37
85000
3000
01:43
One person wrote書きました in, "When I win勝つ, I'm going to buy購入 my own自分の little mountain

01:50
And another別の person wrote書きました, "I would fill埋める a big大きい bathtubバスタブ with moneyお金
41
95000

01:53

43
100000

01:57
This is even worse悪化する now: "Then I'd have a picture画像 taken撮影
44
102000
2000
01:59

02:06
(Laughter
48
111000
3000
02:09
And so manyたくさんの of the commentsコメント were exactly正確に of this typeタイプ,
49
114000
2000
02:11
where people got moneyお金
50
116000
2000
02:13
and, in fact事実, it made them antisocial反社会的.
51
118000
2000
02:15
So I told you that it ruins遺跡 people's人々の lives人生 and that their彼らの friends友達 bugバグ them.
52
120000
3000
02:18
It alsoまた、, moneyお金 oftenしばしば makes作る us feel very selfish利己的
53
123000
2000
02:20
and we do things only for ourselves自分自身.
54
125000
2000
02:22
Well maybe the reason理由 that moneyお金 doesn't make us happyハッピー
55
127000
2000
02:24
is that we're always spending支出 it on the wrong違う things,
56
129000
2000
02:26
and in particular特に, that we're always spending支出 it on ourselves自分自身.
57
131000
3000
02:29
And we thought, I wonderワンダー what would happen起こる
58
134000
2000
02:31
if we made people spend費やす more of their彼らの moneyお金 on other people.
59
136000
2000
02:33
So instead代わりに of beingであること antisocial反社会的 with your moneyお金,
60
138000
3000
02:36
what if you were a little more prosocialプロソニック with your moneyお金?
61
141000
2000
02:38
And we thought, let's make people do it and see what happens
62
143000
2000
02:40
So let's have some people do what they usually通常 do
63
145000
2000
02:42
and spend費やす moneyお金 on themselves自分自身,
64
147000
2000
02:44
and let's make some people give moneyお金 away,
65
149000
2000
02:46
and measure測定 their彼らの happiness幸福 and see if, in fact事実, they get happierもっと幸せな.
66
151000
3000
02:49
So the first way that we did this.
67
154000
2000
02:51
On one Vancouverバンクーバー morning, we went行った out on the campusキャンパス
68
156000
2000
02:53
at University大学 of Britishイギリス人 Columbiaコロンビア
69
158000
2000
02:55
and we approachedアプローチした people and said, "Do you want to be in an experiment実験?"
70
160000
2000
02:57
They said, "Yes."
71
162000
2000
02:59
We asked尋ねた them how happyハッピー they were, and then we gave与えた them an envelopeエンベロープ.
72
164000
3000
03:02
And one of the envelopes封筒 had things in it that said,
73
167000
2000
03:04
"By 5:00 pm午後 today今日, spend費やす this moneyお金 on yourselfあなた自身."
74
169000
3000
03:07
So we gave与えた some examples of what you could spend費やす it on.
75
172000
3000
03:10
Other people, in the morning, got a slipスリップ of paper that said,
76
175000
2000
03:12
"By 5:00 pm午後 today今日, spend費やす this moneyお金 on somebody誰か elseelse."
77
177000
3000
03:15
Alsoまた、 inside内部 the envelopeエンベロープ was moneyお金.
78
180000
2000
03:17
And we manipulated操作された how much moneyお金 we gave与えた them.
79
182000
2000
03:19
So some people got this slipスリップ of paper and five dollarsドル.
80
184000
3000
03:22
Some people got this slipスリップ of paper and 20 dollarsドル.
81
187000
3000
03:25
We let them go about their彼らの day. They did whateverなんでも they wanted to do.
82
190000
3000
03:28
We found見つけた out that they did in fact事実 spend費やす it in the way that we asked尋ねた them to.
83
193000
3000
03:31
We calledと呼ばれる them up at night and asked尋ねた them,
84
196000
2000
03:33
"What'd you spend費やす it on, and how happyハッピー do you feel now?"
85
198000
2000
03:35
What did they spend費やす it on?
86
200000
2000
03:37
Well these are collegeカレッジ undergrads学部, so a lot of what they spent過ごした it on for themselves自分自身
87
202000
2000
03:39
were things like earringsイヤリング and makeup化粧.
88
204000
2000
03:41
One woman女性 said she bought買った a stuffedつめた animal動物 for her niece.
89
206000
3000
03:44
People gave与えた moneyお金 to homelessホームレス people.
90
209000
2000
03:46
Huge巨大 effect効果 here of Starbucksスターバックス.
91
211000
3000
03:49
(Laughter
92
214000
2000
03:51
So if you give undergraduates学部 five dollarsドル, it looks外見 like coffeeコーヒー to them
93
216000
3000
03:54
and they run走る over to Starbucksスターバックス and spend費やす it as fast速い as they can.
94
219000
3000
03:57
But some people bought買った a coffeeコーヒー for themselves自分自身, the way they usually通常 would,
95
222000
3000
04:00
but other people said that they bought買った a coffeeコーヒー for somebody誰か elseelse.
96
225000
2000
04:02
So the very same同じ purchase購入,
97
227000
2000
04:08
What did we find when we calledと呼ばれる them back at the end終わり of the day?
100
233000
2000
04:10
People who spent過ごした moneyお金 on other people got happierもっと幸せな.
101
235000
2000
04:12
People who spent過ごした moneyお金 on themselves自分自身, nothing happened起こった.
102
237000
2000
04:14
It didn't make them lessもっと少なく happyハッピー, it just didn't do much for them.
103
239000
3000
04:17
And the other thing we saw is the amount of moneyお金 doesn't matter問題 that much.
104
242000
3000
04:20
So people thought that 20 dollarsドル would be way better than five dollarsドル.
105
245000
3000
04:23
In fact事実, it doesn't matter問題 how much moneyお金 you spent過ごした.
106
248000
3000
04:26
What really matters問題 is that you spent過ごした it on somebody誰か elseelse
107
251000
2000
04:28
ratherむしろ than on yourselfあなた自身.
108
253000
2000
04:30
We see this again and again
109
255000
2000
04:32
when we give people moneyお金 to spend費やす on other people instead代わりに of on themselves自分自身.
110
257000
3000
04:35
Of courseコース, these are undergraduates学部 in Canadaカナダ --
111
260000
2000
04:37
not the world's世界の most最も representative代表 population人口.
112
262000
2000
04:39
They're alsoまた、 fairlyかなり wealthy裕福な and affluent豊かな and all these other sortsソート of things.
113
264000
3000
04:42
We wanted to see if this holds保持 true真実 everywhereどこにでも in the world世界
114
267000
3000
04:45
or just among wealthy裕福な countries.
115
270000
2000
04:47
So we went行った, in fact事実, to Ugandaウガンダ and ran走った a very similar類似 experiment実験.
116
272000
2000
04:49
So imagine想像する, instead代わりに of just people in Canadaカナダ,
117
274000
2000
04:51
we said, "Name the last time you spent過ごした moneyお金 on yourselfあなた自身 or other people.
118
276000
3000
How happyハッピー did it make you?"
119
279000
2000
04:56
Or in Ugandaウガンダ, "Name the last time you spent過ごした moneyお金
120
281000
2000
04:58
on yourselfあなた自身 or other people and describe説明する that."
121
283000
3000
05:01
And then we asked尋ねた them how happyハッピー they are again.
122
286000
2000
05:03
And what we see is sortソート of amazing素晴らしい
123
288000
2000
05:05
because there's human人間 universalsユニバーサル on what you do with your moneyお金
124
290000
2000
05:07
and then realリアル cultural文化的 differences相違 on what you do as well.
125
292000
3000
05:10
So for example,
126
295000
2000
例えば
05:12
one guy from Ugandaウガンダ says言う this.
127
297000
2000
05:14
He said, "I calledと呼ばれる a girl女の子 I wished望む to love."
128
299000
2000
05:16
They basically基本的に went行った out on a date日付,
129
301000
2000
05:18
and he says言う at the end終わり that he didn't "achieve達成する" her up tillまで now.
130
303000
3000
05:21
Here'sここにいる a guy from Canadaカナダ.
131
306000
3000
05:24
Very similar類似 thing.
132
309000
2000
05:26
"I took取った my girlfriendガールフレンド out for dinnerディナー.
133
311000
2000
05:28
We went行った to a movie映画, we left early早い,
134
313000
2000
05:30
and then went行った back to her roomルーム for ... " only cakeケーキ -- just a pieceピース of cakeケーキ.
135
315000
