ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Farida Nabourema - Activist, writer
Farida Nabourema is a key voice in Togo’s pro-democracy movement.

Why you should listen

A political activist and writer, Farida Nabourema has been a fearless advocate for democracy and human rights in Togo since she was a teenager. Through more than 400 articles on her blog and other sites, she denounces corruption and dictatorship and promotes a form of progressive pan-Africanism. In 2014, she published La Pression de l'Oppression (The Pressure of Oppression), in which she discussed the different forms of oppression that people face throughout Africa and highlighted the need for oppressed people to fight back.

Nabourema is also the engagement and collaboration coordinator of Africans Rising, a pan-African movement that fights for justice, peace and dignity through grassroots organizing, civic education and advocacy. She cofounded and is the executive director of the Togolese Civil League, an NGO that promotes democracy through civil resistance. In 2001, at age 20, Nabourema founded the "Faure Must Go" movement, where she supported and organized with Togolese youths to stand against the dictatorial regime of Faure Gnassingbé. "Faure Must Go" has become the slogan for the civil resistance movement in Togo, of which Nabourema is one of the most well-known leaders.

Nabourema was awarded the "Young Advocate of the Year" and the "Female African Youth of the Year" in 2018 by Africa Youth Award for her contribution to raising awareness on the oldest military regime in Africa.

Farida Nabourema: Is your country at risk of becoming a dictatorship? Here's how to know

00:14
somebody tweeted during the midterm
elections in the United States
1
2944
4715
dikush postoi një tweet gjatë zgjedhjeve
në Shtetet e Bashkuara
00:19
that Election Day
should be made a holiday.
2
7683
2919
që Dita e Zgjedhjeve duhet të bëhet festë.
Dhe unë ia bëra retweet duke thënë:
00:22
And I retweeted, saying,
3
10626
1552
00:24
"Well, you're welcome to come
to my country and vote.
4
12202
2596
"Paj, je i mirëseardhur të vish në shtetin
tim dhe të votosh.
00:26
You'll get the whole week off
to allow the military to count it."
5
14822
3338
Do ta kesh tërë javën të lirë që ushtria
t'i numërojë votat."
Unë jam nga Togo, meqë ra fjala.
00:30
I come from Togo, by the way.
6
18742
1469
00:32
It is a beautiful country
located in West Africa.
7
20235
3272
Eshtë një shtet i bukur
në Afrikën Perëndimore.
00:35
There are some cool,
interesting facts about my country.
8
23531
3532
Ka disa fakte interesante
rreth shtetit tim.
00:39
Togo has been ruled
by the same family for 51 years,
9
27446
3164
Togo udhëhiqet
nga e njëjta familje për 51 vjet,
00:42
making us the oldest autocracy in Africa.
10
30634
3491
që na bën autokracinë më
të vjetër në Afrikë.
00:46
That's a record.
11
34149
1174
Eshtë rekord.
00:47
We have a second-coolest record:
12
35347
1594
Dhe e kemi rekordin e dytë më të mirë:
00:48
we have been ranked three times
as the unhappiest country on earth.
13
36965
4205
ne jemi rankuar tre herë si vendi më i
palumtur në botë.
00:53
You are all invited.
14
41194
1497
Të gjithë jeni të ftuar.
00:54
(Laughter)
15
42715
1747
(Të qeshura)
00:56
So just to let you know,
16
44486
1385
Kështu që vetëm ta dini,
00:57
it's not very cool
to live under an autocracy.
17
45895
3364
nuk është bukur të jetohet nën autokraci.
01:01
But the interesting thing is that I have
met, throughout the course of my activism,
18
49283
3996
Por gjëja interesante është që kam
takuar, gjatë aktivizmit tim,
kaq shumë njerëz prej vendeve të ndryshme,
01:05
so many people from different countries,
19
53303
1943
01:07
and when I tell them about Togo,
their reaction is always,
20
55270
2778
dhe kur i tregoj për Togon,
reagimi i tyre gjithnjë është,
01:10
"How can you guys allow the same people
to terrorize you for 51 years?
21
58072
4023
"Si mund t'i lejoni ju njerëzit e njëjtë
t'ju terrorizojnë 51 vite?
E di, disi, ju togolezët,
duhet të jeni shumë të durueshëm."
01:14
You know, like, you Togolese,
you must be very patient."
22
62119
2786
Ajo është mënyra e tyre diplomatike
për të thënë "budallenj".
01:16
That's their diplomatic way
of saying "stupid."
23
64929
2651
01:19
(Laughter)
24
67604
1634
(Të qeshura)
01:21
And when you live in a free country,
25
69262
3191
Dhe kur jeton në një shtet të lirë,
01:24
there's this tendency of assuming
that those who are oppressed
26
72477
3399
është tendenca të besosh
që ata që janë të shtypur
01:27
tolerate their oppression
or are comfortable with it,
27
75900
3089
e tolerojnë shtypjen e tyre
ose ndihen rehat me të,
01:31
and democracy is projected
as a progressive form of governance
28
79013
4544
dhe demokracia është projektuar
si formë progresive e qeverisjes
01:35
in such a way that those people
who don't live under democratic countries
29
83581
4280
në mënyrë të tillë që ata njerëz
që nuk jetojnë në vende demokratike
01:39
are seen as people who are not
intellectually or maybe morally
30
87885
4151
shihen sikur njerëz që, intelektualisht
ose ndoshta moralisht,
01:44
as advanced as others.
31
92060
1652
nuk janë aq të përparuar sa tjerët.
01:46
But it's not the case.
32
94140
1591
Por kjo nuk është çështja.
01:47
The reason why people have that perception
33
95755
2135
Arsyeja pse njerëzit e kanë atë mendim
01:49
has to do with the way stories
are covered about dictatorships.
34
97914
4022
ka të bëjë me lajmet që
bëhen rreth diktaturës.
01:53
In the course of my activism,
35
101960
1392
Gjatë aktivizmit tim,
01:55
I have had to interview
with so many news outlets out there,
36
103376
4402
më është dashur të bëj plote intervista
me portale të lajmeve,
01:59
and usually it would always start with,
"What got you started?
37
107802
3012
dhe zakonisht do të fillonin me:
"Cfarë të shtyu të fillosh?
02:02
What inspired you?"
38
110838
1928
Cfarë të inspiroi?"
02:04
And I reply, "I wasn't inspired.
I was triggered."
39
112790
3283
Dhe unë përgjigjem: "Nuk isha e inspiruar.
Isha e ndezur."
02:08
And it goes on.
"Well, what triggered you?"
40
116521
3161
Dhe vazhdon.
"Paj, cfarë të ndezi?"
02:11
And I go on about how my father
was arrested when I was 13, and tortured,
41
119706
4673
Dhe unë vazhdoj të tregoj si babai im
u arrestua kur isha 13 vjeç e u torturua,
02:16
all the history ... I don't want
to get into details now,
42
124403
2693
tërë historine... Nuk dua të hyj
në detaje tani,
02:19
because you'll start sleeping.
43
127120
1484
sepse do ju zërë gjumi.
02:20
But the thing is, at the end of the day,
what interests them the most is:
44
128628
3444
Por qëliimi është që, në fund të ditës,
çfarë i intereson më së shumti është:
02:24
How was he tortured?
45
132096
1170
Si e kanë torturuar?
02:25
For how many days? How many people died?
46
133290
2503
Sa ditë? Sa njerëz vdiqën?
02:27
They are interested
in the abuse, in the killing,
47
135817
4617
Ata janë të interesuar në
abuzimet, në vrasjet,
02:32
because they believe that
will gain attention and sympathy.
48
140458
4114
sepse ata besojnë që
ajo do të fitojë vëmendje dhe keqardhje.
02:36
But in reality, it serves
the purpose of the dictator.
49
144596
3332
Por në të vërtetë, kjo i shërben
qëllimit të diktatorit.
02:39
It helps them advertise their cruelty.
50
147952
3104
I ndihmon ta reklamojnë dhunën e tyre.
02:43
In 2011, I cofounded a movement
I call "Faure Must Go,"
51
151489
4375
Në 2011, unë bashkë-themelova lëvizjen
që e quaj "Faure duhet të shkojë,"
02:47
because Faure is
the first name of our president.
52
155888
2520
sepse Faure është
emri i presidentit tonë.
02:50
Togo is a French-speaking
country, by the way,
53
158432
2192
Togo është shtet frëngjisht-folës,
meqë ra fjala,
02:52
but I chose English because
I had my issues with France as well.
54
160648
3449
por unë zgjodha anglishtën sepse
kisha problemet e mia me Francën poashtu.
02:56
But then --
55
164121
1280
Por atëherë --
02:57
(Laughter)
56
165425
2592
(Të qeshura)
03:00
But then, when I started Faure Must Go,
57
168041
2990
Por atëherë, kur e nisa
Faure Duhet Të Shkojë,
03:03
I made a video, and I came on camera,
58
171055
2216
unë bëra një video, dola para kamerës,
03:05
and I said, "Well, Faure Gnassingbé,
I give you 60 days to resign as president,
59
173295
3881
dhe thashë, "Mirë, Faure Gnassingbé,
të jap 60 ditë të tërhiqesh nga presidenca,
03:09
because if you don't,
60
177200
1279
sepse nëse nuk e bën,
03:10
we the youth in Togo will organize
and we will bring you down,
61
178503
3043
ne, rinia e Togos, do të organizohemi
dhe do të të hedhim poshtë,
03:13
because you have killed
over 500 of our countrymen
62
181570
3348
sepse ti ke vrarë
mbi 500 bashkështetas tanë
03:16
to seize power when your father died.
63
184942
1800
ta mbashë fuqinë pasi ati yt vdiq.
03:18
We have not chosen you.
64
186766
1265
Ne nuk të kemi zgjedhur.
03:20
You are an imposter,
and we will remove you."
65
188055
2453
Ti je mashtrues dhe ne do të të largojmë."
Por unë isha e vetmja fytyrë e njohur
e lëvizjes.
03:22
But I was the only known face
of the movement.
66
190532
2251
03:24
Why? Because I was the only stupid one.
67
192807
2296
Pse? Sepse unë isha e vetmja e marrë.
03:27
(Laughter)
68
195127
1648
(Të qeshura)
03:29
And the backlashes followed.
69
197174
2281
Dhe reagimi filloi.
03:31
My family started receiving threats.
70
199479
2195
Familja ime filloi të merrte kërcënime.
03:33
My siblings called me one morning.
71
201698
2476
Vëllezërit dhe motrat e mia
më thirrën një mëngjes.
03:36
They said, "You know what?
72
204198
1296
Thanë, "A di cka?
03:37
When they come here to kill you,
we don't want to die with you,
73
205518
2988
Kur vijnë këtu të të vrasin,
ne nuk duam të vdesim me ty,
03:40
so move out."
74
208530
1169
kështu që largohu."
03:41
So yes, I moved out.
75
209723
1900
Kështu që unë u largova.
03:43
And I'm so angry at them,
so I haven't talked to them in five years.
76
211647
3565
Dhe po, jam e zemëruar me ta,
dhe nuk i kam folur prej 5 vjetësh.
03:47
Anyway, moving forward ...
77
215236
2873
Nejse, vazhdojmë...
03:50
For the past nine years,
I have been working with countries
78
218133
6130
Gjatë nëntë viteve të fundit,
unë kam punuar me shtete
03:56
to raise awareness of Togo,
79
224287
2371
qe ta rris vetëdijen për Togon,
03:58
to help the people of Togo
overcome their fear
80
226682
2165
t'i ndihmoj njërëzit e Togot
ta tejkalojnë frikën e tyre
04:00
so they, too, can come and say
they want change.
81
228871
3057
që ata gjithashtu të dalin e të thonë
që duan ndryshim.
04:04
I have received a lot of persecution
82
232476
3259
Unë jam persekutuar e keqtrajtuar shumë
04:07
that I cannot disclose,
83
235759
1476
që nuk mund ta tregoj,
04:09
a lot of threats, a lot of abuse,
84
237259
2227
shumë kërcënime, shumë abuzime,
04:11
psychologically.
85
239510
1486
psikologjisht.
04:13
But I don't like talking about them,
86
241020
1816
Por mua nuk më pëlqen të flas për to,
04:14
because I know that my job
as an activist is to mobilize,
87
242860
3931
sepse e di që puna ime si
aktiviste është të mobilizoj,
04:18
is to organize,
88
246815
1254
të organizoj,
04:20
is to help every single Togolese citizen
understand that, as citizens,
89
248093
5402
ta ndihmoj cdonjërin qytetar togolas
të kuptojë që, si qytetarë,
04:25
we hold the power,
90
253519
1190
ne kemi fuqinë,
04:26
we are the boss and we decide.
91
254733
1749
ne jemi shefi dhe ne vendosim.
04:28
And the punishment that the dictators
are using to intimidate them
92
256506
4788
Dhe ndëshkimet që diktatorët
përdorin për të na frikësuar
04:33
must not prevent us
from getting what we want.
93
261318
3264
nuk duhet të na ndalin
për të arritur atë që duam.
04:37
That is why I said it is very important
to cover the stories of activists
94
265439
5630
Për këtë arsye thashë që është e rëndësishme
të trajtohen ngjarjet e aktivistëve
04:43
in the way that it helps mobilize people,
95
271093
2435
në mënyrë që ta ndihmojë
mobilizimin e njerëzve,
04:45
not in the way that it helps
deter their action
96
273552
3174
jo në mënyrë që ndihmon frenimin
e veprimit të tyre
04:48
and force even more their subjugation
to the oppressive system.
97
276750
4887
dhe t'i shtyjë më thellë drejt nënshtrimit
ndaj sistemit shtypës.
Gjatë këtyre viteve
që unë kam qenë aktiviste,
04:54
During these years
that I've been an activist,
98
282808
2171
ka pasur ditë kur kam dashur të dorëzohem
sepse nuk mund të duroja më.
04:57
there are days that I felt like quitting
because I couldn't take it.
99
285003
3247
05:00
Well then, what kept me going?
100
288274
1620
Po atëherë, cfarë më mbante?
05:01
The one thing that kept me going:
101
289918
2034
Gjëja e vetme që më mbante ishte:
05:03
I remember the story of my grandfather,
102
291976
1872
më kujtohej ngjarja e gjyshit tim,
05:05
and how he used to walk
465 miles from his village to the city,
103
293872
5567
dhe si ai ecte 748 km
nga fshati i tij në qytet,
05:11
just to protest for independence.
104
299463
2018
vetëm të protestojë për pavarësi.
05:13
Then I remember
the sacrifice of my father,
105
301505
2308
Pastaj më kujtohet sakrifica e babait tim,
05:15
who was tortured so many times
106
303837
2135
që është torturuar aq herë
05:17
for daring to protest against the regime.
107
305996
3696
për shkak të guximit të protestojë kundër regjimit.
05:21
Back in the '70s,
they would write pamphlets
108
309716
2531
Në vitet 70të, ata shkruanin pamflete
05:24
to raise awareness on the dictatorship,
109
312271
2797
të zgjonin vetëdijen mbi diktaturën,
05:27
and because they couldn't
afford to make copies,
110
315092
2556
dhe sepse nuk ishin në gjendje
financiare të bënin kopje,
05:29
they would reproduce
the same pamphlet 500 times each
111
317672
3752
ato do të riprodhonin
pamfletat e njëjta 500 herë secilën
05:33
and distribute them.
112
321448
1470
dhe i shpërndanin.
05:34
It got to a point where the military
knew their handwriting,
113
322942
2893
Erdhi deri në atë pikë që ushtria
ia dinte shkrimin,
kështu që sa herë i binte ndonjëra në dorë,
shkonin dhe i merrnin.
05:37
so as soon as they stumbled upon one,
they'd go and get them.
114
325859
2936
05:40
But I look at that and I'm like,
you know, today you have a blog.
115
328819
4139
Por mua më kujtohet ajo dhe,
e di, sot ka blogje.
05:44
I don't have to copy
the same thing 500 times.
116
332982
3053
S'kam nevojë ta kopjoj
të njëjtën gjë 500 herë.
05:48
I blog and thousands of people read it.
117
336059
2669
Unë blogoj dhe mijëra njerëz e lexojnë.
05:50
By the way, in Togo, they like
calling me the WhatsApp girl,
118
338752
2912
Meqë ra fjala, në Togo, ata më quajnë
vajza e WhatsApp-it,
05:53
because I am always on WhatsApp
attacking the government.
119
341688
2751
sepse gjithmonë jam në WhatsApp
duke e sulmuar qeverinë.
05:56
(Laughter)
120
344463
1150
(Të qeshura)
Kështu që është shumë më e lehtë.
05:57
So it's much easier.
121
345637
1176
05:58
When I'm angry at the government,
I just make an angry note,
122
346837
3191
Kur jam e zemëruar me qeverinë,
unë thjesht e bëj një njoftim të zemëruar,
06:02
and I send it out
and thousands of people share it.
123
350052
3008
dhe e dërgoj dhe mijëra njerëz e lexojnë.
06:05
I'm rarely this composed.
I'm always angry, by the way.
124
353084
3499
Rrallë jam kaq e përmbajtur.
Gjithmonë jam e zemëruar, meqë ra fjala.
06:08
(Laughter)
125
356607
3046
(Të qeshura)
06:11
(Applause)
126
359677
4372
(Duartrokitje)
06:20
So I was talking about the necessity
to showcase our stories,
127
368247
4539
Doja të flisja rreth domosdoshmërisë
që të tregohen ngjarjet tona,
06:24
because when I think about
the sacrifices that were made for us,
128
372810
3174
sepse kur mendoj për
sakrificat që janë bërë për ne,
06:28
it helped me keep going.
129
376008
1647
më ndihmon të vazhdoj.
Njëri prej veprimeve të para
të lëvizjes tonë Faure Duhet Të Shkojë
06:29
One of the very first actions
of our Faure Must Go movement
130
377679
2821
06:32
was to come up with a petition,
asking citizens to sign
131
380524
3387
ishte të nisim një peticion.
I kërkuam qytetarëve ta nënshkruajnë
06:35
so that we can demand new elections,
as the constitution allows.
132
383935
4106
që të mund të kërkojmë zgjedhje,
si lejon kushtetuta.
Njerëzit frikësoheshin
ta vendosnin emrin e tyre
06:40
People were scared to put their names
133
388065
1820
06:41
because, they said,
they don't want to get in trouble.
134
389909
2586
sepse, ata thanë,
nuk donin t'i bënin vetës probleme.
Edhe në diasporë
njerëzit ishin të frikësuar.
06:44
Even in the diaspora, people were scared.
135
392519
2006
06:46
They were like, "We have family at home."
136
394549
1992
Ata thoshin, "Ne kemi familje në shtëpi."
06:48
But there was this woman
who was in her 60s.
137
396565
2390
Por ishte një grua në të 60-tat.
06:50
When she heard about it,
she took the petition,
138
398979
3658
Kur dëgjoi për të, ajo mori peticionin,
06:54
and she went home,
139
402661
1865
shkoi shtëpi më shtëpi,
06:56
and by herself she collected
over 1,000 [signatures].
140
404550
3590
dhe vet mblodhi mbi 1,000 nënshkrime.
07:00
That inspired me so much, and I was like,
141
408164
2574
Ajo më inspiroi aq shumë dhe thashë,
07:02
if a 60-year-old that has
nothing more to gain in this regime
142
410762
4463
nëse një 60 vjecare që s'ka asgjë
më për të përfituar nga ky regjim
07:07
can do this for us, the young ones,
143
415249
1821
mund ta bëjë këtë për ne të rinjtë,
07:09
then why should I quit?
144
417094
1568
atëherë pse duhet të dorëzohem unë?
07:10
It is the stories of resistance,
the stories of defiance,
145
418686
4024
Jane ngjarjet e rezistences,
ngjarjet e kundërshtimeve,
07:14
the stories of resilience,
146
422734
2061
ngjarjet e ripërtëritjes,
07:16
that inspire people to get involved,
147
424819
2100
që inspirojnë njerëzit të përfshihen,
07:18
not the stories of abuse
and killings and hurt,
148
426943
3489
jo ngjarjet e abuzimit
dhe vrasjeve dhe dhimbjes,
07:22
because as humans, it's only natural
for us to be scared.
149
430456
3352
sepse si njerëz, është natyrale që
të frikësohemi.
07:26
I would like to share with you
a few characteristics of dictatorships
150
434268
3535
Do të doja të ndaja me ju disa
karakteristika të diktatures
07:29
so that you can assess your own country
151
437827
2634
që të mund ta vlerësoni shtetin tuaj
07:32
and see if you are also
at risk of joining us.
152
440485
3052
dhe të shihni mos jeni në rrezik
të na bashkangjiteni.
07:35
(Laughter and cheers)
153
443561
2338
(Të qeshura)
07:37
(Applause)
154
445923
4754
(Duartrokitje)
07:43
Number one thing to look at:
concentration of power.
155
451141
2526
Gjëja e pare që duhet shikuar:
koncentrimi i pushtetit.
07:45
Is the power in your country concentrated
in the hands of a few, an elite?
156
453691
3477
A është fuqia e shtetit tuaj e përqëndruar
në duart e disave, një elite?
07:49
It can be a political elite,
ideological elite.
157
457192
2632
Mund të jetë elite politike,
elite ideologjike.
07:51
And you have a strongman,
158
459848
1562
Dhe ju keni një njeri të fortë,
07:53
because we always have one guy
who is presented as the messiah
159
461434
3593
sepse ne gjithmone kemi një njeri
që prezantohet dikur profet
07:57
who will save us from the world.
160
465051
1962
që do të na shpëtoje nga kjo botë.
07:59
The second point is propaganda.
161
467037
2477
Pika e dytë është propaganda.
08:01
Dictators feed on propaganda.
162
469538
2113
Diktatorët ushqehen me propagandë.
08:03
They like giving the impression
that they are the saviors,
163
471675
2744
Atyre u pëlqen të japin përshtypjen
që ata janë shpëtimtare,
08:06
and without them,
the country will fall apart.
164
474443
2179
dhe pa ata shteti do të bjerë poshtë.
08:08
And they are always fighting
some foreign forces, you know?
165
476646
3155
Dhe ata luftojnë gjithmonë
forca të jashtme, e di?
08:11
The Christians, the Jewish, the Muslims,
166
479825
2127
Të krishteret, hebrenjtë, muslimanët,
08:13
the voodoo priests are coming for you.
167
481976
2233
priftërinjtë vudu që do vijnë për ty.
08:16
The Communists, when they get here,
we'll all be broke.
168
484233
2627
Komunistët, kur të vijnë këtu,
të gjithë do jemi trokë.
08:18
These kinds of things.
169
486884
1185
Këto lloj gjërash.
08:20
And our president, in particular,
he fights pirates.
170
488093
3203
Dhe presidenti ynë, në vecanti,
ai lufton piratët.
08:23
(Laughter)
171
491732
1179
(Të qeshura)
08:24
I am very serious.
172
492935
1173
Jam shume serioze.
Vitin e kaluar, ai bleu një anije që vlen
13 milion dollare për t'i luftuar piratet,
08:26
Last year, he bought a boat that's
13 million dollars to fight pirates,
173
494132
3813
08:29
and 60 percent of our people are starving.
174
497969
2420
dhe 60 përqind e njerëzve tanë
vdesin urie.
Kështu që ata gjithmone na mbrojne ne
nga ndonjë forcë e jashtme.
08:32
So they are always protecting us
from some foreign forces.
175
500413
2761
08:35
And this leads to point three:
militarization.
176
503198
2767
Dhe kjo na qon tek pika e tretë:
militarizimi.
08:37
Dictators survive by instigating fear,
177
505989
2940
Diktatorët mbijetojnë duke ngjallur frikë,
08:40
and they use the military
to suppress dissident voices,
178
508953
2880
dhe përdorin ushtrinë për të mposhtur
zërat disidente,
08:43
even though they try
to give the impression
179
511857
2034
edhe pse ata mundohen
ta japin përshtypjen
08:45
that the military
is to protect the nation.
180
513915
2031
që ushtria shërben
për të mbrojtur popullin.
08:47
And they suppress institutions
and destroy them
181
515970
2404
Dhe ata shtypin institucionet
dhe i shkatërrojnë
08:50
so that they don't have to be
held accountable.
182
518398
2670
që të mos marrin përgjegjësinë.
08:53
So do you have a heavily
militarized country?
183
521092
2775
A ke shtet të armatosur fort?
08:55
And this leads to point four,
what I call human cruelty.
184
523891
3533
Që na con tek pika katër,
cka unë e quaj dhunë njerëzore.
08:59
You know when we talk about animals,
185
527448
2031
E di kur flasim për kafshët,
09:01
we say animal cruelty
when animals are abused,
186
529503
2641
themi dhunë ndaj kafshëve,
kur kafshët abuzohen,
09:04
because there's no charter
acknowledged by the UN
187
532168
2982
sepse nuk ka kartë të njohur nga UN
09:07
saying animal rights charter.
188
535174
2330
të quajtur Të drejtat e kafshëve.
09:09
Point one: all animals are created equal.
So you don't have that.
189
537989
3324
Pika nje: të gjitha kafshët janë krijuar
të barabarta. Nuk e ke ate.
09:13
So whenever animals are abused,
we say animal cruelty.
190
541337
3109
Kështu që sa here abuzohen kafshët,
ne themi dhunë ndaj kafshëve.
09:16
But when it comes to humans,
we say human rights abuses,
191
544470
3421
Por kur vjen puna te njerëzit,
ne themi abuzim i të drejtave njerëzore,
09:19
because we assume
that all humans have rights.
192
547915
2466
sepse ne supozojmë
që të gjithë njerëzit kanë të drejta.
09:22
But some of us are actually still fighting
for our right to have rights.
193
550405
3617
Por disa prej nesh ende luftojmë
për të drejtën tonë për të pasur të drejta.
09:26
So in that condition, I don't talk about
human rights abuse or violation.
194
554046
4274
Në këto kushte, unë nuk flas për abuzimin
e te drejtave njerëzore, apo shkeljen e tyre.
09:30
When you live in a country
and you have an issue with the president
195
558344
3224
Kur jeton në një shtet
dhe ke problem me presidentin
dhe gjëja më e keqe që mund të ndodhë
është që ai t'ju ndalojë presidencën,
09:33
and the worst thing that can happen
is he bans you from the presidency,
196
561592
3414
09:37
you are lucky.
197
565030
1151
ti je me fat.
09:38
When you come to my country
and have an issue with the president,
198
566205
3071
Kur ti vjen në shtetin tim
dhe ke problem me presidentin,
09:41
you just run, disappear;
you vanish from the universe,
199
569300
2538
duhet të vraposh, zhdukesh;
largohesh nga gjithësia,
09:43
because they can still find you in Turkey.
200
571862
2048
sepse ata ende mund të të gjejnë
edhe në Turqi.
09:45
So people like myself,
we don't get to live in Togo anymore.
201
573934
2855
Kështu që njerëzit si unë,
nuk mund të jetojnë në Togo më.
09:48
And people like myself,
202
576813
1156
Dhe njerëzit si unë,
09:49
we don't get to live in the same place
for more than a month,
203
577993
2906
ne nuk mund të jetojmë në të njejtin
vend me shumë se një muaj,
09:52
because we don't want to be traced.
204
580923
1685
sepse nuk duam të na gjejnë.
09:54
The way they abuse people,
205
582632
1278
Mënyra sesi abuzojnë njerëzit,
09:55
the type of cruelty that happens
in all impunity under dictatorships
206
583934
3896
lloji i dhunës që ndodh
në të githa shkeljet nën diktaturë
09:59
are beyond human imagination.
207
587854
2598
janë përtej imagjinatës njerëzore.
10:02
The stories of some
of the activists that were killed,
208
590476
2627
Ngjarjet e disa aktivistëve që jane vrarë,
10:05
their bodies dumped in the sea,
209
593127
2425
trupat e tyre të hedhur në det,
10:07
that were tortured
210
595576
1438
që ishin torturuar,
10:09
to the point where they lost
their hearing or their sight --
211
597038
3275
deri në atë pikë që humbën
shikimin apo dëgjimin --
10:12
those stories still haunt me.
212
600337
1548
ato ngjarje ende më percjellin.
10:13
And sometimes, as an activist,
213
601909
2004
Dhe ndonjëherë, si aktiviste,
10:15
I am less concerned about dying
than how it will happen.
214
603937
3068
jam më pak e brengosur rreth vdekjes,
sesa si do të ndodhë.
10:19
Sometimes I just sit down
and I imagine all scenarios.
215
607029
2658
Ndonjëherë ulem dhe i mendoj
të gjithë skenarët e mundshëm.
10:21
What are they going to do?
Are they going to cut my ears first?
216
609711
2998
Cfarë do të bëjne ata?
A do të m'i presin veshët së pari?
10:24
Or are they going to cut my tongue
because I'm always insulting them?
217
612733
3382
Ose do të ma presin gjuhën
sepse gjithmonë i ofendoj?
10:28
It sounds cruel, but it is the reality.
218
616139
2031
Tingëllon e ashpër, por është realiteti.
10:30
We live in a very cruel world.
219
618194
2424
Jetojmë në një botë të dhunshme.
10:32
Dictators are cruel monsters,
220
620642
2707
Diktatorët janë perbindësha te dhunshëm,
10:35
and I am not saying it to be nice.
221
623373
2598
dhe nuk po e them të tingëllojë mirë.
10:39
So yes, that is the final characteristic.
222
627081
3396
Dhe po, kjo është karakteristika e fundit.
10:42
The list goes on,
223
630501
1305
Lista vazhdon,
10:43
but that's the final thing that I want
to share about autocracies,
224
631830
3172
por kjo është gjëja e fundit
që dua të ndaj rreth autokracive,
10:47
so that you look at your country
and see if there are risks there.
225
635026
3134
që ta shikoni shtetin tuaj
dhe të shihni a ka rreziqe aty.
10:50
It is important that you acknowledge
the gains of freedom that you have today,
226
638184
3916
Eshtë e rëndësishme t'i vëreni
përparësitë e lirisë që keni sot,
10:54
because some people had
to give their lives for you to have it.
227
642124
2996
sepse disa njerëz e kanë dhënë jetën
që ju ta keni.
10:57
So don't take this for granted.
228
645144
1861
Mos e merrni si të sigurtë.
10:59
But then at the same time,
you also need to know
229
647029
2815
Por në te njëjtën kohë,
gjithashtu duhet të dini
11:01
that no country is actually
destined to be oppressed,
230
649868
3887
që asnjë shtet nuk është i destinuar
të jetë i shtypur,
11:05
while at the same time,
231
653779
1378
kur gjatë të njëjtës kohë,
11:07
no country or no people are immune
to oppression and dictatorship.
232
655181
4620
asnje shtet nuk eshte imun ndaj shtypjes
dhe diktaturës.
11:11
Thank you.
233
659825
1213
Ju falemnderit.
11:13
