Why you should listen

For writer, ordained minister and hospital chaplain Debra Jarvis, humor is a powerful balm. She is not afraid to be funny even when doing very serious work with the sick and dying as a hospice chaplain, a pastoral consultant for volunteer groups caring for people with AIDS and MS, and a staff chaplain at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. Debra is the author of It’s Not About the Hair: And Other Certainties of Life & Cancer and numerous other books. Currently on sabbatical in Geneva, Debra’s last job was as writer-in-residence for the University Congregational United Church of Christ in Seattle. In her free time, Debra accompanies her Cairn terrier Max in his therapy dog work.

I just met you on a bus,
0
1364
3273
Eu acabei de conhecê-lo no ônibus,
00:16
and we would really like
to get to know each other,
1
4637
2441
e a gente quer muito se entrosar,
00:19
but I've got to get off at the next stop,
2
7078
2486
mas eu tenho que descer no próximo ponto,
00:21
so you're going to tell me
three things about yourself
3
9564
4767
então você vai me contar três coisas
sobre você mesmo
00:26
that just define you as a person,
4
14331
3580
que realmente o definem como pessoa.
00:30
three things about yourself
5
17911
1778
Três coisas sobre você
00:31
that will help me understand who you are,
6
19689
3609
que vão me fazer entender quem você é,
00:35
three things that just
get to your very essence.
7
23298
3994
que são a sua essência.
00:39
And what I'm wondering
8
27292
3078
E o que eu me pergunto é,
00:42
is, of those three things,
9
30370
3289
dessas três coisas,
00:45
is any one of them
10
33659
1990
alguma delas é
ter sobrevivido a um trauma?
00:47
surviving some kind of trauma?
11
35649
5024
00:52
Cancer survivor, rape survivor,
12
40673
5697
Vítima de câncer, vítima de estupro,
00:58
Holocaust survivor, incest survivor.
13
46370
5117
vítima do holocausto, vítima de incesto.
01:03
Ever notice how we tend to identify ourselves
14
51487
3444
Já notaram como tendemos a nos identificar
01:07
by our wounds?
15
54931
2531
pelas nossas feridas?
01:09
And where I have seen this survivor identity
16
57462
4476
E o lugar onde eu vejo essa
identidade de sobrevivente
01:14
have the most consequences
17
61938
2488
ter as maiores consequências
01:16
is in the cancer community.
18
64426
2553
é com as vítimas de câncer.
E eu mantenho contato com
essa comunidade já faz muito tempo,
01:19
And I've been around this
community for a long time,
19
66979
2734
01:21
because I've been a hospice
and a hospital chaplain
20
69713
3194
pois sou capelã de um sanatório
e de um hospital
01:25
for almost 30 years.
21
72907
3297
por quase 30 anos.
01:28
And in 2005, I was working at a big cancer center
22
76204
5733
E em 2005, eu estava trabalhando
em um grande centro de oncologia
01:34
when I received the news that
23
81937
2305
quando recebi a notícia
01:36
my mother had breast cancer.
24
84242
3435
de que minha mãe estava
com câncer de mama.
01:39
And then five days later,
25
87677
2182
E cinco dias depois disso,
01:42
I received the news that I had breast cancer.
26
89859
5467
eu recebi a notícia que eu estava
com câncer de mama.
01:47
My mother and I can be competitive —
27
95326
2633
Eu e minha mãe sempre competimos muito.
01:50
(Laughter) —
28
97959
1788
(Risos)
01:51
but I was really not trying to
compete with her on this one.
29
99747
4432
Mas eu não queria competir com ela nisso.
01:56
And in fact, I thought, well,
30
104179
2025
E na verdade, eu pensei, bom...
01:58
if you have to have cancer,
31
106204
1935
se você tiver que ter câncer,
02:00
it's pretty convenient to be working
32
108139
1721
a melhor coisa é estar trabalhando
02:02
at a place that treats it.
33
109860
1511
onde tratam ele.
02:03
But this is what I heard from
a lot of outraged people.
34
111371
2697
Mas eis o que eu ouvi
de muitas pessoas ultrajadas:
02:06
What?
35
114068
1462
"O quê?"
02:07
You're the chaplain.
36
115530
1920
"Você é a capelã".
02:09
You should be immune.
37
117450
2290
"Você devia ser imune".
02:11
Like, maybe I should have just gotten off
38
119740
2077
Algo como, deviam ter me liberado
02:14
with a warning instead of an actual ticket,
39
121817
2295
só com uma advertência ao invés da multa
02:16
because I'm on the force.
40
124112
3768
porque eu sou policial.
02:20
So I did get my treatment at the
cancer center where I worked,
41
127880
2975
Então eu me tratei
na clínica em que trabalhava,
02:23
which was amazingly convenient,
42
130855
2521
o que era muitíssimo conveniente,
02:25
and I had chemotherapy
43
133376
2239
fiz quimioterapia,
02:27
and a mastectomy, and a saline implant put in,
44
135615
2710
uma mastectomia,
recebi um implante salino,
02:30
and so before I say another word,
let me just say right now,
45
138325
2125
e antes de mais nada, deixem-me já dizer:
02:32
this is the fake one. (Laughter)
46
140450
4774
Esta aqui é a falsa. (Risos)
02:37
I have found that I need to get that out of the way,
47
145224
3213
Eu percebi que é melhor
resolver isso logo,
02:40
because I'll see somebody go
48
148437
1774
porque logo vai ter alguém falando
02:42
"Oh, I know it's this one."
49
150211
2217
"Ah, já sei, é essa aqui.",
02:44
And then I'll move or I'll
gesture and they'll go,
50
152428
2464
E eu vou andar ou gesticular
e eles vão falar
02:47
"No, it's that one."
51
154892
2553
"Não, é aquela."
02:49
So now you know.
52
157445
2171
Agora já sabem.
02:51
I learned a lot being a patient,
53
159616
2137
Eu aprendi muito sendo uma paciente,
02:53
and one of the surprising things was
54
161753
1522
e o que me surpreendeu
02:55
that only a small part of the cancer experience
55
163275
4107
foi o quão pequena é a parte médica
02:59
is about medicine.
56
167382
2092
de se estar com câncer.
03:01
Most of it is about feelings and faith
57
169474
4353
A maior parte são sentimentos, fé,
03:06
and losing and finding your identity
58
173827
2633
perder e encontrar sua identidade,
03:08
and discovering strength
59
176460
1578
e descobrir níveis de força
03:10
and flexibility you never even knew you had.
60
178038
3922
e flexibilidade que você
nem sabia que tinha.
03:14
It's about realizing that
61
181960
2329
É perceber que
03:16
the most important things in life are
62
184289
3070
as coisas mais importantes da vida
03:19
not things at all, but relationships,
63
187359
3081
não são nem coisas, são relações,
03:22
and it's about laughing in the face of uncertainty
64
190440
4066
e é rir na cara da incerteza
03:26
and learning that the way to
get out of almost anything
65
194506
3439
e aprender que o melhor jeito
de se livrar de quase tudo
03:30
is to say, "I have cancer."
66
197945
4315
é dizer "eu tenho câncer".
03:34
So the other thing I learned was that
67
202260
2513
A outra coisa que eu aprendi
é que eu não preciso assumir a identidade
03:36
I don't have to take on "cancer survivor"
68
204773
3454
03:40
as my identity,
69
208227
1968
de "sobrevivente do câncer",
03:42
but, boy, are there powerful forces
70
210195
3619
mas, rapaz, há forças muito poderosas
03:46
pushing me to do just that.
71
213814
3546
me tentando a fazer isso.
03:49
Now, don't, please, misunderstand me.
72
217360
4318
Por favor, não me entendam mal.
03:53
Cancer organizations
73
221678
1959
Organizações de combate ao câncer,
03:55
and the drive for early screening
74
223637
1980
campanhas de prevenção,
03:57
and cancer awareness and cancer research
75
225617
2654
a divulgação e a pesquisa,
04:00
have normalized cancer,
76
228271
2115
todos fizeram o câncer ser normal,
04:02
and this is a wonderful thing.
77
230386
1324
e isso é maravilhoso.
04:03
We can now talk about cancer
78
231710
2084
Hoje podemos falar de câncer
04:05
without whispering.
79
233794
1778
sem sussurrar.
04:07
We can talk about cancer and
we can support one another.
80
235572
4518
Podemos falar sobre ele e
apoiar uns aos outros.
04:12
But sometimes, it feels
81
240090
3086
Mas às vezes, parece
04:15
like people go a little overboard
82
243176
1398
que as pessoas exageram um pouco,
04:16
and they start telling us how we're going to feel.
83
244574
5205
e eles começam a falar
como vamos nos sentir.
04:21
So about a week after my surgery,
84
249779
3543
Uma semana depois da minha cirurgia,
04:25
we had a houseguest.
85
253322
2880
recebemos uma visita em casa.
04:28
That was probably our first mistake.
86
256202
2748
Provavelmente, foi nosso primeiro erro.
04:31
And keep in mind that
87
258950
1521
E não se esqueçam,
04:32
at this point in my life
88
260471
1670
naquele ponto da minha vida,
04:34
I had been a chaplain for over 20 years,
89
262141
3622
eu tinha sido capelã por mais de 20 anos,
04:37
and issues like dying and death
90
265763
2323
então eu já tinha falado
04:40
and the meaning of life,
91
268086
1556
de coisas como a morte
e o sentido da vida
04:41
these are all things I'd been
yakking about forever.
92
269642
3178
um milhão de vezes.
04:45
So at dinner that night,
93
272820
2500
Naquela noite, durante o jantar,
04:47
our houseguest proceeds to
stretch his arms up over his head,
94
275320
2736
nossa visita se espreguiçou e disse
04:50
and say, "You know, Deb,
95
278056
2805
"Sabe, Deb,
04:53
now you're really going to learn what's important.
96
280861
4149
agora é que você vai descobrir
o que tem valor de verdade.
04:57
Yes, you are going to make some big changes
97
285010
2697
É, você vai mudar muita coisa
04:59
in your life,
98
287707
1370
na sua vida,
05:01
and now you're going to start
thinking about your death.
99
289077
3648
e agora você vai começar
a pensar na sua morte.
05:04
Yep, this cancer is your wakeup call."
100
292725
4025
É, esse câncer vai fazer sua ficha cair".
05:10
Now, these are golden words
101
298520
2655
Agora, palavras assim são lindas
05:13
coming from someone who is speaking about
102
301175
1979
quando a pessoa está falando
05:15
their own experience,
103
303154
2419
por experiência própria,
05:17
but when someone is telling you
104
305573
2376
mas alguém dizer a você
05:20
how you are going to feel,
105
307949
2393
como você vai se sentir,
05:22
it's instant crap.
106
310342
2046
é falar merda.
05:24
The only reason I did not kill him
107
312388
2904
Eu só não o matei
05:27
with my bare hands
108
315292
1991
de tanta porrada
05:29
was because I could not lift my right arm.
109
317283
4095
porque não conseguia
erguer o braço direito.
05:33
But I did say a really bad word to him,
110
321378
4218
Mas eu falei uma palavra
muito feia para ele,
05:37
followed by a regular word, that —
111
325596
2901
depois uma outra mais normal, que —
05:40
(Laughter) —
112
328497
1223
(Risos) —
05:41
made my husband say, "She's on narcotics."
113
329720
3518
fez meu marido dizer, "É o analgésico".
05:45
(Laughter)
114
333238
1958
(Risos)
05:47
And then after my treatment, it just felt like
115
335196
2494
E depois do meu tratamento,
parecia que todo mundo estava dizendo
o que a minha experiência significaria.
05:49
everyone was telling me what my
experience was going to mean.
116
337690
3283
05:53
"Oh, this means you're going to be doing the walk."
117
340973
2792
"Ah, isso quer dizer
que você vai na marcha".
"Ah, isso quer dizer que
você vai no jantar".
05:55
"Oh, this means you're coming to the luncheon."
118
343765
1624
05:57
"This means you're going to be wearing
119
345389
1262
"Isso quer dizer que você vai usar
05:58
the pink ribbon and the pink t-shirt
120
346651
2391
a fita rosa, a camiseta rosa,
06:01
and the headband and the earrings
121
349042
1862
a bandana e os brincos
06:03
and the bracelet and the panties."
122
350904
3736
e o bracelete e as calcinhas".
06:06
Panties. No, seriously, google it.
123
354640
3229
Calcinhas. Sério, joguem no Google.
06:10
(Laughter)
124
357869
2051
(Risos)
06:12
How is that raising awareness?
125
359920
2091
Isso é conscientização?
06:14
Only my husband should be seeing my panties.
126
362011
2067
O único que vai ver
minha calcinha é meu marido.
06:16
(Laughter)
127
364078
1669
(Risos)
06:17
He's pretty aware of cancer already.
128
365747
4411
E ele já sabe bastante sobre câncer.
(Risos)
06:22
It was at that point where I felt like, oh my God,
129
370158
3144
Foi naquele momento que eu pensei
"Ai meu Deus, isso está
tomando conta da minha vida"
06:25
this is just taking over my life.
130
373302
3150
06:28
And that's when I told myself,
claim your experience.
131
376452
4972
E foi aí que eu disse a mim mesma:
"Controle a sua experiência.
06:33
Don't let it claim you.
132
381424
3662
Não deixe ela controlá-lo".
06:37
We all know that
133
385086
2108
Todos sabemos que
06:39
the way to cope with trauma, with loss,
134
387194
4122
o melhor jeito de lidar com traumas,
perdas ou qualquer
experiência transformadora
06:43
with any life-changing experience,
135
391316
2425
06:45
is to find meaning.
136
393741
2150
é encontrar sentido nela.
06:48
But here's the thing:
137
395891
2237
Mas aí que está.
06:50
No one can tell us
138
398128
1667
Ninguém pode nos dizer
06:51
what our experience means.
139
399795
2736
qual é o sentido da nossa experiência.
06:54
We have to decide what it means.
140
402531
3289
Nós temos que decidir o sentido dela.
06:58
And it doesn't have to be some gigantic,
141
405820
2132
E não precisa ser algo
gigante e extrovertido.
07:00
extroverted meaning.
142
407952
2007
07:02
We don't all have to start a foundation
143
409959
2511
Não precisamos começar uma fundação
07:04
or an organization or write a book
144
412470
2152
ou uma organização, escrever um livro
07:06
or make a documentary.
145
414622
2880
ou um documentário.
07:09
Meaning can be quiet
146
417502
2947
O sentido pode ser quieto
07:12
and introverted.
147
420449
2171
e introvertido.
07:14
Maybe we make one small decision about our lives
148
422620
5928
Talvez tomemos uma pequena decisão
sobre nossas vidas
07:20
that can bring about big change.
149
428548
5078
que traga grandes mudanças.
07:25
Many years ago, I had a patient,
150
433626
1940
Muitos anos atrás, eu tive um paciente,
07:27
just a wonderful young man
151
435566
2005
um jovem maravilhoso
07:29
who was loved by the staff,
152
437571
2735
que todos os funcionários adoravam,
07:32
and so it was something of a shock to us to realize
153
440306
2884
então ficamos meio chocados de perceber
07:35
that he had no friends.
154
443190
3784
que ele não tinha amigos.
07:39
He lived by himself,
155
446974
2306
Ele morava sozinho,
07:41
he would come in for chemotherapy by himself,
156
449280
4028
vinha fazer quimio sozinho,
07:45
he would receive his treatment,
157
453308
1945
fazia o tratamento
07:47
and then he'd walk home alone.
158
455253
3731
e voltava para casa sozinho.
07:51
And I even asked him. I said, "Hey,
159
458984
1764
Eu até perguntei para ele. Eu disse
07:52
how come you never bring a friend with you?"
160
460748
2741
"Ei, por que você nunca trouxe
um amigo com você?"
07:55
And he said, "I don't really have any friends."
161
463489
4719
Ele respondeu "Eu não tenho nenhum amigo".
08:00
But he had tons of friends on the infusion floor.
162
468208
2261
Mas ele tinha um monte
no andar de injeção.
08:02
We all loved him, and people were going
in and out of his room all the time.
163
470469
4376
Todos o adoravam e sempre tinha alguém
entrando e saindo do quarto dele.
08:07
So at his last chemo,
164
474845
2959
Então, no último dia de quimio dele,
08:10
we sang him the song
165
477804
1327
cantamos a música,
08:11
and we put the crown on his
head and we blew the bubbles,
166
479131
2767
colocamos a coroa nele,
sopramos as bolhas,
08:14
and then I asked him, I said,
167
481898
2441
e eu perguntei:
08:16
"So what are you going to do now?"
168
484339
4456
"O que você vai fazer agora?"
08:20
And he answered,
169
488795
1810
E ele respondeu,
08:22
"Make friends."
170
490605
1633
"Amigos".
08:24
And he did.
171
492238
2112
E ele fez.
08:26
He started volunteering
and he made friends there,
172
494350
3554
Ele começou a se voluntariar
e fez amigos lá,
08:30
and he began going to a church
and he made friends there,
173
497904
2686
começou a ir na igreja
e fez amigos lá,
08:32
and at Christmas he invited my husband
and me to a party in his apartment,
174
500590
2960
e no Natal ele convidou meu marido e eu
para uma festa no apartamento dele,
08:35
and the place was filled with his friends.
175
503550
5117
e o lugar estava cheio de amigos dele.
08:40
Claim your experience.
176
508667
2243
Controle a sua experiência.
08:43
Don't let it claim you.
177
510910
1649
Não deixe ela controlá-lo.
08:44
He decided that the meaning of his experience
178
512559
4872
Ele decidiu que o sentido
da experiência dele
08:49
was to know the joy of friendship,
179
517431
3767
era conhecer a alegria da amizade,
08:53
and then learn to make friends.
180
521198
4608
e aprender a fazer amigos.
08:58
So what about you?
181
525806
3986
E quanto a vocês?
Como vão encontrar sentido
09:01
How are you going to find meaning
182
529792
2353
09:04
in your crappy experience?
183
532145
2447
nas suas experiências de merda?
09:06
It could be a recent one,
184
534592
1891
Pode ser algo recente,
09:08
or it could be one that you've been carrying around
185
536483
1971
e pode ser algo que vocês
já levam nas costas
09:10
for a really long time.
186
538454
3891
há muito tempo.
09:14
It's never too late to change what it means,
187
542345
4510
Nunca é tarde demais para
mudar o sentido dela,
09:19
because meaning is dynamic.
188
546855
2255
porque o sentido é dinâmico.
09:21
What it means today
189
549110
1661
O que ela significa hoje
09:22
may not be what it means a year from now,
190
550771
1927
pode ser diferente daqui a um ano,
09:24
or 10 years from now.
191
552698
2843
ou dez anos.
09:27
It's never too late to become someone other
192
555541
2610
Nunca é tarde demais para deixar de ser
09:30
than simply a survivor.
193
558151
3521
só um sobrevivente.
09:33
Hear how static that word sounds?
194
561672
3324
Percebam quão estático isso soa.
09:37
Survivor.
195
564996
1917
Sobrevivente.
09:39
No movement, no growth.
196
566913
4391
Sem movimento, sem crescimento.
09:43
Claim your experience.
197
571304
1887
Controle a experiência
09:45
Don't let it claim you, because if you do,
198
573191
2621
e não deixe ela controlá-lo,
porque se deixar,
09:48
I believe you will become trapped,
199
575812
3161
eu acho que você vai ficar preso,
09:51
you will not grow, you will not evolve.
200
578973
5942
sem crescer, sem evoluir.
09:57
But of course, sometimes it's not outside pressures
201
584915
3478
Mas, claro, às vezes não são
pressões externas
10:00
that cause us to take on that identity of survivor.
202
588393
4371
que nos faz assumir
a identidade de sobrevivente.
10:04
Sometimes we just like the perks.
203
592764
3893
Às vezes, a gente gosta dos benefícios.
10:08
Sometimes there's a payoff.
204
596657
3508
Às vezes há uma recompensa.
10:12
But then we get stuck.
205
600165
3735
Mas aí empacamos.
Uma das primeiras coisas que eu aprendi
10:16
Now, one of the first things I learned
206
603900
1811
10:17
as a chaplain intern was the three C's
207
605711
4106
como capelã foram os três C's
10:22
of the chaplain's job:
208
609817
2391
da profissão:
10:24
Comfort, clarify and, when necessary, confront
209
612208
6962
Conforte, clarifique
e, se necessário, confronte
ou conteste.
10:31
or challenge.
210
619170
2155
10:33
Now, we all pretty much love the comforting
211
621325
1946
Claro, todo mundo adora o conforto
10:35
and the clarifying.
212
623271
1857
e o esclarecimento.
10:37
The confronting, not so much.
213
625128
4942
O confrontar, nem tanto.
10:42
One of the other things that I loved
214
630070
1994
Uma das coisas que eu adorava
10:44
about being a chaplain was
215
632064
2458
de ser capelã era
10:46
seeing patients a year, or even several years
216
634522
4473
ver um paciente um ano,
ou mesmo vários anos
10:51
after their treatment, because
217
638995
1841
depois do tratamento,
10:53
it was just really cool to see
how they had changed
218
640836
2700
porque era demais ver
como eles tinham mudado,
10:55
and how their lives had evolved
219
643536
2216
como suas vidas tinham evoluído
10:57
and what had happened to them.
220
645752
1890
e o que tinha acontecido com eles.
10:59
So I was thrilled one day
221
647642
2520
Então eu fiquei emocionada
11:02
to get a page down into the lobby of the clinic
222
650162
2448
quando um dia me chamaram
até o saguão da clínica
11:04
from a patient who I had seen the year before,
223
652610
3581
para encontrar uma paciente
que eu tinha visto no ano anterior,
11:08
and she was there with her two adult daughters,
224
656191
2474
e ela estava lá com as duas filhas moças,
11:10
who I also knew, for her one year follow-up exam.
225
658665
4259
que eu também conhecia,
para o checkup anual dela.
11:15
So I got down to the lobby, and they were ecstatic
226
662924
3537
Então eu desci até o saguão,
e elas estavam malucas
11:18
because she had just gotten
all of her test results back
227
666461
2251
porque ela tinha recebido
os resultados dos exames
11:20
and she was NED: No Evidence of Disease.
228
668712
6188
e ela estava com NID,
Nenhum Indício de Doença.
11:27
Which I used to think meant Not Entirely Dead.
229
674900
4757
Eu costumava achar que significava
Não Totalmente Morto.
11:31
So they were ecstatic, we sat down to visit,
230
679657
5493
Então elas estavam muito felizes,
nós sentamos na sala de visitas,
11:37
and it was so weird, because
231
685150
2807
e foi muito estranho,
porque dois minutos depois
ela começou a contar, de novo,
11:40
within two minutes, she
started retelling me the story
232
687957
3882
11:44
of her diagnosis and her
surgery and her chemo,
233
691839
4530
a história do diagnóstico dela,
da cirurgia, da quimio,
11:48
even though, as her chaplain,
I saw her every week,
234
696369
3468
apesar de eu, como capelã,
tê-la visitado toda semana
11:52
and so I knew this story.
235
699837
2891
e já saber toda a história.
11:54
And she was using words like suffering,
236
702728
3042
E ela usava palavras como "sofrimento",
11:57
agony, struggle.
237
705770
3995
"agonia", "luta".
12:01
And she ended her story with,
238
709765
2614
E ela terminou dizendo,
12:04
"I felt crucified."
239
712379
4794
"Me sentia crucificada".
12:09
And at that point, her two
daughters got up and said,
240
717173
2664
Naquela hora, as filhas
levantaram e disseram,
12:12
"We're going to go get coffee."
241
719837
3912
"Vamos pegar um café".
12:15
And they left.
242
723749
3141
E saíram.
12:19
Tell me three things about
yourself before the next stop.
243
726890
2835
Diga-me três coisas sobre você
antes do próximo ponto.
12:21
People were leaving the bus before she even got
244
729725
2756
As pessoas estavam descendo antes mesmo
12:24
to number two or number three.
245
732481
5377
de ela chegar na segunda ou na terceira.
12:30
So I handed her a tissue,
246
737858
3487
Então eu dei um lenço a ela,
12:33
and I gave her a hug,
247
741345
3297
dei um abraço,
12:36
and then, because I really cared for this woman,
248
744642
3510
e então, já que eu realmente gostava dela,
12:40
I said,
249
748152
2086
eu disse,
12:42
"Get down off your cross."
250
750238
2306
"Desça da sua cruz".
12:44
And she said, "What?"
251
752544
4266
E ela disse "O quê?"
12:49
And I repeated, "Get down off your cross."
252
756810
5414
E eu repeti: "Desça da sua cruz".
12:54
And to her credit, she could
talk about her reasons
253
762224
4645
Eu admito, ela podia ter
falado todas as razões
12:59
for embracing and then clinging to this identity.
254
766869
5119
que fizeram ela abraçar
e depois se agarrar a essa identidade.
13:04
It got her a lot of attention.
255
771988
2022
Ela recebia muita atenção,
13:06
People were taking care of her for a change.
256
774010
3105
as pessoas estavam
cuidando dela, para variar.
13:09
But now, it was having the opposite effect.
257
777115
3695
Mas agora, estava tendo o efeito oposto.
13:13
It was pushing people away.
258
780810
2483
Estava afastando os outros.
13:15
People kept leaving to get coffee.
259
783293
3747
Eles sempre saíam para pegar café.
13:19
She felt crucified by her experience,
260
787040
3901
Ela se sentia crucificada pela experiência
13:23
but she didn't want to let that crucified self die.
261
790941
6222
mas não queria deixar aquela
pessoa crucificada morrer.
13:29
Now, perhaps you are thinking
262
797163
2917
Agora, talvez vocês achem que
13:32
I was a little harsh with her,
263
800080
2950
eu fui muito dura com ela,
13:35
so I must tell you that
264
803030
2108
então eu tenho que dizer
13:37
I was speaking out of my own experience.
265
805138
3692
que falava por experiência própria.
13:41
Many, many years before,
266
808830
2844
Muitos, muitos anos antes,
13:43
I had been fired from a job that I loved,
267
811674
3326
eu tinha sido demitida de
um emprego que adorava,
13:47
and I would not stop talking about my innocence
268
815000
3716
e eu não parava de falar
da minha inocência
13:50
and the injustice and the betrayal and the deceipt,
269
818716
3404
e da injustiça e da traição
e da enganação,
até que, finalmente, igual essa mulher,
as pessoas se afastassem de mim,
13:54
until finally, just like this woman,
270
822120
1130
13:55
people were walking away from me,
271
823250
2041
13:57
until I finally realized
272
825291
3236
e eu finalmente percebi
14:00
I wasn't just processing my feelings,
273
828527
3872
que eu não estava só
processando meus sentimentos,
14:04
I was feeding them.
274
832399
2708
estava alimentando eles.
14:07
I didn't want to let that crucified self die.
275
835107
4063
Eu não queria deixar
a eu crucificada morrer.
14:11
But we all know that with any resurrection story,
276
839170
5422
Mas todos sabemos que
em qualquer história de ressurreição,
14:16
you have to die first.
277
844592
2628
primeiro é preciso morrer.
14:19
The Christian story,
278
847220
1823
Na história cristã,
14:21
Jesus was dead a whole day in the tomb
279
849043
3272
Jesus ficou morto e enterrado
um dia inteiro
14:24
before he was resurrected.
280
852315
2495
antes de ressuscitar.
14:27
And I believe that for us,
281
854810
1838
E eu acredito que, para nós,
14:28
being in the tomb
282
856648
2132
estar enterrado
14:30
means doing our own deep inner work
283
858780
3986
significa trabalhar internamente
14:34
around our wounds
284
862766
2704
em volta das feridas
14:37
and allowing ourselves to be healed.
285
865470
4473
e nos permitir ser curados.
14:42
We have to let that crucified self die
286
869943
3057
Temos que deixar
a pessoa crucificada morrer
14:45
so that a new self, a truer self,
287
873000
3604
para que uma pessoa nova
e mais verdadeira
14:48
is born.
288
876604
2382
possa nascer.
14:51
We have to let that old story go
289
878986
2858
Temos que deixar a história velha de lado
14:54
so that a new story, a truer story,
290
881844
4147
para que uma nova e mais verdadeira
14:58
can be told.
291
885991
3039
possa ser contada.
15:01
Claim your experience. Don't let it claim you.
292
889030
5543
Controlem sua experiência.
Não deixem ela controlá-los.
15:06
What if there were no survivors,
293
894573
2581
E se não houvessem sobreviventes,
15:09
meaning, what if people decided
294
897154
2796
ou seja, e se as pessoas decidissem
15:12
to just claim their trauma as an experience
295
899950
2870
simplesmente aceitar o trauma
como uma experiência
15:15
instead of taking it on as an identity?
296
902820
4170
ao invés de como uma identidade?
15:19
Maybe it would be the end of being
297
906990
2002
Talvez parássemos de ficar presos
nas nossas feridas.
15:21
trapped in our wounds
298
908992
2358
15:23
and the beginning of amazing
299
911350
3554
e começássemos a nos explorar,
15:27
self-exploration and discovery and growth.
300
914904
3926
nos descobrir e crescer.
15:31
Maybe it would be the start of defining ourselves
301
918830
4795
Talvez começássemos a nos definir
15:35
by who we have become
302
923625
2580
por quem nos tornamos
15:38
and who we are becoming.
303
926205
4170
e quem estamos nos tornando.
15:42
So perhaps survivor was not
304
930375
5771
Então...
...talvez ser um sobrevivente não seja
15:48
one of the three things that you would tell me.
305
936146
5207
uma das três coisas que você me diria.
15:53
No matter.
306
941353
1317
Não tem problema.
15:54
I just want you all to know that
307
942670
2240
Eu só quero que todos saibam
15:57
I am really glad that we are on this bus together,
308
944910
4313
que eu estou muito feliz de
estar nesse ônibus com vocês,
16:01
and this is my stop.
309
949223
3896
e é aqui que eu desço.
16:05
(Applause)

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Debra Jarvis - Chaplain + author
Debra Jarvis isn't your typical hospital chaplain. With wry wit, she aims to comfort patients -- and also challenge them.

Why you should listen

For writer, ordained minister and hospital chaplain Debra Jarvis, humor is a powerful balm.
