ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Jehane Noujaim - Filmmaker
TED Prize winner Jehane Noujaim is a gutsy filmmaker whose astonishing documentaries reveal the triumphs and hardships of courageous individuals.

Why you should listen

Two weeks before the US invaded Iraq in 2003, Jehane Noujaim gained access to both Al Jazeera and the US military's Central Command offices in Qatar. By being in the right place at that very wrong time, she caught the onset and outbreak of the Iraq war on film. The resulting documentary, Control Room (2004), exposed the very divergent ways the Middle East and the West covered the war. Since then, Noujaim has continued to document the Middle East, lending a personal eye to the world's most startling current events. Her film The Square (2013), which premiered at Sundance and was shown on Netflix, give viewers an intimate look at the personal stories and cultural complexities of the 2011 Egyptian revolution.

Raised between Egypt and the US, the exploration of culture is one of Jehane's driving forces. So is creating empathy and compassion through film. With the 2006 TED Prize, Noujaim wished for Pangea Day, a moment for people around the world come together to watch films and understand one another through their magic. Pangea Day took place in May 2008 and united people across 100 cities and online through a worldwide festival of film, music, art, performance and speakers.

01:04
But I really do think it makes品牌 sense,
14
40000
5000
01:09
and I think that the first step to world世界 peace和平 is for people to meet遇到 each other.

That's great. That's great.

太好了
01:37
So basically基本上 what I'd like to talk about today今天
26
73000
5000
01:42
is a way for people to travel旅行,
27
78000
3000
01:45
to meet遇到 people in a different不同 way than --
28
81000
4000
01:49
because you can't travel旅行 all over the world世界 at the same相同 time.
29

01:52
And a long time ago -- well, about 40 years年份 ago --

02:22
Now I really think as the world世界 is getting得到 smaller,
38
118000
2000
02:24
it becomes more and more important重要 that we learn學習 each other's其他 dance舞蹈 moves移動,
39
120000
3000
02:27
that we meet遇到 each other, we get to know each other,
40
123000
2000
02:29
we are able能夠 to figure數字 out a way to cross交叉 borders國界,
41
125000
4000
02:33
to understand理解 each other, to understand理解 people's人們 hopes希望 and dreams,
42
129000
3000
02:36
what makes品牌 them laugh and cry.
43
132000
2000
02:38
And I know that we can't all do exchange交換 programs程式,
44
134000
3000
02:41
and I can't force everybody每個人 to travel旅行.
45
137000
2000
02:43
I've already已經 talked about that to Chris克里斯 and Amy艾米,
46
139000
2000
02:45
and they said that there's a problem問題 with this.
47
141000
2000
02:47
You can't force people of free自由 will, and I totally完全 support支持 that. (Laughter笑聲)
48
143000
3000
02:50
So we're not forcing迫使 people to travel旅行.
49
146000
2000
02:52
But I'd like to talk about another另一個 way to travel旅行
50
148000
2000
02:54
that doesn't require要求 a ship or an airplane飛機,
51
150000
4000
02:58
and just requires要求 a movie電影 camera相機, a projector放映機 and a screen屏幕.
52
154000
5000
03:03
And that's what I'm going to talk to you about today今天.
53
159000
5000
03:08
I was asked that I speak說話 a little bit
54
164000
2000
03:10
about where I personally親自 come from,
55
166000
2000
03:12
and Cameron卡梅倫, I don't know how you managed管理 to get out of that one,
56
168000
3000
03:15
but I think that building建造 bridges橋樑 is important重要 to me
57
171000
5000
03:20
because of where I come from.
58
176000
2000
03:22
I'm the daughter女兒 of an American美國 mother母親
59
178000
3000
03:25
and an Egyptian-Lebanese-Syrian埃及黎巴嫩 - 敘利亞 father父親.
60
181000
3000
03:28
So I'm the living活的 product產品 of two cultures文化 coming未來 together一起.
61
184000
5000
03:33
No pun雙關語 intended.
62
189000
1000
03:34
And I've also been called --
63
190000
1000
03:35
as an Egyptian-Lebanese-Syrian埃及黎巴嫩 - 敘利亞 American美國 with a Persian波斯語 name名稱 --

03:39
the "Middle中間 East Peace和平 Crisis危機."
65
195000
2000
03:41
So maybe me starting開始 to take pictures圖片 was some kind of way
66
197000
4000
03:45
to bring帶來 both sides雙方 of my family家庭 together一起,
67
201000
4000
03:49
a way to take the worlds世界 with me, a way to tell stories故事 visually視覺.
68
205000
4000
03:54
It all kind of started開始 that way,
69
210000
2000
03:56
but I think that I really realized實現 the power功率 of the image圖片
70
212000
3000
03:59
when I first went to the garbage-collecting垃圾收集 village in Egypt埃及,
71
215000
4000
04:03
when I was about 16. My mother母親 took me there.
72
219000
4000
04:08
She's somebody that believes相信 strongly非常 in community社區 service服務
73
224000
2000
04:10
and decided決定 that this was something that I needed需要 to do
74
226000
2000
04:12
and so I went there and I met會見 some amazing驚人 women婦女 there.
75
228000
5000
04:17
There was a center中央 there
76
233000
3000
04:20
where they were teaching教學 people how to read and write
77
236000
2000
04:23
and get vaccinations接種疫苗 against反對 the many許多 diseases疾病
78
239000
2000
04:25
you can get from sorting排序 through通過 garbage垃圾.
79
241000
2000
04:27
And I began開始 to start開始 teaching教學 there.
80
243000
2000
04:29
I taught English英語, and I met會見 some incredible難以置信 women婦女 there.
81
245000
3000
04:32
I met會見 people that live生活 seven people to a room房間,
82
248000
5000
04:37
barely僅僅 can afford給予 their evening晚間 meal膳食,
83
253000
2000
04:39
yet然而 live生活 with this strength強度 of spirit精神 and sense of humor幽默
84
255000
3000
04:42
and just incredible難以置信 qualities氣質.
85
258000
3000
04:45
I got drawn into this community社區 and I began開始 to take pictures圖片 there.
86
261000
4000
04:49
I took pictures圖片 of weddings婚禮 and older舊的 family家庭 members會員,
87
265000
7000
04:56
things that they wanted memories回憶 of.
88
272000
2000
04:59
About two years年份 after I started開始 taking服用 these pictures圖片,

05:03
the UN聯合國 Conference會議 on Population人口 and Development發展

279000
4000
05:07
asked me to show顯示 them at the conference會議.
91
283000
3000
05:10
So I was 18; I was very excited
92
286000
3000
05:13
It was my first exhibit展示 of photographs照片 and they were all put up there,
93
289000
5000
05:18
and after about two days, they all came來了 down except for three.
94
294000
6000
05:24
People were very upset煩亂, very angry憤怒
95
300000
3000
05:27
that I was showing展示 these dirty sides雙方 of Cairo開羅,
96
303000
3000
05:30
and why didn't I cut the dead donkey out of the frame?
97
306000
4000
05:34
And as I satSAT there, I got very depressed
98
310000
2000
05:36
I looked看著 at this big empty wall with
99
312000
4000
05:40
three lonely孤獨 photographs照片 that were, you know,
100
316000
2000
05:42
very pretty漂亮 photographs照片 and I was like, I failed失敗 at this.
101
318000
6000
05:48
But I was looking at this intense激烈 emotion情感 and intense激烈 feeling感覺
102
324000
6000
05:54
that had come out of people just seeing眼看 these photographs照片.
103
330000
3000
05:57
I mean, here I was, this 18-year-old-歲 pipsqueak矮小的人 that nobody沒有人 listened聽了 to,
104
333000
3000
06:00
and all of a sudden突然 I put these photographs照片 on the wall
105
336000
3000
06:03
and there were arguments參數, and they had to be taken採取 down.
106
339000
2000
06:05
And I just saw the power功率 of the image圖片.
107
341000
2000
06:07
And it was incredible
06:09
And I think the most important重要 reaction反應 that I saw there
109
345000
3000
06:12
was actually其實 people that would never have gone走了 to the garbage垃圾 village themselves他們自己,
110
348000
3000
06:15
that would never have seen看到 that the human人的 spirit精神 could thrive興旺
111
351000
4000
06:19
in such這樣 difficult circumstances情況.
112
355000
2000
06:21
And I think it was at that point that I decided決定
113
357000
2000
06:23
that I wanted to use photography攝影 and film電影
114
359000
4000
06:27
to somehow不知何故 bridge gaps空白, to bridge cultures文化, bring帶來 people together一起, cross交叉 borders國界.
115
363000
5000
06:32
And so that's what really kind of started開始 me off.
116
368000
6000
06:38
Did a stint限制 at MTVMTV, made製作 a film電影 called "Startup啟動.comCOM,"
117
374000
4000
後來在MTV工作,作了部Startup.com的影片
06:42
and I've doneDONE a couple一對 of music音樂 films影片 --
118
378000
4000
06:46
but in 2003, when the war戰爭 in Iraq伊拉克 was about to start開始,
119
382000
4000
06:50
it was a very surreal超現實主義 feeling感覺 for me
120
386000
6000
06:56
because before the war戰爭 started開始, there was kind of this media媒體 war戰爭 that was going on.
121
392000
4000
07:00
And I was watching觀看 television電視 in New York紐約
122
396000
2000
07:02
and there seemed似乎 to be just one point of view視圖
123
398000
2000
07:04
that was coming未來 across橫過, and
124
400000
3000
07:07
the coverage覆蓋 went from the U.S. State Department to embedded嵌入式 troops軍隊
125
403000
5000
07:12
and what was coming未來 across橫過 on the news新聞
126
408000
4000
07:16
was that there was going to be this clean清潔 war戰爭 and precision精確 bombings爆炸,
127
412000
4000
07:20
and the Iraqis伊拉克人 would be greeting歡迎 the Americans美國人 as liberators解放者

3000
07:27
And I knew知道 that there was a completely全然 other story故事
130
423000
2000
07:29
that was taking服用 place地點 in the Middle中間 East where my parents父母 were.
131
425000
4000
07:33
I knew知道 that there was a completely全然 other story故事 being存在 told,
132
429000
3000
07:36
and I was thinking思維, how are people supposed應該 to communicate通信
133
432000
3000
07:39
with each other when they're getting得到 completely全然 different不同 messages消息
