Why you should listen

Michelle Knox currently works in Finance Transformation for Westpac Banking Corporation, Sydney, Australia, leading a team to deliver superior products, services and sustainable change. In a world of constant change and disruption, Knox is passionate about helping others to adapt and thrive by identifying and supporting the unique skills and talents of individuals to create a positive work environment.

Knox is also an avid work traveler and storyteller, often combining these passions to write witty accounts of her adventures in a travel blog.

In 2017, Knox's father passed away from a progressive illness. Through this experience, Knox learned that talking about death and planning for it enabled her father to experience a good death and her family to have a healthy bereavement, something she realized not everyone achieves.

After discussing death with friends, colleagues and complete strangers, Knox realized there was a need to address the way we deal with the most significant change we will all experience: death. With humor and compassion, Knox shares her own experiences and learnings in order to help others. She is living proof that talking about death won’t kill you.

00:32
death.

a morte.
00:34
But most of us don't want

Mas a maioria de nós
não quer reconhecer a morte,
00:37
we don't want to plan for it,

não queremos nos planejar pra ela,

não queremos falar sobre ela

Cresci numa comunidade na Austrália

I grew up in an Australian community

02:50
We also discussed some of the issues
57
158834
1874
02:52
triggered by our various
cultural backgrounds,
58
160732
2562
provenientes da nossa diversidade cultural
02:55
and we realized there can be
some significant differences
59
163318

e percebemos que pode haver
diferenças significativas
02:58
in how we honor
the passing of a loved one.
60
166048
2174
na forma como honrarmos
a morte de um ente querido.
03:01
A great example of this
is "Sorry Business,"
61
169504
2707
Um ótimo exemplo disso
é o "Sorry Business",
03:04
practiced by Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander people.
62
172235
2903
praticado por aborígenes
e pelo povo ilhéu do Estreito de Torres.
03:07
During Sorry Business,
63
175895
2085
Durante o Sorry Business,
03:10
family members will take on
specific roles and responsibilities,
64
178004
3761
familiares assumem papéis
e responsabilidades específicos,
03:13
protocols such as limiting
the use of photographs,
65
181789
2841
protocolos tais como limitar
o uso de fotografias,
03:16
saying the name of the deceased,
66
184654
2333
dizer o nome do falecido
03:19
and holding a smoking ceremony
67
187011
2215
e realizar uma cerimônia de incensos,
03:21
are all a sign of respect and allow
for a peaceful transition of the spirit.
68
189250
4031
que são um sinal de respeito e permitem
uma transição tranquila para o espírito.
03:26
These customs can be a complete contrast
69
194642
1960
Esses costumes podem ser o total oposto
03:28
to those we might practice
in Western cultures,
70
196626
2468
daqueles que praticamos
na cultura ocidental,
03:31
where we would honor
the memory of a loved one
71
199118
2167
na qual honraríamos a memória
de um ente querido
03:33
by talking about them
and sharing photographs.
72
201309
2586
falando sobre ele
e compartilhando fotografias.
03:37
So my lesson from this last year is,
73
205312
2570
Minha lição do último ano foi
03:39
life would be a lot easier to live
if we talked about death now,
74
207906
5144
que a vida seria bem mais fácil
se falássemos sobre a morte
03:45
while we're healthy.
75
213074
1261
enquanto ainda temos saúde.
03:47
For most of us, we wait
until we are too emotional,
76
215066
3607
A maioria de nós espera
até ficarmos emotivos demais,
03:50
too ill
77
218697
1500
doentes demais
03:52
or too physically exhausted --
78
220221
1746
ou fisicamente cansados demais,
e aí já é tarde.
03:55
and then it's too late.
79
223269
1275
03:57
Isn't it time we started taking ownership
of our finale on this earth?
80
225933
4134
Já não está na hora de assumirmos
o controle do nosso fim nesse planeta?
04:03
So let's get going.
81
231060
1206
Então, vamos começar a agir.
04:05
Do you know what you want when you die?
82
233581
1936
Você sabe o que quer quando morrer?
04:08
Do you know how you want to be remembered?
83
236231
2291
Sabe como deseja ser lembrado?
04:10
Is location important?
84
238834
1770
Pra você, o local é importante?
04:13
Do you want to be near the ocean
85
241005
2197
Quer ficar perto do mar,
04:15
or in the ocean?
86
243226
1526
ou no mar?
04:16
(Laughter)
87
244776
1993
(Risos)
04:18
Do you want a religious service
or an informal party,
88
246793
3333
Quer um funeral religioso,
uma festa informal,
04:22
or do you want to go out with a bang,
89
250150
2469
ou quer ser arremessado, literalmente,
em fogos de artifício?
04:24
literally, in a firework?
90
252643
2350
04:27
(Laughter)
91
255017
1714
(Risos)
No que se refere à morte,
há muito o que se discutir,
04:28
When it comes to death,
there's so much to discuss,
92
256755
2396
04:31
but I want to focus on two aspects:
93
259175
2237
mas quero focar dois aspectos:
04:33
why talking about and planning your death
can help you experience a good death,
94
261436
5595
por que falar e planejar sua morte
pode te ajudar a ter uma boa morte
04:39
and then reduce the stress
on your loved ones;
95
267055
2469
e a reduzir o estresse dos que ficam;
04:41
and how talking about death can help us
support those who are grieving.
96
269548
3357
e como falar sobre a morte pode nos ajudar
a dar apoio aos enlutados.
04:45
So let's start with planning.
97
273876
1648
Vamos começar pelo planejamento.
04:48
How many of you have a will?
98
276241
1881
Quantos aqui já fizeram testamento?
04:50
Put your hand up.
99
278146
1150
Levantem a mão.
04:51
Oh, this is fantastic.
100
279898
2074
Ah, fantástico.
04:53
In Australia, 45 percent
of adults over the age of 18
101
281996
4183
Na Austrália, 45% das pessoas
com mais de 18 anos
04:58
do not have a legal will.
102
286203
1864
não possuem testamento.
05:01
You're a little bit above average.
103
289133
2674
Vocês estão um pouquinho acima da média.
05:03
This is a startling statistic
104
291831
2346
Essa é uma estatística surpreendente,
05:06
given that writing a will can actually
be quite simple and inexpensive.
105
294201
3614
já que fazer um testamento na verdade
é algo bem simples e barato.
Então, comecei a perguntar
a amigos e vizinhos
05:10
So I started asking
my friends and neighbors
106
298750
2096
05:12
and was really surprised to learn
many of them don't have a will,
107
300870
3207
e fiquei bem surpresa ao saber
que muitos deles não têm testamento
05:16
and some couples don't realize
they need individual wills.
108
304101
2927
e que alguns casais não percebem
que precisam fazer testamentos separados.
05:19
The usual explanation was, well,
it's all going to go to my partner anyway.
109
307627
3793
Em geral, a resposta era: "Bem, tudo vai
pro meu companheiro de qualquer jeito".
05:24
So keep in mind that laws vary
110
312667
1827
Saibam que as leis variam
de estado para estado e de país para país,
05:26
from state to state
and country to country,
111
314518
2817
05:29
but this is what happens
in New South Wales
112
317359
2158
mas eis o que acontece em New South Wales
05:31
if you die without leaving a legal will.
113
319541
2476
se você morrer sem ter
deixado um testamento.
05:35
Firstly, a suitable administrator
must be appointed
114
323621
3198
Primeiro, um representante legal
precisa ser designado
05:38
by the Supreme Court of New South Wales.
115
326843
2222
pela Suprema Corte de New South Wales.
05:41
Chances are this is someone
who would never have met the deceased.
116
329854
3174
É provável que seja alguém
que jamais conheceu o falecido.
05:45
That person is then responsible
for arranging your funeral,
117
333814
3411
Essa pessoa fica então responsável
por organizar o funeral,
05:49
collecting assets and distributing them
after paying debts and taxes.
118
337249
3841
reunir bens e distribuí-los
após pagar contas e impostos.
05:54
And one of those debts
will be the bill for their services.
119
342042
2984
Uma dessas contas será
a dos serviços prestados por ele.
Não se trata de alguém que saiba
05:57
This is not someone who would have known
120
345462
1905
que você queria que a girafa de madeira
de 1,2 metro da sala de estar
05:59
you want the four-foot
wooden giraffe in your living room
121
347391
2667
06:02
to go to the person who helped you
carry it halfway across the world,
122
350082
3455
ficasse com a pessoa que te ajudou
a trazê-la do outro lado do mundo.
06:05
and yes, that's in my will.
123
353561
2313
Sim, isso está no meu testamento.
06:07
(Laughter)
124
355898
1901
(Risos)
06:10
If you die leaving a spouse
or a domestic partner,
125
358251
2688
Se você morrer deixando um cônjuge
ou um companheiro,
06:12
then chances are
they will receive your estate,
126
360963
2819
provavelmente ele ficará com seus bens,
06:15
but if you are single,
it's far more complicated,
127
363806
2920
mas, se você for solteiro,
é bem mais complicado,
06:18
as parents, siblings, half-siblings
and dependents all come into play.
128
366750
4556
já que pais, irmãos, meio-irmãos
e dependentes entram no jogo.
06:24
And did you know that if you make
a regular donation to charity,
129
372101
4354
Você sabia que, se fizer doações regulares
para uma instituição de caridade,
06:28
that charity may have grounds
to make a claim on your estate?
130
376479
2915
essa instituição pode reclamar
seus bens na sua morte?
06:32
The most important thing to know
is the bigger your estate,
131
380511
3273
A coisa mais importante a saber
é que quanto mais bens você tiver,
06:35
the more complicated that will will be,
132
383808
1890
mais complicado seu testamento será
e mais caro também.
06:37
and the more expensive that bill.
133
385722
1982
06:40
So if you don't have a will, I ask you ...
134
388882
3185
Então, se você não tem
um testamento, eu te pergunto:
06:45
when else in your life
135
393406
1996
quando foi na vida
06:47
have you willingly given money
to the government
136
395426
3141
que você deu dinheiro
voluntariamente ao governo,
sem ser por obrigação?
06:50
when you didn't have to?
137
398591
1438
(Risos)
06:52

414040
2529
queria morrer cercado por sua família
07:08
and he wanted to die peacefully,
not choking or gasping for air.
144
416593
3081
e queria morrer tranquilo,
não sufocado ou com falta de ar.
07:13
And I'm pleased to say that my family
were able to support dad's wishes,
145
421008
4175
E tenho a alegria de dizer que minha
família atendeu aos desejos do meu pai.
07:17
and he achieved his goals,
146
425207
1607
Ele alcançou seus objetivos
e, nesse sentido, ele teve uma boa morte.
07:18
and in that sense, he had a good death.
147
426838
2979
07:22
He had the death he planned for.
148
430444
1762
Ele teve a morte que planejou.
07:25
Because dad wanted to die at home,
149
433538
1699
Como ele queria morrer em casa,
07:27
we had to have some
pretty tough conversations
150
435261
2144
tivemos que ter algumas
conversas bem difíceis
07:29
and fill out a lot of paperwork.
151
437429
1704
e preencher muita papelada.
07:31
The questions on the forms cover everything
from resuscitation to organ donation.
152
439853
4285
As perguntas nos formulários iam
de ressuscitação a doação de órgãos.
07:37
Dad said, "Take whatever
organs you can use."
153
445282
3111
Papai disse: "Doem todos
os órgãos que puderem".
07:41
This was upsetting to my mum,
154
449226
2063
Isso chateou minha mãe,
07:43
as my dad's health
was deteriorating rapidly,
155
451313
2425
já que a saúde do meu pai
piorou rapidamente
07:45
and it was no longer the right time
to talk about organ donation.
156
453762
3511
e não era mais hora de falar
sobre doação de órgãos.
07:50
I believe we need to discuss these issues
when we are fit and healthy,
157
458912
3286
Acho que devemos discutir essas coisas
quando ainda estamos saudáveis
07:54
so we can take the emotion out of it,
158
462222
2448
para que a emoção esteja fora da equação
07:56
and then we can learn
not just what is important,
159
464694
2778
e possamos descobrir
não apenas o que é importante,
07:59
but why it's important.
160
467496
1602
mas por que é importante.
08:02
So as part of my journey,
161
470269
2460
Como parte da minha jornada,
08:04
I started engaging my family and friends
to find out their thoughts on death,
162
472753
4524
comecei a incentivar familiares e amigos
a descobrirem o que pensavam sobre a morte
08:09
and how they wanted to be remembered.
163
477301
1817
e como queriam ser lembrados.
08:12
I discovered you can host
a "Death Over Dinner,"
164
480406
4333
Descobri que podemos dar
"Jantares sobre Morte",
08:16
or a "Death Cafe,"
165
484763
1960
ou "Café da Morte",
08:18
which is a great, casual way
to introduce the topic ...
166
486747
2760
que são formas ótimas e casuais
de abordar o assunto...
08:21
(Laughter)
167
489531
2033
(Risos)
08:23
and gain some wonderful insight.
168
491588
1754
e ter ideias incríveis.
08:25
(Laughter)
169
493366
1695
(Risos)
08:27
Did you know that your body
has to be legally disposed of,
170
495085
3659
Você sabia que seu corpo
precisa ser descartado por lei,
08:30
and you can't just be shoved off a cliff
171
498768
2564
e que não pode simplesmente
ser jogado de um penhasco
08:33
or set fire to in the backyard?
172
501356
1690
ou queimado no quintal de casa?
08:35
(Laughter)
173
503070
1233
(Risos)
08:36
In Australia, you have three options.
174
504327
1877
Na Austrália, temos três opções.
08:38
The two most common
are burial and cremation,
175
506228
2247
As duas mais comuns
são o enterro e a cremação,
08:40
but you can also donate
your body to science.
176
508499
3039
mas você também pode doar
seu corpo para uso da ciência.
08:43
And I am pleased to report
that innovation has touched
177
511562
2929
Tenho a felicidade de dizer
que a inovação chegou
08:46
the world of corpse disposal.
178
514515
1594
ao mundo do descarte de corpos.
08:48
(Laughter)
179
516133
1101
(Risos)
08:49
You can now opt for an eco-funeral.
180
517258
2056
Você pode agora ter um eco-funeral.
08:51
You can be buried at the base of a tree
181
519338
2068
Pode ser enterrado aos pés de uma árvore,
em papelão reciclado ou cesto de vime.
08:53
in recycled cardboard or a wicker basket,
182
521430
2804
08:56
and for those who love the ocean,
183
524258
1642
Para aqueles que adoram o mar,
08:57
there are eco-friendly urns
that will dissolve at sea.
184
525924
2556
há urnas ecológicas
que se dissolvem no oceano.
09:01
Personally, I plan to be cremated,
185
529448
2731
No meu caso, pretendo ser cremada,
09:04
but given that I get seasick,
186
532203
2514
mas, considerando que fico enjoada no mar,
09:06
I can think of nothing worse
187
534741
1811
não posso pensar em nada pior
09:08
than having my ashes
flung into a huge ocean swell.
188
536576
3246
do que ter minhas cinzas lançadas
no mar cheio de ondas.
Comprei até um pedacinho de terra
no jardim de rosas ao lado do meu pai.
09:12
I've actually bought a plot
in the rose garden next to my dad.
189
540735
2920
09:16
I call it my investment property.
190
544314
1953
Chamo de terreno de investimento.
09:18
(Laughter)
191
546291
2460
(Risos)
09:20
But sadly, there's no tax deduction.
192
548775
3125
Infelizmente, não há dedução de imposto.
09:23
(Laughter)
193
551924
2237
(Risos)
09:26
So if you plan for your death,
194
554185
3349
Então, se você se planejar pra sua morte,
09:29
then your survivors will know
how to experience a healthy bereavement
195
557558
4096
os que ficarem saberão
como ter um falecimento saudável,
09:33
without fear or guilt of having failed
to honor your legacy.
196
561678
3103
sem medo ou culpa de não terem
conseguido honrar seu legado.
09:37
As part of my research,
I've been to seminars,
197
565866
2667
Como parte da minha pesquisa,
fui a seminários,
09:40
read books and talked
to palliative care nurses.
198
568557
3046
li livros e conversei
com enfermeiras cuidadoras.
E eu descobri que o resultado
de não falarmos sobre a morte
09:43
And I've come to understand
199
571627
1331
09:44
as a consequence
of not talking about death,
200
572982
3319
09:48
we don't know how to be around grief.
201
576325
2127
é não sabermos lidar com o luto.
09:51
And on the flip side,
if we talk about death more,
202
579591
3219
Por outro lado, se falarmos
mais sobre a morte,
09:54
we will become more comfortable with
the emotions we experience around grief.
203
582834
4317
ficaremos mais confortáveis
com as emoções que temos no luto.
10:01
I discovered, this year,
204
589556
1771
Descobri este ano
10:03
it's actually a privilege
to help someone exit this life,
205
591351
3873
que é na verdade um privilégio
ajudar alguém em sua partida desta vida,
10:07
and although my heart
is heavy with loss and sadness,
206
595248
3863
e, embora meu coração
esteja cheio de tristeza,
10:11
it is not heavy with regret.
207
599135
1524
não tenho arrependimentos.
10:13
I knew what dad wanted,
208
601524
1993
Eu sabia o que meu pai queria
10:15
and I feel at peace knowing
I could support his wishes.
209
603541
2872
e me sinto em paz por saber
que pude apoiar seus desejos.
10:21
My dad's last 24 hours
were in a peaceful coma,
210
609057
3641
As últimas 24 horas do meu pai
foram num coma tranquilo
10:24
and after days of around-the-clock care,
211
612722
2008
e, depois de dias de cuidados constantes,
10:26
we had time to sit, hold his hand,
212
614754
2413
tivemos tempo de sentar,
segurar a mão dele e nos despedirmos.
10:29
and say goodbye.
213
617191
1284
10:31
He passed away on a Monday morning
just before breakfast,
214
619494
3389
Ele faleceu numa segunda-feira,
pouco antes do café da manhã,
10:34
and after the doctor came
215
622907
1667
e, depois que o médico veio
e esperávamos pela funerária,
10:36
and we waited for the funeral home,
216
624598
2616
10:39
I went into the kitchen,
and I ate a big bowl of porridge.
217
627238
3746
fui para a cozinha e comi
um caçamba de mingau.
10:45
When I told some of my friends this,
they were really shocked.
218
633041
3095
Quando contei isso a alguns amigos,
eles ficaram chocados.
10:48
"How could you eat at a time like that?"
219
636947
3038
"Como pôde comer num momento desses?"
10:53
Well, I was hungry.
220
641164
2909
Bem, eu estava com fome.
10:56
(Laughter)
221
644097
4690
(Risos)
11:00
You see, grief impacted my sleep
and my ability to concentrate,
222
648811
3953
Sabe, o luto afetou meu sono
e minha capacidade de concentração,
11:04
but it never impacted my stomach.
I was always hungry.
223
652788
3251
mas nunca afetou meu apetite;
nunca perdi a fome.
11:08
(Laughter)
224
656063
1184
(Risos)
11:09
It's different for all of us,
225
657271
1610
Cada um reage de um jeito,
11:10
and it's really important
that we acknowledge that.
226
658905
2721
e é realmente importante
que reconheçamos isso.
Se não falarmos sobre nossa morte
e sobre a morte de entes queridos,
11:14
So if we don't talk about our death
and the death of loved ones,
227
662698
3151
11:17
how can we possibly support
a friend, a colleague, a neighbor
228
665873
4131
como poderemos apoiar um amigo,
um colega ou vizinho que esteja enlutado?
11:22
who is grieving?
229
670028
1617
Como dar apoio a uma pessoa
que perdeu alguém querido de repente,
11:23
How do we support someone
who has lost someone suddenly,
230
671669
3009
11:26
like an accident or suicide?
231
674702
1903
num acidente ou por suicídio?
Tendemos a evitar essas pessoas,
11:29
We tend to avoid them ...
232
677685
1460
não porque não nos importamos,
11:32
not because we don't care,
233
680359
2461
mas porque não sabemos o que dizer.
11:34
because we don't know what to say.
234
682844
1872
Sabemos que, apesar de amigos,
não podemos fazer nada,
11:37
We know as a friend we can't fix it,
235
685912
2652
11:40
we can't take away that pain,
236
688588
2595
não podemos fazer a dor sumir,
11:43
so we say things
to fill that awkward silence,
237
691207
3191
e por isso dizemos coisas
pra preencher aquele silêncio incômodo,
11:46
sometimes things we regret saying.
238
694422
1697
às vezes coisas das quais
nos arrependemos.
11:49
Examples would be:
239
697532
1285
Por exemplo:
11:53
"At least he isn't suffering anymore."
240
701158
2016
"Pelo menos ele não está mais sofrendo";
11:56
"At least you've got your memories."
241
704673
1745
"Pelo menos você terá recordações";
"Pelo menos não tem que pagar mais
estacionamento de hospital".
12:00
"At least you don't have to pay
for hospital parking anymore."
242
708215
2920
12:03
(Laughter)
243
711159
2096
(Risos)
12:05
Really, we don't need to say anything.
244
713279
2761
Na verdade, não precisamos dizer nada.
12:08
We just need to be.
245
716588
1460
Só precisamos estar presentes,
12:11
Be patient,
246
719211
1844
sermos pacientes,
12:13
be understanding,
247
721079
2182
sermos compreensivos
12:15
and be a listener.
248
723285
1227
e sermos ouvintes.
12:17
And if you can't be any of those things,
249
725672
3234
Se você não puder ser essas coisas,
12:20
then please, be the person who makes
the lasagna, the curry or the casserole,
250
728930
4211
por favor, faça uma lasanha,
um ensopado ou um escondidinho,
12:25
because your offerings
will be greatly appreciated.
251
733165
2460
porque essas coisas serão muito bem-vidas.
12:27
(Laughter)
252
735649
1563
(Risos)
12:29
I've been to 10 funerals in the last year,
253
737686
2342
Fui a dez funerais no último ano,
um dos quais ajudei a organizar.
12:32
one of which I helped arrange.
254
740052
1970
12:34
They ran the full gamut:
255
742046
2218
Teve de tudo:
uma cerimônia grega ortodoxa solene,
12:36
a very solemn Greek Orthodox service,
256
744288
2461
12:38
four Catholic requiem masses
257
746773
2611
quatro missas fúnebres católicas
12:41
and a garden party
258
749408
1659
e uma festa de jardim
12:43
where I made a toast while scattering
my friend's ashes around her garden
259
751091
4437
na qual fiz um brinde enquanto espalhava
as cinzas da minha amiga em seu jardim
12:47
with a soup ladle.
260
755552
1325
com uma concha de sopa.
12:48
(Laughter)
261
756901
1526
(Risos)
12:50
I have carried, kissed, written on
and toasted coffins with a shot of ouzo.
262
758451
4634
Já carreguei, beijei, escrevi e brindei
em caixões com uma dose de licor grego.
12:55
I have worn all black,
263
763783
1576
Já fui toda de preto, toda colorida
e até de vestido de festa.
12:57
all color and a party dress.
264
765383
2777
13:00
Despite the vast differences in sendoff,
265
768184
2285
Apesar de tanta diferença
nessas despedidas,
apesar de às vezes eu estar
fora da minha zona de conforto
13:02
despite me being at times
out of my comfort zone
266
770493
2522
13:05
doing something I've never done before,
267
773039
2842
fazendo algo que nunca tinha feito,
13:07
I drew comfort from one thing --
268
775905
1960
eu me mantinha tranquila por um motivo:
13:10
knowing that this is what each person
would have wanted.
269
778889
2984
saber que era o que cada uma
daquelas pessoas queria.
13:15
So what do I want?
270
783187
1150
Então, o que eu quero?
Bem, gosto de ser organizada,
então já tenho testamento,
13:17
Well, I like to be organized,
so I have the will,
271
785218
3992
13:21
I'm a registered organ donor,
and I have my investment property.
272
789234
3190
sou doadora de órgãos declarada
e tenho meu terreno de investimento.
13:25
All that is left is planning my sendoff,
273
793186
2731
Só me falta planejar minha despedida:
13:27
a big party, lots of champagne,
274
795941
3341
uma grande festa, muito champanhe,
13:31
color, laughter, and of course,
music to remember me by.
275
799306
3714
cores, risos e, é claro,
música pra lembrarem de mim.
13:35
Thank you.
276
803496
1151
Obrigada.
13:36
(Applause)
