Filmed:

01:05
they fled their homes

And my father,

1217
E meu pai,
01:47
who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
28
95372
2855
ausente na minha infância,
01:50
was doing what other men were doing:
29
98251
2576
fazia o que homens faziam:
01:52
fighting for the country.
30
100851
1727
lutava pelo país.
01:55
He had two wives and many children.

02:02
married to him at the age of 16.
33
110812

02:05
This is simply because my mother
came from a poor background,
34
113588
4022
Porque minha mãe era pobre
02:10
and she had no choice.
35

But that was not all.
41

Não era só isso.
02:35
Planes would drop the spinning

02:39
that chopped off people's limbs.
43

que desmembrava pessoas.
02:41
But the most terrifying thing
for every single parent
44
149435
3276
O mais terrível era os pais
02:44
was to see their children being abducted
and turned into young soldiers.
45

transformadas em soldados.

But yet, we did not feel protected.

Mas não nos sentíamos protegidos.
03:00
She had to flee in search
of a safe place for us.
49

I was four years old,
and my younger sister was two.
50

Tinha quatro anos, e minha
irmã mais nova dois.
03:09
We joined a huge mass of people,
51

2013
Juntamos à uma massa de gente,
03:11
and together we walked
for many agonizing days
52
179304
3916
e juntas andamos por dias
03:15
in search of a secure place.
53
183244
1922
na busca por um lugar seguro.
03:17
But we could barely rest
54
185190
1673
Mal podíamos descansar
03:19
before we were attacked again.
55
187954
2909
porque éramos atacadas.
03:24
I remember my mother was pregnant,
56
192159
2444
Lembro da minha mãe grávida,
03:26
when she would take turns
to carry me and my younger sister.
57
194627
3051
ela fazia turnos entre
carregar minha irmã e eu.
03:30
We finally made it across
the Kenyan border, yes.
58
198362
2874
Finalmente atravessamos
a fronteira da Quênia.
03:33
But that was the longest journey
that I have ever had in my whole life.
59
201887
5147
Foi a jornada mais longa que já tive.
03:40
My feet were raw with blisters.
60
208028
3523
Meu pé era carne viva com bolhas.
03:45
To our surprise,
61
213630
1556
Para nossa surpresa,
03:47
we found other family members
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
62
215210
3311
encontramos outros membros de
família que fugiram do acampamento,
03:50
where you all are today,
63
218545
1667
que vocês estão agora,
03:52
the Kakuma camp.
64
220236
1706
o acampamento Kakuma.
03:53
Now, I want you all to be very quiet
just for a moment.
65
221966
3680
Agora peço silêncio por um momento.
04:00
Do you hear that?
66
228574
1579
Escutaram?
04:04
The sound of silence.
67
232022
3184
O som do silêncio.
04:08
No gunshots.
68
236268
1374
Sem tiroteios.
04:11
Peace, at last.
69
239157
2343
Paz finalmente.
04:14
That was my first memory of this camp.
70
242279
3455
Foi minha primeira memória
deste acampamento.
04:19
When you move from a war zone
71
247154
2353
Quando você sai de uma zona de guerra
04:21
and come to a secure place like Kakuma,
72
249531
2523
e chega a um lugar seguro como Kakuma,
04:24
you've really gone far.
73
252078
1451
você foi longe.
04:27
I only stayed in the camp
for three years, though.
74
255655
2901
Fiquei no acampamento por três anos só.
04:30
My father, who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
75
258580
3064
Meu pai, ausente na minha infância,
04:33
came back into my life.
76
261668
1387
voltou à minha vida.
04:35
And he organized for me
to move with my uncle
77
263697
3389
E organizou para que eu
morasse com o meu tio
04:39
to our family in Nakuru.
78
267110
1560
e sua família em Nakuru.
04:41
There, I found my father's first wife,
79
269328
2443
Lá vi a primeira esposa do meu pai,
04:43
my half sisters and my half brothers.
80
271795
3581
minhas meias-irmãs e irmãos.
04:47
I got enrolled in school.
81
275400
2079
Entrei na escola.
04:49
I remember my first day in school --
I could sing and laugh again --
82
277503
4578
Lembro do meu primeiro dia,
podia cantar e rir de novo,
04:54
and my first set of school
uniforms, you bet.
83
282105
3298
meu primeiro uniforme.
04:58
It was amazing.
84
286317
1361
Foi incrível.
05:01
But then I came to realize
85
289360
2405
Mas aí percebi
05:04
that my uncle did not find it fit
for me to go to school,
86
292622
4262
que meu tio não gostava
que eu fosse à escola,
05:10
simply because I was a girl.
87
298194
2679
porque eu era uma garota.
05:14
My half brothers were his first priority.
88
302649
2941
Meus meios-irmãos eram sua prioridade.
05:18
He would say, "Educating a girl
is a waste of time."
89
306622
3761
Ele falava, "Educar uma garota é
uma perda de tempo."
05:22
And for that reason, I missed
many days of school,
90
310773
4961
Por isso, perdia vários dias de escola,
05:27
because the fees were not paid.
91
315758
1977
porque a conta não era paga.
05:31
My father stepped in
92
319364
1917
Meu pai interferiu
05:33
and organized for me
to go to boarding school.
93
321305
3123
e me levou ao internato.
05:37
I remember the faith that he put in me
over the couple of years to come.
94
325253
4060
Lembro da fé que ele pôs em mim
nos próximos anos.
05:41
He would say, "Education is an animal
that you have to overcome.
95
329337
5663
Ele dizia, "Educação é um animal
que você deve superar.
05:47
With an education, you can survive.
96
335779
3322
Com educação, você sobrevive.
05:51
Education shall be your first husband."
97
339838
4086
Educação será seu primeiro marido."
05:56
And with these words came in
his first big investment.
98
344557
5076
Com estas palavras veio
seu grande investimento.
06:01
I felt lucky!
99
349657
1275
Me senti sortuda!
06:03
But I was missing something:
100
351627
3179
Mas faltava algo:
06:08
my mother.
101
356462
1151
minha mãe.
06:11
My mother had been left
behind in the camp,
102
359064
2491
Ela ficou no acampamento,
06:14
and I had not seen her since I left it.
103
362511
2513
não a vi desde que saí de lá.
06:18
Six years without seeing her
was really long.
104
366197
4619
Seis anos sem ver ela era muito.
06:24
I was alone,
105
372245
1243
Estava sozinha,
06:26
in school,
106
374178
1239
na escola,
06:28
when I heard of her death.
107
376117
1618
quando soube de sua morte.
06:32
I've seen many people back in South Sudan
108
380128
2576
Vi muitas pessoas no Sudão do Sul
06:36
lose their lives.
109
384316
1661
perdendo suas vidas.
06:38
I've heard from neighbors
110
386001
1923
Ouvi de vizinhos
06:39
lose their sons, their husbands,
111
387948
2477
perderem seus filhos, maridos,
06:43
their children.
112
391159
1276
crianças.
06:45
But I never thought that that
would ever come into my life.
113
393104
3469
Mas nunca pensei que aconteceria comigo.
06:49
A month earlier, my stepmother,
114
397840
3556
Um mês antes, minha madrasta,
06:53
who had been so good to me
back in Nakuru, died first.
115
401420
4019
que era tão boa comigo em Nakuru, morreu.
06:59
Then I came to realize that
after giving birth to four girls,
116
407764
5438
Percebi que depois de dar
à luz quatro garotas,
07:05
my mother had finally
given birth to something
117
413226
3315
minha mãe finalmente deu à luz algo
07:08
that could have made her
be accepted into the community --
118
416565
3711
que a faria ser aceita pela comunidade,
07:12
a baby boy,
119
420300
1547
um bebê homem,
07:13
my baby brother.
120
421871
1580
meu irmão.
07:16
But he, too,
121
424731
1987
Mas ele também
07:18
joined the list of the dead.
122
426742
2612
entrou para a lista de mortos.
07:23
The most hurting part for me
123
431982
1909
O que mais dói
07:27
was the fact that I wasn't able
to attend my mother's burial.
124
435409
3940
é não poder ter ido ao
funeral da minha mãe.
07:31
I wasn't allowed.
125
439984
1286
Não fui permitida.
07:34
They said her family did not find it fit
126
442654
4700
Disseram que não era certo
07:39
for her children, who are all girls,
to attend her burial,
127
447378
3784
para suas crianças, todas garotas,
irem ao seu funeral,
07:44
simply because we were girls.
128
452016
1748
só por serem mulheres.
07:46
They would lament to me and say,
129
454806
2029
Me davam condolências e diziam,
07:49
"We are sorry, Mary, for your loss.
130
457634
1996
"Meus pêsames, Mary, pela sua perda.
07:52
We are sorry that your parents
never left behind any children."
131
460689
5159
Sentimos muito que seus pais
não deixaram crias."
07:59
And I would wonder:
132
467415
1435
E me perguntava:
08:01
What are we?
133
469792
1184
O que somos?
08:04
Are we not children?
134
472061
1324
Não somos crianças?
08:06
In the mentality of my community,
135
474858
2902
Na mente da minha comunidade,
08:09
only the boy child counted.
136
477784
1906
só garotos eram crianças.
08:13
And for that reason,
I knew this was the end of me.
137
481419
3287
E, por isso, sabia que era meu fim.
08:19
But I was the eldest girl.
138
487606
1636
Mas eu era a irmã mais velha,
08:21
I had to take care of my siblings.
139
489794
1936
tinha que cuidar das minhas irmãs,
08:23
I had to ensure they went to school.
140
491754
2036
garantir que fossem à escola.
08:26
I was 13 years old.
141
494674
2504
Tinha 13 anos.
08:29
How could I have made that happen?
142
497745
2272
Como eu faria isso?
08:33
I came back to the camp
to take care of my siblings.
143
501208
3603
Voltei ao acampamento para cuidar delas.
08:36
I've never felt so stuck.
144
504835
1555
Nunca me senti tão presa.
08:39
But then, one of my aunts, Auntie Okoi,
145
507800
4377
Até que uma tia minha, Tia Okoi,
08:44
decided to take my sisters.
146
512201
1789
pegou minhas irmãs.
08:46
My father sent me money from Juba
for me to go back to school.
147
514643
3349
Meu pai mandou dinheiro de Juba
para que eu voltasse à escola.
08:50
Boarding school was heaven,
but it was also so hard.
148
518829
3690
Internato era o céu, mas era difícil.
08:55
I remember during the visiting days
when parents would come to school,
149
523154
3573
Lembro dos dias de visita
que os pais iam à escola,
08:58
and my father would miss.
150
526751
1404
e meu pai faltava.
09:00
But when he did come,
151
528179
1710
Mas quando ele ia,
09:01
he repeated the same faith in me.
152
529913
1787
sempre falava o mesmo para mim.
09:03
This time he would say,
153
531724
1306
Dizia,
09:05
"Mary, you cannot go astray,
154
533054
2709
"Mary, não se perca,
09:07
because you are the future
of your siblings."
155
535787
3202
você é o futuro das suas irmãs."
09:12
But then, in 2012,
156
540142
3622
Mas, em 2012,
09:15
life took away the only thing
that I was clinging on.
157
543788
3974
a vida me tirou a única
coisa que me apeguei.
09:20
My father died.
158
548395
1326
Meu pai morreu.
09:23
My grades in school started to collapse,
159
551783
2236
Minhas notas na escola despencaram,
09:27
and when I sat for my final
high school exams in 2015,
160
555643
5981
quando fui fazer meus
exames finais em 2015,
09:33
I was devastated to receive a C grade.
161
561648
3592
fiquei devastada ao receber um C.
09:37
OK, I keep telling students in my class,
162
565264
2301
Sempre digo aos meus estudantes,
09:39
"It's not about the A's;
it's about doing your best."
163
567589
3369
"Não é sobre A's, é sobre
fazer o seu melhor."
Mas não foi o meu melhor.
09:43
That was not my best.
164
571461
1179
09:45
I was determined.
165
573887
1265
Estava determinada.
09:47
I wanted to go back and try again.
166
575176
2380
Queria voltar e tentar de novo.
09:50
But my parents were gone.
167
578664
1631
Mas meus pais se foram.
Não tinha ninguém para me cuidar,
09:52
I had no one to take care of me,
168
580972
1555
09:54
and I had no one to pay that fee.
169
582551
1894
nem para pagar a taxa.
09:56
I felt so hopeless.
170
584863
1519
Me senti sem esperança.
10:00
But then, one of my best friends,
171
588412
2150
Mas, uma das minhas melhores amigas,
10:02
a beautiful Kenyan lady, Esther Kaecha,
172
590586
3353
a linda Queniana, Esther Kaecha,
10:05
called me during this devastating moment,
173
593963
2064
me ligou neste momento devastador,
10:08
and she was like, "Mary,
you have a strong will.
174
596051
3361
e disse, "Mary, você tem muita dedicação
10:11
And I have a plan,
and it's going to work."
175
599436
2249
e tenho um plano que vai funcionar."
10:14
OK, when you're in those devastating
moments, you accept anything, right?
176
602261
3997
Nestes momentos devastadores
você aceita qualquer coisa, não é?
10:18
So the plan was, she organized
some travel money
177
606282
3111
O plano era: ela arranjou uma grana
10:21
for us to travel to
Anester Victory Girls High School.
178
609417
3111
para viajarmos à escola de
meninas de Anester Victory.
10:25
I remember that day so well.
179
613262
1431
Me lembro bem daquele dia.
10:26
It was raining when we entered
the principal's office.
180
614717
3457
Chovia quando entramos na sala do diretor.
10:30
We were shaking like two chickens
that had been rained on,
181
618198
3096
Tremíamos como galinhas na chuva,
10:33
and we looked at him.
182
621318
1174
e olhamos para ele.
10:34
He was asking, "What do you want?"
183
622516
1897
Perguntou, "O que vocês querem?"
10:36
And we looked at him with the cat face.
184
624890
2218
Demos aquele olhar de piedade.
10:39
"We just want to go back to school."
185
627132
2101
"Queremos voltar para a escola."
10:41
Well, believe it or not,
he not only paid our school fees
186
629257
4339
Acredita ou não, ele não só
pagou nossas taxas da escola,
10:45
but also our uniform
and pocket money for food.
187
633620
4113
como também nosso uniforme e comida.
10:49
Clap for him.
188
637757
1223
Aplausos para ele.
10:51
(Applause)
189
639004
1823
(Aplausos)
10:53
When I finished my high school career,
190
641766
2082
Quando terminei minha carreira na escola,
10:55
I became the head girl.
191
643872
1533
Virei uma líder.
10:57
And when I sat for the KCSE
for a second time,
192
645984
3365
E quando fui fazer o exame
pela segunda vez,
11:01
I was able to receive a B minus. Clap.
193
649373
2650
tirei um B- . Aplausos.
11:04
(Applause)
194
652047
2240
(Aplausos)
11:06
Thank you.
195
654311
1155
Obrigada.
11:07
So I really want to say thank you
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
196
655490
4410
Quero agradecer muito à
Anester Victory, Sr. Gatimu
11:11
and the whole Anester fraternity
for giving me that chance.
197
659924
3683
e toda a fraternidade de Anester
por terem me dado essa chance.
11:17
From time to time,
198
665084
1659
De tempos em tempos,
11:18
members of my family will insist
that my sister and I should get married
199
666767
4803
familiares insistem que
eu e minha irmã casassem
11:23
so that somebody will take care of us.
200
671594
2098
para alguém cuidar de nós.
11:26
They will say,
201
674722
1303
Eles diziam,
11:28
"We have a man for you."
202
676049
1348
"Temos um homem para você."
11:30
I really hate the fact that people
took us as property rather than children.
203
678153
5440
Odeio o fato que pessoas nos olhavam
como propriedade e não como crianças.
11:36
Sometimes they will jokingly say,
204
684092
1995
As vezes brincavam,
11:38
"You are going to lose your market value
205
686111
2112
"Você perderá seu valor no mercado
11:40
the more educated you become."
206
688247
1678
se for mais educada."
11:42
But the truth is,
207
690457
1982
A verdade é,
11:44
an educated woman is feared
in my community.
208
692463
3429
uma mulher educada é temida
na minha comunidade.
11:47
But I told them, this is not what I want.
209
695916
1999
Disse a eles, não é isso que quero.
11:51
I don't want to get kids at 16
like my mother did.
210
699056
2993
Não quero crianças aos 16 como minha mãe.
11:55
This is not my life.
211
703494
1597
Não é minha vida.
11:57
Even though my sisters
and I are suffering,
212
705528
2076
Mesmo que minhas irmãs e eu soframos,
11:59
there's no way we are
heading in that direction.
213
707628
2528
nunca iremos à essa direção.
12:02
I refuse to repeat history.
214
710528
2436
Recuso a repetir a história.
12:06
Educating a girl will create
equal and stable societies.
215
714094
5148
Educar uma garota irá criar
sociedades estáveis e iguais.
12:11
And educated refugees will be the hope
216
719266
4303
E refugiados educados serão a esperança
12:15
of rebuilding their countries someday.
217
723593
2865
na reconstrução de seus países.
12:18
Girls and women have
a part to play in this
218
726956
3753
Mulheres fazem parte disto
12:22
just as much as men.
219
730733
1821
tanto quanto os homens.
12:24
Well, we have men in my family
that encourage me to move on:
220
732578
3681
Tenho homens na família que
me encorajam a seguir em frente:
12:28
my half brothers and also my half sisters.
221
736283
2956
meus meios-irmãos, meias-irmãs também.
12:32
When I finished my high school career,
222
740726
1918
Quando terminei o colegial,
12:35
I moved my sisters to Nairobi,
where they live with my stepsister.
223
743285
5517
levei minhas irmãs à Nairobi, onde
moram com minha meia-irmã.
12:41
They live 17 people in a house.
224
749411
2093
17 pessoas moram em uma casa.
12:44
But don't pity us.
225
752138
1195
Não tenha pena de nós.
12:45
The most important thing
is that they all get a decent education.
226
753935
5428
O mais importante é que todos
têm uma educação de qualidade.
12:53
The winners of today
227
761534
1546
Os vencedores de hoje
12:56
are the losers of yesterday,
228
764090
1907
são os perdedores de ontem
12:58
but who never gave up.
229
766557
1580
que nunca desistiram.
13:00
And that is who we are,
230
768820
1889
E assim somos,
13:02
my sisters and I.
231
770733
1393
minhas irmãs e eu.
13:04
And I'm so proud of that.
232
772150
2001
Tenho muito orgulho disso.
13:06
My biggest investment in life --
233
774175
1781
Meu maior investimento -
13:07
(Applause)
234
775980
1040
(Aplausos)
13:09
is the education of my sisters.
235
777044
2879
- é a educação das minhas irmãs.
13:12
Education creates an equal and fair chance
for everyone to make it.
236
780868
4668
Educação cria chances justas
e iguais para todos.
13:18
I personally believe education
is not all about the syllabus.
237
786128
3291
Pessoalmente acredito que
educação não é só estudos.
13:21
It's about friendship.
238
789841
1347
São as amizades,
13:23
It's about discovering our talents.
239
791746
2235
descobrir nossos talentos,
13:26
It's about discovering our destiny.
240
794005
3233
descobrir nosso destino.
13:29
I will, for example, not forget
the joy that I had
241
797914
2554
Não esquecerei da alegria que tive
13:32
when I first had singing
lessons in school,
242
800492
2238
quando tive as primeiras aulas de canto,
13:34
which is still a passion of mine.
243
802754
1643
que ainda é uma paixão minha.
13:36
But I wouldn't have gotten that
244
804421
2057
Que não teria obtido
13:38
anywhere else.
245
806502
1257
em outro lugar.
13:41
As a teacher, I see
my classroom as a laboratory
246
809061
4407
Como professora, vejo minha sala
como um laboratório
13:45
that not only generates
skills and knowledge
247
813492
2945
que não só gera habilidade e conhecimento
13:48
but also understanding and hope.
248
816461
2854
como também compreensão e esperança.
13:51
Let's take a tree.
249
819881
1285
Peguemos uma árvore.
13:53
A tree may have its branches cut,
250
821894
2045
Ela pode ter seus galhos cortados,
13:57
but give it water, and it will
grow new branches.
251
825022
4429
mas dê-lhe água, e ela terá novos galhos.
14:01
For the child of war,
252
829475
1603
Para uma criança na guerra,
14:03
an education can turn their tears of loss
into a passion for peace.
253
831102
6027
a educação muda seus choros
de perda em busca pela paz.
14:09
And for that reason, I refuse to give up
on a single student in my class.
254
837153
5010
Por isso, recuso a desistir
dos meus estudantes.
14:14
(Applause)
255
842187
2316
(Aplausos)
14:16
Education heals.
256
844527
1442
Educação cura.
14:19
The school environment
257
847079
2026
O ambiente escolar
14:21
gives you a focus to focus ahead.
258
849129
3041
te ajuda a seguir em frente.
14:25
Let's take it this way:
259
853245
1323
Pense assim:
14:26
when you're busy solving
mathematical equations,
260
854592
2463
quando estiver ocupado com
equações matemáticas,
14:29
and you are memorizing poetry,
261
857079
2285
e está decorando poesias,
14:31
you forget the violence
that you witnessed back home.
262
859388
4071
você esquece da violência
que presenciou em casa.
14:35
And that is the power of education.
263
863931
3485
Esse é o poder da educação,
14:39
It creates this place for peace.
264
867440
2850
cria um espaço para a paz.
14:42
Kakuma is teeming with learners.
265
870856
1969
Kakuma está repleta de estudantes.
14:44
Over 85,000 students
are enrolled in schools here,
266
872849
5177
Mais de 85 mil estão em escolas,
14:50
which makes up 40 percent
of the refugee population.
267
878050
3547
que é 40 por cento da população refugiada,
14:54
It includes children who lost years
of education because of the war back home.
268
882040
6905
que inclui crianças que perderam
anos de educação por causa da guerra.
15:01
And I want to ask you a question:
269
889584
1895
Te pergunto:
15:04
If education is about
building a generation of hope,
270
892568
4354
se educação é criar uma
geração de esperança,
15:09
why are there 120 students
packed in my classroom?
271
897754
4644
por que têm 120 estudantes na minha sala?
15:16
Why is it that only six percent
of the primary school students
272
904288
4019
Por que só seis por cento
dos estudantes do primário
15:20
are making it to high school,
273
908331
1736
passam para o colégio
15:22
simply because we do not have
enough places for them?
274
910091
3663
por que não temos espaço para eles?
15:26
And why is it that only one percent
of the secondary school graduates
275
914376
5059
E por que só um por cento dos
formandos do ensino médio
15:31
are making it to university?
276
919459
1661
chegam às faculdades?
15:34
I began by saying that I am a teacher.
277
922458
2375
Respondo dizendo que sou uma professora.
15:37
But once again, I have become a student.
278
925692
3318
Mas novamente virei uma estudante.
15:42
In March, I moved to Rwanda
279
930247
2066
Em março, fui para Ruanda
15:45
on a scholarship program
called "Bridge2Rwanda."
280
933192
3583
ir em um programa escolar
chamado "Bridge2Rwanda".
15:49
It prepares scholars for universities.
281
937503
2988
Prepara estudantes para à faculdade.
15:53
They are able to get a chance to compete
for universities abroad.
282
941173
4350
São capazes de tentarem
faculdades de todo o mundo.
15:57
I am now having teachers
telling me what to do,
283
945961
2811
Agora tenho professores
me dizendo o que fazer,
16:00
instead of the other way round.
284
948796
2049
e não o contrário.
16:02
People are once again investing in me.
285
950869
3638
Novamente tenho pessoas investindo em mim.
16:07
So I want to ask you all
to invest in young refugees.
286
955587
4541
Peço a todos que invistam
nos jovens refugiados.
16:12
Think of the tree
that we mentioned earlier.
287
960818
2276
Pense na árvore que falei antes.
16:15
We are the generation to plant it,
288
963995
2664
Somos a geração a se plantar,
16:19
so that the next generation can water it,
289
967422
3488
para que a próxima a regue
16:23
and the one that follows
will enjoy the shade.
290
971498
4096
e a próxima aproveite a sombra.
16:28
They will reap the benefits.
291
976360
1882
Eles colherão os benefícios.
16:31
And the greatest benefit of them all
292
979016
2441
e o maior deles
16:34
is an education that will last.
293
982263
3219
é a educação que persistirá.
16:38
Thank you.
294
986084
1230
Obrigada.
