ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Christian Benimana - Architect
Christian Benimana wants to develop the talent and potential of the next generation of African designers with socially-focused design principles.

Why you should listen

Christian Benimana is co-founder of the African Design Centre, a field-based apprenticeship that is set to be the BAUHAUS of Africa with the mission to empower the leaders who will design a more equitable, just, and sustainable world.

Benimana is currently leading the implementation of the African Design Centre. He dreamed of becoming an architect, but there were no design schools in his home country of Rwanda, so he applied and was accepted to Tongji University in Shanghai, China. Not letting his inability to speak Mandarin stand in his way, he spent a year gaining fluency before pursuing his degree in architecture. Upon returning to Rwanda, he joined MASS Design Group as a Design Fellow in 2010 and today directs the firm's Rwanda Programs and the ADC. He has taught at the Kigali Institute of Science and Technology and chairs the Education Boards of the Rwandan Institute of Architects and the East African Institute of Architects. His goal is to develop the talent and potential of the next generation of African designers with socially-focused design principles. He announced the plans for the African Design Centre at the UN Solutions Summit in New York in 2015.

Christian Benimana: The next generation of African architects and designers

Filmed:

Christian Benimana wants to build a network of architects who can help Africa's booming cities flourish in sustainable, equitable ways -- balancing growth with values that are uniquely African. From Nigeria to Burkina Faso and beyond, he shares examples of architecture bringing communities together. A pan-African movement of architects, designers and engineers on the continent and in diaspora are learning from and inspiring each other, and Benimana invites us to imagine future African cities as the most resilient, socially inclusive places on earth.

The longest journey
that I have ever taken.
0
780
2871
00:16
That was in 2002.
1
4470
1844
00:18
I was only 19 years old.
2
6869
1429
00:21
It was the first time
I had ever been on an airplane
3
9146
3329
00:24
and the first time
that I had left my country,
4
12499
2805
00:27
Rwanda.
5
15328
1150
00:29
I had to move thousands of kilometers away
6
17423
3191
00:32
to follow a dream.
7
20638
1280
00:34
A dream I have had
ever since I was a child.
8
22262
3012
00:37
And that dream was to become an architect.
9
25889
3973
00:43
That was impossible
at the time in my country.
10
31264
2601
00:45
There were no schools of architecture.
11
33889
1831
00:48
So when I got a scholarship
to study in China,
12
36426
3061
00:51
I left my life and my family behind
13
39511
2706
00:54
and I moved to Shanghai.
14
42241
1841
00:56
It was an amazing time.
15
44724
2017
00:59
This country was going through
a major building boom.
16
47252
4327
01:03
Shanghai, my new home,
17
51603
1783
01:05
was quickly turning
into a skyscraper city.
18
53410
2542
01:09
China was changing.
19
57241
1694
01:10
World-class projects were built
to convey a new image of development.
20
58959
4436
01:15
Modern, striking engineering marvels
were going up literally everywhere.
21
63889
5690
01:22
But behind these facades,
22
70493
2695
01:25
exploitation of huge numbers
of migrant workers,
23
73212
4222
01:29
massive displacement
of thousands of people
24
77458
3157
01:32
made these projects possible.
25
80639
2023
01:35
And this fast-paced development
26
83042
1926
01:36
also contributed significantly
to the pollution
27
84992
2987
01:40
that is haunting China today.
28
88003
1636
01:42
Fast-forward to 2010,
29
90758
1938
01:44
when I went back home to Rwanda.
30
92720
2128
01:47
There, I found development patterns
similar to what I saw in China.
31
95320
4252
01:52
The country was and still is experiencing
its own population and economic growth.
32
100087
5972
01:58
The pressure to build cities,
infrastructure and buildings
33
106574
3175
02:01
is at its peak,
34
109773
1896
02:03
and as a result,
35
111693
1222
02:04
there is a massive building boom as well.
36
112939
2404
02:08
This is the reality across
the entire continent of Africa,
37
116392
4874
02:13
and here's why.
38
121290
1150
02:14
By 2050, Africa's population will double,
39
122913
3108
02:18
reaching 2.5 billion people.
40
126045
3487
02:22
At this point,
41
130323
1612
02:23
the African population will be
slightly less than the current population
42
131959
5031
02:29
of China and India combined.
43
137014
4142
02:34
The infrastructure and buildings needed
to accommodate this many people
44
142963
4969
02:39
is unprecedented
in the history of humankind.
45
147956
3535
02:44
We have estimated that by 2050,
46
152072
3338
02:47
we have to build
700,000,000 more housing units,
47
155434
5218
02:52
more than 300,000 schools
48
160676
2988
02:55
and nearly 100,000 health centers.
49
163688
3989
03:01
Let me put that into perspective for you.
50
169173
2667
03:04
Every day for the next 35 years,
51
172902
3682
03:08
we have to build seven health centers,
52
176608
2913
03:11
25 schools
53
179545
1858
03:13
and nearly 60,000 housing units each day,
54
181427
4702
03:18
every day.
55
186153
1290
03:22
How are we going to build all of this?
56
190039
2872
03:25
Are we going to follow a model
of unsustainable building and construction
57
193698
4357
03:30
similar to what I witnessed in China?
58
198079
2216
03:32
Or can we develop a uniquely African model
59
200319
4033
03:36
of sustainable and equitable development?
60
204376
3072
03:39
I'm optimistic we can.
61
207905
1689
03:41
I know Africans who are already doing it.
62
209992
2568
03:45
Take Nigerian architect
Kunlé Adeyemi for instance,
63
213334
3040
03:48
and his work in slums
of coastal megacities.
64
216398
3237
03:52
Places like Makoko in Lagos,
65
220121
2921
03:55
where hundreds of thousands of people
live in makeshift structures on stilts
66
223066
4761
03:59
on water,
67
227851
1177
04:01
without government
infrastructure or services.
68
229052
2407
04:04
A community at great risk
of rising sea levels and climate change.
69
232272
5570
04:10
And yet, people who live here
are examples of great ingenuity
70
238223
4353
04:14
and the will to survive.
71
242600
2021
04:16
Kunlé and his team have designed
a prototype school
72
244645
3075
04:19
that is resilient to rising sea levels.
73
247744
2969
04:22
This is Makoko School.
74
250737
2252
04:26
It's a floating prototype structure
that can be adapted to clinics,
75
254502
4205
04:30
to housing, to markets
76
258731
2749
04:33
and other vital infrastructure
this community needs.
77
261504
2548
04:36
It's an ingenious solution
78
264076
2040
04:38
that can ensure this community
lives safely on the waters of Lagos.
79
266140
4754
04:43
This is Francis Kéré.
80
271895
2055
04:46
He works in the country
where he comes from,
81
274726
2049
04:48
Burkina Faso.
82
276799
1150
04:50
Kéré and his team have designed projects
that use traditional building techniques.
83
278374
5556
04:56
Kéré and his team
working in the communities
84
284434
2655
04:59
have developed prototype schools
85
287113
2821
05:01
that the whole community,
86
289958
1492
05:03
similar to every project
in the villages of this country,
87
291474
3624
05:07
comes together to build.
88
295122
1888
05:10
Children bring stones for the foundation,
89
298028
2983
05:13
women bring water
for the brick manufacturing,
90
301035
3331
05:16
and everybody works together
to pound the clay floors.
91
304390
3652
05:20
Working with the community,
92
308946
1286
05:22
Kéré and his team have created
projects that function better,
93
310256
3635
05:25
with adequate lighting
and adequate ventilation.
94
313915
2636
05:29
They're appropriate
for this particular context
95
317231
3072
05:32
and really, really beautiful as well.
96
320327
1826
05:34
For the past seven years,
97
322881
1763
05:36
I have been working as an architect
at MASS Design Group.
98
324668
3574
05:40
It's a design firm that began in Rwanda.
99
328266
2717
05:44
We have worked
in several countries in Africa,
100
332480
3230
05:47
focusing on this more equitable
and sustainable model
101
335734
4313
05:52
of architectural practice,
102
340071
1840
05:53
and Malawi is one of those countries.
103
341935
2220
05:56
It's a country with beautiful,
remote landscapes
104
344587
3404
06:00
with high-peak mountains
and fertile valleys.
105
348015
2973
06:03
But it also has one of the worst
maternal mortality rates in the world.
106
351440
4015
06:09
A pregnant woman in Malawi
either gives birth at home,
107
357067
3477
06:12
or she has to walk a really long journey
to the nearest clinic.
108
360568
3986
06:17
And one out of 36 of these mothers
dies during childbirth.
109
365535
5439
06:24
In Malawi,
110
372647
1151
06:25
with our team at MASS Design Group,
111
373822
1890
06:27
we designed the Kasungu
Maternity Waiting Village.
112
375736
2410
06:30
This is a place women come to
six weeks before their due dates.
113
378856
4013
06:35
Here they receive prenatal care
114
383733
1858
06:37
and train in nutrition
and family planning.
115
385615
3436
06:41
At the same time, they form a community
116
389604
2568
06:44
with other expectant mothers
and their families.
117
392196
2519
06:48
The design of the of Kasungu
Maternity Waiting Village
118
396960
2525
06:51
borrows from the vernacular
typologies of Malawi villages
119
399509
4104
06:55
and is built using really simple
materials and techniques.
120
403637
4203
07:00
The earth blocks that we used
were made from the same soil of this site.
121
408230
4785
07:05
This reduces the carbon footprint
of this building,
122
413803
3293
07:09
but first and foremost,
123
417120
2071
07:11
it provides a safe and dignified space
for these expectant mothers.
124
419215
5627
07:17
These examples show
that architecture and design
125
425361
2944
07:20
have the power and the agency
to address complex problems.
126
428329
5931
07:27
But more to point,
127
435885
2732
07:30
that we can develop
a model of effective solutions
128
438641
3697
07:34
for our communities.
129
442362
1379
07:36
But these three examples are not enough.
130
444476
2540
07:40
300 more examples will not be enough.
131
448128
3230
07:44
We need a whole community
of African architects and designers
132
452198
5358
07:49
to lead with thousands more examples.
133
457580
2923
07:53
In May of this year,
134
461182
1842
07:55
we convened a symposium
on African architecture, in Kigali,
135
463048
3571
07:58
and we invited many
of the leading African designers
136
466643
3698
08:02
and architectural educators
working across the continent.
137
470365
3619
08:06
We all had one thing in common.
138
474617
2049
08:10
Every single one of us
went to school abroad
139
478398
4167
08:14
and outside of Africa.
140
482589
1881
08:16
This has to change.
141
484494
1587
08:19
If we are to develop
solutions unique to us,
142
487271
3357
08:22
rather than attempting to turn
Kigali into Beijing,
143
490652
3476
08:26
or Lagos into Shenzhen,
144
494152
2485
08:28
we need a community
145
496661
1754
08:30
that will build the design confidence
of the next generation
146
498439
3325
08:33
of African architects and designers.
147
501788
2378
08:36
(Applause)
148
504846
7470
08:44
In September last year,
149
512719
1312
08:46
we launched the African Design Centre
150
514055
3080
08:49
to start building this community.
151
517159
2705
08:53
We admitted 11 fellows
from across the continent.
152
521700
3217
08:58
It's a 20-month-long,
design-build fellowship program.
153
526021
4338
09:03
Here, they are learning
to tackle big challenges
154
531091
2890
09:06
such as urbanism and climate change,
155
534005
2512
09:08
as Kunlé and his team have.
156
536541
1779
09:11
They're working with communities
157
539367
1583
09:12
to develop innovative
building solutions and processes,
158
540974
4084
09:17
as Kéré and his team have.
159
545082
2205
09:20
They're learning to understand
the health impact of better buildings
160
548230
4001
09:24
as we at MASS Design Group
have been researching
161
552255
3476
09:27
for the past several years.
162
555755
1606
09:29
The crowning moment of the fellowship
163
557896
2312
09:32
is a real project
that they designed and built.
164
560232
3643
09:36
This is Ruhehe Primary School,
165
564407
2517
09:38
the project they designed.
166
566948
1459
09:40
They immersed themselves in the community
to understand the challenges
167
568431
4303
09:44
but also uncover opportunities,
168
572758
2305
09:47
like using a wall
made of local volcanic stone
169
575087
4132
09:51
to turn the entire campus
into a space of play and active learning.
170
579243
4077
09:56
They evaluated
the environmental conditions
171
584644
2846
09:59
and developed a roof system
that maximizes daylight
172
587514
3254
10:02
and improves acoustic performance.
173
590792
2058
10:05
The construction at Ruhehe Primary School
will begin this year.
174
593243
4190
10:10
(Applause)
175
598861
5874
10:16
And over the coming months,
176
604759
1484
10:18
the African Design Centre fellows
are going to work hand-in-hand
177
606267
3606
10:21
with the Ruhehe community to build it.
178
609897
2537
10:25
When we asked the fellows
179
613493
1243
10:26
what they want to do after
their African Design Centre fellowship,
180
614760
3792
10:30
Tshepo from South Africa said
181
618576
2259
10:32
he wants to introduce this new way
of building into his country,
182
620859
3255
10:36
so he plans to open
a private practice in Johannesburg.
183
624138
3245
10:39
Zani wants to expand opportunities
for women to become engineers.
184
627985
4253
10:44
Before joining the African Design Centre,
185
632966
2136
10:47
she helped start, in Nairobi,
186
635126
1732
10:48
an organization to bridge the gender gaps
for women in engineering fields,
187
636882
4691
10:53
and she hopes to take

Moses had to be determined

The civil war in his country frequently

But even in the middle of this civil war,

that great architecture

Imagine Africa's future cities,

places on earth.
208
715316

This is achievable.
209

2127
12:13
And we have the talent
to make it a reality.
210
721909

But the journey to ready that talent
for the task ahead,

726052

like my own journey,
212
730063

is far too long.

1246
12:26
For the next generation
of African creative leaders,
214
734674
4433
12:31
we have to shorten
and streamline that journey.
215
739131
3435
12:35
But most importantly --
216
743106
1386
12:36
and I cannot stress this enough --
217
744516
2323
12:38
we have to build their design confidence
218
746863
2278
12:41
and empower them to develop solutions
that are truly African
