ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Chris Jordan - Artist
Chris Jordan runs the numbers on modern American life -- making large-format, long-zoom artwork from the most mindblowing data about our stuff.

Why you should listen

Photographer Chris Jordan trains his eye on American consumption. His 2003-05 series "Intolerable Beauty" examines the hypnotic allure of the sheer amount of stuff we make and consume every day: cliffs of baled scrap, small cities of shipping containers, endless grids of mass-produced goods.

His 2005 book In Katrina's Wake: Portraits of Loss from an Unnatural Disaster is a chilling, unflinching look at the toll of the storm. And his latest series of photographs, "Running the Numbers," gives dramatic life to statistics of US consumption. Often-heard factoids like "We use 2 million plastic bottles every 5 minutes" become a chilling sea of plastic that stretches beyond our horizon.

In April 2008, Jordan traveled around the world with National Geographic as an international eco-ambassador for Earth Day 2008.

My work is about the behaviors行为 that we all engage从事 in unconsciously不知不觉,
0
0
5000
00:17
on a collective集体 level水平.
1
5000
2000
00:19
And what I mean by that, it's the behaviors行为
2
7000
2000
00:21
that we're in denial否认 about,
3
9000
1000
00:22
and the ones那些 that operate操作 below下面 the surface表面 of our daily日常 awareness意识.
4
10000
6000
00:29
And as individuals个人, we all do these things, all the time, everyday每天.
5
17000
3000
00:32
It's like when you're mean to your wife妻子
6
20000
2000
00:35
because you're mad at somebody else其他.
7
23000
1000
00:37
Or when you drink a little too much at a party派对, just out of anxiety焦虑.
8
25000
3000
00:40
Or when you overeat吃得过多 because your feelings情怀 are hurt伤害, or whatever随你.
9
28000
5000
00:46
And when we do these kind of things,
10
34000
2000
00:48
when 300 million百万 people do unconscious无意识 behaviors行为,
11
36000
4000
00:52
then it can add up to a catastrophic灾难性的 consequence后果
12
40000
3000
00:55
that nobody没有人 wants, and no one intended.
13
43000
2000
00:57
And that's what I look at with my photographic摄影 work.
14
45000
3000
01:00
This is an image图片 I just recently最近 completed完成, that is --
15
48000
4000
01:04
when you stand back at a distance距离,
16
52000
1000
01:05
it looks容貌 like some kind of neo-Gothic新哥特式, cartoon动画片 image图片
17
53000
3000
01:08
of a factory spewing喷涌 out pollution污染.
18
56000
3000
01:11
And as you get a little bit closer接近,
19
59000
2000
01:14
it starts启动 looking like lots of pipes管道, like maybe a chemical化学 plant,
20
62000
4000
01:18
or a refinery炼油厂, or maybe a hellish地狱般 freeway高速公路 interchange互换.
21
66000
3000
01:22
And as you get all the way up close,
22
70000
1000
01:23
you realize实现 that it's actually其实 made制作 of lots and lots of plastic塑料 cups.
23
71000
4000
01:28
And in fact事实, this is one million百万 plastic塑料 cups,
24
76000
2000
01:30
which哪一个 is the number of plastic塑料 cups that are used on airline航空公司 flights航班
25
78000
4000
01:35
in the United联合的 States状态 every一切 six hours小时.
26
83000
1000
01:36
We use four million百万 cups a day on airline航空公司 flights航班,
27
84000
4000
01:41
and virtually实质上 none没有 of them are reused重用 or recycled回收.
28
89000
2000
01:43
They just don't do that in that industry行业.
29
91000
2000
01:46
Now, that number is dwarfed所绘
30
94000
2000
01:48
by the number of paper cups we use every一切 day,
31
96000
2000
01:51
and that is 40 million百万 cups a day for hot beverages饮料,
32
99000
3000
01:54
most of which哪一个 is coffee咖啡.
33
102000
1000
01:55
I couldn't不能 fit适合 40 million百万 cups on a canvas帆布,
34
103000
3000
01:58
but I was able能够 to put 410,000. That's what 410,000 cups looks容貌 like.
35
106000
4000
02:03
That's 15 minutes分钟 of our cup杯子 consumption消费.
36
111000
1000
02:04
And if you could actually其实 stack up that many许多 cups in real真实 life,
37
112000
4000
02:08
that's the size尺寸 it would be.
38
116000
1000
02:09
And there's an hour's小时 worth价值 of our cups.
39
117000
2000
02:12
And there's a day's worth价值 of our cups.
40
120000
1000
02:13
You can still see the little people way down there.
41
121000
2000
02:15
That's as high as a 42-story-故事 building建造,
42
123000
2000
02:17
and I put the Statue雕像 of Liberty自由 in there as a scale规模 reference参考.
43
125000
4000
02:23
Speaking请讲 of justice正义, there's another另一个 phenomenon现象 going on in our culture文化
44
131000
3000
02:26
that I find deeply troubling令人不安, and that is that America美国, right now,
45
134000
3000
02:29
has the largest最大 percentage百分比 of its population人口 in prison监狱
46
137000
3000
02:32
of any country国家 on Earth地球.
47
140000
2000
02:35
One out of four people, one out of four humans人类 in prison监狱
48
143000
3000
02:38
are Americans美国人, imprisoned囚禁 in our country国家.
49
146000
4000
02:43
And I wanted to show显示 the number.
50
151000
1000
02:44
The number is 2.3 million百万 Americans美国人 were incarcerated嵌顿 in 2005.
51
152000
4000
02:48
And that's gone走了 up since以来 then, but we don't have the numbers数字 yet然而.
52
156000
2000
02:50
So, I wanted to show显示 2.3 million百万 prison监狱 uniforms制服,
53
158000
3000
02:54
and in the actual实际 print打印 of this piece,
54
162000
3000
02:57
each uniform制服 is the size尺寸 of a nickel on its edge边缘.
55
165000
3000
03:00
They're tiny. They're barely仅仅 visible可见 as a piece of material材料,
56
168000
3000
03:03
and to show显示 2.3 million百万 of them required需要 a canvas帆布
57
171000
3000
03:07
that was larger than any printer打印机 in the world世界 would print打印.
58
175000
2000
03:09
And so I had to divide划分 it up into multiple panels面板
59
177000
2000
03:11
that are 10 feet tall by 25 feet wide.
60
179000
2000
03:13
This is that piece installed安装 in a gallery画廊 in New York纽约 --
61
181000
4000
03:18
those are my parents父母 looking at the piece.
62
186000
2000
03:20
(Laughter
63
188000
2000
03:23
Every一切 time I look at this piece,
64
191000
1000
03:24
I always wonder奇迹 if my mom's妈妈的 whispering耳语 to my dad,
65
192000
2000
03:26
"He finally最后 folded折叠 his laundry洗衣店."
66
194000
2000
03:28
(Laughter

03:31
I want to show显示 you some pieces now that are about addiction.
68

03:33
And this particular特定 one is about cigarette香烟 addiction.
69
201000
4000
03:37
I wanted to make a piece that shows节目 the actual实际 number of Americans美国人
70
205000
3000
03:40
who die from cigarette香烟 smoking抽烟.
71
208000
2000
03:42
More than 400,000 people die in the United联合的 States状态 every一切 year
72
210000
3000
03:45
from smoking抽烟 cigarettes香烟.
73
213000
2000
03:47
And so, this piece is made制作 up of lots and lots of boxes盒子 of cigarettes香烟.
74
215000
4000
03:51
And, as you slowly慢慢地 step back,
75
219000
1000
03:52
you see that it's a painting绘画 by Van面包车 Gogh梵高, called "Skull头骨 with Cigarette香烟."
76
220000
4000
03:56
It's a strange奇怪 thing to think about, that on 9/11,
77
224000
4000
04:00
when that tragedy悲剧 happened发生, 3,000 Americans美国人 died死亡.

It will be something that we talk about in 100 years年份.
82
238000
3000
04:13
And yet然而 on that same相同 day, 1,100 Americans美国人 died死亡 from smoking抽烟.
83
241000
5000

84
246000
