This is the exact moment

4000
C’est à ce moment précis
00:16
that I started creating something called Tinkering School.
1
4000
5000
00:21
Tinkering School is a place where kids can pick up sticks
2
9000
4000
00:25
and hammers and other dangerous objects,
3
13000
4000
des marteaux et d’autres objets dangereux,
00:29
and be trusted.
4
17000
2000
et où on leur fait confiance.
00:31
Trusted not to hurt themselves,
5
19000
2000
00:33
and trusted not to hurt others.
6
21000
4000
00:37
Tinkering School doesn't follow a set curriculum,
7
25000
3000
00:40
and there are no tests.
8
28000
2000
il n’y a jamais d’examen.
00:42
We're not trying to teach anybody any specific thing.
9
30000
4000
00:46
When the kids arrive
10
34000
3000
Quand les enfants arrivent,
00:49
they're confronted with lots of stuff:
11
37000
2000
00:51
wood and nails and rope and wheels,
12
39000
4000
00:55
and lots of tools, real tools.
13
43000
5000
de nombreux outils, de vrais outils.
01:00
It's a six-day immersive experience for the kids.
14
48000
5000
01:05
And within that context, we can offer the kids time --
15
53000
4000
01:09
something that seems in short supply
16
57000
3000
quelque chose qui semble manqué
01:12
in their over-scheduled lives.
17
60000
3000
dans leur vie surprogrammée.
01:15
Our goal is to ensure that they leave
18
63000
3000
01:18
with a better sense of how to make things
19
66000
2000
01:20
than when they arrived,
20
68000
3000
qu'à leur arrivée,
01:23
and the deep internal realization
21
71000
3000
et aussi avec le sentiment profond
01:26
that you can figure things out by fooling around.
22
74000
4000
01:30
Nothing ever turns out as planned ... ever.
23
78000
5000
Rien ne se passe jamais comme prévu...
01:35
(Laughter)
24
83000
2000
jamais. (Rires)
01:37
And the kids soon learn
25
85000
2000
Et les enfants apprennent vite
01:39
that all projects go awry --
26
87000
4000
que tous les projets vont de travers --
01:43
(Laughter)
27
91000
1000
(Rires)
01:44
and become at ease with the idea that every step
28
92000
2000
01:46
in a project is a step closer
29
94000
3000
d’un projet est un pas de plus
01:49
to sweet success,
30
97000
3000
vers un brillant succès,
01:52
or gleeful calamity.
31
100000
4000
ou une catastrophe triomphante.
01:56
We start from doodles and sketches.
32
104000
4000
Nous partons de griffonnages, de croquis,
02:00
And sometimes we make real plans.
33
108000
3000
02:03
And sometimes we just start building.
34
111000
4000
Ou bien, nous commençons directement à construire.
02:07
Building is at the heart of the experience:
35
115000
3000
02:10
hands on, deeply immersed
36
118000
3000
02:13
and fully committed to the problem at hand.
37
121000
4000
02:17
Robin and I, acting as collaborators,
38
125000
3000
Robin et moi, comme collaborateurs,
02:20
keep the landscape of the projects
39
128000
2000
essayons de mener les projets
02:22
tilted towards completion.
40
130000
3000
vers leur aboutissement.
02:25
Success is in the doing,
41
133000
3000
Le succès, c’est la réalisation.
02:28
and failures are celebrated and analyzed.
42
136000
3000
Et les fiascos sont célébrés et analysés.
02:31
Problems become puzzles
43
139000
3000
Les problèmes deviennent des casse-tête
02:34
and obstacles disappear.
44
142000
4000
et puis les obstacles disparaissent.
02:38
When faced with particularly difficult
45
146000
2000
Quand des contretemps ou des complications
02:40
setbacks or complexities,
46
148000
2000
particulièrement difficiles se présentent,
02:42
a really interesting behavior emerges: decoration.
47
150000
5000
une réaction très intéressante se produit :
02:47
(Laughter)
48
155000
3000
la décoration. (Rires)
02:50
Decoration of the unfinished project
49
158000
2000
La décoration du projet inachevé
02:52
is a kind of conceptual incubation.
50
160000
4000
est une sorte d’incubation conceptuelle.
02:56
From these interludes come deep insights
51
164000
3000
02:59
and amazing new approaches to solving the problems
52
167000
3000
03:02
that had them frustrated just moments before.
53
170000
5000
qui les frustraient, quelques instants plus tôt.
03:07
All materials are available for use.
54
175000
5000
03:12
Even those mundane, hateful, plastic grocery bags
55
180000
6000
03:18
can become a bridge
56
186000
2000
peuvent être transformés en un pont
03:20
stronger than anyone imagined.
57
188000
4000
plus solide que vous pourriez l'imaginer.
03:24
And the things that they build
58
192000
3000
Et ce qu’ils fabriquent
03:27
amaze even themselves.
59
195000
3000
les émerveille eux-mêmes.
