I did not choose to be born

00:29
a country rife with conflict.

00:39
I've always rejected it

00:41

00:44
I choose to be called Mary.

00:48
As a teacher, I've stood
in front of 120 students,
in front of 120 students,
11
36154
3683
00:51
so this stage does not intimidate me.
12
39861
2999
00:55
My students come from war-torn countries.
13
43996
3549
01:00
They're so different from each other,
14
48101
2537
01:02
but they have one thing in common:
15
50662
2818
01:05
they fled their homes
in order to stay alive.
in order to stay alive.
16
53504
3865

Some of them belong to parents
back home in South Sudan

01:14
who are killing each other
18
62151
1322
01:15
because they belong to a different tribe
or they have a different belief.
or they have a different belief.
19
63497
4450

01:20
Others come from other African countries
devastated by war.

01:25
But when they enter my class,
they make friends,
they make friends,
21
73823
3035
01:28
they walk home together,
22
76882
1637
01:31
they do their homework together.
23
79149

01:33
There is no hatred allowed in my class.
24

01:38
My story is like that
of so many other refugees.
of so many other refugees.
25
86078
4133
01:43
The war came when I was still a baby.
26
91063
2074
01:46
And my father,
27
94131
1217
01:47
who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
28
95372
2855
01:50
was doing what other men were doing:
29
98251
2576
01:52
fighting for the country.
30
100851
1727
01:55
He had two wives and many children.
31
103283
3120
02:00
My mother was his second wife,
32
108459
2329
02:02
married to him at the age of 16.
33
110812
2279
02:05
This is simply because my mother
came from a poor background,
came from a poor background,
34
113588
4022
02:10
and she had no choice.
35
118279
1800
02:12
My father, on the other hand, was rich.
36
120103
2942
02:15
He had many cows.
37
123069
1333
02:18
Gunshots were the order of the day.
38
126987
3187
02:24
My community was constantly under attack.
39
132713
2892
02:28
Communities would fight each other
as they took water along the Nile.
as they took water along the Nile.
40
136526
4640
02:33
But that was not all.
41
141190
1292
02:35
Planes would drop the spinning
and terrifying bombs
and terrifying bombs
42
143257
3904
02:39
that chopped off people's limbs.
43
147185
2226
02:41
But the most terrifying thing
for every single parent
for every single parent
44
149435
3276
02:44
was to see their children being abducted
and turned into young soldiers.
and turned into young soldiers.
45
152735
6214
02:51
My mother dug a trench
46
159877
2321
02:54
that soon became our home.
47
162222
2149
02:57
But yet, we did not feel protected.
48
165150
2353
03:00
She had to flee in search
of a safe place for us.
of a safe place for us.
49
168455
3950
03:04
I was four years old,
and my younger sister was two.
and my younger sister was two.
50
172429
3422
03:09
We joined a huge mass of people,
51
177267
2013
03:11
and together we walked
for many agonizing days
for many agonizing days
52
179304
3916
03:15
in search of a secure place.
53
183244
1922
03:17
But we could barely rest
54
185190
1673
03:19
before we were attacked again.
55
187954
2909
03:24
I remember my mother was pregnant,
56
192159
2444
03:26
when she would take turns
to carry me and my younger sister.
to carry me and my younger sister.
57
194627
3051
03:30
We finally made it across
the Kenyan border, yes.
the Kenyan border, yes.
58
198362
2874
03:33
But that was the longest journey
that I have ever had in my whole life.
that I have ever had in my whole life.
59
201887
5147
03:40
My feet were raw with blisters.
60
208028
3523
03:45
To our surprise,
61
213630
1556
03:47
we found other family members
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
62
215210
3311
03:50
where you all are today,
63
218545
1667
03:52
the Kakuma camp.
64
220236
1706
03:53
Now, I want you all to be very quiet
just for a moment.
just for a moment.
65
221966
3680
04:00
Do you hear that?
66
228574
1579
04:04
The sound of silence.
67
232022
3184
04:08
No gunshots.
68
236268
1374
04:11
Peace, at last.
69
239157
2343
04:14
That was my first memory of this camp.
70
242279
3455
04:19
When you move from a war zone
71
247154
2353
04:21
and come to a secure place like Kakuma,
72
249531
2523
04:24
you've really gone far.
73
252078
1451
04:27
I only stayed in the camp
for three years, though.
for three years, though.
74
255655
2901
04:30
My father, who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
75
258580
3064
04:33
came back into my life.
76
261668
1387
04:35
And he organized for me
to move with my uncle
to move with my uncle
77
263697
3389
04:39
to our family in Nakuru.
78
267110
1560
04:41
There, I found my father's first wife,
79
269328
2443
04:43
my half sisters and my half brothers.
80
271795
3581
04:47
I got enrolled in school.
81
275400
2079
04:49
I remember my first day in school --
I could sing and laugh again --
I could sing and laugh again --
82
277503
4578
04:54
and my first set of school
uniforms, you bet.
uniforms, you bet.
83
282105
3298
04:58
It was amazing.
84
286317
1361
05:01
But then I came to realize
85
289360
2405
05:04
that my uncle did not find it fit
for me to go to school,
for me to go to school,
86
292622
4262
05:10
simply because I was a girl.
87
298194
2679
05:14
My half brothers were his first priority.
88
302649
2941
05:18
He would say, "Educating a girl
is a waste of time."
is a waste of time."
89
306622
3761
05:22
And for that reason, I missed
many days of school,
many days of school,
90
310773
4961
05:27
because the fees were not paid.
91
315758
1977
05:31
My father stepped in
92
319364
1917
05:33
and organized for me
to go to boarding school.
to go to boarding school.
93
321305
3123
05:37
I remember the faith that he put in me
over the couple of years to come.
over the couple of years to come.
94
325253
4060
05:41
He would say, "Education is an animal
that you have to overcome.
that you have to overcome.
95
329337
5663
05:47
With an education, you can survive.
96
335779
3322
05:51
Education shall be your first husband."
97
339838
4086
05:56
And with these words came in
his first big investment.
his first big investment.
98
344557
5076
06:01
I felt lucky!
99
349657
1275
06:03
But I was missing something:
100
351627
3179
06:08
my mother.
101
356462
1151
06:11
My mother had been left
behind in the camp,
behind in the camp,
102
359064
2491
06:14
and I had not seen her since I left it.
103
362511
2513
06:18
Six years without seeing her
was really long.
was really long.
104
366197
4619
06:24
I was alone,
105
372245
1243
06:26
in school,
106
374178
1239
06:28
when I heard of her death.
107
376117
1618
06:32
I've seen many people back in South Sudan
108
380128
2576
06:36
lose their lives.
109
384316
1661
06:38
I've heard from neighbors
110
386001
1923
06:39
lose their sons, their husbands,
111
387948
2477
06:43
their children.
112
391159
1276
06:45
But I never thought that that
would ever come into my life.
would ever come into my life.
113
393104
3469
06:49
A month earlier, my stepmother,
114
397840
3556
06:53
who had been so good to me
back in Nakuru, died first.
back in Nakuru, died first.
115
401420
4019
06:59
Then I came to realize that
after giving birth to four girls,
after giving birth to four girls,
116
407764
5438
07:05
my mother had finally
given birth to something
given birth to something
117
413226
3315
07:08
that could have made her
be accepted into the community --
be accepted into the community --
118
416565
3711
07:12
a baby boy,
119
420300
1547
07:13
my baby brother.
120
421871
1580
07:16
But he, too,
121
424731
1987
07:18
joined the list of the dead.
122
426742
2612
07:23
The most hurting part for me
123
431982
1909
07:27
was the fact that I wasn't able
to attend my mother's burial.
to attend my mother's burial.
124
435409
3940
07:31
I wasn't allowed.
125
439984
1286
07:34
They said her family did not find it fit
126
442654
4700
07:39
for her children, who are all girls,
to attend her burial,
to attend her burial,
127
447378
3784
07:44
simply because we were girls.
128
452016
1748
07:46
They would lament to me and say,
129
454806
2029
07:49
"We are sorry, Mary, for your loss.
130
457634
1996
07:52
We are sorry that your parents
never left behind any children."
never left behind any children."
131
460689
5159
07:59
And I would wonder:
132
467415
1435
08:01
What are we?
133
469792
1184
08:04
Are we not children?
134
472061
1324
08:06
In the mentality of my community,
135
474858
2902
08:09
only the boy child counted.
136
477784
1906
08:13
And for that reason,
I knew this was the end of me.
I knew this was the end of me.
137
481419
3287
08:19
But I was the eldest girl.
138
487606
1636
08:21
I had to take care of my siblings.
139
489794
1936
08:23
I had to ensure they went to school.
140
491754
2036
08:26
I was 13 years old.
141
494674
2504
08:29
How could I have made that happen?
142
497745
2272
08:33
I came back to the camp
to take care of my siblings.
to take care of my siblings.
143
501208
3603
08:36
I've never felt so stuck.
144
504835
1555
08:39
But then, one of my aunts, Auntie Okoi,
145
507800
4377
08:44
decided to take my sisters.
146
512201
1789
08:46
My father sent me money from Juba
for me to go back to school.
for me to go back to school.
147
514643
3349
08:50
Boarding school was heaven,
but it was also so hard.
but it was also so hard.
148
518829
3690
08:55
I remember during the visiting days
when parents would come to school,
when parents would come to school,
149
523154
3573
08:58
and my father would miss.
150
526751
1404
09:00
But when he did come,
151
528179
1710
09:01
he repeated the same faith in me.
152
529913
1787
09:03
This time he would say,
153
531724
1306
09:05
"Mary, you cannot go astray,
154
533054
2709
09:07
because you are the future
of your siblings."
of your siblings."
155
535787
3202
09:12
But then, in 2012,
156
540142
3622
09:15
life took away the only thing
that I was clinging on.
that I was clinging on.
157
543788
3974
09:20
My father died.
158
548395
1326
09:23
My grades in school started to collapse,
159
551783
2236
09:27
and when I sat for my final
high school exams in 2015,
high school exams in 2015,
160
555643
5981
09:33
I was devastated to receive a C grade.
161
561648
3592
09:37
OK, I keep telling students in my class,
162
565264
2301
09:39
"It's not about the A's;
it's about doing your best."
it's about doing your best."
163
567589
3369
09:43
That was not my best.
164
571461
1179
09:45
I was determined.
165
573887
1265
09:47
I wanted to go back and try again.
166
575176
2380
09:50
But my parents were gone.
167
578664
1631
09:52
I had no one to take care of me,
168
580972
1555
09:54
and I had no one to pay that fee.
169
582551
1894
09:56
I felt so hopeless.
170
584863
1519
10:00
But then, one of my best friends,
171
588412
2150
10:02
a beautiful Kenyan lady, Esther Kaecha,
172
590586
3353
10:05
called me during this devastating moment,
173
593963
2064
10:08
and she was like, "Mary,
you have a strong will.
you have a strong will.
174
596051
3361
10:11
And I have a plan,
and it's going to work."
and it's going to work."
175
599436
2249
10:14
OK, when you're in those devastating
moments, you accept anything, right?
moments, you accept anything, right?
176
602261
3997
10:18
So the plan was, she organized
some travel money
some travel money
177
606282
3111
10:21
for us to travel to
Anester Victory Girls High School.
Anester Victory Girls High School.
178
609417
3111
10:25
I remember that day so well.
179
613262
1431
10:26
It was raining when we entered
the principal's office.
the principal's office.
180
614717
3457
10:30
We were shaking like two chickens
that had been rained on,
that had been rained on,
181
618198
3096
10:33
and we looked at him.
182
621318
1174
10:34
He was asking, "What do you want?"
183
622516
1897
10:36
And we looked at him with the cat face.
184
624890
2218
10:39
"We just want to go back to school."
185
627132
2101
10:41
Well, believe it or not,
he not only paid our school fees
he not only paid our school fees
186
629257
4339
10:45
but also our uniform
and pocket money for food.
and pocket money for food.
187
633620
4113
10:49
Clap for him.
188
637757
1223
10:51
(Applause)
189
639004
1823
10:53
When I finished my high school career,
190
641766
2082
10:55
I became the head girl.
191
643872
1533
10:57
And when I sat for the KCSE
for a second time,
for a second time,
192
645984
3365
11:01
I was able to receive a B minus. Clap.
193
649373
2650
11:04
(Applause)
194
652047
2240
11:06
Thank you.
195
654311
1155
11:07
So I really want to say thank you
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
196
655490
4410
11:11
and the whole Anester fraternity
for giving me that chance.
for giving me that chance.
197
659924
3683
11:17
From time to time,
198
665084
1659
有時,
11:18
members of my family will insist
that my sister and I should get married
that my sister and I should get married
199
666767
4803
11:23
so that somebody will take care of us.
200
671594
2098
11:26
They will say,
201
674722
1303
11:28
"We have a man for you."
202
676049
1348
11:30
I really hate the fact that people
took us as property rather than children.
took us as property rather than children.
203
678153
5440
11:36
Sometimes they will jokingly say,
204
684092
1995
11:38
"You are going to lose your market value
205
686111
2112
11:40
the more educated you become."
206
688247
1678
11:42
But the truth is,
207
690457
1982
11:44
an educated woman is feared
in my community.
in my community.
208
692463
3429
11:47
But I told them, this is not what I want.
209
695916
1999
11:51
I don't want to get kids at 16
like my mother did.
like my mother did.
210
699056
2993
11:55
This is not my life.
211
703494
1597
11:57
Even though my sisters
and I are suffering,
and I are suffering,
212
705528
2076
11:59
there's no way we are
heading in that direction.
heading in that direction.
213
707628
2528
12:02
I refuse to repeat history.
214
710528
2436
12:06
Educating a girl will create
equal and stable societies.
equal and stable societies.
215
714094
5148
12:11
And educated refugees will be the hope
216
719266
4303
12:15
of rebuilding their countries someday.
217
723593
2865
12:18
Girls and women have
a part to play in this
a part to play in this
218
726956
3753
12:22
just as much as men.
219
730733
1821
12:24
Well, we have men in my family
that encourage me to move on:
that encourage me to move on:
220
732578
3681
12:28
my half brothers and also my half sisters.
221
736283
2956
12:32
When I finished my high school career,
222
740726
1918
12:35
I moved my sisters to Nairobi,
where they live with my stepsister.
where they live with my stepsister.
223
743285
5517
12:41
They live 17 people in a house.
224
749411
2093
12:44
But don't pity us.
225
752138
1195
12:45
The most important thing
is that they all get a decent education.
is that they all get a decent education.
226
753935
5428
12:53
The winners of today
227
761534
1546
12:56
are the losers of yesterday,
228
764090
1907
12:58
but who never gave up.
229
766557
1580
13:00
And that is who we are,
230
768820
1889
13:02
my sisters and I.
231
770733
1393
13:04
And I'm so proud of that.
232
772150
2001
13:06
My biggest investment in life --
233
774175
1781
13:07
(Applause)
234
775980
1040
13:09
is the education of my sisters.
235
777044
2879
13:12
Education creates an equal and fair chance
for everyone to make it.
for everyone to make it.
236
780868
4668
13:18
I personally believe education
is not all about the syllabus.
is not all about the syllabus.
237
786128
3291
13:21
It's about friendship.
238
789841
1347
13:23
It's about discovering our talents.
239
791746
2235
13:26
It's about discovering our destiny.
240
794005
3233
13:29
I will, for example, not forget
the joy that I had
the joy that I had
241
797914
2554
13:32
when I first had singing
lessons in school,
lessons in school,
242
800492
2238
13:34
which is still a passion of mine.
243
802754
1643
13:36
But I wouldn't have gotten that
244
804421
2057
13:38
anywhere else.
245
806502
1257
13:41
As a teacher, I see
my classroom as a laboratory
my classroom as a laboratory
246
809061
4407
13:45
that not only generates
skills and knowledge
skills and knowledge
247
813492
2945
13:48
but also understanding and hope.
248
816461
2854
13:51
Let's take a tree.
249
819881
1285
13:53
A tree may have its branches cut,
250
821894
2045
13:57
but give it water, and it will
grow new branches.
grow new branches.
251
825022
4429
14:01
For the child of war,
252
829475
1603
14:03
an education can turn their tears of loss
into a passion for peace.
into a passion for peace.
253
831102
6027
14:09
And for that reason, I refuse to give up
on a single student in my class.
on a single student in my class.
254
837153
5010
14:14
(Applause)
255
842187
2316
14:16
Education heals.
256
844527
1442
14:19
The school environment
257
847079
2026
14:21
gives you a focus to focus ahead.
258
849129
3041
14:25
Let's take it this way:
259
853245
1323
14:26
when you're busy solving
mathematical equations,
mathematical equations,
260
854592
2463
14:29
and you are memorizing poetry,
261
857079
2285
14:31
you forget the violence
that you witnessed back home.
that you witnessed back home.
262
859388
4071
14:35
And that is the power of education.
263
863931
3485
14:39
It creates this place for peace.
264
867440
2850
14:42
Kakuma is teeming with learners.
265
870856
1969
14:44
Over 85,000 students
are enrolled in schools here,
are enrolled in schools here,
266
872849
5177
14:50
which makes up 40 percent
of the refugee population.
of the refugee population.
267
878050
3547
14:54
It includes children who lost years
of education because of the war back home.
of education because of the war back home.
268
882040
6905
15:01
And I want to ask you a question:
269
889584
1895
15:04
If education is about
building a generation of hope,
building a generation of hope,
270
892568
4354
15:09
why are there 120 students
packed in my classroom?
packed in my classroom?
271
897754
4644
15:16
Why is it that only six percent
of the primary school students
of the primary school students
272
904288
4019
15:20
are making it to high school,
273
908331
1736
15:22
simply because we do not have
enough places for them?
enough places for them?
274
910091
3663
15:26
And why is it that only one percent
of the secondary school graduates
of the secondary school graduates
275
914376
5059
15:31
are making it to university?
276
919459
1661
15:34
I began by saying that I am a teacher.
277
922458
2375
15:37
But once again, I have become a student.
278
925692
3318
15:42
In March, I moved to Rwanda
279
930247
2066
15:45
