Todos passamos por fases ruins na vida,
00:12
So, we all have bad seasons in life.

00:15
And I had one in 2013.
1
3754
1920
e eu passei por uma em 2013.
00:18
My marriage had just ended,
2
6373
1346
Meu casamento tinha acabado e eu
me sentia humilhado por seu fracasso.
00:19
and I was humiliated
by that failed commitment.
3
7743
2652
00:22
My kids had left home for college
or were leaving.
4
10419
2802
Meus filhos tinham saído de casa
pra fazer faculdade.
00:26
I grew up mostly
in the conservative movement,
5
14045
2323
Cresci basicamente
no movimento conservador,
00:28
but conservatism had changed,
6
16392
1600
mas o conservadorismo havia mudado,
então perdi muitos daqueles amigos também.
00:30
so I lost a lot of those friends, too.
7
18016
1992
00:32
And so what I did is,
I lived alone in an apartment,
8
20441
2989
Assim, eu morava sozinho num apartamento
00:35
and I just worked.
9
23454
1200
e vivia para o trabalho.
00:37
If you opened the kitchen drawers
where there should have been utensils,
10
25417
3413
Nas gavetas da cozinha,
onde devia haver utensílios,
00:40
there were Post-it notes.
11
28854
1523
havia adesivos com recados.
00:42
If you opened the other drawers
where there should have been plates,
12
30916
3215
Em gavetas onde devia haver
pratos, eu guardava envelopes.
00:46
I had envelopes.
13
34155
1150
00:47
I had work friends, weekday friends,
but I didn't have weekend friends.
14
35885
3397
Eu tinha amigos de trabalho,
mas não amigos de fim de semana.
00:51
And so my weekends
were these long, howling silences.
15
39942
3600
Então, meus fins de semana
eram um longo silêncio gritante.
00:56
And I was lonely.
16
44268
1372
E eu me sentia só.
00:58
And loneliness, unexpectedly,
came to me in the form of --
17
46395
3573
A solidão me atingiu
inesperadamente na forma de...
01:02
it felt like fear,
a burning in my stomach.
18
50399
2849
parecia medo, uma queimação no estômago.
01:05
And it felt a little like drunkenness,
19
53272
2681
Lembrava um pouco uma embriaguez,
01:07
just making bad decisions,
just fluidity, lack of solidity.
20
55977
4930
tomar decisões erradas,
fluidez, falta de solidez.
01:13
And the painful part of that moment
was the awareness
21
61911
3266
A parte dolorosa daquele momento
era a consciência
01:17
that the emptiness in my apartment
was just reflective of the emptiness
22
65201
3403
de que o vazio em meu apartamento
nada mais era que o reflexo
do vazio dentro de mim,
01:20
in myself,
23
68628
1599
01:22
and that I had fallen for some of the lies
that our culture tells us.
24
70251
3727
e que eu havia me deixado levar
por algumas das mentiras da nossa cultura.
01:27
The first lie is that
career success is fulfilling.
25
75196
3409
A primeira mentira era que ter
uma carreira de sucesso nos satisfaz.
01:30
I've had a fair bit of career success,
26
78629
1837
Tive bastante sucesso nesse aspecto,
e descobri que isso me ajudava
a evitar a vergonha que eu teria
01:32
and I've found that it helps me avoid
the shame I would feel
27
80490
2838
01:35
if I felt myself a failure,
28
83352
1674
se me sentisse um fracassado,
01:37
but it hasn't given me any positive good.
29
85050
2531
mas não me trazia nenhum benefício.
01:40
The second lie is I can make myself happy,
30
88201
3596
A segunda mentira é pensar
que eu posso me fazer feliz,
01:44
that if I just win one more victory,
31
92484
2080
que, se eu tiver mais uma vitória,
01:46
lose 15 pounds, do a little more yoga,
32
94588
3491
perder peso, praticar mais ioga,
01:50
I'll get happy.
33
98103
1150
vou ser feliz.
01:51
And that's the lie of self-sufficiency.
34
99743
2318
É a mentira da autossuficiência.
01:54
But as anybody
on their deathbed will tell you,
35
102419
2682
Como diria qualquer pessoa
em seu leito de morte,
01:57
the things that make people happy
is the deep relationships of life,
36
105125
3264
a felicidade está nos relacionamentos
profundos que temos na vida,
02:00
the losing of self-sufficiency.
37
108413
2067
a perda da autossuficiência.
02:03
The third lie is the lie
of the meritocracy.
38
111804
2667
A terceira mentira é a da meritocracia.
02:07
The message of the meritocracy
is you are what you accomplish.
39
115591
3199
A meritocracia diz que somos
o que conquistamos.
02:11
The myth of the meritocracy
is you can earn dignity
40
119133
2467
Para o mito da meritocracia,
a dignidade está em nos ligar
a marcas de prestígio.
02:13
by attaching yourself
to prestigious brands.
41
121624
2610
02:16
The emotion of the meritocracy
is conditional love,
42
124258
2805
A emoção da meritocracia
é o amor condicional,
ou seja, "conquistar" o direito ao amor.
02:19
you can "earn" your way to love.
43
127087
1855
02:20
The anthropology of the meritocracy
is you're not a soul to be purified,
44
128966
3421
A antropologia da meritocracia diz que
não somos uma alma a ser purificada,
02:24
you're a set of skills to be maximized.
45
132411
2468
mas um conjunto de habilidades
a serem maximizadas.
02:26
And the evil of the meritocracy
46
134903
1849
E o mal da meritocracia
é que quem conquistou
um pouco mais do que os outros
02:28
is that people who've achieved
a little more than others
47
136776
2658
02:31
are actually worth
a little more than others.
48
139458
2286
vale um pouco mais do que os outros.
02:34
And so the wages of sin are sin.
49
142141
1863
Então, o preço do pecado é o pecado.
02:36
And my sins were the sins of omission--
50
144815
1884
O meu pecado foi o da omissão:
02:38
not reaching out,
failing to show up for my friends,
51
146723
2468
não procurar as pessoas,
não visitar meus amigos,
fugir, evitar conflitos.
02:41
evasion, avoiding conflict.
52
149215
1515
02:43
And the weird thing was
that as I was falling into the valley --
53
151560
3128
O mais estranho era que,
enquanto eu caía no abismo,
havia um abismo de desconexão
e muitas outras pessoas faziam o mesmo.
02:46
it was a valley of disconnection --
54
154712
1704
02:48
a lot of other people
were doing that, too.
55
156440
2034
E esse é o segredo da minha carreira:
02:51
And that's sort of
the secret to my career;
56
159014
2009
muitas coisas que aconteceram comigo
também acontecem a outras pessoas.
02:53
a lot of the things that happen to me
57
161047
1773
02:54
are always happening
to a lot of other people.
58
162844
2158
Sou uma pessoa bem comum
um pouco mais comunicativa que a média.
02:57
I'm a very average person
with above average communication skills.
59
165026
3194
(Risos)
03:00
(Laughter)
60
168244
1103
03:01
And so I was detached.
61
169371
1466
Então, eu estava distante.
03:03
And at the same time,
a lot of other people were detached
62
171252
3262
Ao mesmo tempo, muitas outras
pessoas estavam distantes
03:06
and isolated and fragmented
from each other.
63
174538
2515
e isoladas umas das outras.
03:09
Thirty-five percent of Americans
over 45 are chronically lonely.
64
177077
3080
Dos americanos acima dos 45 anos,
35% sofrem de solidão crônica.
03:12
Only eight percent of Americans
report having meaningful conversation
65
180181
3341
Apenas 8% dos norte-americanos
alegam ter diálogos significativos
03:15
with their neighbors.
66
183546
1150
com seus vizinhos.
03:16
Only 32 percent of Americans
say they trust their neighbors,
67
184720
2825
Apenas 32% dos americanos
dizem confiar em seus vizinhos,
03:19
and only 18 percent of millennials.
68
187569
2254
e apenas 18% da geração Y.
O partido político que mais cresce
é o de não afiliados,
03:21
The fastest-growing
political party is unaffiliated.
69
189847
2441
03:24
The fastest-growing religious
movement is unaffiliated.
70
192312
2587
a religião que mais cresce
é a de não seguidores.
Os índices de depressão e problemas
de saúde mental só aumentam.
03:26
Depression rates are rising,
mental health problems are rising.
71
194923
2976
03:29
The suicide rate has risen
30 percent since 1999.
72
197923
3241
Os índices de suicídio
aumentaram 30% desde 1999.
03:33
For teen suicides
over the last several years,
73
201188
2176
Nos últimos anos, o suicídio
entre adolescentes cresceu 70%.
03:35
the suicide rate has risen by 70 percent.
74
203388
2659
03:39
Forty-five thousand Americans
kill themselves every year;
75
207249
2675
Por ano, 45 mil norte-americanos se matam;
75 mil morrem por vício em opioides.
03:41
72,000 die from opioid addictions;
76
209948
2230
03:44
life expectancy is falling, not rising.
77
212202
3349
A expectativa de vida
está em queda, não em alta.
03:48
So what I mean to tell you,
I flew out here to say
78
216985
2587
O que vim dizer a vocês aqui hoje
03:51
that we have an economic crisis,
we have environmental crisis,
79
219596
2928
é que temos uma crise
econômica, ambiental e política.
03:54
we have a political crisis.
80
222548
1365
Também vivemos uma crise
social e relacional.
03:55
We also have a social
and relational crisis;
81
223937
2079
03:58
we're in the valley.
82
226040
1339
Estamos no abismo.
03:59
We're fragmented from each other,
83
227403
1603
Estamos separados uns dos outros.
04:01
we've got cascades of lies
coming out of Washington ...
84
229030
2592
Temos incontáveis mentiras
vindas de Washington...
04:03
We're in the valley.
85
231646
1333
Estamos no abismo.
04:05
And so I've spent the last five years --
86
233466
1977
Passei os últimos cinco anos assim:
"Como sair de um abismo?"
04:07
how do you get out of a valley?
87
235467
1514
04:09
The Greeks used to say,
"You suffer your way to wisdom."
88
237356
3113
Os gregos diziam:
"O caminho da sabedoria é árduo".
04:13
And from that dark period where I started,
I've had a few realizations.
89
241006
3660
E naquele período difícil da vida,
aprendi algumas coisas.
04:17
The first is, freedom sucks.
90
245228
2921
A primeira é que a liberdade é uma droga.
04:20
Economic freedom is OK,
political freedom is great,
91
248998
2674
A liberdade econômica é legal,
a liberdade política é ótima,
04:23
social freedom sucks.
92
251696
1801
mas a liberdade social é uma droga.
04:26
The unrooted man is the adrift man.
93
254036
2327
Um homem sem raízes é um homem à deriva.
04:28
The unrooted man is the unremembered man,
because he's uncommitted to things.
94
256387
3983
Ninguém se lembra de um homem sem raízes
porque ele não se compromete com nada.
04:32
Freedom is not an ocean
you want to swim in,
95
260776
3534
A liberdade não é um oceano
no qual queremos nadar,
04:36
it's a river you want to get across,
96
264334
1730
mas um rio que queremos atravessar
04:38
so you can commit and plant yourself
on the other side.
97
266088
2666
para nos comprometer
e fincar raízes do outro lado.
04:41
The second thing I learned
98
269270
1659
A segunda coisa que aprendi
04:42
is that when you have
one of those bad moments in life,
99
270953
2596
é que, quando passamos
por momentos difíceis na vida,
04:45
you can either be broken,
100
273573
1295
ou ficamos aos cacos
ou eclodimos, nos abrimos.
04:46
or you can be broken open.
101
274892
1539
04:48
And we all know people who are broken.
102
276905
1826
Todos conhecemos pessoas despedaçadas,
04:50
They've endured some pain
or grief, they get smaller,
103
278755
2516
que passaram por alguma dor
ou tristeza e se encolheram,
04:53
they get angrier, resentful,
they lash out.
104
281295
2380
ficaram com raiva,
ressentidas, agressivas.
04:55
As the saying is,
105
283699
1155
Como diz o ditado:
04:56
"Pain that is not transformed
gets transmitted."
106
284878
2698
"A dor não transformada
acaba sendo transmitida".
04:59
But other people are broken open.
107
287927
1829
Mas outras pessoas se quebram e se abrem.
05:03
Suffering's great power
is that it's an interruption of life.
108
291125
3101
O grande poder do sofrimento
está em ser uma interrupção da vida.
05:06
It reminds you you're not the person
you thought you were.
109
294250
2769
Ele nos lembra que não somos
a pessoa que pensávamos ser.
05:09
The theologian Paul Tillich said
110
297043
1537
O teólogo Paul Tillich disse
05:10
what suffering does is it carves through
what you thought was the floor
111
298604
3417
que o sofrimento perfura o que pensávamos
ser o porão da nossa alma,
05:14
of the basement of your soul,
112
302045
1383
e ele cava mais, revelando uma cavidade,
e mais outra e mais outra.
05:15
and it carves through that,
revealing a cavity below,
113
303452
2510
05:17
and it carves through that,
revealing a cavity below.
114
305986
2492
05:20
You realize there are depths of yourself
you never anticipated,
115
308502
3009
Percebemos que há camadas
imprevistas em nós mesmos,
05:23
and only spiritual and relational food
will fill those depths.
116
311535
2951
e só o alimento espiritual e relacional
preencherá essas camadas.
05:28
And when you get down there,
you get out of the head of the ego
117
316173
2968
E, ao cavar aí, saímos da cabeça e do ego
e entramos no coração,
05:31
and you get into the heart,
118
319165
1682
05:32
the desiring heart.
119
320871
1762
o coração desejoso.
05:34
The idea that what we really yearn for
is longing and love for another,
120
322657
3631
A ideia de que o que realmente almejamos
é querer e amar o outro,
05:38
the kind of thing that Louis de Bernières
described in his book,
121
326312
3046
o tipo de coisa que Louis Bernières
descreveu em seu livro,
05:41
"Captain Corelli's Mandolin."
122
329382
1898
"O Capitão Corelli".
05:43
He had an old guy talking to his daughter
123
331304
1979
Um velho conversa com a filha
sobre seu relacionamento
05:45
about his relationship with his late wife,
124
333307
2018
com sua falecida esposa, e ele diz:
05:47
and the old guy says,
125
335349
1387
05:48
"Love itself is whatever is leftover
when being in love is burned away.
126
336760
3698
"Amor é aquilo que sobra
quando a paixão se consumiu.
05:52
And this is both an art
and a fortunate accident.
127
340482
2857
E isso é tanto uma arte
quanto um acaso fortuito.
05:55
Your mother and I had it.
128
343704
1683
Eu e sua mãe vivemos isso.
Nossas raízes cresciam na direção
um do outro no subsolo,
05:57
We had roots that grew
towards each other underground,
129
345411
2539
e, quando todas as lindas flores
tinham caído dos nossos galhos,
05:59
and when all the pretty blossoms
had fallen from our branches,
130
347974
2929
06:02
we discovered that we are
one tree and not two."
131
350927
2452
descobrimos que éramos
uma só árvore, e não duas".
06:05
That's what the heart yearns for.
132
353696
1873
É isso o que o coração anseia.
06:07
The second thing
you discover is your soul.
133
355593
2761
A segunda coisa
que descobrimos é nossa alma.
06:10
Now, I don't ask you to believe in God
or not believe in God,
134
358932
2878
Não quero que acreditem ou não em Deus,
06:13
but I do ask you to believe
that there's a piece of you
135
361834
2587
mas que acreditem que há uma parte nossa
que não tem forma, tamanho, cor nem peso,
06:16
that has no shape, size, color or weight,
136
364445
1976
mas que nos proporciona
dignidade e valor infinitos.
06:18
but that gives you
infinite dignity and value.
137
366445
2926
06:21
Rich and successful people
don't have more of this
138
369395
2357
E as pessoas ricas e bem-sucedidas
não têm mais disso do que as demais.
06:23
than less successful people.
139
371776
1365
06:25
Slavery is wrong because
it's an obliteration of another soul.
140
373974
3182
A escravidão é errada
porque é a supressão de outra alma.
O estupro não é só uma violência
contra algumas moléculas do corpo,
06:29
Rape is not just an attack
on a bunch of physical molecules,
141
377180
2834
06:32
it's an attempt to insult
another person's soul.
142
380038
2928
mas uma tentativa de insultar
a alma de outra pessoa,
06:34
And what the soul does
is it yearns for righteousness.
143
382990
3046
e a alma anseia por integridade.
06:38
The heart yearns for fusion with another,
the soul yearns for righteousness.
144
386060
3579
O coração anseia por uma fusão com
o outro, e a alma anseia por integridade.
06:41
And that led to my third realization,
which I borrowed from Einstein:
145
389663
3285
Isso me leva à terceira coisa que aprendi,
que pego emprestada de Einstein:
06:45
"The problem you have
is not going to be solved
146
393655
2486
"O seu problema não será resolvido
06:48
at the level of consciousness
on which you created it.
147
396165
2714
no nível da consciência
no qual você o criou.
06:50
You have to expand
to a different level of consciousness."
148
398903
3873
É preciso expandir-se
a um nível diferente de consciência".
06:54
So what do you do?
149
402800
1214
Então, o que fazer?
06:56
Well, the first thing you do
is you throw yourself on your friends
150
404038
3110
Bem, a primeira coisa é procurar os amigos
e ter as conversas mais profundas
que jamais tiveram.
06:59
and you have deeper conversations
that you ever had before.
151
407172
2961
Mas a segunda coisa a fazer
é encarar sozinho a solidão.
07:02
But the second thing you do,
152
410157
1357
07:03
you have to go out alone
into the wilderness.
153
411538
2134
Ir a um lugar onde não haja
ninguém para quem se exibir,
07:05
You go out into that place
where there's nobody there to perform,
154
413696
3072
em que não tenha a ver
com o ego, e ele desmorone,
07:08
and the ego has nothing to do,
and it crumbles,
155
416792
2380
e só então você será capaz de ser amado.
07:11
and only then are you capable
of being loved.
156
419196
2159
07:13
I have a friend who said
that when her daughter was born,
157
421712
3337
Tenho uma amiga que diz
que, quando a filha nasceu,
07:17
she realized that she loved her
more than evolution required.
158
425073
3603
ela percebeu que amava o bebê
mais do que a evolução demandava.
(Risos)
07:21
(Laughter)
159
429041
1143
07:22
And I've always loved that.
160
430208
1405
E sempre adorei isso,
07:23
(Applause)
161
431637
1142
(Aplausos)
07:24
Because it talks about the peace
that's at the deep of ourself,
162
432803
2957
porque fala sobre a paz
que está no fundo de nós,
07:27
our inexplicable care for one another.
163
435784
2705
e nosso inexplicável cuidado
uns com os outros.
07:30
And when you touch that spot,
you're ready to be rescued.
164
438513
2944
E, quando tocamos aquele ponto,
estamos prontos para ser resgatados.
07:33
The hard thing about
when you're in the valley
165
441815
2316
O difícil quando estamos no abismo
07:37
is that you can't climb out;
166
445300
1348
é que não conseguimos sair;
alguém tem de nos tirar de lá.
07:38
somebody has to reach in and pull you out.
167
446672
2157
07:41
It happened to me.
168
449331
1155
Aconteceu comigo.
07:42
I got, luckily, invited over to a house
by a couple named Kathy and David,
169
450510
3527
Felizmente fui convidado à casa
de um casal, a Kathy e o David,
07:46
and they were --
170
454061
1405
Eles tinham um filho, o Santi,
numa escola pública em Washington, DC.
07:48
They had a kid in the DC
public school, his name's Santi.
171
456196
2675
Santi tinha um amigo com a mãe doente
e ele precisava de um lugar pra ficar.
07:50
Santi had a friend
who needed a place to stay
172
458895
2102
07:53
because his mom had some health issues.
173
461021
1866
E aquele garoto tinha um amigo,
que tinha um amigo, que tinha um amigo...
07:54
And then that kid had a friend
and that kid had a friend.
174
462911
2682
07:57
When I went to their house six years ago,
175
465617
2008
Ao visitá-los, seis anos atrás,
07:59
I walk in the door, there's like
25 around the kitchen table,
176
467649
2897
havia umas 25 pessoas ao redor da mesa,
um outro tanto dormindo no porão.
08:02
a whole bunch sleeping
downstairs in the basement.
177
470570
2349
08:04
I reach out to introduce myself to a kid,
178
472943
2063
Fui me apresentar para um garoto,
08:07
and he says, "We don't really
shake hands here.
179
475030
2604
e ele disse: "Nós não apertamos mãos aqui.
08:10
We just hug here."
180
478331
1448
Aqui, a gente se abraça".
08:12
And I'm not the huggiest guy
on the face of the earth,
181
480323
2976
E não sou exatamente o cara
mais "abraçável" da face da Terra,
08:15
but I've been going back to that home
every Thursday night when I'm in town,
182
483323
3579
mas volto àquela casa toda quinta
à noite quando estou na cidade,
e abraço aquela garotada.
08:18
and just hugging all those kids.
183
486926
1544
08:20
They demand intimacy.
184
488494
1885
Eles demandam intimidade,
que nos entreguemos totalmente.
08:22
They demand that you behave in a way
where you're showing all the way up.
185
490403
3610
08:26
And they teach you a new way to live,
186
494442
1794
E nos ensinam um jeito novo de viver,
08:28
which is the cure
for all the ills of our culture
187
496260
2301
que é a cura para as doenças
da nossa cultura:
08:30
which is a way of direct --
really putting relationship first,
188
498585
2946
colocar a relação em primeiro lugar,
não só no discurso, mas de verdade.
08:33
not just as a word, but as a reality.
189
501555
3170
08:37
And the beautiful thing is,
these communities are everywhere.
190
505557
4071
E o melhor é que essas comunidades
estão por toda parte.
08:41
I started something at the Aspen Institute
called "Weave: The Social Fabric."
191
509652
3647
Comecei algo no Aspen Institute:
o "Weave: The Social Fabric".
Este aqui é o nosso logo.
08:45
This is our logo here.
192
513323
1156
08:46
And we plop into a place and we find
weavers anywhere, everywhere.
193
514503
3733
Vamos a um lugar e encontramos
tecelões em todo e qualquer lugar.
08:50
We find people like Asiaha Butler,
who grew up in --
194
518761
2517
Encontramos pessoas como Asiaha Butler,
que viveu em Chicago,
em Englewood, um bairro violento.
08:54
who lived in Chicago, in Englewood,
in a tough neighborhood.
195
522056
2817
08:56
And she was about to move
because it was so dangerous,
196
524897
2953
Ela estava prestes a se mudar
porque era perigoso demais,
09:00
and she looked across the street
and she saw two little girls
197
528173
2868
olhou do outro lado da rua
e viu duas menininhas
brincando num terreno baldio
com garrafas quebradas,
09:03
playing in an empty lot
with broken bottles,
198
531065
2076
09:05
and she turned to her husband
and she said, "We're not leaving.
199
533165
3182
e ela disse ao marido:
"Não vamos nos mudar.
09:08
We're not going to be just another family
that abandon that."
200
536371
2976
Não vamos ser mais uma família
a abandonar aquilo".
Ela buscou no Google
"voluntaridado em Englewood",
09:11
And she Googled "volunteer in Englewood,"
and now she runs R.A.G.E.,
201
539371
3208
e hoje ela dirige R.A.G.E.,
grande organização comunitária lá.
09:14
the big community organization there.
202
542603
1797
09:16
Some of these people
have had tough valleys.
203
544424
2979
Algumas dessas pessoas
viveram abismos profundos.
09:19
I met a woman named Sarah in Ohio
who came home from an antiquing trip
204
547427
3705
Conheci uma mulher chamada Sarah, em Ohio,
que chegou de uma viagem
09:23
and found that her husband
had killed himself and their two kids.
205
551156
3762
e descobriu que o marido tinha se matado
e matado seus dois filhos.
09:27
She now runs a free pharmacy,
she volunteers in the community,
206
555815
3380
Hoje ela gerencia uma farmácia gratuita,
é voluntária na comunidade,
09:31
she helps women cope
with violence, she teaches.
207
559219
2992
e ajuda mulheres a lidarem
com violência, ela ensina.
09:34
She told me, "I grew from this
experience because I was angry.
208
562235
3064
Ela contou: "Superei essa experiência
porque estava com raiva.
09:37
I was going to fight back against
what he tried to do to me
209
565323
2770
Resolvi me vingar
do que ele tentou fazer comigo
09:40
by making a difference in the world.
210
568117
1746
fazendo a diferença no mundo.
09:41
See, he didn't kill me.
211
569887
2055
Veja, ele não me matou.
09:43
My response to him is,
212
571966
1185
Minha resposta pra ele é:
09:45
'Whatever you meant to do to me,
screw you, you're not going to do it.'"
213
573175
4196
'Seja lá o que você queria fazer comigo,
dane-se, você não vai conseguir'".
09:50
These weavers are not living
an individualistic life,
214
578029
3373
Esses tecelões não estão vivendo
uma vida individualista,
estão vivendo uma vida relacional
e têm valores diferentes.
09:53
they're living a relationist life,
they have a different set of values.
215
581426
3373
Eles têm motivações morais,
certeza vocacional, eles criam raízes.
09:56
They have moral motivations.
216
584823
1420
09:58
They have vocational certitude,
they have planted themselves down.
217
586267
3128
10:01
I met a guy in Youngstown, Ohio,
218
589419
1587
Conheci um cara em Youngstown, Ohio,
que segurava um cartaz na praça:
10:03
who just held up a sign
in the town square,
219
591030
2031
"Proteja Youngstown".
10:05
"Defend Youngstown."
220
593085
1151
10:06
They have radical mutuality,
221
594260
1873
Elas têm mutualidade radical,
10:08
and they are geniuses at relationship.
222
596157
2533
e são gênios para se relacionar.
10:11
There's a woman named Mary Gordon
223
599180
1675
Conheci Mary Gordon,
que dirige o projeto "Roots of Empathy".
10:12
who runs something
called Roots of Empathy.
224
600879
2123
10:15
And what they do is they take
a bunch of kids, an eighth grade class,
225
603026
3265
Eles pegam um grupo
de alunos da oitava série,
10:18
they put a mom and an infant,
226
606315
1739
trazem uma mãe e um bebê,
10:20
and then the students have to guess
what the infant is thinking,
227
608078
3024
e aí os jovens têm de adivinhar
o que o bebê está pensando,
10:23
to teach empathy.
228
611126
1151
para ensinar empatia.
10:24
There was one kid in a class
who was bigger than the rest
229
612301
3106
Havia um menino na sala,
maior do que os demais,
10:27
because he'd been held back,
been through the foster care system,
230
615431
3583
porque ele tinha perdido o ano,
vivido em lares adotivos,
10:31
seen his mom get killed.
231
619038
1626
e visto a mãe ser morta.
10:32
And he wanted to hold the baby.
232
620688
1881
E ele queria segurar o bebê.
E a mãe estava nervosa
porque ele era grandão e intimidador.
10:34
And the mom was nervous
because he looked big and scary.
233
622593
2635
10:37
But she let this kid,
Darren, hold the baby.
234
625252
2595
Mas ela deixou esse jovem,
o Darren, segurar o bebê.
10:39
He held it, and he was great with it.
235
627871
1849
Ele o segurou, e mostrou
que tinha jeito pra segurá-lo.
10:43
He gave the baby back and started
asking questions about parenthood.
236
631014
3486
Ele devolveu o bebê e começou a fazer
perguntas sobre paternidade.
10:47
And his final question was,
237
635015
1929
E sua última pergunta foi:
10:48
"If nobody has ever loved you,
do you think you can be a good father?"
238
636968
3301
"Alguém que nunca foi amado
poderia se tornar um bom pai?"
10:52
And so what Roots of Empathy does
239
640642
1667
A Roots of Empathy resgata essas pessoas
e as tira do fundo do abismo.
10:54
is they reach down and they grab
people out of the valley.
240
642333
2720
10:57
And that's what weavers are doing.
241
645077
1853
E é isso o que os tecelões estão fazendo.
11:01
Some of them switch jobs.
242
649300
2187
Algumas delas trocam de função.
11:03
Some of them stay in their same jobs.
243
651950
2531
Algumas continuam na mesma função.
11:06
But one thing is,
they have an intensity to them.
244
654982
2500
Mas uma coisa é certa:
elas fazem tudo intensamente.
11:09
I read this --
245
657982
1383
11:11
E.O. Wilson wrote a great book
called "Naturalist," about his childhood.
246
659389
5987
E.O. Wilson escreveu um grande livro
sobre sua infância, o "Naturalista".
11:17
When he was seven,
his parents were divorcing.
247
665712
2699
Quando ele tinha sete anos,
os pais estavam se divorciando.
11:21
And they sent him
to Paradise Beach in North Florida.
248
669291
3167
E eles o mandaram a Paradise Beach,
no norte da Flórida.
11:24
And he'd never seen the ocean before.
249
672482
1836
E ele nunca tinha visto o mar.
11:26
And he'd never seen a jellyfish before.
250
674731
2331
E nunca tinha visto uma água-viva.
E escreveu: "A criatura
era impressionante,
11:29
He wrote, "The creature was astonishing.
It existed beyond my imagination."
251
677086
4091
ela existia para além
da minha imaginação".
11:33
He was sitting on the dock one day
252
681596
1661
Um dia, sentado no cais,
11:35
and he saw a stingray
float beneath his feet.
253
683281
2737
ele viu uma arraia boiar
abaixo de seus pés.
11:38
And at that moment, a naturalist was born
in the awe and wonder.
254
686365
4080
Naquele momento, um naturalista nasceu,
cheio de admiração e maravilhamento.
11:42
And he makes this observation:
255
690469
2145
E ele faz esta observação:
quando crianças, enxergamos
os animais com o dobro do tamanho
11:44
that when you're a child,
256
692638
1217
11:45
you see animals at twice the size
as you do as an adult.
257
693879
3147
do que quando somos adultos.
11:50
And that has always impressed me,
258
698162
1774
E aquilo sempre me impressionou,
11:51
because what we want as kids
is that moral intensity,
259
699960
4760
porque o que queremos como crianças
é aquela intensidade moral,
11:56
to be totally given ourselves
over to something
260
704744
2944
para nos rendermos completamente a algo
11:59
and to find that level of vocation.
261
707712
2334
e encontrar aquele nível de vocação.
12:02
And when you are around these weavers,
262
710480
1969
E, quando estamos perto desses tecelões,
12:04
they see other people
at twice the size as normal people.
263
712473
2968
eles veem todos o dobro do tamanho
do que as pessoas normais veem.
12:07
They see deeper into them.
264
715465
1733
Eles veem as pessoas mais fundo.
12:09
And what they see is joy.
265
717997
2158
O que eles veem é alegria.
12:13
On the first mountain of our life,
when we're shooting for our career,
266
721315
3404
Na primeira escalada da nossa vida,
quando estamos subindo na carreira,
12:16
we shoot for happiness.
267
724743
2159
lutamos por felicidade.
12:19
And happiness is good,
it's the expansion of self.
268
727649
3047
A felicidade é uma coisa boa,
é a expansão do ser.
12:22
You win a victory,
269
730720
1746
Conquistamos uma vitória,
12:24
you get a promotion,
your team wins the Super Bowl,
270
732490
3993
recebemos uma promoção,
nosso time vence um campeonato,
12:28
you're happy.
271
736507
1150
ficamos felizes.
12:30
Joy is not the expansion of self,
it's the dissolving of self.
272
738149
3721
A alegria não é expansão do ser,
mas a dissolução do ser.
12:34
It's the moment when the skin barrier
disappears between a mother and her child,
273
742764
4238
É o momento em que a barreira da pele
desaparece entre a mãe e o filho.
12:39
it's the moment when a naturalist
feels just free in nature.
274
747026
3309
É o momento em que um naturalista
se sente livre na natureza.
12:43
It's the moment where you're so lost
in your work or a cause,
275
751232
2945
É o momento em que estamos tão
entregues a um trabalho ou uma causa
12:46
you have totally self-forgotten.
276
754201
2000
que nos esquecemos
totalmente de nós mesmos.
12:48
And joy is a better thing
to aim for than happiness.
277
756649
2886
E vale mais a pena buscar
a alegria do que a felicidade.
12:51
I collect passages of joy,
of people when they lose it.
278
759559
3041
Coleciono momentos de alegria,
de quando as pessoas a perdem.
12:54
One of my favorite is from Zadie Smith.
279
762624
2247
Um dos meus favoritos é de Zadie Smith.
12:56
In 1999, she was in a London nightclub,
280
764895
3310
Em 1999, ela estava numa boate em Londres,
13:00
looking for her friends,
wondering where her handbag was.
281
768229
3095
procurando suas amigas,
tentando achar sua bolsa.
13:03
And suddenly, as she writes,
282
771348
2103
De repente, como ela escreveu:
"Um homem magérrimo de olhos enormes
13:05
"... a rail-thin man with enormous eyes
reached across a sea of bodies
283
773475
3322
se esgueirou em meio a um mar
de corpos pra pegar minha mão.
13:08
for my hand.
284
776821
1176
13:10
He kept asking me the same thing
over and over, 'Are you feeling it?'
285
778021
3739
Ele me perguntava a mesma coisa:
"Você está sentindo?"
13:13
My ridiculous heels were killing me,
I was terrified that I might die,
286
781784
3849
Meus saltos absurdos estavam me matando,
estava apavorada com medo de morrer,
13:17
yet I felt simultaneously
overwhelmed with delight
287
785657
2448
mas me sentia extremamente feliz
com a música 'Can I Kick It?' tocando
13:20
that 'Can I Kick It?'
should happen to be playing
288
788129
2311
nesse exato momento da história
do mundo na caixa de som,
13:22
on this precise moment
in the history of the world
289
790464
2346
13:24
on the sound system,
290
792834
1155
e que agora mudava para 'Teen Spirit'.
13:26
and it was now morphing
into 'Teen Spirit.'
291
794013
2128
13:28
I took the man's hand,
the top of my head blew away,
292
796165
3158
Peguei a mão dele,
simplesmente enlouqueci,
13:31
we danced, we danced,
we gave ourselves up to joy."
293
799347
3400
nós dançamos e dançamos,
nos entregamos à alegria".
13:35
And so what I'm trying to describe
is two different life mindsets.
294
803680
3806
Então, o que estou tentando descrever
são duas mentalidades de vida diferentes.
13:39
The first mountain mindset, which is about
individual happiness and career success.
295
807998
4468
A primeira, a da escalada,
ligada à felicidade individual
e ao sucesso profissional.
13:44
And it's a good mindset,
I have nothing against it.
296
812490
2563
É uma boa mentalidade, nada contra ela.
13:47
But we're in a national valley,
297
815077
2294
Mas estamos num abismo nacional
13:49
because we don't have
the other mindset to balance it.
298
817395
2833
porque não temos a outra mentalidade
para equilibrar isso.
13:52
We no longer feel good
about ourselves as a people,
299
820252
2563
Não nos sentimos bem como pessoas mais,
13:54
we've lost our defining
faith in our future,
300
822839
2690
perdemos nossa fé determinante no futuro,
13:57
we don't see each other deeply,
we don't treat each other as well.
301
825553
3382
não enxergamos os outros profundamente,
não tratamos os outros tão bem.
14:01
And we need a lot of changes.
302
829538
1991
E precisamos de muitas mudanças.
14:03
We need an economic change
and environmental change.
303
831553
2706
Precisamos de uma mudança
econômica e ambiental.
14:06
But we also need a cultural
and relational revolution.
304
834902
2945
Mas também precisamos
de uma revolução cultural e relacional.
14:09
We need to name the language
of a recovered society.
305
837871
4270
Precisamos dar nome à língua
de uma sociedade recuperada.
14:14
And to me, the weavers
have found that language.
306
842553
2738
Para mim, os tecelões
encontraram essa linguagem.
14:17
My theory of social change
is that society changes
307
845593
3101
Minha teoria da mudança social
é de que a sociedade muda
quando um pequeno grupo encontra
uma forma melhor de viver,
14:20
when a small group of people
find a better way to live,
308
848718
2645
14:23
and the rest of us copy them.
309
851387
1675
e o restante o imita.
14:25
And these weavers have found
a better way to live.
310
853765
2638
Esses tecelões encontraram
uma forma melhor de viver.
14:28
And you don't have to theorize about it.
311
856427
1953
Não é preciso teorizar a respeito disso.
14:30
They are out there as community builders
all around the country.
312
858404
3229
Eles estão por aí como líderes
comunitários em todo o país.
14:34
We just have to shift our lives a little,
313
862277
2277
Só precisamos mudar nossa vida um pouco,
14:36
so we can say, "I'm a weaver,
we're a weaver."
314
864578
2731
de modo que possamos dizer:
"Sou um tecelão, somos tecelões".
14:39
And if we do that,
315
867999
1366
E, ao fazer isso,
14:42
the hole inside ourselves gets filled,
316
870079
2349
o vazio dentro de nós se preenche,
14:44
but more important,
the social unity gets repaired.
317
872452
2825
mas, acima de tudo,
a unidade social se regenera.
14:47
Thank you very much.
318
875301
1167
Muito obrigado.
14:48
(Applause)
319
876492
4065
(Aplausos)
