ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Mohamed Ali - Human rights advocate
Human rights advocate Mohamed Ali fights terrorism with entrepreneurship.

Why you should listen

In urban hubs like Mogadishu, says Mohamed Ali, we're losing our brightest minds to terrorism and violence. Why not channel the energy of ambitious and eager young people toward innovation instead of destruction? Ali is doing his part to make this dream a reality. He is the Executive Director of the Iftiin Foundation, an organization that builds and supports young entrepreneurs to encourage a culture of change and innovation in Somalia and other post-conflict countries. Ali believes these untapped youths can become figures of hope for their communities and ultimately promote peace and stability in the region.

Ali is a founding member of End Famine, a campaign founded in 2011 aimed at promoting food security and eradicating famine worldwide, starting with the Horn of Africa. Ali has a law degree from Boston College Law School.

It is the story of the disenfranchised,

unemployed urban youth

te cilet kerkojne dicka ndryshe nga pritja.
02:25
For young people, the promise of the city,
52
133665
2664
Per te rinjte, premtimi i qytetit,
02:28
the big city dream is that of opportunity,
53
136329
2694
endrra e qytetit te madh eshte mundesia,
02:31
of jobs, of wealth,
54
139023
2155
e punes, e pasurise,
02:33
but young people are not sharing
in the prosperity of their cities.
55
141178
3741
por te rinjte nuk kane pjese
ne mireqenien e qyteteve te tyre.
02:36
Often it's youth who suffer from
the highest unemployment rates.
56
144919
4098
Shpesh eshte rinia ajo qe
vuan shifrat e larta te papunesise.
02:41
By 2030, three out of five people living in cities
57
149017
3193
Ne 2030, tre nga pese njerez qe do jetojne neper qytete
02:44
will be under the age of 18.
58
152210
2560
do jene nen moshen 18.
02:46
If we do not include young people
59
154770
1764
Nese nuk perfshijme njerez te rinj
02:48
in the growth of our cities,
60
156534
1819
ne zhvillimin e qyteteve,
02:50
if we do not provide them opportunities,
61
158353
2479
nese nuk i japim atyre mundesi,
02:52
the story of waithood,
62
160832
2022
historia e pritjes,
02:54
the gateway to terrorism, to violence, to gangs,
63
162854
2913
rrugedalja ne terrorisem, ne dhune, ne banda,
02:57
will be the story of cities 2.0.
64
165767
4175
do jete historia e qyteteve 2.0.
03:01
And in my city of birth, Mogadishu,
65
169942
3161
Dhe ne qytetin tim te lindjes, ne Mogadishu,
03:05
70 percent of young people
suffer from unemployment.
66
173103
3690
70 perqind e te rinjve vuajne nga papunesia.
03:08
70 percent don't work,
67
176793
2378
70 perqind nuk punojne,
03:11
don't go to school.
68
179171
2027
nuk shkollohen.
03:13
They pretty much do nothing.
69
181198
2425
Ata pak a shume nuk bejne asgje.
03:15
I went back to Mogadishu last month,
70
183623
3516
U ktheva ne Mogadishu muajin e kaluar,
03:19
and I went to visit Madina Hospital,
71
187139
2010
dhe vajta te vizitoja spitalin Madina,
03:21
the hospital I was born in.
72
189149
2048
spitalin ne te cilin kam lindur.
03:23
I remember standing in front of that
73
191197
2025
Me kujtohej tek qendroja para
03:25
bullet-ridden hospital thinking,
74
193222
2978
atij spitali shoshe nga plumbat duke menduar,
03:28
what if I had never left?
75
196200
2033
po sikur mos te isha larguar kurre?
03:30
What if I had been forced
76

1193
Po sikur te isha detyruar
03:31
into that same state of waithood?
77
199426
2519
ne te njejten situate te pritjes?
03:33
Would I have become a terrorist?
78
201945

A do isha bere nje terrorist?
03:37
I'm not really sure about the answer.
79

Nuk jam shume i sigurt per pergjigjen.
03:40
My reason for being in Mogadishu that month
80
208847
2168
Arsyeja ime e te qenit ne Mogadishu ate muaj
03:43
was actually to host
81
211015
1547
ishte ne te vertete per te mbajtur
03:44
a youth leadership and entrepreneurship summit.
82
212562
2547
nje Samit mbi drejtimin dhe sipermarrjen.
03:47
I brought together about 90 young Somali leaders.
83
215109
2996
Une solla aty rreth 90 udheheqes te rinj Somalez.
03:50
We sat down and brainstormed on solutions

U ulem dhe dhame ide mbi zgjidhjen

03:55
One of the young men in the room was Aden.
86
223227
3402
Nje nga te rinjte ne ate salle ishte Aden.
03:58
He went to university in Mogadishu, graduated.
87
226629
4455
Ai eshte diplomuar ne universitetin e Mogadishut.
04:03
There were no jobs, no opportunities.
88
231084
2189
Nuk kishte pune, nuk kishte mundesi.
04:05
I remember him telling me,
89
233273
1718
Me kujtohet kur me thoshte,
04:06
because he was a college graduate,
90
234991
2808
duke qene nje i diplomuar universiteti,
04:09
unemployed, frustrated,
91
237799
2750
i papune, i irrituar,
04:12
that he was the perfect target for al Shabaab
92
240549
2397
se ai ishte objektivi perfekt per al Shabaab
04:14
and other terrorist organizations, to be recruited.
93
242946
3052
dhe per te tjera organizata terroriste,
per tu rekrutuar.
04:17
They sought people like him out.
94
245998
3878
Ata i kerkonin njerezit si ai.
04:21
But his story takes a different route.
95
249876
3096
Por kjo histori merr nje rruge ndryshe.
04:24
In Mogadishu, the biggest barrier
96
252972
1937
Ne Mogadishu, pengesa me e madhe
04:26
to getting from point A to point B are the roads.
97
254909
3253
per te kaluar nga pika A ne piken B jane rruget.
04:30
Twenty-three years of civil war
98
258162
1783
Njezet e tre vjet lufte civile
04:31
have completely destroyed the road system,
99
259945
2231
e kane demtuar totalisht sistemin rrugor,
04:34
and a motorbike can be the easiest way
100
262176
2009
dhe nje motociklete mund te jete menyra me e lehte
04:36
to get around.
101
264185
1630
per te levizur.
04:37
Aden saw an opportunity and seized it.
102
265815
3241
Aden pa nje mundesi dhe e pushtoi.
04:41
He started a motorbike company.
103
269056
2125
Ai nisi nje kompani motocikletash.
04:43
He began renting out motorbikes
104
271181
2291
Nisi te japi me qera motocikleta
04:45
to local residents who couldn't normally afford them.
105
273472
3300
tek banoret lokal qe normalisht nuk i perballonin ato.
04:48
He bought 10 bikes, with the help
106
276772
2021
Ai bleu 10 motocikleta, me ndihmen
04:50
of family and friends,
107
278793
1698
e familjes dhe te miqve,
04:52
and his dream is to eventually expand
108
280491
1733
dhe endrra e tij eshte qe te zgjerohet
04:54
to several hundred within the next three years.
109
282224
2981
ne disa qindra brenda tre vjeteve ne vazhdim.
04:57
How is this story different?
110
285205
2568
Si eshte kjo histori ndryshe?
04:59
What makes his story different?
111
287773
2357
Cfare e ben historine e tij ndryshe?
05:02
I believe it is his ability to identify
112
290130
2830
Mendoj se eshte aftesia e tij te identifikoje
05:04
and seize a new opportunity.
113
292960
3338
dhe te perhape mundesi te reja.
05:08
It's entrepreneurship,
114
296298
2031
Eshte sipermarrje,
05:10
and I believe entrepreneurship can be
115
298329
1759
dhe mendoj se sipermarrja mund te behet
05:12
the most powerful tool against waithood.
116
300088
2978
vegla me e fuqishme kundra pritjes.
05:15
It empowers young people
117
303066
1770
Ajo fuqizon njerez te rinj
05:16
to be the creators of the very economic opportunities
118
304836
3380
te jene krijuesit e mundesive ekonomike
05:20
they are so desperately seeking.
119
308216
2498
qe ata po kerkojne me kaq deshperim.
05:22
And you can train young people to be entrepreneurs.
120
310714
3682
Dhe njerezit e rinj mund te trajnohen te jene sipermarres.
05:26
I want to talk to you about a young man
121
314396
2116
Deshiroj t'ju flas per nje djale te ri
05:28
who attended one of my meetings,
122
316512
2289
i cili mori pjese ne nje nga mbledhjet e mia,
05:30
Mohamed Mohamoud, a florist.
123
318801
2884
Mohamed Mohamoud, nje luleshites.
05:33
He was helping me train some of the young people
124
321685
1683
Ai me ndihmoi te trajnoja disa njerez te rinj
05:35
at the summit in entrepreneurship
125
323368
1437
ne samitin e sipermarrjes
05:36
and how to be innovative
126
324805
1622
dhe si te sjellesh risi
05:38
and how to create a culture of entrepreneurship.
127
326427
2767
dhe si te krijosh nje kulture mbi sipermarrjen.
05:41
He's actually the first florist Mogadishu has seen
128
329194
2497
Ai faktikisht eshte luleshitesi i pare qe Mogadishu ka pare
05:43
in over 22 years,
129
331691
2684
keto 22 vjet,
05:46
and until recently, until Mohamed came along,
130
334375
3264
dhe deri kohet e fundit, deri sa doli Mohamedi,
05:49
if you wanted flowers at your wedding,
131
337639
1890
nese te duheshin lule per dasmen
05:51
you used plastic bouquets
132
339529
1393
ti perdorje buqeta plastike
05:52
shipped from abroad.
133
340922
1586
te ardhura nga jashte.
05:54
If you asked someone,
134
342508
1806
Nese do pyesje dike,
05:56
"When was the last time you saw fresh flowers?"
135
344314
2275
"Kur ka qene hera fundit qe ke pare lule te fresketa?"
05:58
for many who grew up under civil war,
136
346589
2586
per shume qe u rriten gjate luftes civile,
06:01
the answer would be, "Never."
137
349175
2783
pergjigja do ishte, "Kurre."
06:03
So Mohamed saw an opportunity.
138
351958
1948
Pra Mohamed pa nje mundesi.
06:05
He started a landscaping and design floral company.
139
353906
4447
Ai filloi nje kompani qe merrej me rregullim
kopshtesh dhe dizenjim floral.
06:10
He created a farm right outside of Mogadishu,
140
358353
3308
Krijoi nje ferme jashte Mogadishut,
06:13
and started growing tulips and lilies,
141
361661
2056
dhe nisi te rrisi lloje tulipane dhe zambake,
06:15
which he said could survive
142
363717
1706
te cilat mund te mbijetonin ne
06:17
the harsh Mogadishu climate.
143
365423
2711
klimen e ashper te Mogadishut.
06:20
And he began delivering flowers to weddings,
144
368134
3698
Dhe nisi te shperndaje lule neper dasma,
06:23
creating gardens at homes
145
371832

te krijoje kopshte neper shtepite
06:25
and businesses around the city,
146
373765
2604
dhe bizneset e qytetit,
06:28
and he's now working on creating
147
376369
1737
dhe tashme eshte duke punuar ne krijimin
06:30
Mogadishu's first public park in 22 years.
148
378106
3625
e parkut te pare publik ne Mogadishu pas 22 vitesh.
06:33
There's no public park in Mogadishu.
149
381731
2099
Nuk ka park publik ne Mogadishu.
06:35
He wants to create a space where families,
150
383830
2329
Ai deshiron te krijoje nje hapesire ku familjet,
06:38
young people, can come together,
151
386159
1651
njerez te rinj, mund te bashkohen,
06:39
and, as he says, smell the proverbial roses.
152
387810
4638
dhe sic thote ai, te nuhasin trendafilat proverbial.
06:44
And he doesn't grow roses because
153
392448
1956
Ai nuk rrit trendafila
06:46
they use too much water, by the way.
154
394404
4124
sepse ato perdorin shume uje.
06:50
So the first step is to inspire young people,
155
398528
4312
Pra hapi i pare eshte te inspirosh njerez te rinj,
06:54
and in that room, Mohamed's presence
156
402840
2192
dhe ne ate dhome, prezenca e Mohamedit
06:57
had a really profound impact
on the youth in that room.
157
405032
3476
kishte nje impakt vertet te thelle
tek te rinjte prezent.
07:00
They had never really thought
about starting up a business.
158
408508
2587
Ata nuk kishin menduar kurre te nisnin nje biznes.
07:03
They've thought about working for an NGO,
159
411095
1847
Kishin menduar te punonin per nje OJQ,
07:04
working for the government,
160
412942
1687
per te punuar per qeverine,
07:06
but his story, his innovation,
161
414629
4307
por historia e tij, risia e tij,
07:10
really had a strong impact on them.
162
418936
1953
kishte nje impakt te forte mbi ata.
07:12
He forced them to look at their city
163
420889
2119
Ai i detyroi ta shohin qytetin e tyre
07:15
as a place of opportunity.
164
423008
1754
si vendi i mundesive.
07:16
He empowered them to believe
that they could be entrepreneurs,
165
424762
3748
I fuqizoi ata te besojne se
mund te behen sipermarres,
07:20
that they could be change makers.
166
428510
2420
se mund te behen ndryshim beres.
07:22
By the end of the day, they were coming up
167
430930
1560
Ne fund te dites, ata erdhen
07:24
with innovative solutions
168
432490
1551
me zgjidhje te reja
07:26
to some of the biggest challenges facing their city.
169
434041
3332
per disa nga sfidat me te medha
qe po kalonte qyteti i tyre.
07:29
They came up with entrepreneurial solutions
170
437373
2603
Erdhen me zgjidhje sipermarrese
07:31
to local problems.
171
439976
2922
per problemet lokale.
07:34
So inspiring young people
172
442898
2231
Pra te frymezosh te rinjte
07:37
and creating a culture of entrepreneurship
173
445129
2414
dhe te krijosh kulturen e sipermarrjes
07:39
is a really great step,
174
447543
1867
eshte nje hap shume i madh,
07:41
but young people need capital
175
449410
1689
por njerezit e rinj duan nje kapital
07:43
to make their ideas a reality.
176
451099
1789
per te kthyer idete ne realitet.
07:44
They need expertise and mentorship
177
452888
2324
Kan nevoje per expertize dhe tutore
07:47
to guide them in developing
and launching their businesses.
178
455212
3400
per ti udhezuar ne zhvillimin dhe hapjen e bizneseve.
07:50
Connect young people with the resources they need,
179
458612
2487
Lidhini te rinjte me burimet qe u nevojiten,
07:53
provide them the support they need
to go from ideation to creation,
180
461099
3465
sigurojini mbeshtetjen qe u nevojitet
per te kaluar nga idete tek krijimi,
07:56
and you will create catalysts for urban growth.
181
464564
4100
dhe do krijoni katalizatore per zhvillimin urban.
08:00
For me, entrepreneurship is more than just
182
468664
2924
Per mua, sipermarrja eshte me shume se
08:03
starting up a business.
183
471588
1556
thjesht hapja e nje biznesi.
08:05
It's about creating a social impact.
184
473144
2381
Eshte per krijimin e impaktit social.
08:07
Mohamed is not simply selling flowers.
185
475525
2135
Mohamed nuk eshte thjesht nje shites lulesh.
08:09
I believe he is selling hope.
186
477660
2487
Une mendoj se ai po shet shprese.
08:12
His Peace Park, and that's what he calls it,
187
480147
2589
Parku i Paqes i tij, se keshtu e quan ai,
08:14
when it's created, will actually transform
188
482736
2172
kur te krijohet, realisht do ndryshoje
08:16
the way people see their city.
189
484908
2072
menyren se si njerezit e shohin qytetin e tyre.
08:18

These young entrepreneurs are having

a tremendous impact in their cities.

Pra sugjerimi im eshte,
08:36
turn youth into entrepreneurs,
197
504069
