ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Pranav Mistry - Director of research, Samsung Research America
As an MIT grad student, Pranav Mistry invented SixthSense, a wearable device that enables new interactions between the real world and the world of data.

Why you should listen

When Pranav Mistry was a PhD student in the Fluid Interfaces Group at MIT's Media Lab, he worked with lab director Pattie Maes to create some of the most entertaining and thought-provoking interfaces the world had ever seen. And not just computer interfaces, mind you -- these are ways to help the digital and the actual worlds interface. Imagine: intelligent sticky notes, Quickies, that can be searched and can send reminders; a pen that draws in 3D; and TaPuMa, a tangible public map that can act as Google of physical world. And of course the legendary SixthSense, which is now open sourced

Before his studies at MIT, he worked with Microsoft as a UX researcher; he's a graduate of IIT. Now, as director of research at Samsung Research America, Mistry heads the Think Tank Team, an interdisciplinary group of researchers that hunts for new ways to mix digital informational with real-world interactions. As an example, Mistry launched the company's smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, in 2013.

03:44
Among가운데 all these experiments실험,

03:46
there was one thing in common공유지:
85
211000
2000
03:48
I was trying견딜 수 없는 to bring가져오다 a part부품 of the physical물리적 인 world세계 to the digital디지털 world세계.
86
213000
4000
03:52
I was taking취득 some part부품 of the objects사물,

89
223000
3000
04:01
because the goal was to make our computing컴퓨팅 interfaces인터페이스 more intuitive직관적 인.
90
226000
3000

04:04
But then I realized깨달은 that we humans인간
91
229000
2000
04:06
are not actually사실은 interested관심있는 in computing컴퓨팅.
92
231000
3000
04:09
What we are interested관심있는 in is information정보.
93
234000
3000
04:12
We want to know about things.
94
237000
2000
04:14
We want to know about dynamic동적 things going around.
95
239000
2000
04:16
So I thought, around last year -- in the beginning처음 of the last year --
96
241000
5000
04:21
I started시작한 thinking생각, "Why can I not take this approach접근 in the reverse way?"
97
246000
3000
"이전에 했던 접근법을 반대로 생각하면 어떨까?"
04:24
Maybe, "How about I take my digital디지털 world세계
98
249000
3000
04:27
and paint페인트 the physical물리적 인 world세계 with that digital디지털 information정보?"
99
252000
5000
04:32
Because pixels픽셀 are actually사실은, right now, confined갇힌 in these rectangular직사각형의 devices장치들
100
257000
4000

04:38
Why can I not remove풀다 this confine경계
102
263000
3000
04:41
and take that to my everyday매일 objects사물, everyday매일 life
103
266000
3000
04:44
so that I don't need to learn배우다 the new새로운 language언어
104
269000
2000
04:46
for interacting상호 작용하는 with those pixels픽셀?
105
271000
3000
04:50
So, in order주문 to realize깨닫다 this dream,
106
275000
2000
04:52
I actually사실은 thought of putting퍼팅 a big-size큰 사이즈 projector영사기 on my head머리.
107
277000
3000
04:55
I think that's why this is called전화 한 a head-mounted머리에 장착 된 projector영사기, isn't it?
108
280000
3000
04:58
I took~했다 it very literally말 그대로,
109
283000
2000
05:00
and took~했다 my bike자전거 helmet헬멧,
110

05:02
put a little cut절단 over there so that the projector영사기 actually사실은 fits맞다 nicely훌륭하게.
111
287000
3000
05:05
So now, what I can do --
112
290000
2000
05:07
I can augment증강제 the world세계 around me with this digital디지털 information정보.
113
292000
4000
05:11
But later후에,
114
296000
2000
05:13
I realized깨달은 that I actually사실은 wanted to interact상호 작용하다 with those digital디지털 pixels픽셀, also또한.
115
298000
3000
05:16
So I put a small작은 camera카메라 over there,
