistent advocate of hydrogen power and other advanced propulsion and materials technologies for cars. His thinking is, the industry can keep making small energy improvements in the current cars it makes -- or it can take a big leap forward to build a whole new kind of car.

2000
00:30
Prince王子 wrote a great song歌曲: "Little Red Corvette克爾維特."
6
12000
2000
00:33
He didn't write "Little Red Laptop筆記本電腦 Computer電腦" or "Little Red Dirt污垢 Devil魔鬼."
7
15000
3000
00:36
He wrote about a car
8
18000
1000
00:37
And one of my favorites最愛 has always been,
9
19000
2000
00:39
"Make love to your man in a Chevy煩擾 van麵包車,"
10
21000
2000
00:41
because that was my vehicle車輛 when I was in college學院.
11
23000
3000
00:44
The fact事實 is, when we do our market市場 research研究 around the world世界,
12
26000
3000
00:47
we see that there's nearly幾乎 a universal普遍 aspiration心願 on the part部分 of people
13
29000
4000
00:51
to own擁有 an automobile汽車.
14
33000
2000
00:53
And 750 million百萬 people in the world世界 today今天 own擁有 a car汽車.
15
35000
4000
00:57
And you say, boy男孩, that's a lot.
16
39000
1000
00:59
But you know what?
17
41000
1000
01:00
That's just 12 percent百分 of the population人口.
18
42000
2000
01:02
We really have to ask the question:
19
44000
2000
01:04
Can the world世界 sustain支持 that number of automobiles汽車?
20
46000
3000
01:07
And if you look at projections預測 over the next下一個 10 to 15 to 20 years年份,
21
49000
4000
01:11
it looks容貌 like the world世界 car汽車 park公園 could grow增長 to on the order訂購 of 1.1 billion十億 vehicles汽車.
22
53000
6000
01:17
Now, if you parked those end結束 to end結束
23
59000
2000
01:19
and wrapped包裹 them around the Earth地球,
24
61000
2000
01:21
that would stretch伸展 around the Earth地球 125 times.
25
63000
3000
01:25
Now, we've我們已經 made製作 great progress進展 with automobile汽車 technology技術 over the last 100 years年份.
26
67000
4000
01:29
Cars汽車 are dramatically顯著 cleaner清潔器, dramatically顯著 safer更安全, more efficient高效
27
71000
4000
01:33
and radically根本 more affordable實惠 than they were 100 years年份 ago.
28
75000
3000
01:37
But the fact事實 remains遺跡:
29
79000
2000
01:39
the fundamental基本的 DNA脫氧核糖核酸 of the automobile汽車 has stayed pretty漂亮 much the same相同.
30
81000
4000
01:43
If we are going to reinvent重塑 the automobile汽車 today今天, rather than 100 years年份 ago,
31
85000
5000
01:48
knowing會心 what we know about the issues問題 associated相關 with our product產品
32
90000
3000
01:51
and about the technologies技術 that exist存在 today今天,
33
93000
2000
01:53
what would we do?
34
95000
2000
01:55
We wanted something that was really affordable
35
97000
2000
01:57
The fuel汽油 cell細胞 looked看著 great:
36
99000
1000
01:59
one-tenth十分之一 as many許多 moving移動 parts部分
37
101000
2000
02:01
and a fuel-cell燃料電池 propulsion動力 system系統 as an internal內部 combustion燃燒 engine發動機 --
38
103000
3000
02:04
and it emits發射 just water.
39
106000
1000
02:05
And we wanted to take advantage優點 of Moore's摩爾定律 Law
40
107000
1000
02:07
with electronic電子 controls控制 and software軟件,
41
109000
2000
02:09
and we absolutely絕對 wanted our car汽車 to be connected連接的.
42
111000
3000
02:12
So we embarked開始 upon the reinvention再造
43
114000
2000
02:14
around an electrochemical電化學 engine發動機,
44
116000
2000
02:16
the fuel汽油 cell細胞, hydrogen as the energy能源 carrier支架.
45
118000
4000
02:20
First was Autonomy自治.
46
122000
1000
02:21
Autonomy自治 really set the vision視力 for where we wanted to head.
47
123000
3000
Autonomy
02:24
We embodied體現 all of the key components組件 of a fuel汽油 cell細胞 propulsion動力 system系統.
48
126000
4000
02:28
We then had Autonomy自治 drivable驅動 with Hy-Wire海蘭線,
49
130000
2000
02:31
and we showed顯示 Hy-Wire海蘭線 here at this conference會議 last year.
50
133000
3000
Hy-Wire
02:34
Hy-Wire海蘭線 is the world's世界 first drivable驅動 fuel汽油 cell細胞,
51
136000
3000
Hy-Wire
02:37
and we have followed其次 up that now with Sequel續集.
52
139000
3000
02:40
And Sequel續集 truly is a real真實 car汽車.
53
142000
2000
02:42
So if we would run the video
54
144000
1000
04:11
But the real真實 key question I'm sure that's on your mind心神:
55
233000
2000
04:13
where's哪裡 the hydrogen going to come from?
56
235000
1000
04:15
And secondly其次, when are these kinds of cars汽車 going to be available可得到?
57
237000
3000
04:19
So let me talk about hydrogen first.
58
241000
1000
04:21
The beauty美女 of hydrogen is it can come from so many許多 different不同 sources來源:
59
243000
3000
04:24
it can come from fossil化石 fuels燃料,
60
246000
2000
04:26
it can come from any way that you can create創建 electricity電力,
61
248000
3000
04:31
And it can come from biofuels
04:32
And that's quite相當 exciting扣人心弦.
64
254000
1000
04:34
The vision視力 here is
65
256000
1000
04:35
to have each local本地 community社區
66
257000
2000
04:37
play to its natural自然 strength強度
67
259000
1000
04:38
in creating創建 the hydrogen.
68
260000
1000
04:40
A lot of hydrogen's氫的 produced生成 today今天 in the world世界.
69
262000
2000
04:42
It's produced生成 to get sulfur out of gasoline汽油
70
264000
2000
04:44
-- which哪一個 I find is somewhat有些 ironic具有諷刺意味.
71
266000
2000
04:46
It's produced生成 in the fertilizer肥料 industry行業;
72
268000
3000
04:49
it's produced生成 in the chemical化學 manufacturing製造業 industry行業.
73
271000
3000
04:52
That hydrogen's氫的 being存在 made製作 because
74
274000
2000
04:54
there's a good business商業 reason原因 for its use.
75
276000
2000
04:57
But it tells告訴 us that we know how to create創建 it,
76
279000
1000
04:58
we know how to create創建 it cost成本 effectively有效,
77
280000
3000
05:01
we know how to handle處理 it safely安然.
78
283000
2000
05:04
We did an analysis分析
79
286000
1000
05:05
where you would have a station in each city
80
287000
2000
05:07
with each of the 100 largest最大 cities城市 in the United聯合的 States狀態,
81
289000
3000
05:10
and located位於 the stations
82
292000
2000
05:12
so you'd be no more than two miles英里 from a station at any time.
83
294000
2000
05:15
We put one every一切 25 miles英里 on the freeway高速公路,
84
297000
2000
05:17
and it turns out that translates轉換 into about 12,000 stations.
85
299000
4000
05:22
And at a million百萬 dollars美元 each,
86
304000
1000
05:23
that would be about 12 billion十億 dollars美元.
87
305000
1000
05:24
Now that's a lot of money.
88
306000
1000
05:26
But if you built內置 the Alaskan阿拉斯加 pipeline管道 today今天,
89
308000
2000
05:28
that's half of what the Alaskan阿拉斯加 pipeline管道 would cost成本.
90
310000
3000
05:31
But the real真實 exciting扣人心弦 vision視力 that we see truly is home refueling加油,
91
313000
4000
05:36
much like recharging充電 your laptop筆記本電腦 or recharging充電 your cellphone手機.
92
318000
3000
05:39
So we're pretty漂亮 excited興奮 about the future未來 of hydrogen.
93
321000
3000
05:42
We think it's a question of not whether是否, but a question of when.
94
324000
4000
05:46
What we've我們已經 targeted針對 for ourselves我們自己
95
328000
2000
05:48
-- and we're making製造 great progress進展 for this goal目標 --
96
330000
2000
05:50
is to have a propulsion動力 system系統
97
332000
2000
05:52
based基於 on hydrogen and fuel汽油 cells細胞,
98
334000
2000
05:54
designed設計 and validated驗證,
99
336000
1000
05:56
that can go head-to-head頭對頭 with the internal內部 combustion燃燒 engine發動機 --
100
338000
2000
05:58
we're talking about obsoletingobsoleting the internal內部 combustion燃燒 engine發動機 --
101
340000
3000
06:01
and do it in terms條款 of its affordability承受能力,
102
343000
3000
06:04
add skill技能 volumes, its performance性能 and its durability耐久力.
103
346000
3000
06:07
So that's what we're driving主動 to for 2010.
104
349000
3000
06:10
We haven't沒有 seen看到 anything yet然而 in our development發展 work
105
352000
2000
06:12
that says that isn't possible可能.
106
354000
2000
06:14
We actually其實 think the future's期貨 going to be event-driven事件驅動.
107
356000
3000
06:17
So since以來 we can't predict預測 the future未來,
108
359000
2000
06:19
we want to spend a lot of our time
109
361000
1000
06:20
trying to create創建 that future未來.
110
362000
2000
06:22
I'm very, very intrigued好奇 by the fact事實 that our cars汽車 and trucks卡車
111
364000
4000
06:26
sit idle 90 percent百分 of the time:
112
368000
2000
06:28
they're parked, they're parked all around us.
113
370000
2000
06:30
They're usually平時 parked within 100 feet of the people that own擁有 them.
114
372000
4000
06:34
Now, if you take the power-generating發電 capability能力 of an automobile汽車
115
376000
3000
06:37
and you compare比較 that to the electric電動 grid in the United聯合的 States狀態,
116
379000
4000
06:41
it turns out that four percent百分 of the automobiles汽車, the power功率 in four percent百分 of the automobiles汽車,
117
383000
4000
06:45
equals等於 that of the electric電動 grid of the US.
118
387000
3000
06:48
that's a huge巨大 power-generating發電 capability能力,
119
390000
3000
06:51
a mobile移動 power-generating發電 capability能力.
120
393000
2000
06:53
And hydrogen and fuel汽油 cells細胞 give us that opportunity機會
121
395000
3000
06:56
to actually其實 use our cars汽車 and trucks卡車 when they're parked
122
398000
3000
06:59
to generate生成 electricity電力 for the grid.
123
401000
2000
07:01
And we talked about swarm一群 networks網絡 earlier.
124
403000
2000
07:03
And talking about the ultimate最終 swarm一群, about having all of the processors處理器
125
405000
3000
07:06
and all of the cars汽車 when they're sitting坐在 idle
126
408000
2000
07:08
being存在 part部分 of a global全球 grid for computing計算 capability能力.
127
410000
4000
07:12
We find that premise前提 quite相當 exciting扣人心弦.
128
414000
2000
07:14
The automobile汽車 becomes, then, an appliance器具,
129
416000
3000
07:17
not in a commodity商品 sense,
130
419000
1000
07:18
but an appliance器具, mobile移動 power功率, mobile移動 platform平台
131
420000
3000
07:21
for information信息 and computing計算 and communication通訊,
132
423000
3000
07:24
as well as a form形成 of transportation運輸.
133
426000
2000
07:26
And the key to all of this is to make it affordable
134
428000
3000
07:29
to make it exciting扣人心弦,
135
431000
1000
07:30
to get it on a pathway where there's a way to make money doing it.
136
432000
2000
07:33
And again, this is a pretty漂亮 big march遊行 to take here.
137
435000
3000
07:36
And a lot of people say,
138
438000
1000
07:37
how do you sleep睡覺 at night when you're rustling沙沙 with a problem問題 of that magnitude大小?
139
439000
3000
