ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Marjan van Aubel - Solar designer
Marjan van Aubel promotes extreme energy efficiency through intelligent design.

Why you should listen

Marjan van Aubel is an award-winning solar designer whose innovative practice spans the fields of sustainability, design and technology. In collaboration with scientists, engineers and institutions -- such as Swarovski and ECN.TNO, the Dutch Energy Centre -- van Aubel works to promote extreme energy efficiency through intelligent design. From working with expandable materials to domestically integrating solar cells that mimic the process of photosynthesis in plants, she adds a double function to objects and puts them to work: a table is not just a table, but also a producer of electricity.

Van Aubel strives to redefine our current relationship with solar technology and accelerate its transition to ubiquity. Graduating from the Royal College of Art in 2012 and the Rietveld Academy DesignLAB in 2009, she has since exhibited at world-class institutions, including the V&A (London), the Design Museum (London) and the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam). Her work is also part of the permanent collection at the MoMA in New York, the Vitra Design Museum, Boijmans van Beuningen Museum, The Montreal Museum of Art and the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia.

Like I said, I'm a designerprogettista

Come dicevo, sono una designer
02:32

things throughattraverso designdesign.
40
140542

e vorrei cambiare le cose
attraverso il design.
02:36
Let me give you some examplesesempi of my work.
41
144458
2726
Lasciate che vi dia
degli esempi del mio lavoro.
02:39
I'm collaboratingcollaborando with SwarovskiSwarovski,
the crystalcristallo companyazienda.
42
147208
3435
Collaboro con Swarovski,
la compagnia di cristalli.
02:42
And if you cuttagliare crystalscristalli in a certaincerto way,
43
150667
2351
Se si tagliano i cristalli
in un certo modo,
02:45
you are ablecapace to bendpiegare and directdiretto the lightleggero
ontosu a certaincerto placeposto.
44
153042
4226
si possono orientare per dirigere la luce
in un determinato punto.
02:49
So I use these crystalscristalli
to focusmessa a fuoco the lightleggero ontosu a solarsolare panelpannello,
45
157292
3976
Quindi uso questi cristalli
per puntare la luce sui pannelli solari,
02:53
makingfabbricazione them more efficientefficiente,
but usingutilizzando aestheticsestetica.
46
161292
2791
rendendoli più efficienti,
con l'uso dell'estetica.
02:57
So you take the solarsolare crystalcristallo
with you in the lightleggero,
47
165125
2476
Quindi tenete il cristallo solare
con voi alla luce,
c'è una batteria nella cella solare,
02:59
there's a batterybatteria in the solarsolare cellcellula,
48
167625
2101
03:01
you put it in a dockingdocking station stationstazione
49
169750
1726
lo mettete su una base
03:03
and you are ablecapace to powerenergia
these chandeliersLampadari.
50
171500
2393
e riuscirete a dare energia
a questi lampadari.
03:05
So you're literallyletteralmente
bringingportando the lightleggero indoorsal chiuso.
51
173917
2416
Quindi letteralmente porterete
la luce al chiuso.
03:10
I got completelycompletamente hookedadunco on solarsolare
when I cameè venuto acrossattraverso this technologytecnologia
52
178500
3518
Sono stata catturata dal solare dopo
essermi imbattuta in questa tecnologia
03:14
calledchiamato dye-sensitizeddye-sensitized solarsolare cellscellule,
53
182042
3226
chiamata celle solari
a pigmenti fotosensibili,
celle solari colorate,
03:17
coloredcolorato solarsolare cellscellule,
54
185292
1267
basate sulla fotosintesi delle piante.
03:18
and they are basedbasato
on photosynthesisfotosintesi in plantspiante.
55
186583
3125
03:22
Where the greenverde chlorophylclorofilla
convertsConverte lightleggero into sugarzucchero for plantspiante,
56
190667
3392
Come la clorofilla verde converte
la luce in zucchero per le piante,
03:26
these cellscellule convertconvertire lightleggero
into electricityelettricità.
57
194083
2584
così queste celle convertono
la luce in elettricità.
03:31
The bestmigliore thing is, they even work indoorsal chiuso.
58
199042
2791
La cosa bella è che
funzionano persino al chiuso.
03:34
So differentdiverso colorscolori
have differentdiverso efficiencyefficienza,
59
202792
2184
Ogni colore ha un'efficienza diversa,
03:37
dependingdipendente on theirloro placeposto
on the colorcolore spectrumspettro.
60
205000
2191
in base al punto sullo spettro dei colori.
03:39
So, for exampleesempio,
redrosso is more efficientefficiente than blueblu.
61
207215
3917
Ad esempio, il rosso
è molto più efficiente del blu.
03:44
So if I hearsentire this as a designerprogettista:
62
212708
1976
Da designer sento dire:
03:46
a coloredcolorato surfacesuperficie,
a glassbicchiere coloredcolorato surfacesuperficie,
63
214708
3018
una superficie colorata,
una superficie di vetro colorato,
03:49
colorcolore that's mostlysoprattutto
just used for estheticsEstetica,
64
217750
2684
il colore che normalmente
è usato solo per estetica,
03:52
now getsprende an extraextra functionfunzione
and is ablecapace to harvestraccolto electricityelettricità,
65
220458
4393
ora acquista una funzione in più
ed è in grado di raccogliere elettricità.
03:56
I think, where can we applyapplicare this, then?
66
224875
3184
Quindi penso, dove possiamo applicarlo?
04:00
This is CurrentCorrente Tabletavolo,
67
228083
1768
Questo è il "Tavolo Corrente",
04:01
where the wholetotale tabletoptavolo
consistsconsiste of these coloredcolorato solarsolare cellscellule.
68
229875
3750
in cui tutta la superficie è fatta di
queste celle solari colorate.
Le batterie sono nelle gambe
04:06
There are batteriesbatterie in the legsgambe
69
234667
1684
04:08
where you can chargecarica your phoneTelefono
throughattraverso USBUSB portsporte.
70
236375
2958
dove si può ricaricare il cellulare
tramite porte USB.
04:13
And in my work,
it's always very importantimportante,
71
241000
2059
Nel mio lavoro è sempre molto importante,
l'equilibrio tra efficienza ed estetica.
04:15
the balanceequilibrio betweenfra
efficiencyefficienza and aestheticsestetica.
72
243083
2310
04:17
So that's why the tabletavolo is orangearancia,
73
245417
1620
Ecco perché il tavolo è arancione,
04:19
because it is a very stablestabile
colorcolore for indoorsal chiuso.
74
247061
2916
perché è un colore
molto equilibrato per gli interni.
04:24
And this is always
the mostmaggior parte askedchiesto questiondomanda I get:
75
252042
2351
La domanda più frequente
che mi pongono è questa:
04:26
"OK, great, but how manymolti phonestelefoni
can I chargecarica from this, then?"
76
254417
2916
"Bello, ma quanti telefoni
posso ricaricare da qui?"
04:30
And before I go to this
complicatedcomplicato answerrisposta of like,
77
258500
2434
E prima di dare
una risposta complicata del tipo:
04:32
"Well, where is the tabletavolo,
does it have enoughabbastanza lightleggero,
78
260958
2518
"Dov'è il tavolo, prende abbastanza luce,
04:35
is it nextIl prossimo to a windowfinestra?"
79
263500
1559
si trova vicino alla finestra?"
Ora il tavolo ha dei sensori che rilevano
l'intensità della luce della stanza.
04:37
The tabletavolo now has sensorssensori
that readleggere the lightleggero intensityintensità of the roomcamera.
80
265083
3893
04:41
So throughattraverso an appApp we developedsviluppato
81
269000
1934
Con un'app che abbiamo sviluppato
04:42
you can literallyletteralmente followSeguire
how much lightleggero it's gettingottenere,
82
270958
2518
si può letteralmente
derivare quanta luce arriva,
04:45
and how fullpieno the batterybatteria is.
83
273500
1750
e quanto la batteria si sta ricaricando.
04:48
I'm actuallyin realtà proudorgoglioso,
because yesterdayieri we installedinstallato a tabletavolo

So the more surfacesuperficie you have,

05:28
A windowfinestra doesn't have to be

05:50
So how can you make solarsolare cellscellule

104
