00:52
For nearly a decade同你十年 afterwards之後,
15
40592
2214
James
00:54
Risen上升 was the subject主題

01:10
You see, under the First Amendment
21
58681
1668
01:12
the press has the right to publish發布
secret秘密 information信息 in the public公眾 interest興趣.
22
60373
3627
01:16
But it's impossible冇可能 to exercise運動 that right
if the media媒體 can't also gather收集 that news新聞
23
64024
5134
01:21
and protect保護 the identities身份

3256
01:24
who get it to them.
25
72462
1150
01:26
So when the government政府 came knocking,
26
74087
2032
01:28
Risen上升 did what many好多 brave勇敢 reporters記者
have done before him:
27
76143
3041
James
01:31
he refused拒絕
28
79208
1185
01:32
and said he'd佢會 rather go to jail監獄.
29
80417
1671
01:34
So from 2007 to 2015,
30
82611
2983
James
01:37
Risen上升 lived under the specter幽靈
of going to federal聯邦 prison監獄.
31
85618
2794
01:40
That is, until直到 just days before the trial試驗,
when a curious好奇 thing happened發生.
32
88976
4047
01:45
Suddenly突然, after years of claiming聲稱
it was vital重要 to their佢哋 case情況下,
33
93912
3801
01:49
the government政府 dropped下降 their佢哋 demands要求
to Risen上升 altogether完全.
34
97737
2690
01:52
It turns輪流 out, in the age年齡
of electronic電子 surveillance監測,
35
100912
2548
01:55
there are very few幾個 places地方
reporters記者 and sources來源 can hide隱藏.
36
103484
2888
01:58
And instead相反 of trying試圖 and failing
to have Risen上升 testify作供,
37
106959
3595
02:02
they could have his digital數字 trail線索
testify作供 against him instead相反.
38
110578
3047
Jeffrey Sterling
02:06
So completely完全 in secret秘密
and without his consent同意,
39
114585
2516
02:11
They got his email電子郵件 records記錄,
his financial金融 and banking銀行 information信息,
41
119903
4516
02:16
his credit信用 reports報告,
42
124443
1753
02:18
even travel旅行 records記錄 with a list列表
of flights航班 he had taken採取.
43
126220
2770
02:21
And it was among之間 this information信息 that
they used to convict罪犯 Jeffrey杰弗里 Sterling英鎊,
44
129808
3785
Jeffrey Sterling
45
133617
3119
02:30
Sadly可悲, this is only one case情況下 of many好多.
46
138035
2415
02:33
President總統 Obama奧巴馬 ran on a promise承諾
02:36
and instead相反, his Justice正義 Department部門
has prosecuted檢控 more
48
144783
3262
02:40
than all other administrations政府 combined聯合.
49
148069
2491
02:43
Now, you can see how this
could be a problem個問題,
50
151179
2104
02:45
especially尤其係 because the government政府
considers認為 so much of what it does secret秘密.
51
153307
4467
02:50
Since因為 9/11, virtually爭 D every important重要

02:55
has been the result結果 of a whistleblower舉報人
coming to a journalist記者.
53
163282
2920
02:58
So we risk風險 seeing看到 the press
unable冇辦法 to do their佢哋 job工作
54
166670
2898
03:01
that the First Amendment修訂
is supposed應該 to protect保護
55
169592

03:09
to circumvent規避 reporters'記者 ' rights權利,
58
177964
2707
03:12
the press can also use technology技術
59
