ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Dan Ariely - Behavioral economist
The dismal science of economics is not as firmly grounded in actual behavior as was once supposed. In "Predictably Irrational," Dan Ariely told us why.

Why you should listen

Dan Ariely is a professor of psychology and behavioral economics at Duke University and a founding member of the Center for Advanced Hindsight. He is the author of the bestsellers Predictably IrrationalThe Upside of Irrationality, and The Honest Truth About Dishonesty -- as well as the TED Book Payoff: The Hidden Logic that Shapes Our Motivations.

Through his research and his (often amusing and unorthodox) experiments, he questions the forces that influence human behavior and the irrational ways in which we often all behave.

Behavioristinen taloustieteilijä Dan Ariely tutkii moraalisääntöjemme virheitä: miksi meistä on OK huijata ja varastaa (joskus). Nokkelat kokeet auttavat häntä osoittamaan, että olemme ennustettavasti irrationaalisia -- ja meihin voidaan vaikuttaa monin hämmästyttävin tavoin.

Haluan kertoa teille
00:18
about predictableennustettavissa irrationalityjärjettömyyden.
1
3000
3000
ennustettavasta irrationaalisuudesta.
00:21
And my interestkiinnostuksen kohde in irrationalirrationaalinen behaviorkäytös
2
6000
4000
Kiinnostukseni irrationaaliseen käyttäytymiseen
00:25
startedaloitti manymonet yearsvuotta agositten in the hospitalsairaala.
3
10000
3000
sai alkunsa monta vuotta sitten sairaalassa.
00:28
I was burnedpoltettu very badlyhuonosti.
4
13000
4000
Olin palanut pahoin.
00:32
And if you spendviettää a lot of time in hospitalsairaala,
5
17000
3000
Jos viettää paljon aikaa sairaalassa,
00:35
you'llte ll see a lot of typestyypit of irrationalitiesjärjettömyyttä.
6
20000
3000
näkee kaikenlaista järjettömyyttä.
00:38
And the one that particularlyerityisesti botheredvaivautunut me in the burnpolttaa departmentosasto
7
23000
5000
Se, mikä minua erityisesti häiritsi palovammaosastolla,
00:43
was the processkäsitellä asiaa by whichjoka the nursessairaanhoitajat tookkesti the bandageSide off me.
8
28000
4000
oli tapa, jolla hoitajat ottivat siteet pois iholtani.
00:48
Now, you muston pakko have all takenotettu a Band-AidLaastari off at some pointkohta,
9
33000
2000
Olette varmasti jokainen joskus irrottaneet laastarin
00:50
and you muston pakko have wonderedihmetteli what's the right approachlähestyä.
10
35000
3000
ja olette miettineet mikä olisi paras tapa.
00:53
Do you riplepää rauhassa it off quicklynopeasti -- shortlyhyt durationkesto but highkorkea intensityintensiteetti --
11
38000
4000
Revittekö sen nopeasti -- lyhyt mutta suurempi kipu --
00:57
or do you take your Band-AidLaastari off slowlyhitaasti --
12
42000
2000
vai irrotatteko laastarin hitaasti --
00:59
you take a long time, but eachkukin secondtoinen is not as painfultuskallinen --
13
44000
4000
jolloin se kestää pidempään, mutta jokainen sekunti on vähemmän kivulias --
01:03
whichjoka one of those is the right approachlähestyä?
14
48000
3000
kumpi näistä on oikea tapa?
01:06
The nursessairaanhoitajat in my departmentosasto thought that the right approachlähestyä
15
51000
4000
Hoitajat osastollani ajattelivat, että oikea tapa
01:10
was the rippingkopiointi one, so they would grabnapata holdpitää and they would riplepää rauhassa,
16
55000
3000
on repiminen, joten he ottivat kiinni siteestä ja repäisivät,
01:13
and they would grabnapata holdpitää and they would riplepää rauhassa.
17
58000
2000
ja ottivat kiinni ja repäisivät.
01:15
And because I had 70 percentprosentti of my bodyruumis burnedpoltettu, it would take about an hourtunnin.
18
60000
4000
Koska kehostani 70 prosenttia oli palanut, se kesti noin tunnin.
01:19
And as you can imaginekuvitella,
19
64000
3000
Voitte hyvin kuvitella,
01:22
I hatedvihasi that momenthetki of rippingkopiointi with incredibleuskomaton intensityintensiteetti.
20
67000
4000
että vihasin tuota repimistä uskomattomasti.
01:26
And I would try to reasonsyy with them and say,
21
71000
2000
Yritin esittää heille vaihtoehtoja:
01:28
"Why don't we try something elsemuu?
22
73000
1000
"Miksemme kokeile jotain muuta?
01:29
Why don't we take it a little longerkauemmin --
23
74000
2000
Miksemme tekisi sitä vähän hitaammin --
01:31
maybe two hourstuntia insteadsen sijaan of an hourtunnin -- and have lessVähemmän of this intensityintensiteetti?"
24
76000
5000
parissa tunnissa tunnin sijaan -- vähemmän kivuliaasti?"
01:36
And the nursessairaanhoitajat told me two things.
25
81000
2000
Hoitajat kertoivat kaksi asiaa.
01:38
They told me that they had the right modelmalli- of the patientpotilas --
26
83000
4000
He kertoivat, että heillä oli oikea kuva potilaasta --
01:42
that they knewtunsi what was the right thing to do to minimizeminimoida my painkipu --
27
87000
3000
he tietävät mikä on oikea tapa minimoida minun kipuni --
01:45
and they alsomyös told me that the wordsana patientpotilas doesn't mean
28
90000
3000
he myös kertoivat, ettei sana potilas tarkoita
01:48
to make suggestionsehdotuksia or to interferehäiritä or ...
29
93000
2000
ehdotusten tekemistä tai asiaan puuttumista ...
01:50
This is not just in Hebrewheprea, by the way.
30
95000
3000
Ei vain hepreaksi.
01:53
It's in everyjoka languageKieli I've had experiencekokea with so farpitkälle.
31
98000
3000
Näin on kaikilla kielillä, joista minulla on kokemusta.
01:56
And, you know, there's not much -- there wasn'tei ollut much I could do,
32
101000
4000
En voinut tehdä mitään
02:00
and they keptsäilytetään on doing what they were doing.
33
105000
3000
ja he jatkoivat kuten ennenkin.
02:03
And about threekolme yearsvuotta latermyöhemmin, when I left the hospitalsairaala,
34
108000
2000
Noin kolme vuotta myöhemmin lähtiessäni sairaalasta
02:05
I startedaloitti studyingopiskelu at the universityyliopisto.
35
110000
3000
aloitin opiskelut yliopistossa.
02:08
And one of the mostsuurin osa interestingmielenkiintoista lessonsoppituntia I learnedoppinut
36
113000
3000
Mielenkiintoisin oppimani asia oli se,
02:11
was that there is an experimentalkokeellinen methodmenetelmä
37
116000
2000
että on kokeellinen menetelmä,
02:13
that if you have a questionkysymys you can createluoda a replicareplica of this questionkysymys
38
118000
4000
jonka mukaan kysymyksen voi toistaa
02:17
in some abstractabstrakti way, and you can try to examinetutkia this questionkysymys,
39
122000
4000
abstraktilla tavalla, ja sitä voi yrittää tutkia,
02:21
maybe learnoppia something about the worldmaailman-.
40
126000
2000
ja ehkä voi oppia jotain maailmasta.
02:23
So that's what I did.
41
128000
2000
Joten tein niin.
02:25
I was still interestedkiinnostunut
42
130000
1000
Olin edelleen kiinnostunut
02:26
in this questionkysymys of how do you take bandagessiteet off burnpolttaa patientspotilaat.
43
131000
2000
miten siteet tulee ottaa palovammapotilailta.
02:28
So originallyalun perin I didn't have much moneyraha,
44
133000
3000
Minulla ei ollut paljon rahaa,
02:31
so I wentmeni to a hardwarelaitteisto storemyymälä and I boughtostettu a carpenter'spuusepän vicepahe.
45
136000
4000
joten menin rautakauppaan ja ostin ruuvipuristimen.
02:35
And I would bringtuoda people to the lablaboratorio and I would put theirheidän fingersormi in it,
46
140000
4000
Toin ihmisiä laboratoriooni ja laitoin heidän sormensa puristimeen,
02:39
and I would crunchräsähdys it a little bitbitti.
47
144000
2000
ja puristin vähän.
02:41
(LaughterNaurua)
48
146000
2000
(Naurua)
02:43
And I would crunchräsähdys it for long periodsaikoja and shortlyhyt periodsaikoja,
49
148000
3000
Puristin pitkiä aikoja ja lyhyitä aikoja,
02:46
and painkipu that wentmeni up and painkipu that wentmeni down,
50
151000
2000
ja kipu koveni ja kipu pieneni,
02:48
and with breakstaukoja and withoutilman breakstaukoja -- all kindsErilaisia of versionsversiot of painkipu.
51
153000
4000
ja taukojen kanssa ja ilman taukoja -- kaikenlaisia versioita kivusta.
02:52
And when I finishedpäättynyt hurtingvahingoittaa people a little bitbitti, I would askkysyä them,
52
157000
2000
Kun lopetin ihmisten satuttamisen, kysyin heiltä,
02:54
so, how painfultuskallinen was this? Or, how painfultuskallinen was this?
53
159000
2000
miten kivuliasta se oli? Tai miten kivuliasta tämä oli?
02:56
Or, if you had to choosevalita betweenvälillä the last two,
54
161000
2000
Tai, jos saisit valita kahden edellisen välillä,
02:58
whichjoka one would you choosevalita?
55
163000
2000
kumman valitsisit?
03:00
(LaughterNaurua)
56
165000
3000
(Naurua)
03:03
I keptsäilytetään on doing this for a while.
57
168000
3000
Jatkoin tätä jonkin aikaa.
03:06
(LaughterNaurua)
58
171000
2000
(Naurua)
03:08
And then, like all good academicakateeminen projectshankkeet, I got more fundingrahoitus.
59
173000
4000
Ja sitten, kuten kaikki hyvät akateemiset projektit, sain lisää rahoitusta.
03:12
I movedsiirretty to soundsäänet, electricalsähkö- shocksiskut --
60
177000
2000
Aloin käyttää ääniä, sähköiskuja --
03:14
I even had a painkipu suitpuku that I could get people to feel much more painkipu.
61
179000
5000
minulla oli jopa kipupuku, jolla ihmiset saatiin tuntemaan paljon enemmän kipua.
03:19
But at the endpää of this processkäsitellä asiaa,
62
184000
4000
Tämä prosessi opetti,
03:23
what I learnedoppinut was that the nursessairaanhoitajat were wrongväärä.
63
188000
3000
että hoitajat olivat väärässä.
03:26
Here were wonderfulihana people with good intentionsaikeet
64
191000
3000
He olivat ihania ihmisiä, joilla oli hyvä tarkoitus,
03:29
and plentypaljon of experiencekokea, and neverthelesstästä huolimatta
65
194000
2000
paljon kokemusta, ja silti
03:31
they were gettingsaada things wrongväärä predictablyodotetusti all the time.
66
196000
4000
he olivat ennustettavan väärässä koko ajan.
03:35
It turnsvuorotellen out that because we don't encodekoodata durationkesto
67
200000
3000
Osoittautui, että koska emme rekisteröi kulunutta aikaa
03:38
in the way that we encodekoodata intensityintensiteetti,
68
203000
2000
samoin kuin rekisteröimme kivun voimakkuuden,
03:40
I would have had lessVähemmän painkipu if the durationkesto would have been longerkauemmin
69
205000
4000
minulla olisi ollut paljon vähemmän kipuja, jos aika olisi ollut pidempi
03:44
and the intensityintensiteetti was loweralempi.
70
209000
2000
ja voimakkuus alempi.
03:46
It turnsvuorotellen out it would have been better to startalkaa with my facekasvot,
71
211000
3000
Osoittautui, että olisi ollut parempi aloittaa kasvoistani,
03:49
whichjoka was much more painfultuskallinen, and moveliikkua towardkohti my legsjalat,
72
214000
2000
joka on paljon herkempi kivulle, ja siirtyä jalkoihin päin,
03:51
givingantaminen me a trendtrendi of improvementparannus over time --
73
216000
3000
antaen minulle helpotuksen tunteen ajan kuluessa --
03:54
that would have been alsomyös lessVähemmän painfultuskallinen.
74
219000
1000
sekin olisi ollut vähemmän kivuliasta.
03:55
And it alsomyös turnsvuorotellen out that it would have been good
75
220000
2000
Osoittautui myös, että olisi ollut hyvä
03:57
to give me breakstaukoja in the middlekeskimmäinen to kindkiltti of recuperatetoipua from the painkipu.
76
222000
2000
pitää taukoja, jotta olisin voinut ikään kuin toipua kivusta.
03:59
All of these would have been great things to do,
77
224000
2000
Kaikki nämä olisivat olleet avuksi,
04:01
and my nursessairaanhoitajat had no ideaajatus.
78
226000
3000
ja hoitajillani ei ollut siitä aavistustakaan.
04:04
And from that pointkohta on I startedaloitti thinkingajattelu,
79
229000
1000
Siitä lähtien ajattelin,
04:05
are the nursessairaanhoitajat the only people in the worldmaailman- who get things wrongväärä
80
230000
3000
ovatko hoitajat ainoita ihmisiä maailmassa, jotka
04:08
in this particulartietty decisionpäätös, or is it a more generalyleinen casetapaus?
81
233000
3000
päättävät väärin, vai onko tämä yleisempää?
04:11
And it turnsvuorotellen out it's a more generalyleinen casetapaus --
82
236000
2000
Osoittautuu, että kyseessä on yleisempi asia --
04:13
there's a lot of mistakesvirheitä we do.
83
238000
3000
teemme paljon virheitä.
04:16
And I want to give you one exampleesimerkki of one of these irrationalitiesjärjettömyyttä,
84
241000
5000
Haluan antaa teille esimerkin yhdestä irrationaalisuudesta,
04:21
and I want to talk to you about cheatinghuijaaminen.
85
246000
3000
ja haluan puhua huijaamisesta.
04:24
And the reasonsyy I pickedpoimitaan cheatinghuijaaminen is because it's interestingmielenkiintoista,
86
249000
2000
Valitsin huijaamisen, koska se on mielenkiintoista,
04:26
but alsomyös it tellskertoo us something, I think,
87
251000
2000
ja se mielestäni kertoo jotain
04:28
about the stockkalusto marketmarkkinoida situationtilanne we're in.
88
253000
3000
tilanteestamme osakemarkkinoilla.
04:31
So, my interestkiinnostuksen kohde in cheatinghuijaaminen startedaloitti
89
256000
3000
Kiinnostukseni huijaamiseen alkoi,
04:34
when EnronEnronin cametuli on the scenenäkymä, explodedräjähti all of a suddenäkillinen,
90
259000
2000
kun Enron tuli esille, räjähti yllättäen,
04:36
and I startedaloitti thinkingajattelu about what is happeninghappening here.
91
261000
3000
ja aloin ajatella kaikkea meneillä olevaa.
04:39
Is it the casetapaus that there was kindkiltti of
92
264000
1000
Oliko asia niin, että
04:40
a fewharvat applesomenat who are capablekykenevä of doing these things,
93
265000
3000
muutama mätä omena pystyy tällaisiin tekoihin,
04:43
or are we talkingpuhuminen a more endemicendeeminen situationtilanne,
94
268000
2000
vai onko kyseessä paikallinen tapa,
04:45
that manymonet people are actuallyitse asiassa capablekykenevä of behavingkäyttäytyy this way?
95
270000
4000
ja monet ihmiset pystyvät tällaiseen käytökseen?
04:49
So, like we usuallyyleensä do, I decidedpäätetty to do a simpleyksinkertainen experimentkoe.
96
274000
4000
Kuten yleensä, päätin tehdä yksinkertaisen kokeen.
04:53
And here'stässä how it wentmeni.
97
278000
1000
Näin se meni.
04:54
If you were in the experimentkoe, I would passkulkea you a sheetarkki of paperpaperi
98
279000
3000
Annoin kokeessa koehenkilöille paperin,
04:57
with 20 simpleyksinkertainen mathmatematiikka problemsongelmia that everybodyjokainen could solveratkaista,
99
282000
4000
jolla oli 20 matemaattista ongelmaa, jotka kuka tahansa voi ratkaista,
05:01
but I wouldn'teikö give you enoughtarpeeksi time.
100
286000
2000
mutta en antanut tarpeeksi aikaa.
05:03
When the fiveviisi minutesminuutit were over, I would say,
101
288000
2000
Kun viisi minuuttia oli ohi, sanoin
05:05
"PassPass me the sheetsarkkia of paperpaperi, and I'll paymaksaa you a dollardollari perkohti questionkysymys."
102
290000
3000
"Antakaa paperit, maksan dollarin per kysymys."
05:08
People did this. I would paymaksaa people fourneljä dollarsdollaria for theirheidän tasktehtävä --
103
293000
4000
Ihmiset tekivät niin. Maksoin heille neljä dollaria --
05:12
on averagekeskiverto people would solveratkaista fourneljä problemsongelmia.
104
297000
2000
keskimäärin ihmiset ratkaisivat neljä ongelmaa.
05:14
Other people I would tempthoukutella to cheathuijata.
105
299000
3000
Toisille annoin mahdollisuuden huijata.
05:17
I would passkulkea theirheidän sheetarkki of paperpaperi.
106
302000
1000
Annoin heille paperin.
05:18
When the fiveviisi minutesminuutit were over, I would say,
107
303000
2000
Viiden minuutin päästä sanoin
05:20
"Please shredrevi the piecepala of paperpaperi.
108
305000
1000
"Repikää paperi.
05:21
Put the little pieceskappaletta in your pockettasku- or in your backpackreppu,
109
306000
3000
Laittakaa palat taskuunne tai reppuunne,
05:24
and tell me how manymonet questionskysymykset you got correctlyoikein."
110
309000
3000
ja kertokaa montako kysymystä saitte oikein."
05:27
People now solvedratkaistu sevenseitsemän questionskysymykset on averagekeskiverto.
111
312000
3000
Nyt ihmiset ratkaisivat keskimäärin seitsemän kysymystä.
05:30
Now, it wasn'tei ollut as if there was a fewharvat badhuono applesomenat --
112
315000
5000
Kyseessä ei ollut muutama mätä omena --
05:35
a fewharvat people cheatedhuijanneen a lot.
113
320000
3000
vain harvat huijasivat paljon.
05:38
InsteadSen sijaan, what we saw is a lot of people who cheathuijata a little bitbitti.
114
323000
3000
Sen sijaan, monet ihmiset huijasivat vähän.
05:41
Now, in economictaloudellinen theoryteoria,
115
326000
3000
Taloustieteen teorioissa
05:44
cheatinghuijaaminen is a very simpleyksinkertainen cost-benefitkustannus-hyöty analysisanalyysi.
116
329000
3000
huijaaminen on yksinkertainen kustannus-hyötyanalyysi.
05:47
You say, what's the probabilitytodennäköisyys of beingollessa caughtsai kiinni?
117
332000
2000
Mikä on todennäköisyys että jää kiinni?
05:49
How much do I standseistä to gainsaada from cheatinghuijaaminen?
118
334000
3000
Kuinka paljon hyötyy huijaamisesta?
05:52
And how much punishmentrankaiseminen would I get if I get caughtsai kiinni?
119
337000
2000
Ja miten paha rangaistus on, jos jää kiinni?
05:54
And you weighpunnita these optionsvaihtoehtoja out --
120
339000
2000
Vaihtoehtoja punnitaan --

So, we try to testtestata this.
123
346000

Joten yritimme testata tätä.
06:03
For some people, we variedmonipuolinen how much moneyraha they could get away with --

Joidenkin ihmisten kohdalla varioimme miten paljon rahaa he saisivat --

kuinka paljon rahaa he voisivat varastaa.

06:14
You would expectodottaa that as the amountmäärä of moneyraha on the tablepöytä increaseslisääntyy,
128
359000
4000
Joku saattaisi uskoa, että rahan lisääntyessä
06:18
people would cheathuijata more, but in facttosiasia it wasn'tei ollut the casetapaus.
129
363000
3000
ihmiset huijaisivat enemmän, mutta niin ei itse asiassa käynyt.
06:21
We got a lot of people cheatinghuijaaminen by stealingvarastaa by a little bitbitti.
130
366000
3000
Monet ihmiset huijasivat vain vähän.
06:24
What about the probabilitytodennäköisyys of beingollessa caughtsai kiinni?
131
369000
3000
Entä kiinnijäämisen todennäköisyys?
06:27
Some people shreddedsilputtu halfpuoli the sheetarkki of paperpaperi,
132

Jotkut repivät vain puolet paperista,
06:29
so there was some evidencenäyttö left.
133
374000
1000
joten osa todisteista jäi jäljelle.
06:30
Some people shreddedsilputtu the wholekoko sheetarkki of paperpaperi.
134
375000
2000
Jotkut repivät koko paperin.
06:32
Some people shreddedsilputtu everything, wentmeni out of the roomhuone,
135

3000
Jotkut repivät kaiken, poistuivat huoneesta

136
380000
3000
ja ottivat maksun kulhosta, jossa oli yli 100 dollaria.
06:38
You would expectodottaa that as the probabilitytodennäköisyys of beingollessa caughtsai kiinni goesmenee down,
137
383000
3000
Joku saattaisi olettaa, että kiinnijäämisen todennäköisyyden aletessa
06:41
people would cheathuijata more, but again, this was not the casetapaus.
138
386000
3000
ihmiset huijaisivat enemmän, mutta näin ei käynyt.
06:44
Again, a lot of people cheatedhuijanneen by just by a little bitbitti,
139
389000
3000
Edelleenkin, useat ihmiset huijasivat vain vähän
06:47
and they were insensitivetunteeton to these economictaloudellinen incentiveskannustimia.
140
392000
3000
ja he eivät olleet herkkiä näille taloudellisille palkkioille.
06:50
So we said, "If people are not sensitiveherkkä
141
395000
1000
Joten sanoimme: "Jos ihmiset eivät ole herkkiä
06:51
to the economictaloudellinen rationaljärkevä theoryteoria explanationsselitykset, to these forcesvoimat,
142
396000

06:56
what could be going on?"
143
401000
3000
mille sitten?"
06:59
And we thought maybe what is happeninghappening is that there are two forcesvoimat.
144
404000
3000
Arvelimme, että ehkä on kaksi eri voimaa.
07:02
At one handkäsi, we all want to look at ourselvesitse in the mirrorpeili
145
407000
2000
Me kaikki haluamme katsoa itseämme peiliin
07:04
and feel good about ourselvesitse, so we don't want to cheathuijata.
146
409000
3000
ja tuntea olomme hyväksi, joten emme huijaa.
07:07
On the other handkäsi, we can cheathuijata a little bitbitti,
147
412000
2000
Toisaalta, voimme huijata vähän
07:09
and still feel good about ourselvesitse.
148
414000
2000
ja silti tuntea olomme hyväksi.
07:11
So, maybe what is happeninghappening is that
149
416000
1000
Joten ehkä on olemassa
07:12
there's a leveltaso of cheatinghuijaaminen we can't go over,
150
417000
2000
huijaamisen taso, jota emme voi ylittää,
07:14
but we can still benefithyöty from cheatinghuijaaminen at a lowmatala degreeaste,
151
419000
4000
mutta voimme silti hyötyä huijaamisesta matalalla tasolla,
07:18
as long as it doesn't changemuuttaa our impressionsnäyttökertaa about ourselvesitse.
152
423000
3000
kunhan se ei muuta mielikuvaa itsestämme.
07:21
We call this like a personalhenkilökohtainen fudgetuhertaa factortekijä.
153
426000
3000
Kutsumme tätä henkilökohtaiseksi säätötekijäksi.
07:25
Now, how would you testtestata a personalhenkilökohtainen fudgetuhertaa factortekijä?
154
430000
4000
Kuinka testata henkilökohtaista säätötekijää?
07:29
InitiallyAluksi we said, what can we do to shrinkkutistua the fudgetuhertaa factortekijä?
155
434000
4000
Aluksi halusimme tietää, miten sitä voisi pienentää?
07:33
So, we got people to the lablaboratorio, and we said,
156
438000
2000
Sanoimme ihmisille laboratoriossamme:
07:35
"We have two taskstehtävät for you todaytänään."
157
440000
2000
"Meillä on teille kaksi tehtävää."
07:37
First, we askedkysyi halfpuoli the people
158

1000
Ensin pyysimme puolia heistä
07:38

or to recallpalauttaa mieleen The TenKymmenen CommandmentsKäskyt,
160

tai kymmentä käskyä.
07:43
and then we temptedhoukutusta them with cheatinghuijaaminen.
161
448000
2000
Sitten yritimme saada heidät huijaamaan.
07:45
TurnsKääntyy out the people who triedyritti to recallpalauttaa mieleen The TenKymmenen CommandmentsKäskyt --
162

Osoittautui, että ihmiset, jotka yrittivät muistaa kymmenen käskyä --
07:48
and in our samplenäyte nobodyei kukaan could recallpalauttaa mieleen all of The TenKymmenen CommandmentsKäskyt --
163

but those people who triedyritti to recallpalauttaa mieleen The TenKymmenen CommandmentsKäskyt,
164
456000
4000
mutta ne, jotka yrittivät muistaa --
07:55

165
460000
3000
saadessaan mahdollisuuden huijata, eivät huijanneet ollenkaan.
07:58
It wasn'tei ollut that the more religioususkonnollinen people --

Uskonnolliset ihmiset -- jotka muistavat kymmenen käskyä paremmin --
08:00

and the lessVähemmän religioususkonnollinen people --
168

ja vähemmän uskonnolliset --
08:03
the people who couldn'tvoineet remembermuistaa almostmelkein any CommandmentsKäskyt --
169
468000
1000
jotka eivät muistaneet melkein yhtään käskyistä --
08:04
cheatedhuijanneen more.
170
469000
2000
eivät huijanneet enemmän.
08:06
The momenthetki people thought about tryingyrittää to recallpalauttaa mieleen The TenKymmenen CommandmentsKäskyt,
171
471000
4000
Yrittäessään muistaa kymmentä käskyä ihmiset
08:10
they stoppedpysäytetty cheatinghuijaaminen.
172
475000
1000
lopettivat huijaamisen.
08:11
In facttosiasia, even when we gaveantoi self-declareditse ilmoitettu atheistsateistit
173
476000
2000
Itse asiassa, kun pyysimme ateisteiksi tunnustautuneita
08:13
the tasktehtävä of swearingvala on the BibleRaamattu and we give them a chancemahdollisuus to cheathuijata,
174
478000
4000
vannomaan valan käsi Raamatulla ja annoimme heille mahdollisuuden huijata,
08:17
they don't cheathuijata at all.
175
482000
2000
he eivät huijanneet lainkaan.
08:21
Now, TenKymmenen CommandmentsKäskyt is something that is hardkova
176
486000
2000
Kymmentä käskyä on hankala tuoda
08:23
to bringtuoda into the educationkoulutus systemjärjestelmä, so we said,
177
488000
2000
koulutusjärjestelmään, joten sanoimme:
08:25
"Why don't we get people to signmerkki the honorkunnia codekoodi?"
178
490000
2000
"Mitä jos ihmiset allekirjoittavat kunniasäännön?"
08:27
So, we got people to signmerkki,
179
492000
2000
Joten annoimme ihmisten allekirjoittaa:
08:29
"I understandymmärtää that this shortlyhyt surveytutkimus fallsFalls underalla the MITMIT HonorKunnia CodeKoodi."
180
494000
4000
"Ymmärrän, että tämä tutkimus noudattaa MIT:n kunniasääntöä."
08:33
Then they shreddedsilputtu it. No cheatinghuijaaminen whatsoevermikä tahansa.
181
498000
3000
Sitten he repivät paperin. Kukaan ei huijannut.
08:36
And this is particularlyerityisesti interestingmielenkiintoista,
182
501000
1000
Tämä on erityisen mielenkiintoista,
08:37
because MITMIT doesn't have an honorkunnia codekoodi.
183
502000
2000
sillä MIT:llä ei ole kunniasääntöä.
08:39
(LaughterNaurua)

(Naurua)
08:44
So, all this was about decreasinglaskeva the fudgetuhertaa factortekijä.
185
509000
4000
Näin siis vähensimme säätötekijää.
08:48
What about increasinglisääntyy the fudgetuhertaa factortekijä?
186
513000
3000
Entä miten sitä nostetaan?
08:51
The first experimentkoe -- I walkedkäveli around MITMIT

189
521000

jääkaapit olivat opiskelijoiden yhteisiä.
08:58
And I cametuli back to measuremitata what we technicallyteknisesti call
190

Menin takaisin mittaamaan niin kutsuttua

191
526000
4000
Coca Colan puoliintumisaikaa -- kuinka kauan ne pysyisivät jääkaapissa?
09:05
As you can expectodottaa it doesn't last very long; people take it.
192
530000
3000
Kuten arvata saattaa, ei kovin kauan. Ihmiset ottivat ne.
09:08
In contrastkontrasti, I tookkesti a platelevy with sixkuusi one-dollaryhden dollarin billssetelit,
193
533000
4000
Tosin, kun laitoin lautaselle kuusi dollarin seteliä
09:12
and I left those plateslevyt in the samesama refrigeratorsjääkaapit.
194
537000
3000
ja laitoin ne samoihin jääkaappeihin,
09:15
No billlaskuttaa ever disappearedkatosi.
195
540000
1000
yksikään seteli ei kadonnut.
09:16
Now, this is not a good socialsosiaalinen sciencetiede experimentkoe,
196
541000
3000
Tämä ei ole kovin hyvä yhteiskuntatieteen koe,
09:19
so to do it better I did the samesama experimentkoe
197
544000
3000
joten tein sen paremmin
09:22
as I describedon kuvattu to you before.
198
547000
2000
aiemmin kuvaamallani tavalla.
09:24
A thirdkolmas of the people we passedläpäissyt the sheetarkki, they gaveantoi it back to us.

Yhdelle kolmannekselle ihmisistä annoimme paperin ja he antoivat sen takaisin.
09:27
A thirdkolmas of the people we passedläpäissyt it to, they shreddedsilputtu it,

552000
3000
Toinen kolmannes repi paperin,
09:30
they cametuli to us and said,

Kolmas ryhmä repi paperinsa,
09:37
they cametuli to us and said,

09:45
We did not paymaksaa them with dollarsdollaria; we paidmaksettu them with something elsemuu.
206
570000
3000
Emme maksaneet heille dollareissa. Annoimme heille jotain muuta.
09:48
And then they tookkesti the something elsemuu, they walkedkäveli 12 feetjalkaa to the sidepuoli,
207

3000
Sitten he ottivat sen vastaan, kävelivät muutama metriä sivummalle

But this did not solveratkaista the bigiso problemongelma I had with EnronEnronin yetvielä,
219

Mutta tämä ei ratkaissut ongelmaa, joka minulla oli Enronin kanssa,
10:22
because in EnronEnronin, there's alsomyös a socialsosiaalinen elementelementti.
220
607000
3000
koska Enronissa oli myös sosiaalinen elementti.
10:25
People see eachkukin other behavingkäyttäytyy.

Ihmiset näkevät toistensa käytöksen.
10:26
In facttosiasia, everyjoka day when we openavata the newsuutiset
222
611000
2000
Joka päivä uutisissa
10:28
we see examplesesimerkkejä of people cheatinghuijaaminen.
223
613000
2000
näemme esimerkkejä ihmisistä huijaamassa.
10:30
What does this causesyy us?
224
615000
3000
Mitä se aiheuttaa meissä?
10:33
So, we did anothertoinen experimentkoe.
225
618000
1000
Teimme toisen kokeen.
10:34
We got a bigiso groupryhmä of studentsopiskelijoille to be in the experimentkoe,
226
619000
3000
Saimme ison ryhmän opiskelijoita kokeeseemme,
10:37
and we prepaidPrepaid them.
227
622000
1000
ja maksoimme heille etukäteen.
10:38
So everybodyjokainen got an envelopekirjekuori with all the moneyraha for the experimentkoe,
228
623000
3000
Jokainen sai kirjekuoren, joka sisälsi kaikki kokeen rahat.
10:41
and we told them that at the endpää, we askedkysyi them
229
626000
2000
Pyysimme heitä maksamaan takaisin
10:43
to paymaksaa us back the moneyraha they didn't make. OK?
230
628000
4000
rahat, joita he eivät ansainneet.
10:47
The samesama thing happenstapahtuu.
231
632000
1000
Sama asia tapahtui.
10:48
When we give people the opportunitytilaisuus to cheathuijata, they cheathuijata.
232
633000
2000
Kun annamme ihmisille mahdollisuuden huijata, he huijaavat.
10:50
They cheathuijata just by a little bitbitti, all the samesama.
233
635000
3000
He huijaavat vain vähän, mutta huijaavat silti.
10:53
But in this experimentkoe we alsomyös hiredpalkattu an actingnäytteleminen studentopiskelija-.
234
638000
3000
Mutta tässä kokeessa meillä oli myös näyttelijä.
10:56
This actingnäytteleminen studentopiskelija- stoodseisoi up after 30 secondssekuntia, and said,
235
641000
4000
Näyttelijä nousi ylös 30 sekunnin päästä ja sanoi:
11:00
"I solvedratkaistu everything. What do I do now?"
236
645000
3000
"Ratkaisin kaiken. Mitä minun pitää nyt tehdä?"
11:03
And the experimenterkokeilija said, "If you've finishedpäättynyt everything, go home.
237
648000
4000
Kokeen valvoja sanoi: "Jos olet tehnyt kaiken, mene kotiin."
11:07
That's it. The tasktehtävä is finishedpäättynyt."
238
652000
1000
Siinä kaikki.
11:08
So, now we had a studentopiskelija- -- an actingnäytteleminen studentopiskelija- --
239
653000
4000
Joten meillä oli opiskelija -- siis näyttelijä --
11:12
that was a partosa of the groupryhmä.
240
657000
2000
joka oli osa ryhmää.
11:14
NobodyKukaan ei knewtunsi it was an actornäyttelijä.
241
659000
2000
Kukaan ei tiennyt hänen olevan näyttelijä.
11:16
And they clearlyselvästi cheatedhuijanneen in a very, very seriousvakava way.
242
661000
4000
Ja hän selvästi huijasi erittäin vakavalla tavalla.
11:20
What would happentapahtua to the other people in the groupryhmä?

12:47
So, what have we learnedoppinut from this about cheatinghuijaaminen?

Mitä olemme oppineet tässä huijaamisesta?
12:51
We'veOlemme learnedoppinut that a lot of people can cheathuijata.

13:08
And when we see cheatinghuijaaminen around us,

14:05
We have manymonet intuitionsintuitioiden in our life,
304
830000
4000
Meillä on monia intuitioita elämissämme,
14:09
and the pointkohta is that manymonet of these intuitionsintuitioiden are wrongväärä.
305
834000
3000
ja asian ydin on siinä, että monet näistä intuitioista ovat vääriä.
14:12
The questionkysymys is, are we going to testtestata those intuitionsintuitioiden?
306
837000
3000
Kysymys kuuluu aiommeko testata niitä intuitioita?
14:15
We can think about how we're going to testtestata this intuitionintuitio
307
840000
2000
Voimme pohtia kuinka testata tätä intuitiota
14:17
in our privateyksityinen life, in our businessliiketoiminta life,
308
842000
2000
henkilökohtaisessa elämässämme, työelämässä,
14:19
and mostsuurin osa particularlyerityisesti when it goesmenee to policypolitiikka,
309
844000
3000

14:22
when we think about things like No ChildLapsi Left BehindTakana,
310
847000

312
853000

verotus, terveydenhuolto ja niin edelleen.
14:31
And the difficultyvaikeus of testingtestaus our intuitionintuitio
313
856000

Intuitiomme testaamisen vaikeus
14:33
was the bigiso lessonoppitunti I learnedoppinut
314
858000
2000
oli suuri opetus, jonka opin,
14:35
when I wentmeni back to the nursessairaanhoitajat to talk to them.
315
860000
2000
kun menin takaisin puhumaan hoitajilleni.
14:37
So I wentmeni back to talk to them
316
862000
2000
Menin puhumaan heille
14:39
and tell them what I foundlöydetty out about removingpoistamalla bandagessiteet.
317
864000
3000
ja kertomaan heille mitä olin oppinut siteiden poistamisesta.
14:42
And I learnedoppinut two interestingmielenkiintoista things.
318
867000
2000
Opin kaksi mielenkiintoista asiaa.
14:44
One was that my favoritesuosikki- nursesairaanhoitaja, EttieEttie,
319
869000
2000
Yksi lempihoitajistani, Ettie,
14:46
told me that I did not take her painkipu into considerationharkinta.
320
871000
4000
kertoi minulle, että en ottanut huomioon hänen kipuaan.
14:50
She said, "Of coursekurssi, you know, it was very painfultuskallinen for you.
321
875000
2000
Hän sanoi: "Totta kai se oli hyvin kivuliasta sinulle.
14:52
But think about me as a nursesairaanhoitaja,
322
877000
2000
Mutta ajattele minua sairaanhoitajaa,
14:54
takingottaen, removingpoistamalla the bandagessiteet of somebodyjoku I likedpiti,
323
879000
2000
poistamassa siteitä joltain, josta pidin,
14:56
and had to do it repeatedlytoistuvasti over a long periodaika of time.
324
881000
3000
ja minun piti tehdä se useita kertoja pitkän aikaa.
14:59
CreatingLuominen so much torturekiduttaa was not something that was good for me, too."
325
884000
3000
Sellainen kivun aiheuttaminen ei ollut minullekaan hyväksi."
15:02
And she said maybe partosa of the reasonsyy was it was difficultvaikea for her.
326
887000
5000
Ja hän sanoi, ehkä osasyynä oli se, että se oli vaikeaa hänelle.
15:07
But it was actuallyitse asiassa more interestingmielenkiintoista than that, because she said,
327
892000
3000
Se oli kuitenkin mielenkiintoisempaa, koska hän sanoi:
15:10
"I did not think that your intuitionintuitio was right.
328
895000
5000
"En uskonut, että sinun intuitiosi oli oikea.
15:15
I felttunsi olonsa my intuitionintuitio was correctoikea."
329
900000
1000
Tunsin, että minun intuitioni oli oikein."
15:16
So, if you think about all of your intuitionsintuitioiden,
330
901000
2000
Joten jos pohtii kaikkia omia intuitioitaan,
15:18
it's very hardkova to believe that your intuitionintuitio is wrongväärä.
331
903000
4000
on hyvin vaikea uskoa, että oma intuitio on väärin.
15:22
And she said, "GivenKoska the facttosiasia that I thought my intuitionintuitio was right ..." --
332
907000
3000
Ja hän sanoi, "ottaen huomioon, että pidin omaa intuitiotani oikeana..." --
15:25
she thought her intuitionintuitio was right --
333
910000
2000
hän piti omaa intuitiotaan oikeana --
15:27
it was very difficultvaikea for her to accepthyväksyä doing a difficultvaikea experimentkoe
334
912000
5000
oli hyvin vaikea saada hänet tekemään vaikea koe,
15:32
to try and checktarkistaa whetheronko she was wrongväärä.
335
917000
2000
jossa yritettäisiin selvittää onko hän väärässä.
15:34
But in facttosiasia, this is the situationtilanne we're all in all the time.
336
919000
4000
Mutta tosiasiassa olemme tässä tilanteessa koko ajan.
15:38
We have very strongvahva intuitionsintuitioiden about all kindsErilaisia of things --
337
923000
3000
Meillä on voimakkaita intuitioita kaikenlaisista asioista --
15:41
our ownoma abilitykyky, how the economytalous worksteokset,

how we should paymaksaa schoolkoulu teachersopettajat.
339
929000

15:46
But unlessellei we startalkaa testingtestaus those intuitionsintuitioiden,
340
931000
3000
Mutta jos emme ala testata näitä intuitioita,
15:49
we're not going to do better.
341
934000
2000
emme paranna tilannetta.
15:51
And just think about how better my life would have been
342
936000
2000
Ajatelkaa miten paljon parempi elämäni olisi ollut,
15:53
if these nursessairaanhoitajat would have been willinghalukas to checktarkistaa theirheidän intuitionintuitio,

938000

jos hoitajat olisivat olleet valmiita testaamaan intuitiotaan,
15:55
and how everything would have been better
344

ja miten paljon paremmin kaikki olisi,
15:56
if we just startalkaa doing more systematicjärjestelmällinen experimentationkokeilu of our intuitionsintuitioiden.
345
941000
