ABOUT THE SPEAKER
AJ Jacobs - Author
Immersing himself in alternate lifestyles and long, hilarious experiments (usually with himself the guinea pig), writer AJ Jacobs tests the limits of behavior, customs, culture, knowledge -- and his wife's sense of humor.

Why you should listen

AJ Jacobs' writings stand at the intersection of philosophy, Gonzo journalism and performance art. Stubbornly curious and slyly perceptive, he takes immersive learning to its irrational and profoundly amusing extreme -- extracting wisdom and meaning after long stints as a self-styled guinea pig. For his widely circulated Esquire article "My Outsourced Life," he explored the phenomenon of outsourcing by hiring a team in Bangalore to take care of every part of his life -- from reading his emails to arguing with his wife to reading bedtime stories to his own son. A previous article, "I Think You're Fat," chronicled a brief, cringe-inducing attempt to live his life in Radical Honesty, telling all the truth, all the time.

Jacobs is author of The Know-It-All, which documents the year he spent reading the Encyclopedia Britannica from A to Z, uncovering both funny and surprising factoids but also poignant insight into history and human nature. In 2007 he released The Year of Living Biblically, in which he attempted to follow every single rule in the Bible as literally as possible for an entire year. His recent book The Guinea Pig Diaries: My Life as an Experiment is a collection of numerous personal experiments. including living according to George Washington's rules of conduct, outsourcing every single task to India, and posing as a woman on an online dating site.

03:22
Because it allowed允許 me to focus焦點
60
190000
2256
03:24
on the hundreds數以百計 of things
that go right every一切 day,
61
192280
3336
03:27

03:30
And it reminded提醒 me of the astounding驚人

63
198400
6216
03:36
I learned學到了 dozens許多 of lessons教訓
during this project項目,
64
204640
3856
03:40
but let me just focus焦點 on five today今天.
65
208520
2896
03:43
The first is: look up.
66
211440
2896
03:46
I started開始 my trail落後 of gratitude感謝
67
214360
2016
03:48
by thanking表達感謝 the barista咖啡師
at my local本地 coffee咖啡 shop,
68
216400
3296
03:51
Joe Coffee咖啡 in New York紐約.
69
219720
1656
03:53
Her name名稱 is Chung,
70
221400
1696
03:55
and Chung is one of the most
upbeat樂觀 people you will ever meet遇到.
71
223120
4736
04:03
But even for Chung,
being存在 a barista咖啡師 is hard.
73
231240
3496
04:06
And that's because you are encountering遇到
people in a very dangerous危險 state.
74
234760
4896
04:11
(Laughter
75
239680
1256
04:12
You know what it is -- precaffeination
76
240960
2736
04:15
(Laughter
77
243720
2136
04:17
So, Chung has had people
yell叫喊 at her until直到 she cried哭了,
78
245880
3736
04:21
including包含 a nine-year-old九十歲 girl女孩,
79
249640
2016
04:23
who didn't like the whipped鞭打 cream奶油 design設計
that Chung did on her hot chocolate巧克力.
80
251680
4256
04:27
So I thanked感謝 Chung,
81
255960
2896
04:30
and she thanked感謝 me for thanking表達感謝 her.
82
258880
3175
04:34
I cut it off there.
83
262079
1257
04:35
I didn't want to go
into an infinite無窮 thanking表達感謝 loop循環.
84
263360
2416
04:37
(Laughter
85
265800
1576
04:39
But Chung said that the hardest最難 part部分
86
267400
3736
04:43
is when people don't even treat對待 her
like a human人的 being存在.
87
271160
3496
04:46
They treat對待 her like a vending自動售貨機 machine.
88
274680
1856
04:48
So, they'll他們會 hand her their credit信用 card
89
276560
2496
04:51
without even looking up from their phone電話.
90
279080
2816
04:53
And while she's saying this,
I'm realizing實現 I've doneDONE that.
91
281920
4816
04:58
I've been that a-holea 孔.
92
286760
1856
05:00
And at that moment時刻, I pledged承諾:
93
288640
2936
05:03
when dealing交易 with people,
I'm going to take those two seconds
94
291600
3296
05:06
and look at them, make eye contact聯繫.
95
294920
2856
05:09
Because it reminds提醒 you,
you're dealing交易 with a human人的 being存在
96
297800
2856
05:12
who has family家庭 and aspirations願望
97
300680
3736
05:16
and embarrassing尷尬 high school學校 memories回憶.
98
304440
2576
05:19
And that little moment時刻 of connection連接
99
307040
3056
05:22
is so important重要 to both people's人們
humanity人性 and happiness幸福.
100
310120
4696
05:26
Alright好的, second第二 lesson was:
101
314840
1776
05:28
smell the roses玫瑰. And the dirt污垢.
And the fertilizer
102
316640
4736
05:33
After Chung, I thanked感謝 this man.
103
321400
2736
05:36
This is Ed埃德 Kaufmann考夫曼.
104
324160
1856
05:38
And Ed埃德 is the one who chooses which哪一個 coffee咖啡
they serve服務 at my local本地 coffee咖啡 shop.
105
326040
5536
05:43
He goes around the world世界,
to South America美國, to Africa非洲,
106
331600
3656
05:47
finding發現 the best最好 coffee咖啡 beans.
107
335280
1816
05:49
So I thanked感謝 Ed埃德.
108
337120
1416
05:50
And in return返回, Ed埃德 showed顯示 me
how to taste味道 coffee咖啡 like a pro.
109
338560
5776
05:56
And it is quite相當 a ritual儀式.
110
344360
1936
05:58
You take your spoon
and you dip it in the coffee咖啡
111
346320
2256
06:00
and then you take a big, loud slurp斯魯普.
112
348600
2776
06:05
This is because you want
to spray噴霧 the coffee咖啡 all over your mouth.
114
353360
3296
06:08
You have taste味道 buds
in the side of your cheeks臉頰,
115
356680
3136
06:11
in the roof屋頂 of your mouth,
116
359840
1416
06:13
you've got to get them all.
117
361280
1536
06:14
So Ed埃德 would do this
118
362840
2736
06:17
and he would --
119
365600
2496
06:20
his face面對 would light up and he would say,
120
368120
2696
06:22
"This coffee咖啡 tastes口味 of honey-crisp蜂蜜脆 apple蘋果
121
370840
3976
06:26
and notes筆記 of soil and maple syrup糖漿."
122
374840
3536
06:30
And I would take a sip and I'd say,
123
378400
2616
06:33
"I'm picking選擇 up coffee咖啡.
124
381040
2736
06:35
(Laughter
125
383800
1816
06:37
It tastes口味 to me like coffee咖啡."
126
385640
1856
06:39
(Laughter
127
387520
2016
06:41
But inspired啟發 by Ed埃德, I decided決定 to really
128
389560
2936
06:44
let the coffee咖啡 sit on my tongue
for five seconds --
129
392520
3136
06:47
we're all busy,
but I could spare備用 five seconds,
130
395680
2216
06:49
and really think about the texture質地
and the acidity酸度 and the sweetness甜美.
131
397920
6536
06:56
And I started開始 to do it with other foods食品.
132
404480
2336

07:13
And slowing減緩 down time.
136
421240

07:16
So that life doesn't go by
in one big blur模糊, as it often經常 does.
137
424920
4776
07:21
Number three is:

07:23
find the hidden masterpieces名作

07:26
Now, one of my favorite
conversations對話 during this year
140
434200
2896
07:29
was with the guy who invented發明
my coffee咖啡 cup杯子 lid.
141
437120
4456
07:33
And until直到 this point,
142
441600
1656
07:35
I had given特定 approximately
zero thought to coffee咖啡 cup杯子 lids.
143
443280
4176
07:39
But I loved喜愛 talking
to this inventor發明者, Doug道格 Fleming弗萊明,
144
447480
3256
07:42
because he was so passionate多情.
145
450760
1856
07:44
And the blood血液 and sweat and tears眼淚
he put into this lid,
146
452640
3976
07:48
and that I had never even considered考慮.
147
456640
3296
07:51
He says a bad lid can ruin廢墟 your coffee咖啡.
148
459960
2856
07:54
That it can block the aroma
149
462840
1936
07:56
which哪一個 is so important重要 to the experience經驗.
150
464800
2256
07:59
So he -- he's very innovative創新.
151
467080
2536
08:01
He's like the Elon伊隆 Musk of coffee咖啡 lids.
152
469640
2056
08:03
(Laughter
153
471720
1016
08:04
So he designed設計 this lid
that's got an upside-down上下翻轉 hexagon六邊形
154
472760
4216
08:09
so you can get your nose鼻子 right in there
and get maximum最大值 aroma香氣.
155
477000
3976
08:13
And so I was delighted欣喜的 talking to him,
156
481000
3656
08:16
and it made製作 me realize實現 there are
hundreds數以百計 of masterpieces名作 all around us
157
484680
4616
08:21
that we totally完全 take for granted理所當然.
158
489320
1736
08:23
Like the on-off開關 switch開關 on my desk lamp
has a little indentation壓 痕 for my thumb拇指
159
491080
6456
08:29
that perfectly完美 fits適合 my thumb拇指.
160
497560
1776
08:31
And when something is doneDONE well,
161
499360
3216
08:34
the process處理 behind背後 it
08:37
But paying付款 attention注意 to it
163
505880
2216
08:40
can tap龍頭 into that sense of wonder奇蹟
and enrich豐富 our lives生活.
164
508120
4216
08:44
Number four is: fake it till直到 you feel it.
165
512360
2976
08:47
By the end結束 of the project項目,
I was just in a thanking表達感謝 frenzy發狂.
166
515360
3936
08:51
So I was -- I would get up
and spend a couple一對 hours小時,
167
519320
3176
08:54
I'd write emails電子郵件, send發送 notes筆記,
168
522520
3856
08:58
make phone電話 calls電話, visit訪問 people
169
526400
2536
09:00
to thank them for their role角色 in my coffee咖啡.
170
528960
2176
09:03
And some of them, quite相當 honestly老老實實 --
171
531160
2256
09:05
not that into it.
172
533440
1856
09:07
They would be like, "What is this?
173
535320
2256
09:09
Is this a pyramid金字塔 scheme方案,
what do you want, what are you selling銷售?"
174
537600
4160
09:14
But most people were surprisingly出奇 moved移動.
175
542560
4256
09:18
I remember記得, I called the woman女人
who does the pest蟲害 control控制
176
546840
3776
09:22
for the warehouse倉庫
where my coffee咖啡 is served提供服務 --
177
550640
3176
09:25
I'm sorry -- where my coffee咖啡 is stored存儲.
178
553840
2576
09:28
And I said,
179
556440
2456
我說:
09:30
"This may可能 sound聲音 strange奇怪,
180
558920
1496
09:32
but I want to thank you
for keeping保持 the bugs蟲子 out of my coffee咖啡."
181
560440
4376
09:36
And she said, "Well,
that does sound聲音 strange奇怪,
182
564840
2616
09:39
but you just made製作 my day."
183
567480
2096
09:41
And it was like an anti-crank防曲柄 phone電話 call.
184
569600
3576
09:45
And it didn't just affect影響 her,
it affected受影響 me.
185
573200
3376
09:48
Because I would wake喚醒 up every一切 morning早上
in my default默認 mood心情, which哪一個 is grumpiness脾氣暴躁,
186
576600
5976
09:54
but I would force myself
to write a thank-you謝謝你 note注意
187
582600
3256
09:57
and then another另一個 and then another另一個.
188
585880
2096
10:00
And what I found發現 was
that if you act法案 as if you're grateful感激,
189
588000
4816
10:04
you eventually終於 become成為 grateful感激 for real真實.
190
592840
3016
10:07
The power功率 of our actions行動
to change更改 our mind心神 is astounding驚人.
191
595880
4896
10:12
So, often經常 we think
that thought changes變化 behavior行為,
192
600800
4056
10:16
but behavior行為 very often經常
changes變化 our thought.
193
604880
4200
10:22
And finally最後, the last lesson
I want to tell you about is:
194
610720
4456
10:27
practice實踐 six degrees of gratitude感謝.
195
615200
3416
10:30
And every一切 place地點, every一切 stop
on this gratitude感謝 trail落後
196
618640
4576
10:35
would give birth分娩 to 100 other people
that I could thank.
197
623240
3896
10:39
So I went down to Colombia哥倫比亞 to thank
the farmers農民 who grow增長 my coffee咖啡 beans.
198
627160
5256
10:44
And it was in a small mountain town,
199
632440
2216
10:46
and I was driven驅動 there
10:51
And every一切 time
we went around a hairpin髮夾 turn
201
639880
3736
10:55
the driver司機 would do the sign標誌 of the cross交叉.
202
643640
3656
10:59
And I was like, "Thank you for that.
203
647320
2856
11:02
(Laughter
204
650200
1816
11:04
But can you do that
while keeping保持 your hands on the wheel?
205
652040
3816
11:07
Because I am terrified."
206
655880
1576
11:09
But we made製作 it.
207
657480
1216
11:10
And I met會見 the farmers農民,
11:14
It's a small farm農場, they make great coffee咖啡,

11:17

fair-trade公平交易 prices價格 for it.
210
665520
2896
11:20
And they showed顯示 me
how the coffee咖啡 is grown長大的.
211
668440
3016
11:23
The bean is actually其實 inside

212
671480

11:28
And I thanked感謝 them.
213
676080
2176
11:30
And they said,
"Well, we couldn't不能 do our job工作
214
678280
3216

11:55
And it just drove開車 home
221
703280

11:58
that it doesn't take a village
to make a cup杯子 of coffee咖啡.
222
706440
3576

12:52
We'll be so, "Oh, everything's一切的

238
760960

12:56
Well, it turns out, the opposite對面 is true真正.
239
764640

13:01
The research研究 shows節目

13:23
But I'm better than I was

248
791680

13:27
And that's because it made製作 me aware知道的
249

13:34
It reminded提醒 me
