ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Shekhar Kapur - Director and writer
Shekhar Kapur is a visionary filmmaker and storyteller who works at the intersection of art, myth and activism.

Why you should listen

Golden Globe-winning director Shekhar Kapur makes lush, international period films -- such as Elizabeth and The Four Feathers -- and Indian hits like Mr. India and Bandit Queen. Most recently, Kapur's short film "Passages"" is part of the October 2009 film anthology New York, I Love You. Also this October, he sat on the judging panel for 1 Minute to Save the World, a competition for short films about climate change. (And yes, last summer, he was a judge on India's Got Talent.)

His forthcoming film Paani – the hindi word for water – explores mumbai's shrinking supply of water and its distribution underworld. equally at home in hollywood and Bollywood, he's also a comics mogul; in 2006 he co-founded Virgin Comics as a venue for turning Indian and Hindu myths into pop-culture icons. For the company, now reorganized as Liquid Comics, he cocreated the series Ramayan 3392 A.D., based on the Ramayana. His newest Liquid series: Devi.

137
384000
2000
06:41
What was my story
06:43
And I don't know why, but I remember思い出す the storyストーリー.
139
388000
3000
06:46
There was a woodcutter木こり
140
391000
2000
06:48
who'sだれの about to take his ax and chopチョップ a pieceピース of wood木材,
141
393000
3000
06:51
and the whole全体 galaxy銀河 is one atom原子 of that ax.
142
396000
4000
06:56
And when that ax hitsヒット that pieceピース of wood木材,
143
401000
3000
06:59
that's when everything will destroy破壊する
144
404000
2000
07:01
and the Big大きい Bangバング will happen起こる again.
145
406000
2000
07:03
But all before that there was a woodcutter
146
408000
2000
07:05
And then when I would run走る out of that storyストーリー,
147
410000
2000
07:07
I would imagine想像する that woodcutter's木こり universe宇宙
148
412000
3000
07:10
is one atom原子 in the ax of another別の woodcutter木こり.
149
415000
3000
07:13
So everyすべて time, I could tell my storyストーリー again and again
150
418000
3000
07:16
and get over this problem問題,
151
421000
2000
07:18
and so I got over the problem問題.
152
423000
3000
07:21
How did I do it? Tell a story
07:24
So what is a story
07:26
A storyストーリー is our -- all of us --
155
431000
3000
07:29
we are the stories物語 we tell ourselves自分自身.
156
434000
3000
07:32
In this universe宇宙, and this existence存在,
157
437000
4000
07:36
where we liveライブ with this duality二重性
158
441000
2000
07:38
of whetherかどうか we exist存在する or not
159
443000
2000
07:40
and who are we,
160
445000
2000
07:42
the stories物語 we tell ourselves自分自身 are the stories物語
161
447000
3000
07:45
that define定義する the potentialities可能性
162
450000
2000
07:47
of our existence存在.
163
452000
2000
07:49
We are the stories物語 we tell ourselves自分自身.
164
454000
3000
07:54
So that's as wideワイド as we look at stories物語.
165
459000
2000
07:56
A storyストーリー is the relationship関係
166
461000
2000
07:58
that you develop開発する betweenの間に who you are,
167
463000
4000
08:02
or who you potentially潜在的 are,
168
467000
2000
08:04
and the infinite無限 world世界, and that's our mythology神話.
169
469000
3000
08:07
We tell our stories物語,
170
472000
3000
08:10
and a person withoutなし a storyストーリー does not exist存在する.
171
475000
3000
08:13
So Einsteinアインシュタイン told a storyストーリー
172
478000
3000
08:16
and followed続く his stories物語 and came来た up with theories理論
173
481000
3000
08:19
and came来た up with theories理論 and then came来た up with his equations方程式.
174
484000
3000
08:22
Alexanderアレキサンダー had a storyストーリー that his mother used to tell him,
175
487000
3000
08:25
and he went行った out to conquer征服する the world世界.
176
490000
2000
08:27
We all, everybodyみんな, has a storyストーリー that they followフォローする.
177
492000
3000
08:30
We tell ourselves自分自身 stories物語.
178
495000
2000
08:32
So, I will go furtherさらに, and I say,
179
497000
3000
08:35
"I tell a storyストーリー, and thereforeしたがって、 I exist存在する."
180
500000
2000
08:37
I exist存在する because there are stories物語,
181
502000
2000
08:39
and if there are no stories物語, we don't exist存在する.
182
504000
2000
08:41
We create作成する stories物語 to define定義する our existence存在.
183
506000
3000
08:44
If we do not create作成する the stories物語,
184
509000
2000
08:46
we probably多分 go mad怒っている.
185
511000
3000
08:49
I don't know; I'm not sure, but that's what I've done完了 all the time.
186
514000
3000
08:52
Now, a film.
187
517000
4000
08:56
A film tells伝える a storyストーリー.
188
521000
2000
08:58
I oftenしばしば wonderワンダー when I make a film -- I'm thinking考え of making作る a film of the Buddha --
189
523000
3000
09:01
and I oftenしばしば wonderワンダー: If Buddha had all the elements要素
190
526000
4000
09:05
that are given与えられた to a directorディレクター --
191
530000
2000
09:07
if he had music音楽, if he had visualsビジュアル, if he had a videoビデオ cameraカメラ --
192
532000
3000
09:10
would we get Buddhism仏教 better?
193
535000
2000
09:12
But that puts置く some kind種類 of burden重荷 on me.
194
537000
2000
09:14
I have to tell a story
09:16
in a much more elaborate精巧な way,
196
541000
2000
09:18
but I have the potential潜在的な.
197
543000
2000
09:22
When I first went行った to Hollywoodハリウッド, they said --
199
547000
2000
09:24
I used to talk about subtextサブテキスト, and my agentエージェント came来た to me,
200
549000
2000
09:26
"Would you kindly親切に not talk about subtextサブテキスト?"
201
551000
3000
09:29
And I said, "Why?" He said, "Because nobody誰も is going to give you a film
202
554000
2000
09:31
if you talk about subtextサブテキスト.
203
556000
2000
09:34
Just talk about plot
09:36
and say how wonderful素晴らしい you'llあなたは shootシュート the film,
205
561000
2000
09:38
what the visualsビジュアル will be."
206
563000
2000
09:40
So when I look at a film,
207
565000
2000
09:42
here'sここにいる what we look for:
208
567000
2000
09:44
We look for a storyストーリー on the plotプロット levelレベル,
209
569000
3000
09:47
then we look for a storyストーリー
210
572000
2000
09:49
on the psychological心理的 levelレベル,
211
574000
2000
09:51
then we look for a storyストーリー on the political政治的 levelレベル,
212
576000
3000
09:54
then we look at a storyストーリー
213
579000
2000
09:56
on a mythological神話 levelレベル.
214
581000
2000
09:58
And I look for stories物語 on each levelレベル.
215
583000
2000
10:00
Now, it is not necessary必要
216
585000
2000
10:02
that these stories物語 agree同意する with each other.
217
587000
3000
10:05
What is wonderful素晴らしい is,
218
590000
2000
10:07
at manyたくさんの times, the stories物語 will contradict矛盾する with each other.
219
592000
4000
10:11
So when I work with Rahmanラーマン who'sだれの a great musicianミュージシャン,
220
596000
2000
10:13
I oftenしばしば tell him, "Don't followフォローする what the scriptスクリプト already既に says言う.
221
598000
4000
10:17
Find that whichどの is not.
222
602000
2000
10:19
Find the truth真実 for yourselfあなた自身,
223
604000
2000
10:21
and when you find the truth真実 for yourselfあなた自身,
224
606000
2000
10:23
there will be a truth真実 in it, but it mayかもしれない contradict矛盾する the plotプロット,
225
608000
2000
10:25
but don't worry心配 about it."
226
610000
2000
10:29
So, the sequel続編 to "Elizabethエリザベス," "Goldenゴールデン Age年齢."
227
614000
3000
10:32
When I made the sequel続編 to "Elizabethエリザベス," here was a storyストーリー that
228
617000
2000
10:34
the writerライター was telling伝える:
229
619000
2000
10:36
A woman女性 who was threatened脅された
230
621000
3000
10:41
and was going to war戦争,
232
626000
2000
女性が
10:43
and was going to war戦争, fell落ちた in love with Walterウォルター Raleighローリー.
233
628000
2000
10:45
Because she fell落ちた in love with Walterウォルター Raleighローリー,
234
630000
3000
10:48
she was giving与える up the reasons理由 she was a queen女王,
235
633000
2000
10:50
and then Walterウォルター Raleighローリー
236
635000
2000
10:52
fell落ちた in love with her ladyレディ in waiting待っている,
237
637000
2000
10:54
and she had to decide決めます whetherかどうか she was a queen女王 going to war戦争
238
639000
2000
10:56
or she wanted...
239
641000
3000
11:00
Here'sここにいる the storyストーリー I was telling伝える:
240
645000
3000
11:03
The gods神々 up there,
241
648000
2000
11:05
there were two people.
242
650000
2000
11:07
There was Philipフィリップ IIII, who was divine神聖な
243
652000
3000
11:10
because he was always praying祈る,
244
655000
3000
11:13
and there was Elizabethエリザベス, who was divine神聖な,
245
658000
2000
11:15
but not quiteかなり divine神聖な because she thought she was divine神聖な,
246
660000
2000
11:17
but the blood血液 of beingであること mortal死ぬ flowed流れた in her.
247
662000
3000
11:20
But the divine神聖な one was unjust不当,
248
665000
3000
11:23
so the gods神々 said,
249
668000
2000
11:25
"OK, what we need to do is
250
670000
2000
11:27
help the just one."
251
672000
3000
11:30
And so they helped助けた the just one.
252
675000
2000
11:32
And what they did was, they sent送られた Walterウォルター Raleighローリー down
253
677000
3000
11:35
to physically物理的に separate別々の her mortal死ぬ self自己
254
680000
3000
11:38
from her spirit精神 self自己.
255
683000
2000
11:40
And the mortal死ぬ self自己 was the girl女の子
256
685000
2000
11:42
that Walterウォルター Raleighローリー was sent送られた,
257
687000
2000
11:44
and gradually徐々に he separated分離された her
258
689000
3000
11:47
so she was free無料 to be divine神聖な.
259
692000
2000
11:49
And the two divine神聖な people fought戦った,
260
694000
2000
11:51
and the gods神々 were on the side of divinity神性.
261
696000
2000
11:53
Of courseコース, all the Britishイギリス人 press押す got really upset動揺.
262
698000
3000
11:57
They said, "We won勝った the Armada艦隊."
263
702000
3000
12:00
But I said, "But the storm won勝った the Armada艦隊.
264
705000

12:02
The gods神々 sent送られた the storm."
265
707000
2000
12:04
So what was I doing?
266
709000
2000
12:06
I was trying試す to find a mythic神話的な reason理由

12:20
The writerライター said "It's about history歴史, plotプロット."
273
725000
3000

12:23
I said "It's about mythology神話,

And now, out of the mythology神話 of that,

17:45
I'm starting起動 to create作成する a world世界.

402
1086000

18:23
Now, where does this upperアッパー cityシティ and lower低い cityシティ come?
403
1088000
2000
18:25
There's a mythology神話 in Indiaインド about --
404

18:27
where they say, and I'll say it in Hindiヒンディー語,

18:30
[Hindi
18:34
Right. What does that mean?
407
1099000
2000
18:36
It says言う that the richリッチ are always sitting座っている on the shoulders
408
1101000
3000
18:39
and survive生き残ります on the shoulders of the poor貧しい.
409
1104000
2000
18:41
So, from that mythology神話, the upperアッパー cityシティ and lower低い cityシティ come.
410
1106000
2000
18:43
So the design設計 has a storyストーリー.
411
1108000
3000
18:46
And now, what happens起こる is that the people of the upperアッパー cityシティ,

But ultimately最終的に, what is a storyストーリー? It's a contradiction矛盾.
