Why you should listen

Louie Schwartzberg is a cinematographer, director and producer whose career spans more than four decades of providing breathtaking imagery using his time-lapse, high-speed and macro cinematography techniques. Schwartzberg tells stories that celebrate life and reveal the mysteries and wisdom of nature, people and places.

Schwartzberg's recent theatrical releases include the 3D IMAX film, Mysteries of the Unseen World with National Geographic, narrated by Forest Whitaker, and the documentary Wings of Life for Disneynature, narrated by Meryl Streep. Mysteries of the Unseen World is a journey into invisible worlds that are too slow, too fast, too small and too vast for the human eye to see, while Wings of Life focuses on pollination and the web of life. Schwartzberg also directed Soarin' Around the World, an international update to the original Soarin' ride now showing at Disney Parks in Anaheim, Orlando and Shanghai.

Designed to inspire, educate and evolve our perspective on the world, Schwartzberg creates and curates Moving Art videos, which can be found on your smart phone and Netflix. The Moving Art series will be expanded from six to thirteen videos in early 2017.

Schwartzberg's Gratitude Revealed series of shorts were launched on Oprah.com. Supported by the Templeton Foundation, with science and analytics by the Greater Good Center at UC Berkeley, the series explores the multifaceted virtues of gratitude. Schwartzberg is the first filmmaker to be inducted into the Association for the Advancement of Science and the Lemelson Foundation’s Invention Ambassadors Program.

For Schwartzberg, the greatest satisfaction is creating works that can have a positive effect on the future of the planet. "I hope my films inspire and open people's hearts," he says. "Beauty is nature's tool for survival -- we protect what we love. Nature's beauty can open hearts, and the shift in consciousness we need to sustain and celebrate life."

00:18
You know, I think there might be some presentations
1
3000
2000
00:20
that will go over my head,
2
5000
2000
00:22
but the most amazing concepts
3
7000
2000
00:24
are the ones that go right under my feet.
4
9000
3000
00:27
The little things in life,
5
12000
2000
00:29
sometimes that we forget about,
6
14000
2000
00:31
like pollination, that we take for granted.
7
16000
3000
00:34
And you can't tell the story about pollinators --
8
19000
3000
00:37
bees, bats, hummingbirds, butterflies --
9
22000
3000
00:40
without telling the story about the invention of flowers
10
25000
3000
00:43
and how they co-evolved

I've been filming time-lapse flowers

24 hours a day, seven days a week,

00:54
To watch them move

00:56
is a dance I'm never going to get tired of.

Beauty and seduction, I believe,

01:04
is nature's tool for survival,
20
49000
3000
01:07
because we will protect what we fall in love with.
21
52000
3000

Their relationship

01:15
It reminds us that we are a part of nature,
24
60000
3000
01:18
and we're not separate from it.
25
63000
2000
01:20
When I heard about the vanishing bees, Colony Collapse Disorder,
26
65000

Colony Collapse Disorder,
01:24
it motivated me to take action.
27
69000
2000
01:26
We depend on pollinators
28
71000
2000
01:28
for over a third of the fruits and vegetables we eat.
29
73000
4000
01:32
And many scientists believe
30
77000
2000
01:34
it's the most serious issue facing mankind.
31
79000
3000
01:37
It's like the canary in the coalmine.
32
82000
2000
01:39
If they disappear, so do we.
33
84000
3000
01:42
It reminds us that we are a part of nature
34
87000
2000
01:44
and we need to take care of it.
35
89000
3000
01:48
What motivated me to film their behavior
36
93000
3000
01:51
was something that I asked my scientific advisers:
37
96000
3000
01:54
"What motivates the pollinators?"
38
99000
3000
01:57
Well, their answer was,
39
102000
2000
01:59
"It's all about risk and reward."
40
104000
3000
02:02
Like a wide-eyed kid, I'd say, "Why is that?"
41
107000
3000
02:05
And they'd say, "Well, because they want to survive."
42
110000
2000
02:07
I go, "Why?"
43
112000
2000
02:09
"Well, in order to reproduce."
44
114000
2000
02:11
"Well, why?"
45
116000
2000
02:13
And I thought that they'd probably say, "Well, it's all about sex."
46
118000
3000
02:17
And Chip Taylor, our monarch butterfly expert,
47
122000
3000
02:20
he replied, "Nothing lasts forever.
48
125000
4000
02:24
Everything in the universe wears out."
49
129000
2000
02:26
And that blew my mind.
50
131000
2000
02:28
Because I realized
51
133000
2000
02:30
that nature had invented reproduction
52
135000
2000
02:32
as a mechanism for life to move forward,
53
137000
3000
02:35
as a life force that passes right through us
54
140000
4000
02:39
and makes us a link in the evolution of life.
55
144000
4000
02:43
Rarely seen by the naked eye,
56
148000
2000
02:45
this intersection
57
150000
2000
02:47
between the animal world and the plant world
58
152000
2000
02:49
is truly a magic moment.
59
154000
2000
02:51
It's the mystical moment
60
156000
2000
02:53
where life regenerates itself,
61
158000
2000
02:55
over and over again.
62
160000
3000
02:58
So here is some nectar from my film.
63
163000
3000
03:01
I hope you'll drink, tweet
64
166000
2000
03:03
