ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Elizabeth Gilbert - Writer
The author of 'Eat, Pray, Love,' Elizabeth Gilbert has thought long and hard about some big topics. Her fascinations: genius, creativity and how we get in our own way when it comes to both.

Why you should listen

Elizabeth Gilbert faced down a premidlife crisis by doing what we all secretly dream of -- running off for a year. Her travels through Italy, India and Indonesia resulted in the megabestselling and deeply beloved memoir Eat, Pray, Love, about her process of finding herself by leaving home.

She's a longtime magazine writer -- covering music and politics for Spin and GQ -- as well as a novelist and short-story writer. Her books include the story collection Pilgrims, the novel Stern Men (about lobster fishermen in Maine) and a biography of the woodsman Eustace Conway, called The Last American Man. Her work has been the basis for two movies so far (Coyote Ugly, based on her own tale of working at the famously raunchy bar in New York City), and Eat, Pray, Love, with the part of Gilbert played by Julia Roberts. Not bad for a year off.

In 2010, Elizabeth published Committed, a memoir exploring her ambivalent feelings about the institution of marriage. And her 2013 novel, The Signature of All Things, is "a sprawling tale of 19th century botanical exploration."

Gilbert also owns and runs the import shop Two Buttons in Frenchtown, New Jersey.

Elizabeth Gilbert: Your elusive creative genius

10:18
who'squi és now in her 90s, but she's been a poetpoeta her entiretot life
190
605246
2835
10:20
and she told me that when she was growingcreixent up in ruralrural VirginiaVirginia,
191
608081
3230
10:24
she would be out workingtreball in the fieldscamps,
192
611311
1601
treballava al camp,
10:25
and she said she would feel and hearescoltar a poempoema
193
612912
3157
i deia que podia tocar i sentir un poema
10:28
comingarribant at her from over the landscapepaisatge.
194
616069
2007
10:30
And she said it was like a thunderouseixordador traintren of airaire.
195
618076
3157
10:34
And it would come barrelingdisparava down at her over the landscapepaisatge.
196
621233
2328
10:36
And she feltsentia it comingarribant, because it would shakesacsejar the earthterra undersota her feetpeus.
197
623561
3602
10:39
She knewsabia that she had only one thing to do at that pointpunt,
198
627163
3099
10:43
and that was to, in her wordsparaules, "runcorrer like hellinfern."
199
630262
2151
10:45
And she would runcorrer like hellinfern to the housecasa
200
632413
1732
10:46
and she would be gettingaconseguint chasedperseguit by this poempoema,
201
634145
1686
i la perseguia el poema,
10:48
and the wholetot dealacord was that she had to get to a piecepeça of paperpaper and a pencilllapis
202
635831
3130
i ella havia d'afagar un paper i un bolígraf
10:51
fastràpid enoughsuficient so that when it thunderedtronat througha través her, she could collectrecollir it
203
638961
3068
10:54
and grabagafar it on the pagepàgina.
204
642029
1501
i l'atrapara en el paper.
10:56
And other timestemps she wouldn'tno ho faria be fastràpid enoughsuficient,
205
643530
1955
I altres vegades no era bastant ràpida,
10:58
so she'della ho faria be runningcorrent and runningcorrent and runningcorrent, and she wouldn'tno ho faria get to the housecasa
206
645485
3327
de manera que corria i corria i corria, i no arribava a la casa
11:01
and the poempoema would barrelbarril througha través her and she would misssenyoreta it
207
648812
2838
i el poema la travessava ràpidament i se li escapava
11:04
and she said it would continuecontinueu on acrossa través de the landscapepaisatge,
208
651650
2288
11:06
looking, as she put it "for anotherun altre poetpoeta."
209
653938
2964
buscant, com deia ella, "un atre poeta".
11:09
And then there were these timestemps --
210
656902
2370
I també hi havia vegades
11:12
this is the piecepeça I never forgotoblidat --
211
659272
2379
--mai no oblidaré aquesta part--,
11:14
she said that there were momentsmoments where she would almostgairebé misssenyoreta it, right?
212
661651
3199
hi havia vegades que quasi el perdia.
11:17
So, she's runningcorrent to the housecasa and she's looking for the paperpaper
213
664850
2351
11:20
and the poempoema passespassa througha través her,
214
667201
2100
i el poema la travessava
11:22
and she grabsagafa a pencilllapis just as it's going througha través her,
215
669301
2934
i agafava un bolígraf just quan l'estava travessant
11:25
and then she said, it was like she would reacharribar out with her other hand
216
672235
2568
i diu que llavors allargava l'altre braç
11:27
and she would catchatrapar it.
217
674803
1707
i l'atrapava.
11:29
She would catchatrapar the poempoema by its tailcua,
218
676510
2281
Agafava el poema per la cua
11:31
and she would pulltirar it backwardscap enrere into her bodycos
219
678791
2778
11:34
as she was transcribingtranscripció on the pagepàgina.
220
681569
1860
mentre transcrivia en la pàgina.
11:36
And in these instancesinstàncies, the poempoema would come up on the pagepàgina perfectperfecte and intactintacta
221
683429
4855
I en aquests moments, el poema apareixia en la pàgina perfecte i intacte,
11:41
but backwardscap enrere, from the last wordparaula to the first.
222
688284
3405

11:44
(LaughterRiure)
223
691689

(Riuen)
11:46
So when I heardescoltat that I was like -- that's uncannyestranya,
