ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Titus Kaphar - Artist
Titus Kaphar's artworks interact with the history of art by appropriating its styles and mediums.

Why you should listen

As Titus Kaphar says of his work: "I’ve always been fascinated by history: art history, American history, world history, individual history -- how history is written, recorded, distorted, exploited, reimagined and understood. In my work I explore the materiality of reconstructive history. I paint and I sculpt, often borrowing from the historical canon, and then alter the work in some way. I cut, crumple, shroud, shred, stitch, tar, twist, bind, erase, break, tear and turn the paintings and sculptures I create, reconfiguring them into works that nod to hidden narratives and begin to reveal unspoken truths about the nature of history."

Kaphar is founder/CEO of the NXTHVN, a multidisciplinary arts incubator that's being built to train professional artists and to further establish New Haven's growing creative community. His latest works are an investigation into the highest and lowest forms of recording history. From monuments to mug shots, this body of work exhibited at Jack Shainman gallery December-January 2017 seeks to collapse the line of American history to inhabit a fixed point in the present. Historical portraiture, mug shots, and YouTube stills challenge viewers to consider how we document the past, and what we have erased. Rather than explore guilt or innocence, Kaphar engages the narratives of individuals and how we as a society manage and define them over time. As a whole, this exhibition explores the power of rewritten histories to question the presumption of innocence and the mythology of the heroic.

Titus Kaphar: Can art amend history?

Titus Kaphar: Kan konst förändra historia?

Filmed:

There was so much historyhistoria

Det finns så mycket historia att gå igenom

is there a way for us

02:00
Now, I didn't growväxa up going to museumsmuseer.

Jag besökte inga museum när jag var liten.
02:05
That's not my historyhistoria.
38

Det är inte min historia.
02:07
My mothermor was 15 yearsår oldgammal

39

2176
Min mamma var 15 när jag föddes.
02:09
She is amazingfantastiskt.
40

Hon är fantastisk.
02:12
My fatherfar was strugglingkämpar

41

2336
Min pappa kämpade med egna problem
02:14
for mostmest of my life.
42

i större delen av mitt liv.
02:17
If you really want to know the truthsanning,
43
125840
2016
Om du vill veta sanningen,
så upptäckte jag konst
på grund av en kvinna.
02:19
the only reasonanledning I got into artkonst
is because of a womankvinna.
44
127880
2800
02:23
There was this amazingfantastiskt, amazingfantastiskt,
fantasticfantastisk, beautifulvacker, smartsmart womankvinna,
45
131960
4856
En fantastisk, vacker, smart kvinna
02:28
fourfyra yearsår olderäldre than me,
46
136840
1336
fyra år äldre än mig,
02:30
and I wanted to go out with her.
47
138200
1816
som jag ville gå ut med.
02:32
But she said, "You're too youngung
48
140040
1496
Men hon sa, "Du är för ung
02:33
and you're not thinkingtänkande
about your futureframtida."
49
141560
2216
och tänker inte på din framtid."
02:35
So I ransprang on down to the juniorJunior collegehögskola,
50
143800
3656
Så jag sprang till närmsta junior college,
02:39
registeredregistrerade for some classesklasser,
51
147480
2176
skrev upp mig på några kurser,
02:41
ransprang on back,
52
149680
1656
sprang tillbaks,
02:43
and basicallyi grund och botten was like,
"I'm thinkingtänkande about my futureframtida now."
53
151360
2816
och sa i stort sett,
"Jag tänker på min framtid nu."
(Skratt)
02:46
(LaughterSkratt)
54
154200
2416
02:48
"Can we go out?"
55
156640
1320
"Vill du gå ut med mig?"
02:51
For the recordspela in, she's even more amazingfantastiskt.
56
159080
2416
Hon är för övrigt helt fantastisk.
02:53
I marriedgift her.
57
161520
1216
Vi gifte oss.
02:54
(ApplauseApplåder)
58
162760
4760
(Applåder)
03:00
So when I randomlyslumpvis ransprang down
to the juniorJunior collegehögskola
59
168360
4656
När jag på måfå sprang till junior college
03:05
and registeredregistrerade for classesklasser,
60
173040
1376
och valde kurser,
03:06
I really wasn'tvar inte payingbetalande attentionuppmärksamhet
to what I was registeringregistrera to.
61
174440
3696
så uppmärksammade jag inte
vad jag hade valt.
03:10
(LaughterSkratt)
62
178160
1256
(Skratt)
03:11
So I endedslutade up with an artkonst historyhistoria classklass,
63
179440
2736
Jag hamnade på en kurs om konsthistoria,
03:14
and I didn't know a thing
about artkonst historyhistoria.
64
182200
2240
och jag kunde inget om konsthistoria.
03:17
But something amazingfantastiskt happenedhände
when I wentåkte into that classklass.
65
185440
3640
Men något fantastiskt hände
när jag steg in i klassrummet.
03:21
For the first time in my academicakademisk careerkarriär,
66
189680
3816
För första gången
i min akademiska karriär
03:25
my visualvisuell intelligenceintelligens was requirednödvändig of me.
67
193520
3376
krävdes visuell intelligens.
03:28
For the first time.
68
196920
1616
För första gången.
03:30
The professorprofessor would put up an imagebild,
69
198560
2056
Professorn visade en bild,
03:32
bolddjärv strokesstroke of bluesBlues and yellowsgula,
and say, "Who'sSom that?"
70
200640
4136
djärva penseldrag i blått och gult,
och sa, "Vem är det här?"
03:36
And I'd go, "That's VanVan GoghGogh.
ClearlyKlart that is VanVan GoghGogh.
71
204800
2896
Jag svarade, "Van Gogh. Jag kan det här."
03:39
I got this."
72
207720
1576
03:41
(LaughterSkratt)
73
209320
1936
(Skratt)
03:43
I got a B in that classklass.
74
211280
2936
Jag fick ett B i den kursen.
03:46
For me, that was amazingfantastiskt.
75
214240
3240
För mig så var det otroligt.
03:50
In highhög schoolskola, let's just say
I wasn'tvar inte a great studentstuderande. OK?
76
218360
4296
Jag var inte precis
den bästa eleven i gymnasiet.
03:54
In highhög schoolskola, my GPAGPA was .65.
77
222680
2416
0,65 var mitt medelbetyg.
03:57
(LaughterSkratt)
78
225120
1496
(Skratt)
03:58
DecimalDecimal pointpunkt first, sixsex fivefem.
79
226640
4296
Noll, komma, sex, fem.
04:02
So me getting a B was hugeenorm, hugeenorm,
80
230960
4136
Att jag fick ett B var stort.
04:07
absolutelyabsolut hugeenorm.
81
235120
1736
Enormt.
04:08
And because of the factfaktum that I realizedinsåg
that I was ablestånd to learnlära sig things visuallyvisuellt
82
236880
4936
När jag insåg att jag kunde
lära in visuellt
04:13
that I couldn'tkunde inte learnlära sig in other wayssätt,
83
241840
1736
saker jag annars inte förstod,
04:15
this becameblev my strategystrategi,
this becameblev my tactictaktik
84
243600
2856
så blev det min strategi
04:18
for understandingförståelse everything elseannan.
85
246480
1880
för att förstå allt.
04:21
I wanted to staystanna kvar in this relationshiprelation.
Things were going well.
86
249760
2936
Jag ville stanna kvar i förhållandet.
Jag fortsatte att läsa konsthistoria.
04:24
I decidedbestämt, let me keep takingtar
these artkonst historyhistoria classesklasser.
87
252720
2656
Jag glömmer inte en av de sista kurserna.
04:27
One of the last artkonst historyhistoria classesklasser,
I will not forgetglömma, I will never forgetglömma.
88
255400
3576
Det var en översiktskurs.
04:31
It was one of those surveyundersökning

89

2216
Har ni tagit en översiktskurs
där de försöker
04:33

04:47
It doesn't really work,
but they try anywayi alla fall.
95
275760
3280
Det går inte, ändå försöker de.
04:51
Well, at the beginningbörjan of the semesterplaneringsterminen,
96
279680
2496
I början av terminen
04:54
I lookedtittade at the bookbok,
97
282200
1216
så tittade jag i boken.
04:55
and in this 400-page-sida bookbok
was about a 14-page-sida sectionsektion
98
283440
3936
I denna 400-sidorsbok
fanns det ett 14-sidorsavsnitt
04:59
that was on blacksvart people in paintingmålning.
99
287400
2096
om svarta inom målarkonsten.
05:01
Now, this was a crammedproppfull in sectionsektion
100
289520
2016
Det var ett fullproppat avsnitt
05:03
that had representationsrepresentationer
of blacksvart people in paintingmålning

05:10
It was poorlydåligt curatedcurator,
let's just put it that way.
103

05:16
NonethelessÄndå I was really excitedupphetsad about it,
105
304280
3336
Men jag var exalterad,
05:19
because in all
the other classesklasser that I had,
106
307640
2296
eftersom i alla andra kurser jag tagit
05:21
we didn't even have that conversationkonversation.
107
309960
2640
togs det här inte ens upp.
05:25
We didn't talk about it at all.
108
313120
1480
Vi pratade inte om det.
05:27
So imaginetänka my surpriseöverraskning
109

Fatta min förvåning
05:29
when I get to classklass
110

och på dagen vi ska gå igenom den delen,
05:35
my professorprofessor announcesmeddelar,

Det här kapitlet är viktigt för mig.
05:49
Are we going to go over it at any pointpunkt?"

120
343560
1736
Författaren tycker
att detta har betydelse.
05:57
ClearlyKlart the authorförfattare thinkstänker
that this is significantsignifikant.
121
345320
2416
Varför skippar vi det?"
05:59
Why are we skippinghoppa över over this?"
122

"Titus, jag har inte tid med det här."
06:01

123

124
351360
2256
06:05
When can we talk,

06:09
I wentåkte to her officekontor hourstimmar.
127

Jag gick dit på kontorstid.
06:11
I endedslutade up getting kickedsparkas
out of her officekontor.
128
359800
2536
Jag blev utsparkad från hennes kontor.
06:14
I wentåkte to the deanDean.
129
362360
1496
Jag gick till dekanus som sa,
06:15
The deanDean finallytill sist told me,
"I can't forcetvinga her to teachlära anything."
130
363880
3056
"Jag kan inte tvinga henne
att lära ut något."
06:18
And I knewvisste in that momentögonblick
if I wanted to understandförstå this historyhistoria,
131
366960
4056
Och jag förstod att
om jag ville förstå historien,
06:23
if I wanted to understandförstå the rolesroller
of those folksfolk who had to walk,
132
371040
4416
om jag ville förstå vilka roller
de som tvingades gå hade
06:27
