ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Charlie Todd - Comedian
Charlie Todd is the creator of Improv Everywhere, a group that creates absurd and joyful public scenes.

Why you should listen

Bored by a temp job, and tired of waiting for someone to give him a stage, comedian Charlie Todd decided to make his own. So he walked into a bar and pretended to be musician Ben Folds. It went so well that it inspired him to create Improv Everywhere, "a New York City-based prank collective that causes scenes of chaos and joy in public places."

Todd has produced, directed, performed, and documented the group’s work for over ten years. In that time they've run over 100 prank missions, some involving hundreds or thousands of agents, and each one creating a wonderful and irreproducible experience.

He's a performer at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in New York City, and is the author of Causing a Scene.

Watch our photographer's view of the TED2012 prank ... and see how Improv Everywhere pulled it off with the help of a few willing TEDsters ...

Charlie Todd proporciona inesperadas, hilariantes e bizarras cenas públicas. I started Improv Everywhere about 10 years ago

3000
Eu comecei Improv Everywhere cerca de 10 anos atrás
00:18
when I moved to New York City with an interest in acting and comedy.
1
3000
3000
00:21
Because I was new to the city, I didn't have access to a stage,
2
6000
3000
00:24
so I decided to create my own in public places.
3
9000
3000
então eu decidi criar o meu próprio em espaços públicos.
00:27
So the first project we're going to take a look at
4
12000
2000
00:29
is the very first No Pants Subway Ride.
5
14000
2000
00:31
Now this took place in January of 2002.
6
16000
2000
Isto aconteceu em janeiro de 2002.
00:33
And this woman is the star of the video.
7
18000
2000
E esta mulher é a estrela deste vídeo.
00:35
She doesn't know she's being filmed.
8
20000
2000
Ela não sabe que está sendo filmada.
00:37
She's being filmed with a hidden camera.
9
22000
2000
00:39
This is on the 6 train in New York City.
10
24000
2000
00:41
And this is the first stop along the line.
11
26000
2000
00:43
These are two Danish guys
12
28000
2000
Estes dois caras são dinamarqueses
00:45
who come out and sit down next to the hidden camera.
13
30000
3000
que vieram e sentaram próximo à câmera escondida.
00:48
And that's me right there in a brown coat.
14
33000
2000
00:50
It's about 30 degrees outside.
15
35000
2000
00:52
I'm wearing a hat. I'm wearing a scarf.
16
37000
2000
Eu estou usando um chapéu. Eu estou usando um cachecol.
00:54
And the girl's going to notice me right here.
17
39000
3000
E a garota vai me ver lá.
00:59
(Laughter)
18
44000
6000
Risos
01:05
And as you'll see now, I'm not wearing pants.
19
50000
2000
01:07
(Laughter)
20
52000
3000
Risos
01:10
So at this point --
21
55000
2000
Então nesse ponto -
01:12
at this point she's noticed me,
22
57000
2000
nesse ponto ela está me observando
01:14
but in New York there's weirdos on any given train car.
23
59000
2000
01:16
One person's not that unusual.
24
61000
2000
01:18
She goes back to reading her book, which is unfortunately titled "Rape."
25
63000
3000
01:21
(Laughter)
26
66000
4000
Risos
01:25
So she's noticed the unusual thing,
27
70000
2000
Então ela notou esta coisa incomum,
01:27
but she's gone back to her normal life.
28
72000
2000
mas ela volta a sua vida normal.
01:29
Now in the meantime, I have six friends
29
74000
2000
Nesse meio tempo, eu tenho seis amigos
01:31
who are waiting at the next six consecutive stops in their underwear as well.
30
76000
3000
01:35
They're going to be entering this car one by one.
31
80000
2000
01:37
We'll act as though we don't know each other.
32
82000
3000
01:40
And we'll act as if it's just an unfortunate mistake we've made,
33
85000
3000
01:43
forgetting our pants on this cold January day.
34
88000
3000
esquecendo nossas calças neste dia frio de janeiro.
01:46
(Laughter)
35
91000
25000
Risos
02:11
So at this point,
36
116000
2000
Então nesse ponto,
02:13
she decides to put the rape book away.
37
118000
2000
ela decide guardar o livro de estupro.
02:15
(Laughter)
38
120000
2000
Risos
02:17
And she decides to be a little bit more aware of her surroundings.
39
122000
4000
02:21
Now in the meantime, the two Danish guys to the left of the camera,
40
126000
2000
02:23
they're cracking up.
41
128000
2000
eles estão dando gargalhadas.
02:25
They think this is the funniest thing they've ever seen before.
42
130000
2000
02:27
And watch her make eye contact with them right about now.
43
132000
3000
E observem ela fazendo contato visual com eles agora.
02:35
(Laughter)
44
140000
2000
Risos
02:37
And I love that moment in this video,
45
142000
2000
E eu adoro este momento neste vídeo,
02:39
because before it became a shared experience,
46
144000
3000
02:42
it was something that was maybe a little bit scary,
47
147000
3000
02:45
or something that was at least confusing to her.
48
150000
2000
02:47
And then once it became a shared experience,
49
152000
2000
02:49
it was funny and something that she could laugh at.
50
154000
2000
02:51
So the train is now pulling into
51
156000
2000
Então o trem está entrando agora
02:53
the third stop along the 6 line.
52
158000
2000
na terceira parada da linha 6.
03:09
(Laughter)
53
174000
3000
Risos
03:12
So the video won't show everything.
54
177000
2000
O vídeo não vai mostrar tudo
03:14
This goes on for another four stops.
55
179000
2000
Isto continua por mais quatro estações.
03:16
A total of seven guys enter anonymously in their underwear.
56
181000
4000
03:20
At the eighth stop, a girl came in with a giant duffel bag
57
185000
2000
03:22
and announced she had pants for sale for a dollar --
58
187000
3000
03:25
like you might sell batteries or candy on the train.
59
190000
3000
03:28
We all very matter of factly bought a pair of pants, put them on
60
193000
3000
03:31
and said, "Thank you. That's exactly what I needed today,"
61
196000
3000
e falamos, "Muito obrigado. Era exatamente o que eu estava precisando hoje".
03:34
and then exited without revealing what had happened
62
199000
3000
03:37
and went in all different directions.
63
202000
2000
e seguimos em direções diferentes.
03:39
(Applause)
64
204000
2000
Aplausos
03:41
Thank you.
65
206000
2000
Obrigado.
03:45
So that's a still from the video there.
66
210000
2000
Então esta é uma cena do vídeo.
03:47
And I love that girl's reaction so much.
67
212000
2000
03:49
And watching that videotape later that day
68
214000
2000
E olhando aquele vídeo mais tarde naquele dia
03:51
inspired me to keep doing what I do.
69
216000
2000
me inspirou a continuar fazendo o que eu faço.
03:53
And really one of the points of Improv Everywhere
70
218000
3000
03:56
is to cause a scene in a public place
71
221000
2000
é provocar uma cena num espaço público
03:58
that is a positive experience for other people.
72
223000
2000
04:00
It's a prank, but it's a prank that gives somebody a great story to tell.
73
225000
3000
04:03
And her reaction inspired me
74
228000
2000
E a reação dela me inspirou
04:05
to do a second annual No Pants Subway Ride.
75
230000
2000
a fazer a segunda "Corrida anual Sem Calças no Metrô".
04:07
And we've continued to do it every year.
76
232000
2000
E nós a temos feito continuamente todos os anos.
04:09
This January, we did the 10th annual No Pants Subway Ride
77
234000
2000
Neste janeiro, nós fizemos a 10a. "Corrida anual de Sem Calças no Metrô"
04:11
where a diverse group of 3,500 people
78
236000
3000
onde um grupo diverso de 3.500 pessoas
04:14
rode the train in their underwear in New York --
79
239000
2000
04:16
almost every single train line in the city.
80
241000
2000
04:18
And also in 50 other cities around the world,
81
243000
2000
04:20
people participated.
82
245000
2000
pessoas perticiparam.
04:22
(Laughter)
83
247000
2000
Risos
04:24
As I started taking improv class at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theater
84
249000
3000
04:27
and meeting other creative people and other performers and comedians,
85
252000
3000
e encontrando outras pessoas criativas, outros atores e comediantes,
04:30
I started amassing a mailing list
86
255000
2000
04:32
of people who wanted to do these types of projects.
87
257000
2000
04:34
So I could do more large-scale projects.
88
259000
2000
Então eu pude fazer projetos de maior escala.
04:36
Well one day I was walking through Union Square,
89
261000
2000
04:38
and I saw this building,
90
263000
2000
e eu vi este edifício,
04:40
which had just been built in 2005.
91
265000
2000
que recém havia sido construído em 2005.
04:42
And there was a girl in one of the windows and she was dancing.
92
267000
3000
04:45
And it was very peculiar,
93
270000
2000
E isto era muito peculiar,
04:47
because it was dark out, but she was back-lit with florescent lighting,
94
272000
2000
04:49
and she was very much onstage,
95
274000
2000
04:51
and I couldn't figure out why she was doing it.
96
276000
2000
04:53
After about 15 seconds, her friend appeared --
97
278000
2000
04:55
she had been hiding behind a display --
98
280000
2000
04:57
and they laughed and hugged each other and ran away.
99
282000
2000
e elas riram e se abraçaram e saíram correndo.
04:59
So it seemed like maybe she had been dared to do this.
100
284000
2000
05:01
So I got inspired by that.
101
286000
2000
Então aquilo me inspirou.
05:03
Looking at the entire facade -- there were 70 total windows --
102
288000
2000
05:05
and I knew what I had to do.
103
290000
2000
e eu sabia o que eu tinha que fazer.
05:07
(Laughter)
104
292000
2000
Risos
05:09
So this project is called Look Up More. We had 70 actors dress in black.
105
294000
3000
Este projeto eu chamei "Procure Mais". Nós tinhamos 70 atores vestidos de preto.
05:12
This was completely unauthorized.
106
297000
2000
Isto foi completamente sem autorização.
05:14
We didn't let the stores know we were coming.
107
299000
2000
05:16
And I stood in the park giving signals.
108
301000
2000
E eu fiquei no parque fazendo sinais.
05:18
The first signal was for everybody to hold up these four-foot tall letters
109
303000
3000
05:21
that spelled out "Look Up More,"
110
306000
2000
que soletravam "Procure mais",
05:23
the name of the project.
111
308000
3000
o nome do projeto.
05:26
The second signal was for everybody to do Jumping jacks together.
112
311000
3000
05:29
You'll see that start right here.
113
314000
3000
Vocês verão isso começar agora.
05:32
(Laughter)
114
317000
2000
Risos
05:34
And then we had dancing. We had everyone dance.
115
319000
2000
E então nós temos a dança. Todos dançando.
05:36
And then we had dance solos where only one person would dance
116
321000
2000
E então nós temos a dança individual onde somente uma pessoa dançava
05:38
and everybody would point to them.
117
323000
2000
e todos apontavam para eles.
05:40
(Laughter)
118
325000
7000
Risos
05:47
So then I gave a new hand signal,
119
332000
2000
E então eu fiz um novo sinal,
05:49
which signaled the next soloist down below in Forever 21,
120
334000
3000
que sinalizava o próximo solista abaixo no Forever 21,
05:52
and he danced.
121
337000
2000
e ele dançou.
05:54
There were several other activities.
122
339000
2000
Houveram outras diversas atividades.
05:56
We had people jumping up and down,
123
341000
2000
Nós tinhamos pessoas pulando,
05:58
people dropping to the ground.
124
343000
2000
pessoas caindo no chão.
06:00
And I was standing just anonymously in a sweatshirt,
125
345000
2000
E eu estava lá anonimamente de suéter
06:02
putting my hand on and off of a trashcan
126
347000
2000
06:04
to signal the advancement.
127
349000
2000
para sinalizar o avanço das atividades.
06:06
And because it was in Union Square Park, right by a subway station,
128
351000
2000
06:08
there were hundreds of people by the end
129
353000
2000
havia centenas de pessoas por perto
06:10
who stopped and looked up
130
355000
2000
que paravam e olhavam para cima
06:12
and watched what we were doing.
131
357000
3000
e observavam o que nós estavamos fazendo.
06:16
There's a better photo of it.
132
361000
2000
Aí está uma foto melhor disso.
06:18
So that particular event
133
363000
2000
Então esse evento especial
06:20
was inspired by a moment
134
365000
2000
foi inspirado por um momento
06:22
that I happened to stumble upon.
135
367000
2000
que aconteceu comigo por acaso.
06:24
The next project I want to show
136
369000
2000
O próximo projeto que eu quero mostrar
06:26
was given to me in an email from a stranger.
137
371000
2000
06:28
A high school kid in Texas wrote me in 2006
138

3000
06:31
and said, "You should get as many people as possible
139
376000
2000
06:33
to put on blue polo shirts and khaki pants
140
378000
3000
e vesti-las em camisas pólo azuis e calças cáqui
06:36
and go into a Best Buy and stand around."
141

e eu disse, "Sim, você está certo.
06:48
I think I'll try to do that this weekend. Thank you."
146
393000
2000
Obrigado".
06:50
So here's the video.
147
395000
2000
Então aqui está o vídeo.
06:52
So again, this is 2005.
148
397000
2000
De novo, isto é em 2005.
06:54
This is the Best Buy in New York City.
149
399000
3000
06:57
We had about 80 people show up to participate,
150
402000
2000
06:59
entering one-by-one.
151
404000
2000
entrando uma a uma.
07:01
There was an eight year-old girl, a 10 year-old girl.
152
406000
2000
07:03
There was also a 65 year-old man
153
408000
2000
07:05
who participated.
154
410000
2000
que participaram.
07:07
So a very diverse group of people.
155
412000
2000
Então, um grupo bem diverso de pessoas.
07:09
And I told people, "Don't work. Don't actually do work.
156
414000
3000
E eu disse as pessoas. "Não trabalhem. Na verdade não façam nenhum trabalho.
07:12
But also, don't shop.
157
417000
2000
Mas também não comprem.
07:14
Just stand around and don't face products."
158
419000
2000
07:16
Now you can see the regular employees
159
421000
2000
Agora vocês podem ver os funcionários normais
07:18
by the ones that have the yellow tags on their shirt.
160
423000
2000
07:20
Everybody else is one of our actors.
161
425000
2000
Todos os outros são os nossos atores.
07:22
(Laughter)
162
427000
2000
Risos
07:24
The lower level employees thought it was very funny.
163
429000
2000
07:26
And in fact, several of them went to go get their camera from the break room
164
431000
2000
07:28
and took photos with us.
165
433000
2000
e tiraram fotos conosco.
07:30
A lot of them made jokes about trying to get us to go to the back
166
435000
3000
07:33
to get heavy television sets for customers.
167
438000
3000
para pegar televisores pesados para os clientes.
07:36
The managers and the security guards, on the other hand,
168
441000
3000
07:39
did not find it particularly funny.
169
444000
2000
não acharam isto particularmente divertido.
07:41
You can see them in this footage.
170
446000
2000
Vocês podem vê-los nesta tomada.
07:43
They're wearing either a yellow shirt or a black shirt.
171
448000
3000
Eles estão usando camisa amarela ou preta.
07:46
And we were there probably 10 minutes
172
451000
2000
E nós estivemos lá provavelmente por 10 minutos
07:48
before the managers decided to dial 911.
173
453000
2000
07:50
(Laughter)
174
455000
3000
Risos
07:53
So they started running around
175
458000
2000
Então eles começaram a circular
07:55
telling everybody the cops were coming, watch out, the cops were coming.
176
460000
3000
07:58
And you can see the cops in this footage right here.
177
463000
3000
08:01
That's a cop wearing black right there, being filmed with a hidden camera.
178
466000
3000
08:04
Ultimately, the police had to inform Best Buy management
179
469000
2000
08:06
that it was not, in fact, illegal
180
471000
2000
que, na verdade, não era ilegal
08:08
to wear a blue polo shirt and khaki pants.
181
473000
2000
vestir camisa pólo azul e calça cáqui.
08:10
(Laughter)
182
475000
2000

08:12
(Applause)
183
477000
4000
Aplausos
08:16
Thank you.
184
481000
2000
Obrigado.
08:18
(Applause)
185
483000
3000
Aplausos
08:21
So we had been there for 20 minutes; we were happy to exit the store.
186
486000
3000
08:24
One thing the managers were trying to do
187
489000
2000
08:26
was to track down our cameras.
188
491000
2000
era descobrir nossas câmeras.
08:28
And they caught a couple of my guys who had hidden cameras in duffel bags.
189
493000
3000
08:31
But the one camera guy they never caught
190
496000
2000
08:33
was the guy that went in just with a blank tape
191
498000
2000
08:35
and went over to the Best Buy camera department
192
500000
2000
08:37
and just put his tape in one of their cameras
193
502000
2000
08:39
and pretended to shop.
194
504000
3000
e simulou que estava comprando.
08:42
So I like that concept of using their own technology against them.
195
507000
3000
Eu gostei do conceito de usar a tecnologia deles contra eles mesmos.
08:45
(Laughter)
196

08:47
I think our best projects are ones that are site specific
197
512000
2000
08:49
and happen at a particular place for a reason.
198
514000
2000
08:51
And one morning, I was riding the subway.
199
516000
2000
E uma manhã, eu estava andando no metrô.
08:53
I had to make a transfer at the 53rd St. stop
200
518000
2000
08:55
where there are these two giant escalators.
201
520000
2000
onde há estas duas enormes escadas rolantes.
08:57
And it's a very depressing place to be in the morning, it's very crowded.
202
522000
3000
09:00
So I decided to try and stage something
203
525000
2000
Então eu decidi tentar e encenar alguma coisa
09:02
that could make it as happy as possible for one morning.
204
527000
3000
09:06
So this was in the winter of 2009 --
205
531000
2000
Isto foi no inverno de 2009 -
09:08
8:30 in the morning.
206
533000
2000
8:30 da manhã.
09:10
It's morning rush hour.
207
535000
2000
É a hora do rush da manhã,
09:12
It's very cold outside.
208
537000
2000
Está muito frio do lado de fora.
09:14
People are coming in from Queens,
209
539000
2000
Pessoas estão vindo do Queens,
09:16
transferring from the E train to the 6 train.
210
541000
3000
passando do trem E para o trem 6.
09:19
And they're going up these giant escalators
211
544000
2000
E eles estão subindo nesta escada rolante gigante
09:21
on their way to their jobs.
212
546000
3000
no seu caminho para o trabalho.

216

2000
Obrigado.
09:56
So there's a photograph that illustrates it a little bit better.
217
581000
3000
09:59
He gave 2,000 high fives that day,
218
584000
2000
Nós demos 2 mil "High Fives" ("Toca Aqui") aquele dia
10:01
and he washed his hands before and afterward
219
586000
2000
10:03
and did not get sick.
220
588000
2000
e não ficou doente.
10:05
And that was done also without permission,
221
590000
2000
E aquilo também foi feito sem permissão
10:07
although no one seemed to care.
222
592000
2000
embora ninguém parecia se importar.
10:09
So I'd say over the years,
223
594000
2000
Então eu diria ao passar dos anos
10:11
one of the most common criticisms I see of Improv Everywhere
224
596000
3000
10:14
left anonymously on YouTube comments
225
599000
2000
deixada anonimamente nos comentários do YouTube
10:16
is: "These people have too much time on their hands."
226
601000
3000
é: "Estas pessoas tem muito tempo disponível".
10:19
And you know, not everybody's going to like everything you do,
227
604000
3000
10:22
and I've certainly developed a thick skin thanks to Internet comments,
228
607000
2000
10:24
but that one's always bothered me,
229
609000
2000
mas aquele sempre me aborreceu,
10:26
because we don't have too much time on our hands.
230
611000
2000
porque nós não temos muito tempo disponível.
10:28
The participants at Improv Everywhere events
231

3000
Os participantes dos eventos do Improv Everywhere
10:31
have just as much leisure time as any other New Yorkers,
232
616000
2000

10:33
they just occasionally choose
233
618000
2000
eles apenas ocasionalmente escolhem
10:35
to spend it in an unusual way.
234
620000
2000
gastá-lo de uma maneira incomum.
10:37
You know, every Saturday and Sunday,
235
622000
2000
Vocês sabem, todos os sábados e domingos,
10:39
hundreds of thousands of people each fall
236
624000
2000
centenas de milhares de pessoas cada outono
10:41
gather in football stadiums to watch games.
237
626000
2000
10:43
And I've never seen anybody comment, looking at a football game,
238
628000
3000
10:46
saying, "All those people in the stands, they have too much time on their hands."
239
631000
3000
dizendo. "Todas estas pessoas nas arquibancadas, eles tem muito tempo disponível".
10:49
And of course they don't.
240
634000
2000
E sem dúvida eles não tem.
10:51
It's a perfectly wonderful way to spent a weekend afternoon,
241
636000
2000
10:53
watching a football game in a stadium.
242
638000
3000

10:56
But I think it's also a perfectly valid way
243
641000
2000
10:58
to spend an afternoon freezing in place with 200 people
244
643000
3000
passar uma tarde congelando com 200 pessoas
11:01
in the Grand Central terminal
245

11:23
You know, as kids, we're taught to play.
254
668000
3000
Vocês sabem, como crianças, nós somos ensinados a brincar.
11:26
And we're never given a reason why we should play.
255
671000
2000
11:28
It's just acceptable that play is a good thing.
256
673000
3000
11:31
And I think that's sort of the point of Improv Everywhere.
257
676000
3000
11:34
It's that there is no point and that there doesn't have to be a point.
258
679000
2000
11:36
We don't need a reason.
259
681000
2000
Nós não precisamos de um motivo.
11:38
As long as it's fun
260
683000
2000
Desde que seja divertido
11:40
and it seems like it's going to be a funny idea
261
685000
2000
11:42
and it seems like the people who witness it will also have a fun time,
262
687000
3000
11:45
then that's enough for us.
263
690000
2000
então isto é o suficiente para nós.
11:47
And I think, as adults, we need to learn
264
692000
2000
E eu acho, como adultos, nós precisamos aprender
11:49
that there's no right or wrong way to play.
265
694000
2000
11:51
Thank you very much.
