Dr. Nadia Lopez is pioneering a path of inspired leadership. The founding principal of Mott Hall Bridges Academy, a New York City Public School, Lopez became a viral sensation after one of her students was featured on the popular blog, Humans of New York. Millions of people around the world discovered the positive learning environment, high expectations and growing success rate at her school, which is located right in the middle of one of the most under-served communities in America. In 2015 a Humans of New York fundraiser raised $1.4 million to take Lopez's students on college trips that include Harvard University, Summer STEAM programs and college scholarships.

Nadia Lopez: Why open a school? To close a prison

When I opened Mott Hall
Bridges Academy in 2010,

Në vitin 2010,
kur hapa Mott Hall Bridges Academy,
00:18
my goal was simple:
1
6037
1637
qëllimi ishte i thjeshtë:
00:20
open a school to close a prison.
2
8555
3008
të hap një shkollë
për të mbyllur një burg.
00:24
Now to some, this was an audacious goal,
3
12525
2985
Për disa, ky ishte një hap i guximshëm,
00:27
because our school is located
in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn --
4
15534
3627
sepse shkolla jonë gjendej
në lagjen Brownsville të Brooklyn-it --
00:31
one of the most underserved
and violent neighborhoods
5
19773
3200
prej lagjeve më të dhunshme
dhe të braktisura
00:34
in all of New York City.
6
22997
2066
në gjithë qytetin e New York-ut.
00:38
Like many urban schools
with high poverty rates,
7
26121
3552
Si shumë shkolla të qytetit
me shkallë të lartë të varfërisë,
edhe ne hasim në shumë sfida,
00:42
we face numerous challenges,
8
30427
2080
siç është të gjejmë mësues
të cilët arrijnë t'i kuptojnë
00:45
like finding teachers who can empathize
9
33173
2426
00:47
with the complexities
of a disadvantaged community,
10
35623
3597
problemet e një shoqërie të privuar,
00:52
lack of funding for technology,
11
40054
2597
mungesa e fondeve për teknologji,
00:54
low parental involvement
12
42675
1940
mos-interesimi i prindërve
00:57
and neighborhood gangs that recruit
children as early as fourth grade.
13
45433
5924
dhe bandat e lagjes që "punësojnë" fëmijë
qysh nga klasa e katërt.
01:04
So here I was,
14
52886
1406
Dhe ja ku isha unë,
01:07
the founding principal of a middle school
that was a district public school,
15
55416
5726
drejtoreshë e një shkolle fillore
të sektorit publik,
01:13
and I only had 45 kids to start.
16
61728
3127
me vetëm 45 fëmijë për t'ia filluar.
01:18
Thirty percent of them had special needs.
17
66024
2516
30% prej tyre ishin me nevoja të veçanta.
01:21
Eighty-six percent of them
were below grade level
18
69797
3041
86% prej tyre ishin nën nivelin mesatar
01:24
in English and in math.
19
72862
2022
në Gjuhë Angleze dhe Matematikë.
01:27
And 100 percent were living
below the poverty level.
20
75701
4270
Dhe 100% jetonin në varfëri të skajshme.
01:33
If our children are not in our classrooms,
21
81258
3309
Nëse fëmijët tanë nuk janë nëpër klasa,
01:36
how will they learn?
22
84591
1346
si do mund të mësojnë?
01:38
And if they're not learning,
23
86731
1774
Dhe nëse nuk mësojnë,
01:40
where would they end up?
24
88529
1702
ku do të përfundonin?
01:43
It was evident when I would
ask my 13-year-old,
25
91402
4970
Kjo dukej qartë kur pyesja
njërin nga 13 vjeçarët,
01:48
"Young man,
26
96396
1261
"Djalosh,
01:49
where do you see yourself in five years?"
27
97681
3337
ku e sheh vetën pas pesë vitesh?"
01:53
And his response:
28
101663
1659
Dhe përgjigjia e tij:
01:55
"I don't know if I'm gonna
live that long."
29
103691
2221
"Nuk e di nëse do jetoj aq gjatë."
01:58
Or to have a young woman say to me
30
106971
2876
Ose të më thotë një vajzë e re
se ëndrra e jetës së saj
ishte të punonte në restorant fast-food.
02:03
that she had a lifelong goal
of working in a fast-food restaurant.
31
111252
4980
02:08
To me, this was unacceptable.
32
116800
2169
Për mua kjo ishte e papranueshme.
02:11
It was also evident that they had no idea
33
119862
3237
Gjithashtu ishte e dukshme
që ata nuk ia kishin idenë fare
02:15
that there was a landscape of opportunity
34
123123
2145
për botën plot mundësi
02:17
that existed beyond their neighborhood.
35
125292
2748
që ekzistonte përtej lagjes së tyre.
02:21
We call our students "scholars,"
because they're lifelong learners.
36
129055
4744
Ne i thërrasim studentët tanë "studiues,"
ngase ata janë nxënës të përjetshëm.
02:26
And the skills that they learn today
37
134597

Aftësitë që ata marrin këtu
do t'ju shërbejnë për fakultet

05:45
and even use their own money

gjithashtu ndonjëherë duke shtuar para

when we do not have it.
93

atëherë kur ne nuk i kemi.
05:53
And as the principal,

Dhe unë, si drejtoreshë,
05:55
I have to inspect what I expect.
95
343676

duhet të kontrolloj pritjet e mia.
05:59
So I show up in classes

Kështu, unë shfaqem nëpër klasa
06:01
and I conduct observations
to give feedback,
97
