As a teacher, I've stood

Enquanto professora, já falei
em frente de 120 alunos,

São todos muito diferentes uns dos outros,
01:02
but they have one thing in common:
15

mas têm uma coisa em comum:
01:05
they fled their homes
in order to stay alive.

Mas, quando entram na minha turma,
fazem amigos,

they walk home together,

voltam para casa juntos,
01:31

A minha história é igual
a de muitos outros refugiados.

2074
A guerra começou quando eu
ainda era bebé.

01:46
And my father,
27
94131
1217
O meu pai,
01:47
who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
28
95372
2855
que tinha estado ausente
durante quase toda a minha infância,
durante quase toda a minha infância,
01:50
was doing what other men were doing:
29
98251
2576
estava a fazer
o que os outros homens faziam:
o que os outros homens faziam:
01:52
fighting for the country.
30
100851
1727
lutava pelo seu país.
01:55
He had two wives and many children.
31
103283
3120
Tinha duas mulheres e muitos filhos.
02:00
My mother was his second wife,
32
108459
2329
A minha mãe era a segunda mulher.
02:02
married to him at the age of 16.
33
110812
2279
Casara com ele aos 16 anos.
02:05
This is simply because my mother
came from a poor background,
came from a poor background,
34
113588
4022
Isto porque a minha mãe
era de uma origem modesta,
era de uma origem modesta,
02:10
and she had no choice.
35
118279
1800
e não tinha alternativa.
02:12
My father, on the other hand, was rich.
36
120103
2942
O meu pai, por outro lado, era rico.
02:15
He had many cows.
37
123069
1333
Tinha muitas vacas.
02:18
Gunshots were the order of the day.
38
126987
3187
Os tiros faziam parte do dia a dia.
02:24
My community was constantly under attack.
39
132713
2892
A minha comunidade estava
sempre a ser atacada.
sempre a ser atacada.
02:28
Communities would fight each other
as they took water along the Nile.
as they took water along the Nile.
40
136526
4640
As comunidades lutavam
umas contra as outras
umas contra as outras
quando iam buscar água ao Nilo.
02:33
But that was not all.
41
141190
1292
Mas não era só isso.
02:35
Planes would drop the spinning
and terrifying bombs
and terrifying bombs
42
143257
3904
Aviões atiravam as terríveis bombas
que cortavam os membros das pessoas.
02:39
that chopped off people's limbs.
43
147185
2226
02:41
But the most terrifying thing
for every single parent
for every single parent
44
149435
3276
Mas a coisa mais terrível
para todos os pais
para todos os pais
02:44
was to see their children being abducted
and turned into young soldiers.
and turned into young soldiers.
45
152735
6214
era verem os filhos serem raptados
e transformados em crianças-soldados.
02:51
My mother dug a trench
46
159877
2321
A minha mãe escavou uma trincheira
02:54
that soon became our home.
47
162222
2149
que, em breve, passou a ser a nossa casa.
02:57
But yet, we did not feel protected.
48
165150
2353
Mesmo assim, não nos sentíamos protegidos.
03:00
She had to flee in search
of a safe place for us.
of a safe place for us.
49
168455
3950
Teve que fugir, procurando
um local seguro para todos nós.
um local seguro para todos nós.
03:04
I was four years old,
and my younger sister was two.
and my younger sister was two.
50
172429
3422
Eu tinha quatro anos,
e a minha irmã tinha dois.
e a minha irmã tinha dois.
03:09
We joined a huge mass of people,
51
177267
2013
Juntámo-nos a uma enorme
quantidade de gente
quantidade de gente
03:11
and together we walked
for many agonizing days
for many agonizing days
52
179304
3916
e, juntos, caminhámos
durante muitos dias angustiantes
durante muitos dias angustiantes
03:15
in search of a secure place.
53
183244
1922
à procura de um local seguro.
03:17
But we could barely rest
54
185190
1673
Mas quase não conseguíamos descansar
03:19
before we were attacked again.
55
187954
2909
antes de sermos atacados de novo.
03:24
I remember my mother was pregnant,
56
192159
2444
Lembro-me que a minha mãe estava grávida
03:26
when she would take turns
to carry me and my younger sister.
to carry me and my younger sister.
57
194627
3051
quando alternava em transportar-me
a mim ou à minha irmã mais nova.
a mim ou à minha irmã mais nova.
03:30
We finally made it across
the Kenyan border, yes.
the Kenyan border, yes.
58
198362
2874
Por fim, conseguimos atravessar
à fronteira para o Quénia.
à fronteira para o Quénia.
03:33
But that was the longest journey
that I have ever had in my whole life.
that I have ever had in my whole life.
59
201887
5147
Mas foi a viagem mais longa
que fiz em toda a minha vida.
que fiz em toda a minha vida.
03:40
My feet were raw with blisters.
60
208028
3523
Eu tinha os pés estavam cheios de bolhas.
Para nossa surpresa,
03:45
To our surprise,
61
213630
1556
encontrámos outros membros da família
que tinham fugido para o acampamento
que tinham fugido para o acampamento
03:47
we found other family members
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
62
215210
3311
03:50
where you all are today,
63
218545
1667
onde agora estávamos todos,
03:52
the Kakuma camp.
64
220236
1706
o acampamento Kákuma.
03:53
Now, I want you all to be very quiet
just for a moment.
just for a moment.
65
221966
3680
Peço-vos agora que se mantenham
silenciosos por instantes.
silenciosos por instantes.
04:00
Do you hear that?
66
228574
1579
Estão a ouvir?
04:04
The sound of silence.
67
232022
3184
O som do silêncio.
04:08
No gunshots.
68
236268
1374
Nada de tiros.
04:11
Peace, at last.
69
239157
2343
Por fim, a paz.
04:14
That was my first memory of this camp.
70
242279
3455
É esta a minha primeira
lembrança deste acampamento.
lembrança deste acampamento.
04:19
When you move from a war zone
71
247154
2353
Quando fugimos de uma zona de guerra
04:21
and come to a secure place like Kakuma,
72
249531
2523
e chegamos a um local seguro
como Kákuma,
como Kákuma,
04:24
you've really gone far.
73
252078
1451
chegámos muito longe.
04:27
I only stayed in the camp
for three years, though.
for three years, though.
74
255655
2901
Mas só fiquei no acampamento
durante três anos.
durante três anos.
O meu pai, que tinha estado ausente
durante quase toda a minha infância,
durante quase toda a minha infância,
04:30
My father, who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
75
258580
3064
04:33
came back into my life.
76
261668
1387
voltou a entrar na minha vida.
04:35
And he organized for me
to move with my uncle
to move with my uncle
77
263697
3389
Organizou as coisas para que
eu e o meu tio
eu e o meu tio
fôssemos para junto
da nossa família em Nakuru.
da nossa família em Nakuru.
04:39
to our family in Nakuru.
78
267110
1560
04:41
There, I found my father's first wife,
79
269328
2443
Aí, encontrei a primeira mulher
do meu pai,
do meu pai,
04:43
my half sisters and my half brothers.
80
271795
3581
os meus meios-irmãos e meias-irmãs.
04:47
I got enrolled in school.
81
275400
2079
Matriculei-me na escola.
04:49
I remember my first day in school --
I could sing and laugh again --
I could sing and laugh again --
82
277503
4578
Lembro-me do primeiro dia na escola
— voltei a cantar e a rir —
— voltei a cantar e a rir —
04:54
and my first set of school
uniforms, you bet.
uniforms, you bet.
83
282105
3298
e do meu primeiro uniforme
da escola.
da escola.
04:58
It was amazing.
84
286317
1361
Era fantástico.
05:01
But then I came to realize
85
289360
2405
Mas, depois, acabei por perceber
que o meu tio não achava adequado
que eu andasse na escola
que eu andasse na escola
05:04
that my uncle did not find it fit
for me to go to school,
for me to go to school,
86
292622
4262
05:10
simply because I was a girl.
87
298194
2679
só porque eu era uma rapariga.
05:14
My half brothers were his first priority.
88
302649
2941
Os meus meios-irmãos
eram a sua prioridade.
eram a sua prioridade.
05:18
He would say, "Educating a girl
is a waste of time."
is a waste of time."
89
306622
3761
Dizia: "Ensinar uma rapariga
é uma perda de tempo".
é uma perda de tempo".
05:22
And for that reason, I missed
many days of school,
many days of school,
90
310773
4961
Por isso, perdi muitos dias de escola,
05:27
because the fees were not paid.
91
315758
1977
porque ele não pagava as propinas.
05:31
My father stepped in
92
319364
1917
O meu pai interveio
05:33
and organized for me
to go to boarding school.
to go to boarding school.
93
321305
3123
e enviou-me para um internato.
05:37
I remember the faith that he put in me
over the couple of years to come.
over the couple of years to come.
94
325253
4060
Recordo a fé que ele tinha em mim
durante os anos que se seguiram.
durante os anos que se seguiram.
05:41
He would say, "Education is an animal
that you have to overcome.
that you have to overcome.
95
329337
5663
Dizia: "A instrução é um animal
que tens que dominar.
que tens que dominar.
05:47
With an education, you can survive.
96
335779
3322
"Com instrução, podes sobreviver.
05:51
Education shall be your first husband."
97
339838
4086
"A instrução será o teu primeiro marido".
05:56
And with these words came in
his first big investment.
his first big investment.
98
344557
5076
Estas palavras foram acompanhadas
do seu primeiro grande investimento.
do seu primeiro grande investimento.
06:01
I felt lucky!
99
349657
1275
Sentia-me cheia de sorte!
06:03
But I was missing something:
100
351627
3179
Mas faltava-me uma coisa,
06:08
my mother.
101
356462
1151
a minha mãe.
06:11
My mother had been left
behind in the camp,
behind in the camp,
102
359064
2491
A minha mãe tinha ficado
no acampamento
no acampamento
06:14
and I had not seen her since I left it.
103
362511
2513
e eu nunca mais a tinha visto
desde que de lá saíra.
desde que de lá saíra.
06:18
Six years without seeing her
was really long.
was really long.
104
366197
4619
Seis anos sem a ver era muito tempo.
06:24
I was alone,
105
372245
1243
Eu estava sozinha,
06:26
in school,
106
374178
1239
na escola,
06:28
when I heard of her death.
107
376117
1618
quando me disseram
que ela tinha morrido.
que ela tinha morrido.
06:32
I've seen many people back in South Sudan
108
380128
2576
Eu tinha visto, no Sudão do Sul,
muitas pessoas perderem a vida.
06:36
lose their lives.
109
384316
1661
06:38
I've heard from neighbors
110
386001
1923
Tinha ouvido falar de vizinhas
06:39
lose their sons, their husbands,
111
387948
2477
que perderam os filhos, os maridos,
06:43
their children.
112
391159
1276
todos os filhos.
06:45
But I never thought that that
would ever come into my life.
would ever come into my life.
113
393104
3469
Mas nunca pensara que isso
me aconteceria na vida.
me aconteceria na vida.
06:49
A month earlier, my stepmother,
114
397840
3556
Um mês antes, a minha madrasta
que tinha sido boa para mim,
em Nakuru, tinha morrido.
em Nakuru, tinha morrido.
06:53
who had been so good to me
back in Nakuru, died first.
back in Nakuru, died first.
115
401420
4019
06:59
Then I came to realize that
after giving birth to four girls,
after giving birth to four girls,
116
407764
5438
Depois, vim a saber que,
depois de ter dado à luz quatro raparigas,
depois de ter dado à luz quatro raparigas,
07:05
my mother had finally
given birth to something
given birth to something
117
413226
3315
a minha mãe, finalmente, tinha dado à luz
o que a podia ter tornado
aceite na comunidade,
aceite na comunidade,
07:08
that could have made her
be accepted into the community --
be accepted into the community --
118
416565
3711
07:12
a baby boy,
119
420300
1547
um rapaz,
07:13
my baby brother.
120
421871
1580
um irmãozinho meu.
07:16
But he, too,
121
424731
1987
Mas também ele
07:18
joined the list of the dead.
122
426742
2612
se juntou à lista dos mortos.
07:23
The most hurting part for me
123
431982
1909
Para mim, o mais doloroso
07:27
was the fact that I wasn't able
to attend my mother's burial.
to attend my mother's burial.
124
435409
3940
foi eu não ter podido
assistir ao funeral da minha mãe.
assistir ao funeral da minha mãe.
07:31
I wasn't allowed.
125
439984
1286
Não mo permitiram.
07:34
They said her family did not find it fit
126
442654
4700
Disseram que a família dela
não achava adequado
não achava adequado
07:39
for her children, who are all girls,
to attend her burial,
to attend her burial,
127
447378
3784
que as filhas dela, todas raparigas,
assistissem ao funeral,
assistissem ao funeral,
07:44
simply because we were girls.
128
452016
1748
só porque eram raparigas.
07:46
They would lament to me and say,
129
454806
2029
Elas chegavam-se ao pé de mim e diziam:
07:49
"We are sorry, Mary, for your loss.
130
457634
1996
"Lamento, Mary, lamento a tua perda.
07:52
We are sorry that your parents
never left behind any children."
never left behind any children."
131
460689
5159
"Lamento que os teus pais
não tenham deixado filhos".
não tenham deixado filhos".
07:59
And I would wonder:
132
467415
1435
E eu pensava:
08:01
What are we?
133
469792
1184
"Então, o que é que nós somos?
08:04
Are we not children?
134
472061
1324
"Não somos filhas?"
08:06
In the mentality of my community,
135
474858
2902
Na mentalidade da minha comunidade,
só contam os rapazes.
08:09
only the boy child counted.
136
477784
1906
08:13
And for that reason,
I knew this was the end of me.
I knew this was the end of me.
137
481419
3287
Por essa razão, eu sabia
que, para mim, era o fim.
que, para mim, era o fim.
08:19
But I was the eldest girl.
138
487606
1636
Mas como eu era a mais velha
08:21
I had to take care of my siblings.
139
489794
1936
tinha que tomar conta das minhas irmãs.
08:23
I had to ensure they went to school.
140
491754
2036
Tinha que garantir que elas iam à escola.
08:26
I was 13 years old.
141
494674
2504
Eu tinha 13 anos.
08:29
How could I have made that happen?
142
497745
2272
Como é que eu podia fazer isso?
08:33
I came back to the camp
to take care of my siblings.
to take care of my siblings.
143
501208
3603
Voltei ao acampamento
para tomar conta das minhas irmãs.
para tomar conta das minhas irmãs.
08:36
I've never felt so stuck.
144
504835
1555
Nunca me sentira tão encurralada.
08:39
But then, one of my aunts, Auntie Okoi,
145
507800
4377
Mas depois, a tia Okol,
uma das minhas tias,
uma das minhas tias,
08:44
decided to take my sisters.
146
512201
1789
decidiu ficar com as minhas irmãs.
08:46
My father sent me money from Juba
for me to go back to school.
for me to go back to school.
147
514643
3349
O meu pai mandou-me dinheiro de Juba
para eu voltar à escola.
para eu voltar à escola.
08:50
Boarding school was heaven,
but it was also so hard.
but it was also so hard.
148
518829
3690
O internato era o paraíso,
mas também era difícil.
mas também era difícil.
08:55
I remember during the visiting days
when parents would come to school,
when parents would come to school,
149
523154
3573
Lembro-me que, nos dias de visita,
quando os pais vão à escola
quando os pais vão à escola
o meu pai não aparecia.
08:58
and my father would miss.
150
526751
1404
09:00
But when he did come,
151
528179
1710
Mas, quando ele apareceu,
09:01
he repeated the same faith in me.
152
529913
1787
repetiu a mesma fé em mim.
09:03
This time he would say,
153
531724
1306
Dessa vez, disse:
09:05
"Mary, you cannot go astray,
154
533054
2709
"Mary, não podes perder-te
09:07
because you are the future
of your siblings."
of your siblings."
155
535787
3202
"porque tu és o futuro das tuas irmãs".
09:12
But then, in 2012,
156
540142
3622
Então, em 2012,
09:15
life took away the only thing
that I was clinging on.
that I was clinging on.
157
543788
3974
a vida roubou-me a única coisa
que me prendia.
que me prendia.
09:20
My father died.
158
548395
1326
O meu pai morreu.
09:23
My grades in school started to collapse,
159
551783
2236
As minhas notas na escola
começaram a baixar
começaram a baixar
09:27
and when I sat for my final
high school exams in 2015,
high school exams in 2015,
160
555643
5981
e, quando fiz os exames finais
do liceu, em 2015,
do liceu, em 2015,
09:33
I was devastated to receive a C grade.
161
561648
3592
fiquei desolada por receber
uma nota medíocre (C).
uma nota medíocre (C).
09:37
OK, I keep telling students in my class,
162
565264
2301
Ok, eu estou sempre a dizer
aos meus alunos:
aos meus alunos:
09:39
"It's not about the A's;
it's about doing your best."
it's about doing your best."
163
567589
3369
"O objetivo não é ter notas altas,
é fazer o vosso melhor".
é fazer o vosso melhor".
09:43
That was not my best.
164
571461
1179
Aquilo não era o meu melhor.
09:45
I was determined.
165
573887
1265
Fiquei determinada.
09:47
I wanted to go back and try again.
166
575176
2380
Eu queria repetir e repetir.
Mas os meus pais tinham desaparecido.
09:50
But my parents were gone.
167
578664
1631
Eu não tinha ninguém
que se preocupasse comigo
que se preocupasse comigo
09:52
I had no one to take care of me,
168
580972
1555
09:54
and I had no one to pay that fee.
169
582551
1894
e não tinha ninguém
que pagasse as propinas.
que pagasse as propinas.
09:56
I felt so hopeless.
170
584863
1519
Sentia-me impotente.
10:00
But then, one of my best friends,
171
588412
2150
Mas uma das minhas melhores amigas,
10:02
a beautiful Kenyan lady, Esther Kaecha,
172
590586
3353
uma bela rapariga queniana,
Esther Kaecha,
Esther Kaecha,
10:05
called me during this devastating moment,
173
593963
2064
ligou-me naquele momento deprimente
10:08
and she was like, "Mary,
you have a strong will.
you have a strong will.
174
596051
3361
e disse-me:
"Mary, tu tens força de vontade.
10:11
And I have a plan,
and it's going to work."
and it's going to work."
175
599436
2249
"E eu tenho um plano
que vai funcionar".
que vai funcionar".
10:14
OK, when you're in those devastating
moments, you accept anything, right?
moments, you accept anything, right?
176
602261
3997
Quando estamos
num momento tão deprimente,
num momento tão deprimente,
aceitamos qualquer coisa, não é?
10:18
So the plan was, she organized
some travel money
some travel money
177
606282
3111
O plano era que ela tinha
arranjado algum dinheiro
arranjado algum dinheiro
10:21
for us to travel to
Anester Victory Girls High School.
Anester Victory Girls High School.
178
609417
3111
para nós irmos para a Escola
Secundária Anestar Victory.
Secundária Anestar Victory.
10:25
I remember that day so well.
179
613262
1431
Lembro-me muito bem desse dia.
10:26
It was raining when we entered
the principal's office.
the principal's office.
180
614717
3457
Estava a chover, quando
entrámos no gabinete do diretor,
entrámos no gabinete do diretor,
10:30
We were shaking like two chickens
that had been rained on,
that had been rained on,
181
618198
3096
Tremíamos como duas galinhas molhadas.
10:33
and we looked at him.
182
621318
1174
Olhámos para ele e ele perguntou:
10:34
He was asking, "What do you want?"
183
622516
1897
"O que é que desejam?"
10:36
And we looked at him with the cat face.
184
624890
2218
Olhámos para ele, com olhos suplicantes
10:39
"We just want to go back to school."
185
627132
2101
"Só queremos voltar para a escola".
10:41
Well, believe it or not,
he not only paid our school fees
he not only paid our school fees
186
629257
4339
Podem não acreditar,
mas ele pagou as nossas propinas
mas ele pagou as nossas propinas
e também os uniformes
10:45
but also our uniform
and pocket money for food.
and pocket money for food.
187
633620
4113
e ainda nos deu dinheiro para a comida.
10:49
Clap for him.
188
637757
1223
Palmas para ele.
10:51
(Applause)
189
639004
1823
(Aplausos)
10:53
When I finished my high school career,
190
641766
2082
Quando terminei o secundário,
10:55
I became the head girl.
191
643872
1533
passei a ser a melhor aluna.
10:57
And when I sat for the KCSE
for a second time,
for a second time,
192
645984
3365
E quando voltei a fazer exame
pela segunda vez,
pela segunda vez,
11:01
I was able to receive a B minus. Clap.
193
649373
2650
consegui arrancar um suficiente (B).
Palmas!
Palmas!
11:04
(Applause)
194
652047
2240
(Aplausos)
11:06
Thank you.
195
654311
1155
Obrigada.
11:07
So I really want to say thank you
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
196
655490
4410
Também queria agradecer
à Anestar Victory, a Mr. Gatimu
à Anestar Victory, a Mr. Gatimu
11:11
and the whole Anester fraternity
for giving me that chance.
for giving me that chance.
197
659924
3683
e a toda a fraternidade de Anestar
por me terem dado aquela hipótese.
por me terem dado aquela hipótese.
11:17
From time to time,
198
665084
1659
De tempos a tempos,
11:18
members of my family will insist
that my sister and I should get married
that my sister and I should get married
199
666767
4803
membros da minha família insistiam
em que as minhas irmãs e eu
devíamos casar
devíamos casar
11:23
so that somebody will take care of us.
200
671594
2098
para haver alguém a tomar conta de nós.
11:26
They will say,
201
674722
1303
Diziam:
11:28
"We have a man for you."
202
676049
1348
"Temos um marido para ti".
11:30
I really hate the fact that people
took us as property rather than children.
took us as property rather than children.
203
678153
5440
Eu odiava que as pessoas
nos considerassem uma propriedade
nos considerassem uma propriedade
em vez de crianças.
11:36
Sometimes they will jokingly say,
204
684092
1995
Por vezes, eles gracejavam, dizendo:
11:38
"You are going to lose your market value
205
686111
2112
"Vais perder o teu valor de mercado,
11:40
the more educated you become."
206
688247
1678
"quanto mais instruída fores".
11:42
But the truth is,
207
690457
1982
A verdade é que
uma mulher instruída é receada
na minha comunidade.
na minha comunidade.
11:44
an educated woman is feared
in my community.
in my community.
208
692463
3429
11:47
But I told them, this is not what I want.
209
695916
1999
Mas eu dizia-lhes
que não era isso que eu queria.
que não era isso que eu queria.
11:51
I don't want to get kids at 16
like my mother did.
like my mother did.
210
699056
2993
Eu não queria ter filhos aos 16 anos,
como acontecera com a minha mãe.
como acontecera com a minha mãe.
11:55
This is not my life.
211
703494
1597
Essa não era a minha vida.
11:57
Even though my sisters
and I are suffering,
and I are suffering,
212
705528
2076
Apesar de as minhas irmãs
e eu estarmos a sofrer,
e eu estarmos a sofrer,
11:59
there's no way we are
heading in that direction.
heading in that direction.
213
707628
2528
não havia hipótese de avançarmos
nessa direção.
nessa direção.
12:02
I refuse to repeat history.
214
710528
2436
Recusava-me a repetir a história.
Raparigas instruídas criam
sociedades iguais e estáveis.
sociedades iguais e estáveis.
12:06
Educating a girl will create
equal and stable societies.
equal and stable societies.
215
714094
5148
(Aplausos)
12:11
And educated refugees will be the hope
216
719266
4303
E refugiadas instruídas serão a esperança
12:15
of rebuilding their countries someday.
217
723593
2865
de, um dia, reconstruírem os seus países.
12:18
Girls and women have
a part to play in this
a part to play in this
218
726956
3753
As raparigas e as mulheres
têm um papel a desempenhar,
têm um papel a desempenhar,
12:22
just as much as men.
219
730733
1821
tal como os homens.
12:24
Well, we have men in my family
that encourage me to move on:
that encourage me to move on:
220
732578
3681
Temos homens na minha família
que me encorajam a seguir em frente:
que me encorajam a seguir em frente:
12:28
my half brothers and also my half sisters.
221
736283
2956
os meus meios-irmãos e também
as minhas meias-irmãs.
as minhas meias-irmãs.
12:32
When I finished my high school career,
222
740726
1918
Quando acabei o secundário,
12:35
I moved my sisters to Nairobi,
where they live with my stepsister.
where they live with my stepsister.
223
743285
5517
fui com as minhas irmãs para Nairobi
onde elas vivem com a minha meia-irmã.
onde elas vivem com a minha meia-irmã.
12:41
They live 17 people in a house.
224
749411
2093
Vivem 17 pessoas numa casa.
12:44
But don't pity us.
225
752138
1195
Mas não tenham pena de nós.
12:45
The most important thing
is that they all get a decent education.
is that they all get a decent education.
226
753935
5428
A coisa mais importante é que todas
tenham uma educação decente.
tenham uma educação decente.
12:53
The winners of today
227
761534
1546
As vencedoras de hoje
12:56
are the losers of yesterday,
228
764090
1907
são as vencidas de ontem
12:58
but who never gave up.
229
766557
1580
que nunca desistiram.
13:00
And that is who we are,
230
768820
1889
É isso que nós somos,
as minhas irmãs e eu.
as minhas irmãs e eu.
13:02
my sisters and I.
231
770733
1393
13:04
And I'm so proud of that.
232
772150
2001
Tenho muito orgulho nisso.
13:06
My biggest investment in life --
233
774175
1781
O meu maior investimento na vida...
13:07
(Applause)
234
775980
1040
(Aplausos)
13:09
is the education of my sisters.
235
777044
2879
é a educação das minhas irmãs.
13:12
Education creates an equal and fair chance
for everyone to make it.
for everyone to make it.
236
780868
4668
O ensino cria uma hipótese
igual e justa para toda a gente.
igual e justa para toda a gente.
13:18
I personally believe education
is not all about the syllabus.
is not all about the syllabus.
237
786128
3291
Eu, pessoalmente, acredito que a instrução
não é apenas o programa,
não é apenas o programa,
13:21
It's about friendship.
238
789841
1347
é também a amizade.
13:23
It's about discovering our talents.
239
791746
2235
Trata-se de descobrir os nossos talentos,
13:26
It's about discovering our destiny.
240
794005
3233
trata-se de descobrir o nosso destino.
13:29
I will, for example, not forget
the joy that I had
the joy that I had
241
797914
2554
Por exemplo, nunca esquecerei
a alegria que tive
a alegria que tive
quando tive lições de canto
na escola, pela primeira vez,
na escola, pela primeira vez,
13:32
when I first had singing
lessons in school,
lessons in school,
242
800492
2238
13:34
which is still a passion of mine.
243
802754
1643
o que ainda hoje é a minha paixão.
13:36
But I wouldn't have gotten that
244
804421
2057
Mas nunca as teria tido
noutro sítio qualquer.
noutro sítio qualquer.
13:38
anywhere else.
245
806502
1257
13:41
As a teacher, I see
my classroom as a laboratory
my classroom as a laboratory
246
809061
4407
Enquanto professora, vejo
a minha turma como um laboratório
a minha turma como um laboratório
13:45
that not only generates
skills and knowledge
skills and knowledge
247
813492
2945
que não só gera competências
e conhecimento
e conhecimento
13:48
but also understanding and hope.
248
816461
2854
como também compreensão e esperança.
13:51
Let's take a tree.
249
819881
1285
Vejam uma árvore.
13:53
A tree may have its branches cut,
250
821894
2045
Podemos cortar os ramos a uma árvore,
13:57
but give it water, and it will
grow new branches.
grow new branches.
251
825022
4429
mas, se lhe dermos água,
ela desenvolverá ramos novos.
ela desenvolverá ramos novos.
14:01
For the child of war,
252
829475
1603
Para as filhas da guerra,
14:03
an education can turn their tears of loss
into a passion for peace.
into a passion for peace.
253
831102
6027
a instrução pode transformar
as lágrimas das perdas
numa paixão pela paz.
numa paixão pela paz.
14:09
And for that reason, I refuse to give up
on a single student in my class.
on a single student in my class.
254
837153
5010
Por isso, recuso a desistir
dum único aluno na minha turma.
dum único aluno na minha turma.
14:14
(Applause)
255
842187
2316
(Aplausos)
14:16
Education heals.
256
844527
1442
A instrução cura.
14:19
The school environment
257
847079
2026
O ambiente da escola
14:21
gives you a focus to focus ahead.
258
849129
3041
dá-nos um foco para seguir em frente.
14:25
Let's take it this way:
259
853245
1323
Pensemos assim:
14:26
when you're busy solving
mathematical equations,
mathematical equations,
260
854592
2463
Quando estamos absortos
a resolver equações de matemática,
a resolver equações de matemática,
14:29
and you are memorizing poetry,
261
857079
2285
ou estamos a decorar poesia,
14:31
you forget the violence
that you witnessed back home.
that you witnessed back home.
262
859388
4071
esquecemos a violência
a que assistimos no nosso país.
a que assistimos no nosso país.
14:35
And that is the power of education.
263
863931
3485
É esse o poder da instrução.
14:39
It creates this place for peace.
264
867440
2850
Cria este lugar para a paz.
14:42
Kakuma is teeming with learners.
265
870856
1969
Kákuma está pejada de aprendizes.
14:44
Over 85,000 students
are enrolled in schools here,
are enrolled in schools here,
266
872849
5177
Há ali mais de 85 000 alunos
matriculados em escolas,
matriculados em escolas,
14:50
which makes up 40 percent
of the refugee population.
of the refugee population.
267
878050
3547
o que consiste em 40%
da população de refugiados.
da população de refugiados.
14:54
It includes children who lost years
of education because of the war back home.
of education because of the war back home.
268
882040
6905
Inclui crianças que perderam
anos de escola
anos de escola
por causa da guerra nos seus países.
15:01
And I want to ask you a question:
269
889584
1895
E pergunto:
15:04
If education is about
building a generation of hope,
building a generation of hope,
