notamos que as pessoas estavam se sujeitando

to regimes of quantitative measurement and self-tracking
19
51000

a regimes de medida quantitativa e auto-monitoramento
01:08

Now, we know some of the technological facts
27
71000
3000
01:29
that are driving this change in our lifestyle --
28
74000
3000
01:32
the uptake and diffusion of mobile devices,
29
77000
3000
a aceitação e a difusão de dispositivos móveis,
01:35
the exponential improvement in data storage
30
80000
2000
o progresso exponencial em armazenamento de dados

and the remarkable improvement in human biometric sensors.
32
84000
3000
e o extraordinário progresso em sensores biométricos humanos.
01:42
This little black dot there
33
87000
2000
Esse pontinho preto ali
01:44
is a 3D accelerometer.
34

It tracks your movement through space.
35
91000

01:50
It is, as you can see, very small and also very cheap.
36
95000
3000
01:53
They're now down to well under a dollar a piece,
37
98000
2000
Eles custam menos de um dólar cada,
01:55
and they're going into all kinds of devices.
38
100000
2000
01:57
But what's interesting
39
102000
2000
Mas o que é interessante
01:59
is the incredible detailed information that you can get
40
104000
3000
02:02
from just one sensor like this.
41
107000
3000
de só um sensor como este.
02:05
This kind of sensor
42
110000
2000
Este tipo de sensor
02:07
is in the hit biometric device --
43
112000
2000
está no hit do aparelho biométrico –
02:09
among early adopters at the moment -- the Fitbit.
44
114000
3000
02:12
This tracks your activity and also your sleep.
45
117000
3000
02:16
It has just that sensor in it.
46
121000
2000
Dentro só tem esse sensor.
02:18
You're probably familiar with the Nike+ system.
47
123000
2000
02:20
I just put it up because that little blue dot is the sensor.
48
125000
3000
02:24
It's really just a pressure sensor
49
129000
2000
02:26
like the kind that's in a doorbell.
50
131000
2000
como o que se usa em campainhas.
02:28
And Nike knows how to get
51
133000
2000
E Nike sabe como obter
02:30
your pace and distance from just that sensor.
52
135000
3000
02:33
This is the strap
53
138000
3000
Esta é a pulseira
02:36
that people use to transmit heart-rate data
54
141000
3000
02:39
to their Nike+ system.
55
144000
2000
para o sistema Nike+ deles.
02:41
This is a beautiful, new device
56
146000
2000
Esse é um aparelho bonito, novo,
02:43
that gives you detailed sleep tracking data,
57
148000
3000
que oferece dados detalhados do monitoramento do sono,
02:46
not just whether you're asleep or awake, but also your phase of sleep --
58
151000
3000
02:49
deep sleep, light sleep, REM sleep.
59
154000
2000
sono profundo, sono leve, sono REM [movimento rápido dos olhos].
02:51
The sensor is just a little strip of metal in that headband there.
60
156000
3000
02:54
The rest of it is the bedside console;
61
159000
3000
O resto disso é o console de cabeceira.
02:57
just for reference, this is a sleep tracking system from just a few years ago --
62
162000
3000
03:00
I mean, really until now.
63
165000
3000
Quero dizer, até agora.
03:03
And this is the sleep tracking system of today.
64
168000
2000
03:05
This just was presented
65
170000
2000
Acabou de ser apresentado
03:07
at a health care conference in D.C.
66
172000
2000
03:09
Most of what you see there is an asthma inhaler,
67
174000
3000
O que mais se vê lá é um inalador de asma,
03:12
but the top is a very small GPS transceiver,
68
177000
3000
03:15
which gives you the date and location
69
180000
3000
que fornece a data e o lugar
03:18
of an asthma incident,
70
183000
2000
de um incidente asmático,
03:20
giving you a new awareness
71
185000
2000
dando-lhe uma nova conscientização
03:22
of your vulnerability
72
187000
2000
da sua vulnerabilidade
03:24
in relation to time and environmental factors.
73
189000
3000
em relação ao tempo e fatores ambientais.
03:28
Now, we know that new tools
74
193000
3000
Bom, sabemos que essas ferramentas
03:31
are changing our sense of self in the world --
75
196000
3000
estão mudando o nosso senso do eu no mundo –
03:35
these tiny sensors that gather data in nature,
76
200000
3000
03:38
the ubiquitous computing
77
203000
2000
a computação ubíqua
03:40
that allows that data to be understood and used,
78
205000
3000
que permite a compreensão e o uso desses dados,
03:43
and of course the social networks
79
208000
2000
e é claro, as redes sociais
03:45
that allow people to collaborate and contribute.
80
210000
3000
que permitem as pessoas colaborar e contribuir.
03:50
But we think of these tools as pointing outward,
81
215000
3000
Mas vemos essas ferramentas apontando para fora,
03:54
as windows
82
219000
2000
como janelas,
03:56
and I'd just like to invite you to think of them
83
221000
2000
e eu gostaria que também pensassem nelas
03:58
as also turning inward
84
223000
2000
virando para dentro
04:00
and becoming mirrors.
85
225000
2000
e tornando-se espelhos.
04:02
So that when we think about using them
86
227000
2000
Assim, quando pensarmos em usá-las
04:04
to get some systematic improvement,
87
229000
2000
para obtermos alguma melhoria sistemática,
04:06
we also think about how they can be useful for self-improvement,
88
231000
3000
04:09
for self-discovery, self-awareness, self-knowledge.
89
234000
3000
para auto-descoberta, autoconsciênca e auto-conhecimento.
04:13
Here's a biometric device:
90
238000
2000
Aqui está um aparelho biométrico:
04:15
a pair of Apple Earbuds.
91
240000
2000
um par de fones de ouvido Apple.
04:17
Last year, Apple filed some patents
92
242000
2000
No ano passado, Apple apresentou umas patentes
04:19
to get blood oxygenation,
93
244000
2000
para medir a oxigenação sanguínea,
04:21
heart rate and body temperature via the Earbuds.
94
246000
3000
04:25
What is this for?
95
250000
2000
Para que é isso?
04:27
What should it be for?
96
252000
2000
Isso deveria ser para o que?
04:29
Some people will say it's for biometric security.
97
254000
2000
04:31
Some people will say it's for public health research.
98
256000
3000
04:34
Some people will say it's for avant-garde marketing research.
99
259000
3000
04:39
I'd like to tell you
100
264000
2000
Eu gostaria de dizer a vocês
04:41
that it's also for self-knowledge.
101
266000
2000
que isso também é para auto-conhecimento.
04:43
And the self isn't the only thing; it's not even most things.
102
268000
3000
E o eu não é a única coisa; nem é a maioria das coisas.
04:46
The self is just our operation center,
103
271000
3000
O eu é apenas nosso centro de operações,
04:49
our consciousness,
104
274000
3000
nossa consciência,
04:52
our moral compass.
105
277000
3000
nossa bússola moral.
04:55
So, if we want to act
106
280000
2000
Então, se quisermos agir
04:57
more effectively in the world,
107
282000
2000
mais efetivamente no mundo,
04:59
we have to get to know ourselves better.
108
284000
2000
temos que nos conhecer melhor.
05:01
Thank you.
109
286000
2000
Obrigado.
