Did you know that one
of the first fertility drugs
0
786
4142
Você sabia que uma das primeiras
drogas de fertilização
00:16
was made from the pee of Catholic nuns,
1
4952
4357
foi feita do xixi de freiras católicas,
e que até o Papa se envolveu?
00:21
and that even the Pope got involved?
2
9333
2270
00:24
So, this is totally true.
3
12429
1532
Então, essa é a pura verdade.
00:25
Back in the 1950s, scientists knew
that when women enter menopause,
4
13985
5918
Nos anos de 1950,
os cientistas sabiam que quando
as mulheres entram na menopausa,
00:31
they start releasing high levels
of fertility hormones in their urine.
5
19927
4523
elas começam a liberar altos níveis
de hormônios de fertilidade pela urina.
00:36
But there was this doctor
named Bruno Lunenfeld,
6
24474
2616
Mas foi um médico chamado Bruno Lunefeld
que imaginou se ele conseguiria de fato
isolar esses hormônios da urina
00:39
who wondered if he could actually
isolate those hormones from the urine
7
27114
4200
e usá-los para ajudar mulheres
com dificuldade para engravidar.
00:43
and use it to help women
who are having trouble getting pregnant.
8
31338
3564
O problema, obviamente,
era que, para testar essa ideia,
00:46
Obviously, the problem with this
was that in order to test this idea,
9
34926
3643
ele precisava de muito xixi
de mulheres mais idosas.
00:50
he needed a lot of pee from older women.
10
38593
4598
00:55
And that is not an easy thing to find.
11
43215
2154
E isso não é algo fácil de achar.
00:57
So he and his colleagues
got special permission from the Pope
12
45950
5421
Então ele e seus colegas conseguiram
uma permissão especial do Papa
para coletar galões e galões de urina
01:03
to collect gallons and gallons of urine
13
51395
3920
de centenas de senhoras freiras católicas.
01:07
from hundreds of older Catholic nuns.
14
55339
3241
01:11
And in doing so,
15
59228
1825
E ao fazer isso,
ele conseguiu isolar os hormônios
01:13
he actually isolated hormones
16
61077
1997
01:15
that are still used to help women
get pregnant today,
17
63098
3061
que ainda hoje são usados
para ajudar mulheres a engravidar,
01:18
though now, they can be
synthesized in a lab,
18
66183
2820
apesar de que hoje eles podem ser
sintetizados em um laboratório,
01:21
and gallons of pee aren't necessary.
19
69027
3051
e galões de urina
não são mais necessários.
Então por que estou aqui no palco,
01:24
So why am I standing up here,
20
72943
1713
01:26
telling this wonderfully
intellectual audience about nun pee?
21
74680
5945
falando sobre xixi de freira
para um público superintelectual?
01:33
Well, I'm a science journalist
and multimedia producer,
22
81053
3379
Bem, sou jornalista científica
e produtora de multimídia,
e sempre fui fascinada
por coisas repugnantes.
01:36
who has always been
fascinated by gross stuff.
23
84456
3836
01:41
So fascinated, in fact,
that I started a weekly YouTube series
24
89059
4040
Tão fascinada, por sinal, que criei
uma série semanal no YouTube
01:45
called "Gross Science,"
25
93123
1803
chamada "Gross Science",
01:46
all about the slimy, smelly,
creepy underbelly
26
94950
4111
só sobre o que é viscoso,
fedorento e arrepiante
da natureza, medicina e tecnologia.
01:51
of nature, medicine and technology.
27
99085
2523
01:54
Now, I think most of us would agree
28
102482
1706
Acho que muitos de nós concordaria
que há algo de repugnante no xixi.
01:56
that there's something
a little gross about pee.
29
104212
2848
01:59
You know, it's something
that we don't really like to talk about,
30
107084
3081
É algo sobre o qual
não gostamos de falar muito,
e o ato de fazer xixi é bem reservado.
02:02
and we keep the act
of doing it very private.
31
110189
3396
Mas quando Lunenfeld
investigou o mundo do xixi,
02:05
But when Lunenfeld
peered into the world of pee,
32
113609
3516
02:09
he discovered something
deeply helpful to humanity.
33
117149
3555
ele descobriu algo imensamente útil
para a humanidade.
02:12
And after a year and a half
of making my show,
34
120728
4040
E após um ano e meio fazendo meu show,
eu posso dizer que muitas vezes,
ao explorarmos o lado repugnante da vida,
02:16
I can tell you that very often
when we explore the gross side of life,
35
124792
4554
descobrimos coisas que nunca
teríamos imaginado encontrar,
02:21
we find insights that we never
would have thought we'd find,
36
129370
3146
02:24
and we even often reveal beauty
that we didn't think was there.
37
132540
3754
e até, muitas vezes, revelamos uma beleza
que não sabíamos que existia.
02:28
I think it's important for us to talk
about gross things for a few reasons.
38
136720
4378
Acho importante falarmos
de coisas repugnantes por algumas razões.
02:33
So, first of all,
talking about gross stuff
39
141122
2723
Então, primeiramente,
falar de coisas repugnantes
02:35
is a great tool for education,
40
143869
2674
é uma ótima ferramenta para a educação,
e é um excelente modo
de manter a curiosidade.
02:38
and it's an excellent way
to preserve curiosity.
41
146567
3325
Para explicar isso,
02:42
To explain what I mean,
42
150474
1165
vou contar a vocês um pouco
de como eu era quando criança.
02:43
why don't I tell you a little bit
about what I was like as a child?
43
151663
3974
02:48
So, I was what you might call a gross kid.
44
156129
4261
Eu era o que se podia chamar
de criança nojenta.
02:53
In fact, my love of science itself
45
161116
2977
Na verdade, o meu amor pela ciência em si
começou quando meus pais me compraram
um kit viscoso de ciências,
02:56
began when my parents bought me
a slime chemistry set
46
164117
3849
02:59
and was then only enhanced
47
167990
2587
e que só aumentou
ao fazer experimentos repugnantes
na minha classe de biologia do sexto ano.
03:02
by doing gross experiments
in my sixth-grade biology class.
48
170601
3365
03:05
We did things like, we swabbed
surfaces around our classroom
49
173990
4532
Fazíamos coisas como colher resíduos
do chão da sala de aula com cotonetes
03:10
and cultured the bacteria we'd collected,
50
178546
2483
e fazer a cultura das bactérias coletadas,
03:13
and we dissected owl pellets,
51
181053
2159
e dissecar grânulos de corujas,
03:15
which are these balls of material
that are undigested that owls barf up,
52
183236
5365
que são umas bolinhas de substâncias
que as corujas não digerem e vomitam,
e são realmente meio nojentas,
incríveis e legais.
03:20
and it's really kind of gross
and awesome and cool.
53
188625
2787
Agora, o fato de eu ser obcecada
por coisas repugnantes na infância
03:24
Now, the fact that I was obsessed
with gross stuff as a kid
54
192204
2779
03:27
is not so revolutionary.
55
195007
1396
não é tão revolucionário.
Um monte de criança adora coisas nojentas,
03:28
You know, lots of kids
are really into gross things,
56
196427
2785
como brincar na lama,
colecionar insetos ou comer meleca.
03:31
like playing in dirt or collecting beetles
or eating their boogers.
57
199236
5575
03:36
And why is that?
58
204835
1896
E por quê?
03:38
I think really little kids
are like little explorers.
59
206755
3897
Acho que na verdade as criancinhas
são como pequenos exploradores.
Elas só querem experimentar
o máximo que puderem
03:42
They just want to experience
as much as they can
60
210676
3139
e não têm nenhuma ideia de que tocar
03:45
and don't have any idea
about the relative acceptability
61
213839
3143
uma joaninha não é a mesma coisa
que tocar uma maria-fedida.
03:49
of touching a ladybug versus a stinkbug.
62
217006
3897
Elas só querem entender
como todas as coisas funcionam
03:52
They just want to understand
how everything works
63
220927
2555
e experimentar o máximo
que puderem da vida.
03:55
and experience as much
of life as they can.
64
223506
2404
03:57
And that is pure curiosity.
65
225934
2300
E isso é curiosidade pura.
Mas então nós, adultos, aparecemos,
04:00
But then adults step in,
66
228973
1256
04:02
and we tell kids not to pick their noses
and not to touch the slugs or toads
67
230253
5131
e dizemos a elas para não cutucar o nariz
e não tocar as lesmas e sapos
ou qualquer outra coisa
que encontrem no quintal,
04:07
or whatever else they find
in the backyard,
68
235408
2272
pois essas coisas são repugnantes.
04:09
because those things are gross.
69
237704
1492
04:11
And we do that in part
to keep kids safe, right?
70
239641
2738
E em parte fazemos isso
para manter as crianças seguras, certo?
04:14
Like, maybe picking
your nose spreads germs
71
242403
3150
Talvez cutucar o nariz espalhe germes
e tocar naquele sapo te dê verrugas,
04:17
and maybe touching that toad
will give you warts,
72
245577
3405
apesar de que eu realmente
não acho que seja verdade.
04:21
even though I don't
actually think that's true.
73
249006
2238
04:23
You should feel free to touch
as many toads as you want.
74
251268
2642
Você deveria tocar quantos sapos quisesse.
Então, de certo modo, quando
as crianças crescem um pouco,
04:27
So at a certain point,
when kids get a little bit older,
75
255109
3722
04:30
there's this way
that engaging with gross stuff
76
258855
2359
mexer com coisas repugnantes
não se trata apenas de curiosidade,
04:33
isn't just about curiosity,
77
261238
1736
04:34
it's also about, sort of,
finding out where the limits are,
78
262998
2920
mas também de entender os limites,
ver até onde é aceitável.
04:37
pushing the boundaries of what's OK.
79
265942
2143
04:40
So, lots of kids of a certain age
will have burping competitions
80
268109
4810
Muitas crianças de certa idade
vão fazer competições de arroto
ou vão competir para ver
quem faz a careta mais nojenta.
04:44
or competitions to see
who can make the grossest face.
81
272943
2956
E elas fazem isso em parte
porque não devem fazer, certo?
04:48
And they do that in part because
it's a little bit transgressive, right?
82
276212
3790
Mas tem uma outra explicação
para definirmos coisas como repugnantes.
04:52
But there's another layer
to why we define stuff as gross.
83
280847
3563
Como humanos, nós ampliamos o conceito
de repugnância para a moralidade.
04:56
As humans, we've sort of extended
the concept of disgust to morality.
84
284434
6436
O psicólogo Paul Rozin diria
05:03
So, the psychologist Paul Rozin would say
85
291228
3119
que muitas das coisas
que definimos como repugnantes
05:06
that many of the things
we categorize as gross
86
294371
3285
são coisas que nos lembram
que somos apenas animais.
05:09
are things that reminds us
that we're just animals.
87
297680
3126
05:13
These are things like
bodily fluids and sex
88
301191
4563
Coisas como fluidos corporais e sexo
05:17
and physical abnormalities and death.
89
305778
3368
e anomalias físicas e morte.
E a ideia de que somos apenas animais
pode ser perturbadora,
05:21
And the idea that we're just animals
can be really unsettling,
90
309611
4236
porque nos lembra
de nossa própria mortalidade.
05:25
because it can be this reminder
of our own mortality.
91
313871
3738
E isso pode deixar muitos de nós
com uma profunda angústia existencial.
05:29
And that can leave many of us
with this deep existential angst.
92
317633
3907
05:34
Rozin would say that there's this way
93
322621
2192
Rozin diria que há um modo
em que a repugnância
e o ato de evitar coisas repugnantes
05:36
in which disgust
and the avoidance of gross things
94
324837
4375
05:41
becomes not just a way
to protect our bodies,
95
329236
3602
se torna não apenas uma forma
de proteger nosso corpo,
mas também uma forma
de proteger nossa alma.
05:44
it becomes a way to protect our souls.
96
332862
3229
05:48
I think at a certain point,
kids really begin to internalize
97
336966
2937
Acredito que, até certo ponto,
as crianças começam a internalizar
05:51
this link between
disgusting things and immorality.
98
339927
3975
esta ligação entre coisas
repugnantes e imoralidade.
05:55
And while I don't have any concrete data
to back up this next idea,
99
343926
5754
E mesmo não tendo nenhum dado concreto
que suporte esta outra ideia,
acredito que para muitos de nós,
isso acontece quando chegamos à puberdade.
06:01
I think that for a lot of us,
it happens around the time we hit puberty.
100
349704
4927
06:07
And you know -- yeah, I know.
101
355236
3997
E você sabe como é, sim, você sabe.
06:11
So during puberty,
our bodies are changing,
102
359744
3111
Então, durante a puberdade,
nosso corpo está mudando,
06:14
and we're sweating more,
and girls get their periods,
103
362879
3504
e suamos mais,
e as meninas ficam menstruadas,
06:18
and we're thinking about sex
in this way that we never did before.
104
366407
3159
e pensamos em sexo de uma maneira
que não pensávamos antes.
06:21
And through the human capacity
for abstraction,
105
369590
3238
E com a capacidade humana de abstrair,
você pode se sentir envergonhado.
06:24
this shame can settle in.
106
372852
2162
06:27
So we don't necessarily just think,
107
375038
2460
E não pensamos somente:
"Oh, meu Deus, tem alguma coisa realmente
repugnante acontecendo com meu corpo!"
06:29
"Oh, my goodness, something
really gross is happening to my body!"
108
377522
3207
06:32
We think, "Oh my God, maybe I'm gross.
109
380753
3641
Pensamos: "Oh, meu Deus,
talvez eu seja repugnante.
E talvez isso signifique que tem alguma
coisa ruim ou errada comigo".
06:36
And maybe that means that there's
something bad or wrong about me."
110
384418
4178
06:41
The thing is, that if you de facto
associate gross stuff with immorality,
111
389609
4651
A questão é que se você associar
coisas repugnantes à imoralidade de fato,
você perderá uma grande parte
da sua curiosidade,
06:46
you lose a huge part of your curiosity,
112
394284
2920
06:49
because there is so much
out there in the world
113
397228
2999
porque tem muita coisa no mundo
que é um pouco repugnante.
06:52
that is a little bit gross.
114
400251
1548
Pense, por exemplo,
num passeio na floresta.
06:53
Like, think about going
for a walk in the woods.
115
401823
2484
06:56
You could just pay attention
to the birds and the trees and the flowers
116
404331
4167
Você poderia apenas prestar atenção
aos pássaros, às árvores e às flores,
e tudo bem,
07:00
and that would be fine,
117
408522
1159
mas do meu ponto de vista, perderia
uma faceta muito maior e mais incrível
07:01
but in my view, you'd be missing
a bigger and more awesome picture
118
409705
4968
da vida neste planeta.
07:06
of life on this planet.
119
414697
1562
Há ciclos de decomposição
que impulsionam o crescimento da floresta,
07:08
There are cycles of decay
that are driving forest growth,
120
416283
3199
e há redes de fungos debaixo dos seus pés
07:11
and there are networks of fungus
beneath your feet
121
419506
3230
que estão literalmente conectando
todas as plantas ao seu redor.
07:14
that are connecting literally
all of the plants around you.
122
422760
3127
E isso é incrível.
07:17
That's really amazing.
123
425911
1333
07:19
So I feel like we should be talking
about gross stuff early and often
124
427268
4034
Então, sinto que deveríamos estar falando
de coisas nojentas mais cedo e mais vezes
07:23
with young people,
125
431326
1160
com os jovens,
para que eles sintam que realmente
podem acessar essa faceta maior
07:24
so they feel like they're actually
allowed to claim this bigger picture
126
432510
3376
da vida no nosso planeta.
07:27
of life on our planet.
127
435910
1911
A boa notícia é que para muitos de nós,
o fascínio com coisas repugnantes
07:30
The good news is that for many of us,
the fascination with gross stuff
128
438926
3484
07:34
doesn't exactly go away,
129
442434
1921
não desaparece de verdade,
só fingimos que ele não está mais lá.
07:36
we just kind of pretend
like it's not there.
130
444379
2460
07:38
But truthfully, we all spend
sort of a big part of our lives
131
446863
4286
Mas, de fato, todos passamos
uma grande parte de nossa vida
apenas tentando não sermos repugnantes.
07:43
just trying not to be gross.
132
451173
2403
Quando você pensa nisso de verdade,
07:45
When you really think about it,
133
453934
1509
07:47
we're sort of just like bags of fluids
and some weird tissues
134
455467
5475
somos apenas bolsas de fluidos
e alguns tecidos estranhos
07:52
surrounded by a thin layer of skin.
135
460966
2682
cercados por uma fina camada de pele.
E até certo ponto,
07:56
And to a certain extent,
136
464696
1857
múltiplas vezes ao dia, seja
consciente ou subconscientemente,
07:58
multiple times a day, whether
consciously or subconsciously,
137
466577
4111
tenho que me lembrar
de não soltar puns em público.
08:02
I need to remind myself
not to fart publicly.
138
470712
3626
(Risos)
08:06
(Laughter)
139
474362
1533
Estamos desesperadamente evitando
ser repugnantes o tempo todo,
08:07
You know, we're desperately trying
to avoid being gross all the time,
140
475919
3857
então acho que muitos de nós
sente esse prazer secreto
08:11
so I think many of us take
this kind of voyeuristic delight
141
479800
2853
em aprender sobre coisas nojentas.
08:14
in learning about gross things.
142
482677
1663
08:16
This is certainly true of kids;
143
484771
1770
Isso é bem verdade para as crianças:
08:18
the number of middle school teachers
who show my videos
144
486565
2614
o número de professores do fundamental
que mostra meus vídeos
08:21
in their science classes
145
489203
1178
nas aulas de ciências é uma prova disso.
08:22
is a testament to that.
146
490405
1219
08:23
But I think it's totally true
of adults, too.
147
491648
2707
Mas acho que vale para os adultos, também.
08:26
You know, I think we all love
hearing about gross stories,
148
494379
3191
Acredito que todos gostamos
de ouvir histórias repugnantes,
08:29
because it's a socially acceptable way
to explore the gross side of ourselves.
149
497594
5554
porque é um modo socialmente aceitável
de explorar o lado repugnante que temos.
Mas há esta outra razão
08:36
But there's this other reason
150
504309
1429
pela qual acho tão importante
falar de coisas repugnantes.
08:37
that I think talking about
gross stuff is so important.
151
505762
2572
08:40
A while back, I made a video
on tonsil stones -- sorry, everyone --
152
508358
5156
Pouco tempo atrás, fiz um vídeo
sobre cáseos amigdalianos, desculpem,
08:45
which are these balls of mucus
and bacteria and food
153
513538
5024
que são bolinhas de muco,
bactéria e comida
que se alojam nas amígdalas
e cheiram muito mal;
08:50
that get lodged in your tonsils
and they smell really terrible,
154
518586
2958
às vezes você as cospe e é horrível.
08:53
sometimes you cough them up
and it's like -- it's awful.
155
521568
3239
08:58
And many, many people
have experienced this.
156
526157
2563
E muitas pessoas já passaram por isso.
09:00
But many of the people
who have experienced this
157
528744
3349
Mas muitas delas não têm
um espaço para falar sobre isso.
09:04
haven't really had a forum
to talk about it.
158
532117
2055
E atualmente, esse é
o meu vídeo mais popular.
09:06
And today, this video that I made
is my most popular video.
159
534196
4270
Tem milhões de visualizações.
09:10
It has millions of views.
160
538490
2325
09:12
(Laughter)
161
540839
1984
(Risos)
E a sessão de comentários desse vídeo
tornou-se um tipo de sessão de autoajuda,
09:15
And the comment section for that video
became sort of like a self-help section,
162
543784
4730
na qual as pessoas podem falar
sobre seus cáseos amigdalianos
09:20
where people could talk about
their tonsil stone experiences
163
548538
2838
09:23
and, like, tips and tricks
for getting rid of them.
164
551400
2485
e também dicas e truques
para se livrar deles.
E acho que se tornou uma ótima forma
para as pessoas falarem sobre algo
09:25
And I think it became this great way
for people to talk about something
165
553909
3418
do qual nunca estariam confortáveis
para falar em público.
09:29
that they'd never felt comfortable
taking about publicly.
166
557351
2774
E é maravilhoso ser sobre algo
tão bobo como cáseos amigdalianos,
09:32
And that is wonderful when it's about
something as goofy as tonsil stones,
167
560149
5937
mas um pouco triste quando um vídeo
tem tamanha repercussão
09:38
but it's a little sad when a video
can have an effect like that
168
566110
3475
09:41
when it's about something
as common as periods.
169
569609
3620
e se trata de algo tão comum
quanto a menstruação.
09:46
Last February, I released
a video on menstruation,
170
574148
3358
Em fevereiro passado lancei
um vídeo sobre a menstruação,
09:49
and to this day,
I am still getting messages
171
577530
3413
e até hoje ainda recebo mensagens
09:52
from people around the globe
who are asking me about their periods.
172
580967
4922
de pessoas do mundo inteiro
me perguntando sobre suas menstruações.
Há muitas jovens, e outras pessoas
não tão jovens no mundo,
09:58
There are a lot of young people --
and some not-so-young people -- out there,
173
586419
5420
preocupadas se o que está
acontecendo com seu corpo
10:03
who are worried that
what's happening to their bodies
174
591863
2635
é anormal de alguma forma.
10:06
is somehow not normal.
175
594522
1706
E sempre digo a elas que não sou médica,
10:08
And, of course, I always tell them
that I am not a medical professional,
176
596252
3437
e que, se possível,
elas deveriam procurar um médico.
10:11
and that, if possible,
they should talk to a doctor.
177
599713
2563
Mas a questão crucial é que todos
deveriam se sentir confortáveis
10:14
But the truth of the matter is
that everyone should feel comfortable
178
602664
3215
em falar com um médico sobre seu corpo.
10:17
talking to a doctor
about their own bodies.
179
605903
2071
E é por isso que acredito na importância
10:19
And that's why I think
it's really important for us
180
607998
2411
de iniciarmos este diálogo
sobre coisas repugnantes desde cedo,
10:22
to start this dialogue about gross stuff
from a pretty early age,
181
610433
3254
para que nossas crianças saibam
10:25
so we can let our kids know
182
613711
1594
10:27
that it's alright to have agency
over your own body
183
615329
3010
que tudo bem terem controle
sobre o corpo e a saúde delas.
10:30
and over your own health.
184
618363
1420
E há outra razão
pela qual falar com seu médico
10:32
There's another reason
that talking to your doctor
185
620196
2368
sobre sua saúde e coisas
repugnantes é muito importante.
10:34
about your health and gross stuff
186
622588
1611
10:36
is really, really important.
187
624223
1457
Os médicos e a comunidade científica
só conseguem abordar certas questões
10:37
Doctors and the scientific community
can only address issues
188
625704
4224
quando sabem que há algo a ser abordado.
10:41
when they know
there's something to address.
189
629952
2384
10:44
So one of the really
interesting things I learned
190
632672
2309
Algo interessante que aprendi enquanto
fazia o vídeo sobre ciclos menstruais
10:47
while making the video on periods,
191
635005
1953
10:48
is that I was talking to this
one scientist who told me
192
636982
2595
é que um cientista me disse
que ainda pouco se sabe
sobre a menstruação.
10:51
there's actually still a lot
we don't know about periods.
193
639601
4682
Muitas pesquisas básicas
ainda não foram feitas.
10:56
There's a lot of basic research
that still hasn't been done.
194
644307
3173
Por um lado, porque não havia
muitas cientistas neste campo
10:59
In part, that's just because there weren't
a lot of scientists in the field
195
647966
4617
11:04
who were women, to ask questions about it.
196
652607
2791
para fazer perguntas sobre isso.
E por outro lado, não é um tema
que as mulheres falam abertamente.
11:07
And it's also not a topic
that women talk about publicly.
197
655422
3452
Existe um vácuo no que sabemos,
11:10
So there's this gap in what we know,
198
658898
2307
simplesmente porque ninguém
fazia essas perguntas.
11:13
just because no one was there
to ask a question.
199
661229
2951
Há uma razão final pela qual acredito ser
tão importante falar de coisas nojentas:
11:16
There's one final reason that I think
talking about gross stuff is so important,
200
664998
4490
nunca se sabe o que iremos encontrar
11:21
and that's because you just never know
what you're going to find
201
669512
3388
quando tirarmos
todas as camadas da nojeira.
11:24
when you peel back all those layers
of disgustingness.
202
672924
3524
11:29
So, take the California brown sea hare.
203
677122
3780
Por exemplo, a lebre-do-mar
marrom californiana,
11:33
This is a sea slug that squirts
this lovely, bright purple ink
204
681297
3698
uma lesma marinha que esguicha
essa fascinante tinta púrpura brilhante
em qualquer criatura que tente ingeri-la.
11:37
at any creature that tries to eat it.
205
685019
2087
Mas é também uma das criaturas
mais maleáveis do reino animal.
11:39
But it also happens to be
one of the kinkiest creatures
206
687543
3632
11:43
in the animal kingdom.
207
691199
1533
11:45
So these guys are hermaphrodites,
208
693260
1733
Elas são hermafroditas, ou seja, possuem
os órgãos sexuais masculino e feminino.
11:47
which means they have both
male and female genitalia.
209
695017
3179
11:50
And when it's time to mate,
210
698220
1738
E na época da reprodução,
até umas 20 lesmas vão se unir
num tipo de trenzinho
11:51
up to 20 individuals will all get together
in this kind of, like, conga line
211
699982
5325
e vão todas acasalar juntas.
11:57
and they'll all mate together.
212
705331
1886
11:59
(Laughter)
213
707241
1412
(Risos)
Uma única lebre-do-mar irá inseminar
a sua parceira da frente
12:02
A single sea hare will inseminate
the partner in front of it
214
710488
4015
e receber o esperma da parceira de trás,
12:06
and receive sperm from the one behind,
215
714527
2262
o que economiza um tempo incrível,
quando você para pra pensar.
12:08
which is sort of like
an awesome time-saver,
216
716813
2387
12:11
when you think about it.
217
719224
1597
(Risos)
12:12
(Laughter)
218
720845
2115
Mas se os cientistas tivessem
apenas observado isso e decidissem:
12:16
But if scientists had only seen this
and they were like,
219
724506
3135
12:19
"OK, we're just not going to
touch that with a stick,"
220
727665
2912
"Não vamos investigá-las",
eles não teriam descoberto a coisa
mais importante sobre as lebres-do-mar
12:22
they would have missed
the bigger thing about sea hares
221
730601
2968
12:25
that makes them really remarkable.
222
733593
1690
e que as fazem realmente incríveis.
12:27
It turns out that these sea hares
have a small number of very large neurons,
223
735307
6597
Acontece que essas lebres-do-mar possuem
um pequeno número de neurônios bem grandes
que as tornam perfeitas para serem
usadas nas pesquisas neurocientíficas.
12:33
which makes them excellent
to use in neuroscience research.
224
741928
4230
E, de fato, o cientista Eric Kandel
usou-as em sua pesquisa
12:38
And, in fact, the scientist Eric Kandel
used them in his research
225
746182
4551
para entender como
memórias são armazenadas.
12:42
to understand how memories are stored.
226
750757
3550
E sabe o que mais?
12:46
And you know what?
227
754331
1341
Ele ganhou um prêmio Nobel
por seu trabalho.
12:47
He won a Nobel Prize for his work.
228
755696
2267
Então vá lá fora e apanhe insetos,
brinque na lama e faça perguntas.
12:50
So go out there and pick up beetles
and play in dirt and ask questions.
229
758538
5729
12:56
And own your fascination with gross stuff
and don't be ashamed of it,
230
764291
3969
E tenha fascínio por coisas repugnantes
e não se envergonhe disso,
pois você nunca sabe o que irá encontrar.
13:00
because you never know
what you're going to find.
231
768284
2319
13:02
And as I say at the end of all my videos,
232
770627
3206
E como eu digo no final
de todos os meus vídeos:
"Eca!"
13:05
"Ew."
233
773857
1206
Obrigada.
13:07
Thank you.
234
775087
