01:05
they fled their homes

01:43
The war came when I was still a baby.
26
91063
2074
Ben daha bebekken savaş çıkmıştı.
01:46
And my father,
27
94131
1217
Çocukluğumun çoğunda
01:47
who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
28
95372
2855
orada olmayan babam,
01:50
was doing what other men were doing:
29
98251
2576
diğer erkeklerin yaptığını yapıyordu:
01:52
fighting for the country.
30
100851
1727
Ülkesi için savaşıyordu.
01:55
He had two wives and many children.
31
103283
3120
İki eşi ve birçok çocuğu vardı.
02:00
My mother was his second wife,
32
108459

Annem babamın ikinci eşiydi,
02:02
married to him at the age of 16.
33
110812
2279
babamla on altı yaşında evlenmişti.
02:05
This is simply because my mother
came from a poor background,
came from a poor background,
34
113588
4022
Bunun sebebi annemin
fakir bir geçmişi olması
fakir bir geçmişi olması
02:10
and she had no choice.
35
118279
1800
ve başka bir seçeneğinin olmamasıydı.
02:12
My father, on the other hand, was rich.
36
120103
2942
Diğer bir yandan babam zengindi.
02:15
He had many cows.
37
123069
1333
Bir sürü ineği vardı.
02:18
Gunshots were the order of the day.
38
126987
3187
Gün, silah sesleri ile geçerdi.
02:24
My community was constantly under attack.
39
132713
2892
Topluluğum sürekli saldırı altındaydı.
02:28
Communities would fight each other
as they took water along the Nile.
as they took water along the Nile.
40
136526
4640
Nil Nehri'nin kenarından su alırken
topluluklar sürekli kavga ederdi.
topluluklar sürekli kavga ederdi.
02:33
But that was not all.
41
141190
1292
Fakat hepsi bu değildi.
02:35
Planes would drop the spinning
and terrifying bombs
and terrifying bombs
42
143257
3904
Uçaklar, insanların uzuvlarını koparan,
02:39
that chopped off people's limbs.
43
147185
2226
dönüp duran ve korkutucu
bombalar atardı.
bombalar atardı.
02:41
But the most terrifying thing
for every single parent
for every single parent
44
149435
3276
Ama ebeveynlerin göreceği en korkunç şey
02:44
was to see their children being abducted
and turned into young soldiers.
and turned into young soldiers.
45
152735
6214
çocuklarının zorla alıkoyulup
askere dönüştürülmesiydi.
askere dönüştürülmesiydi.
02:51
My mother dug a trench
46
159877
2321
Annem bir hendek kazdı
02:54
that soon became our home.
47
162222
2149
ve sonunda bu hendek evimiz oldu.
02:57
But yet, we did not feel protected.
48
165150
2353
Ama hala güvende hissetmiyorduk.
03:00
She had to flee in search
of a safe place for us.
of a safe place for us.
49
168455
3950
Bize güvenli bir yer bulmak için
yanımızdan ayrıldı.
yanımızdan ayrıldı.
03:04
I was four years old,
and my younger sister was two.
and my younger sister was two.
50
172429
3422
Ben dört yaşındaydım,
kız kardeşim ise iki yaşındaydı.
kız kardeşim ise iki yaşındaydı.
03:09
We joined a huge mass of people,
51
177267
2013
Kalabalık bir insan topluluğuna katılıp
03:11
and together we walked
for many agonizing days
for many agonizing days
52
179304
3916
daha güvenli bir yer bulmak için
03:15
in search of a secure place.
53
183244
1922
günlerce acı dolu bir yürüyüşe katıldık.
03:17
But we could barely rest
54
185190
1673
Daha dinlenmeye vakit bulamamışken
03:19
before we were attacked again.
55
187954
2909
saldırılar tekrar başladı.
03:24
I remember my mother was pregnant,
56
192159
2444
Bizi kucağında sırayla taşırken
03:26
when she would take turns
to carry me and my younger sister.
to carry me and my younger sister.
57
194627
3051
annemin hamile olduğunu hatırlıyorum.
03:30
We finally made it across
the Kenyan border, yes.
the Kenyan border, yes.
58
198362
2874
En sonunda Kenya sınırını geçtik.
03:33
But that was the longest journey
that I have ever had in my whole life.
that I have ever had in my whole life.
59
201887
5147
Fakat hayatımda yaptığım
en uzun yolculuktu.
en uzun yolculuktu.
03:40
My feet were raw with blisters.
60
208028
3523
Ayaklarım su toplamıştı.
03:45
To our surprise,
61
213630
1556
Sürprizimiz ise,
03:47
we found other family members
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
who had fled into the camp earlier on,
62
215210
3311
şu anda bulunduğunuz
Kakuma kampına bizden
daha önce gelmiş
daha önce gelmiş
03:50
where you all are today,
63
218545
1667
03:52
the Kakuma camp.
64
220236
1706
aile üyelerini bulmaktı.
03:53
Now, I want you all to be very quiet
just for a moment.
just for a moment.
65
221966
3680
Şimdi, bir anlığına çok sessiz
olmanızı istiyorum.
olmanızı istiyorum.
04:00
Do you hear that?
66
228574
1579
Duyuyor musunuz?
04:04
The sound of silence.
67
232022
3184
Sessizliğin sesi.
04:08
No gunshots.
68
236268
1374
Silah sesleri yok.
04:11
Peace, at last.
69
239157
2343
Sonunda, biraz huzur.
04:14
That was my first memory of this camp.
70
242279
3455
Bu benim kamptan ilk anımdı.
04:19
When you move from a war zone
71
247154
2353
Savaş alanından taşınıp
04:21
and come to a secure place like Kakuma,
72
249531
2523
Kakuma gibi güvenli bir yere gelmişseniz
çok uzun bir yol katetmişsinizdir.
04:24
you've really gone far.
73
252078
1451
04:27
I only stayed in the camp
for three years, though.
for three years, though.
74
255655
2901
Aslında bu kampta
sadece üç yıl kaldım.
sadece üç yıl kaldım.
04:30
My father, who had been absent
in most of my early childhood,
in most of my early childhood,
75
258580
3064
Çocukluğumun çoğunda
yanımda olmayan babam
yanımda olmayan babam
04:33
came back into my life.
76
261668
1387
bu sefer yanımdaydı.
04:35
And he organized for me
to move with my uncle
to move with my uncle
77
263697
3389
Beni, amcamla birlikte
Nakuru'daki ailemizin yanına
dönmek için gönderdi.
dönmek için gönderdi.
04:39
to our family in Nakuru.
78
267110
1560
04:41
There, I found my father's first wife,
79
269328
2443
Orada babamın ilk eşini
04:43
my half sisters and my half brothers.
80
271795
3581
ve üvey kardeşlerimi buldum.
04:47
I got enrolled in school.
81
275400
2079
Okula kayıt edildim.
04:49
I remember my first day in school --
I could sing and laugh again --
I could sing and laugh again --
82
277503
4578
Okuldaki ilk günümü hatırlıyorum--
Tekrar gülüp şarkı söyleyebiliyordum--
Tekrar gülüp şarkı söyleyebiliyordum--
04:54
and my first set of school
uniforms, you bet.
uniforms, you bet.
83
282105
3298
Okul formamı hatırlıyorum.
04:58
It was amazing.
84
286317
1361
Harikaydı.
05:01
But then I came to realize
85
289360
2405
Fakat sonradan anladım ki
05:04
that my uncle did not find it fit
for me to go to school,
for me to go to school,
86
292622
4262
kız olduğum içim amcam okula gitmemi
05:10
simply because I was a girl.
87
298194
2679
uygun bulmuyordu.
05:14
My half brothers were his first priority.
88
302649
2941
Üvey erkek kardeşlerim onun
için öncelikliydi.
için öncelikliydi.
05:18
He would say, "Educating a girl
is a waste of time."
is a waste of time."
89
306622
3761
''Kızları eğitmek zaman kaybı.'' derdi.
05:22
And for that reason, I missed
many days of school,
many days of school,
90
310773
4961
Bu yüzden çoğu zaman okula gitmedim
05:27
because the fees were not paid.
91
315758
1977
çünkü harçlar ödenmiyordu.
05:31
My father stepped in
92
319364
1917
Babam devreye girdi
05:33
and organized for me
to go to boarding school.
to go to boarding school.
93
321305
3123
ve beni yatılı okula gönderdi.
05:37
I remember the faith that he put in me
over the couple of years to come.
over the couple of years to come.
94
325253
4060
Sonraki bir kaç yılda bana
ne kadar inandığını gördüm.
ne kadar inandığını gördüm.
05:41
He would say, "Education is an animal
that you have to overcome.
that you have to overcome.
95
329337
5663
Bana ''Eğitim üstesinden
gelmen gereken bir hayvandır.
gelmen gereken bir hayvandır.
05:47
With an education, you can survive.
96
335779
3322
Eğitim ile hayatta kalırsın.
05:51
Education shall be your first husband."
97
339838
4086
Eğitim senin ilk eşin olacak.'' derdi.
05:56
And with these words came in
his first big investment.
his first big investment.
98
344557
5076
Bu sözler babamın en büyük
yatırımıyla söylenmişti.
yatırımıyla söylenmişti.
06:01
I felt lucky!
99
349657
1275
Şanslı hissettim!
06:03
But I was missing something:
100
351627
3179
Fakat bir şeyi özlüyordum:
06:08
my mother.
101
356462
1151
annemi.
06:11
My mother had been left
behind in the camp,
behind in the camp,
102
359064
2491
Annem kampta kalmıştı
06:14
and I had not seen her since I left it.
103
362511
2513
ve o zamandan beri onu görmüyordum.
06:18
Six years without seeing her
was really long.
was really long.
104
366197
4619
Onu görmeden altı yıl geçirmek
çok uzun gelmişti.
çok uzun gelmişti.
06:24
I was alone,
105
372245
1243
Yalnızdım,
06:26
in school,
106
374178
1239
onun öldüğünü duyduğumda
06:28
when I heard of her death.
107
376117
1618
okuldaydım.
06:32
I've seen many people back in South Sudan
108
380128
2576
Güney Sudan'dan tanıdığım
ve hayatlarını kaybeden
ve hayatlarını kaybeden
06:36
lose their lives.
109
384316
1661
birçok insan var.
06:38
I've heard from neighbors
110
386001
1923
Komşularımdan, oğullarını,
06:39
lose their sons, their husbands,
111
387948
2477
eşlerini, çocuklarını
06:43
their children.
112
391159
1276
kaybettiklerini duydum.
06:45
But I never thought that that
would ever come into my life.
would ever come into my life.
113
393104
3469
Ama bunu benimde yaşayacağımı
hiç düşünmemiştim.
hiç düşünmemiştim.
06:49
A month earlier, my stepmother,
114
397840
3556
O zamandan bir ay önce,
06:53
who had been so good to me
back in Nakuru, died first.
back in Nakuru, died first.
115
401420
4019
Nakuru'da bana çok iyi davranan
üvey annem öldü.
üvey annem öldü.
06:59
Then I came to realize that
after giving birth to four girls,
after giving birth to four girls,
116
407764
5438
Sonra şunu fark ettim: dört kız
çocuk dünyaya getirdikten sonra
çocuk dünyaya getirdikten sonra
07:05
my mother had finally
given birth to something
given birth to something
117
413226
3315
toplumda kabul görmesi için gereken
07:08
that could have made her
be accepted into the community --
be accepted into the community --
118
416565
3711
annemin doğum yapmasıydı;
07:12
a baby boy,
119
420300
1547
bir erkek bebeğe,
07:13
my baby brother.
120
421871
1580
küçük erkek kardeşime.
07:16
But he, too,
121
424731
1987
Fakat o da
07:18
joined the list of the dead.
122
426742
2612
ölüm listesine katılmıştı.
07:23
The most hurting part for me
123
431982
1909
Ama benim için en yıkıcı şey
07:27
was the fact that I wasn't able
to attend my mother's burial.
to attend my mother's burial.
124
435409
3940
annemin cenaze törenine katılamamamdı.
07:31
I wasn't allowed.
125
439984
1286
İzin vermemişlerdi.
07:34
They said her family did not find it fit
126
442654
4700
Bize dedikler ki sadece kız olduğumuz için
07:39
for her children, who are all girls,
to attend her burial,
to attend her burial,
127
447378
3784
annemin ailesi, kız çocuklarının
cenazeye katılmasını
cenazeye katılmasını
07:44
simply because we were girls.
128
452016
1748
uygun bulmuyormuş.
07:46
They would lament to me and say,
129
454806
2029
Yas tuttular,
07:49
"We are sorry, Mary, for your loss.
130
457634
1996
''Kaybın için üzgünüz Mary.
07:52
We are sorry that your parents
never left behind any children."
never left behind any children."
131
460689
5159
Ebeveynlerin geride hiç çocuk bırakmadığı
için üzgünüz.'' dediler.
için üzgünüz.'' dediler.
07:59
And I would wonder:
132
467415
1435
Şunu merak ettim:
08:01
What are we?
133
469792
1184
"Biz neyiz?
08:04
Are we not children?
134
472061
1324
Çocuk değil miyiz?"
08:06
In the mentality of my community,
135
474858
2902
Benim topluluğumun zihniyetinde
08:09
only the boy child counted.
136
477784
1906
sadece erkek çocuklar çocuk sayılır.
08:13
And for that reason,
I knew this was the end of me.
I knew this was the end of me.
137
481419
3287
Bu yüzden, sonumun geldiğini biliyordum.
08:19
But I was the eldest girl.
138
487606
1636
En büyük ben olduğum için
08:21
I had to take care of my siblings.
139
489794
1936
kardeşlerime bakmam gerekiyordu.
08:23
I had to ensure they went to school.
140
491754
2036
Okula gittiklerinden
emin olmak zorundaydım.
emin olmak zorundaydım.
08:26
I was 13 years old.
141
494674
2504
On üç yaşındaydım.
08:29
How could I have made that happen?
142
497745
2272
Bunu nasıl gerçekleştirirdim?
08:33
I came back to the camp
to take care of my siblings.
to take care of my siblings.
143
501208
3603
Kardeşlerime bakmak için
kampa geri döndüm.
kampa geri döndüm.
08:36
I've never felt so stuck.
144
504835
1555
Hiç bu kadar sıkışmış
hissetmemiştim.
hissetmemiştim.
08:39
But then, one of my aunts, Auntie Okoi,
145
507800
4377
Fakat sonra teyzelerimden biri olan
08:44
decided to take my sisters.
146
512201
1789
Auntie Okoi kız kardeşlerimi aldı.
08:46
My father sent me money from Juba
for me to go back to school.
for me to go back to school.
147
514643
3349
Babam okula devam etmem için
Juba'dan para yolladı.
Juba'dan para yolladı.
08:50
Boarding school was heaven,
but it was also so hard.
but it was also so hard.
148
518829
3690
Yatılı okul cennet gibiydi
ama bir yandan da zordu.
ama bir yandan da zordu.
08:55
I remember during the visiting days
when parents would come to school,
when parents would come to school,
149
523154
3573
Anne ve babaların okula geldiği
ziyaret günlerini hatırlıyorum,
ziyaret günlerini hatırlıyorum,
babam kaçırırdı.
08:58
and my father would miss.
150
526751
1404
09:00
But when he did come,
151
528179
1710
Geldiğindeyse
aynı şekilde bana inanmaya
devam ederdi.
devam ederdi.
09:01
he repeated the same faith in me.
152
529913
1787
09:03
This time he would say,
153
531724
1306
Bir sefer
09:05
"Mary, you cannot go astray,
154
533054
2709
''Mary hata yapamazsın çünkü
09:07
because you are the future
of your siblings."
of your siblings."
155
535787
3202
kardeşlerinin geleceği sensin.'' demişti.
09:12
But then, in 2012,
156
540142
3622
Sonra 2012 yıllında,
09:15
life took away the only thing
that I was clinging on.
that I was clinging on.
157
543788
3974
hayat tek tutunduğum şeyi
elimden almıştı.
elimden almıştı.
09:20
My father died.
158
548395
1326
Babam öldü.
09:23
My grades in school started to collapse,
159
551783
2236
Okulda notlarım kötüleşmeye başladı
09:27
and when I sat for my final
high school exams in 2015,
high school exams in 2015,
160
555643
5981
ve 2015 yılında son lise sınavlarına girip
09:33
I was devastated to receive a C grade.
161
561648
3592
C aldığımda yıkılmıştım.
09:37
OK, I keep telling students in my class,
162
565264
2301
Sınıfımdaki çocuklara söyleyip dururum,
09:39
"It's not about the A's;
it's about doing your best."
it's about doing your best."
163
567589
3369
''Olay A almakla alakalı değil
elinizden gelenin en iyisini yapmak.''
elinizden gelenin en iyisini yapmak.''
Bu benim elimden gelenin
en iyisi değildi.
en iyisi değildi.
09:43
That was not my best.
164
571461
1179
09:45
I was determined.
165
573887
1265
Kararlıydım.
09:47
I wanted to go back and try again.
166
575176
2380
Geri dönmeyi ve tekrar etmeyi istedim.
09:50
But my parents were gone.
167
578664
1631
Fakat annem babam ölmüştü.
09:52
I had no one to take care of me,
168
580972
1555
Benimle ilgilenecek kimse yoktu
09:54
and I had no one to pay that fee.
169
582551
1894
ve harç paramı ödeyecek kimse yoktu.
09:56
I felt so hopeless.
170
584863
1519
Umutsuz hissettim.
10:00
But then, one of my best friends,
171
588412
2150
Fakat sonra en iyi
arkadaşlarımdan biri olan
arkadaşlarımdan biri olan
10:02
a beautiful Kenyan lady, Esther Kaecha,
172
590586
3353
güzel Kenyalı bir kadın Ester Kaecha,
10:05
called me during this devastating moment,
173
593963
2064
bu umut yıkıcı zamanda beni aradı
10:08
and she was like, "Mary,
you have a strong will.
you have a strong will.
174
596051
3361
ve ''Mary çok güçlü bir iraden var.
10:11
And I have a plan,
and it's going to work."
and it's going to work."
175
599436
2249
Bir planım var ve işe yarayacak'' dedi.
10:14
OK, when you're in those devastating
moments, you accept anything, right?
moments, you accept anything, right?
176
602261
3997
Böyle anlarda her şeyi
kabul edersiniz, değil mi?
kabul edersiniz, değil mi?
10:18
So the plan was, she organized
some travel money
some travel money
177
606282
3111
Plan şuydu;
Anester Zafer Kız Lisesi'ne
gidebilmemiz için para biriktirmişti.
gidebilmemiz için para biriktirmişti.
10:21
for us to travel to
Anester Victory Girls High School.
Anester Victory Girls High School.
178
609417
3111
10:25
I remember that day so well.
179
613262
1431
O günü çok iyi hatırlıyorum.
10:26
It was raining when we entered
the principal's office.
the principal's office.
180
614717
3457
Müdürün odasına girdiğimizde
yağmur yağıyordu.
yağmur yağıyordu.
10:30
We were shaking like two chickens
that had been rained on,
that had been rained on,
181
618198
3096
Üstlerine yağmur yağmış
iki tavuk gibi duruyorduk
iki tavuk gibi duruyorduk
10:33
and we looked at him.
182
621318
1174
ve adama baktık.
10:34
He was asking, "What do you want?"
183
622516
1897
''Ne istiyorsunuz?'' diye sordu.
10:36
And we looked at him with the cat face.
184
624890
2218
Ona baktık.
10:39
"We just want to go back to school."
185
627132
2101
''Okula geri dönmek istiyoruz.''
10:41
Well, believe it or not,
he not only paid our school fees
he not only paid our school fees
186
629257
4339
İster inanın ister inanmayın ama
sadece harçlarımızı değil
sadece harçlarımızı değil
10:45
but also our uniform
and pocket money for food.
and pocket money for food.
187
633620
4113
ayrıca formamızın parasını
ve yemek için cep harçlığımızı verdi.
ve yemek için cep harçlığımızı verdi.
10:49
Clap for him.
188
637757
1223
Onu alkışlayalım.
10:51
(Applause)
189
639004
1823
(Alkış)
10:53
When I finished my high school career,
190
641766
2082
Lise eğitimimi bitirdiğimde
10:55
I became the head girl.
191
643872
1533
okul temsilcisi oldum.
10:57
And when I sat for the KCSE
for a second time,
for a second time,
192
645984
3365
KCSE için ikinci denememde
11:01
I was able to receive a B minus. Clap.
193
649373
2650
B eksi aldım. Alkış, lütfen.
11:04
(Applause)
194
652047
2240
(Alkış)
11:06
Thank you.
195
654311
1155
Teşekkürler.
11:07
So I really want to say thank you
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
to Anester Victory, Mr. Gatimu
196
655490
4410
Anester Zafer,
Bay Gatimu ve Anester cemiyetine
Bay Gatimu ve Anester cemiyetine
11:11
and the whole Anester fraternity
for giving me that chance.
for giving me that chance.
197
659924
3683
bu şansı bana verdikleri için
teşekkür etmek istiyorum.
teşekkür etmek istiyorum.
11:17
From time to time,
198
665084
1659
Arada sırada,
11:18
members of my family will insist
that my sister and I should get married
that my sister and I should get married
199
666767
4803
biri bizimle ilgilensin diye
aile üyelerimiz
aile üyelerimiz
kardeşimin ve benim
evlenmemiz konusunda ısrar ediyor.
evlenmemiz konusunda ısrar ediyor.
11:23
so that somebody will take care of us.
200
671594
2098
''Senin için bir erkek var''
11:26
They will say,
201
674722
1303
11:28
"We have a man for you."
202
676049
1348
derler.
11:30
I really hate the fact that people
took us as property rather than children.
took us as property rather than children.
203
678153
5440
İnsanların bizi çocuklardansa mülk gibi
algılamasından gerçekten nefret ediyorum.
algılamasından gerçekten nefret ediyorum.
11:36
Sometimes they will jokingly say,
204
684092
1995
Bazıları şakayla karışık
11:38
"You are going to lose your market value
205
686111
2112
''Eğitim aldıkça market değerini
11:40
the more educated you become."
206
688247
1678
kaybedeceksin.'' diyebilirler.
11:42
But the truth is,
207
690457
1982
Ama gerçek şu ki
11:44
an educated woman is feared
in my community.
in my community.
208
692463
3429
benim toplumumda eğitilmiş
kadından korkulur.
kadından korkulur.
11:47
But I told them, this is not what I want.
209
695916
1999
Fakat onlara bunu istemediğimi söyledim.
11:51
I don't want to get kids at 16
like my mother did.
like my mother did.
210
699056
2993
Annem gibi on altı yaşında
çocuklarım olsun istemiyorum.
çocuklarım olsun istemiyorum.
11:55
This is not my life.
211
703494
1597
Bu benim hayatım değil.
11:57
Even though my sisters
and I are suffering,
and I are suffering,
212
705528
2076
Kız kardeşlerimle birlikte
acı çeksek de
acı çeksek de
11:59
there's no way we are
heading in that direction.
heading in that direction.
213
707628
2528
o yönde ilerlemeyeceğiz.
12:02
I refuse to repeat history.
214
710528
2436
Tarihi tekrar etmeyi reddediyorum.
12:06
Educating a girl will create
equal and stable societies.
equal and stable societies.
215
714094
5148
Bir kızı eğitmek eşit ve kararlı
bir gelecek yaratır.
bir gelecek yaratır.
12:11
And educated refugees will be the hope
216
719266
4303
Eğitimli mülteciler ülkelerini
12:15
of rebuilding their countries someday.
217
723593
2865
bir gün tekrar kurmak için umut olacaklar.
12:18
Girls and women have
a part to play in this
a part to play in this
218
726956
3753
Kızlar ve kadınlar,
erkekler kadar
erkekler kadar
12:22
just as much as men.
219
730733
1821
bunun bir parçasıdır.
12:24
Well, we have men in my family
that encourage me to move on:
that encourage me to move on:
220
732578
3681
Ailemde beni
cesaretlendiren erkekler var,
cesaretlendiren erkekler var,
12:28
my half brothers and also my half sisters.
221
736283
2956
üvey erkek kardeşlerim
ve üvey kız kardeşlerim.
ve üvey kız kardeşlerim.
12:32
When I finished my high school career,
222
740726
1918
Liseyi bitirdikten sonra
12:35
I moved my sisters to Nairobi,
where they live with my stepsister.
where they live with my stepsister.
223
743285
5517
kız kardeşlerimi, üvey kız kardeşimin
yaşadığı Nairobi'ye götürdüm.
yaşadığı Nairobi'ye götürdüm.
12:41
They live 17 people in a house.
224
749411
2093
Bir evde on yedi kişi yaşıyorlar.
12:44
But don't pity us.
225
752138
1195
Sakın bize acımayın.
12:45
The most important thing
is that they all get a decent education.
is that they all get a decent education.
226
753935
5428
En önemli şey düzgün bir
eğitim almaları.
eğitim almaları.
12:53
The winners of today
227
761534
1546
Bugünün kazananları,
12:56
are the losers of yesterday,
228
764090
1907
dünün kaybedenleri
12:58
but who never gave up.
229
766557
1580
fakat asla vazgeçmeyenleridir.
13:00
And that is who we are,
230
768820
1889
Kız kardeşimin ve benim
13:02
my sisters and I.
231
770733
1393
olduğumuz şey bu.
13:04
And I'm so proud of that.
232
772150
2001
Bununla çok gurur duyuyorum.
13:06
My biggest investment in life --
233
774175
1781
Hayattaki en büyük yatırım--
13:07
(Applause)
234
775980
1040
(Alkış)
13:09
is the education of my sisters.
235
777044
2879
kız kardeşlerimin eğitimidir.
13:12
Education creates an equal and fair chance
for everyone to make it.
for everyone to make it.
236
780868
4668
Eğitim herkesin başarması için
eşit ve adil şans yaratır.
eşit ve adil şans yaratır.
13:18
I personally believe education
is not all about the syllabus.
is not all about the syllabus.
237
786128
3291
Bana göre eğitim
müfredattan ibaret değil.
müfredattan ibaret değil.
13:21
It's about friendship.
238
789841
1347
Arkadaşlıkla alakalı.
13:23
It's about discovering our talents.
239
791746
2235
Yeteneklerimizi keşfetmekle alakalı.
13:26
It's about discovering our destiny.
240
794005
3233
Kaderimizi keşfetmekle alakalı.
13:29
I will, for example, not forget
the joy that I had
the joy that I had
241
797914
2554
Örneğin, ben okulda ilk
şarkı söylediğimdeki zevki,
şarkı söylediğimdeki zevki,
13:32
when I first had singing
lessons in school,
lessons in school,
242
800492
2238
ki benim için hala tutkudur,
13:34
which is still a passion of mine.
243
802754
1643
asla unutmayacağım.
13:36
But I wouldn't have gotten that
244
804421
2057
Bunu başka bir yerde
13:38
anywhere else.
245
806502
1257
bulamazdım.
13:41
As a teacher, I see
my classroom as a laboratory
my classroom as a laboratory
246
809061
4407
Öğretmen olarak, sınıfımı sadece
yetenek ve bilgi oluşturan bir yer
yetenek ve bilgi oluşturan bir yer
13:45
that not only generates
skills and knowledge
skills and knowledge
247
813492
2945
olarak değil ayrıca
anlayış ve umudu oluştuğu
anlayış ve umudu oluştuğu
13:48
but also understanding and hope.
248
816461
2854
bir laboratuvar olarak görüyorum.
13:51
Let's take a tree.
249
819881
1285
Örneğin, ağacı ele alalım.
13:53
A tree may have its branches cut,
250
821894
2045
Dalları kesilebilir,
13:57
but give it water, and it will
grow new branches.
grow new branches.
251
825022
4429
fakat su verirseniz,
yeni dallar çıkar.
yeni dallar çıkar.
14:01
For the child of war,
252
829475
1603
Savaş çocukları için eğitim,
14:03
an education can turn their tears of loss
into a passion for peace.
into a passion for peace.
253
831102
6027
kayıpları yüzünden dökülen
gözyaşlarını barış tutkusuna çevirir.
gözyaşlarını barış tutkusuna çevirir.
14:09
And for that reason, I refuse to give up
on a single student in my class.
on a single student in my class.
254
837153
5010
Bu yüzden sınıfımdaki
hiçbir çocuktan vazgeçmeyeceğim.
hiçbir çocuktan vazgeçmeyeceğim.
14:14
(Applause)
255
842187
2316
(Alkış)
14:16
Education heals.
256
844527
1442
Eğitim iyileştirir.
14:19
The school environment
257
847079
2026
Okul ortamı
14:21
gives you a focus to focus ahead.
258
849129
3041
ileriye odaklanmanızı sağlar.
14:25
Let's take it this way:
259
853245
1323
Şunu ele alalım:
14:26
when you're busy solving
mathematical equations,
mathematical equations,
260
854592
2463
Bir matematik denklemini
çözerken ve şiir ezberlerken
çözerken ve şiir ezberlerken
14:29
and you are memorizing poetry,
261
857079
2285
meşgul olursunuz,
14:31
you forget the violence
that you witnessed back home.
that you witnessed back home.
262
859388
4071
yaşadığınız yerde şahit olduğunuz
şiddeti unutursunuz.
şiddeti unutursunuz.
14:35
And that is the power of education.
263
863931
3485
Bu eğitimin gücüdür.
14:39
It creates this place for peace.
264
867440
2850
Huzur için ortam yaratır.
14:42
Kakuma is teeming with learners.
265
870856
1969
Kakuma öğrenenlerle kaynar.
14:44
Over 85,000 students
are enrolled in schools here,
are enrolled in schools here,
266
872849
5177
Seksen beş binin üzerinde
çocuk burada eğitim alıyor,
çocuk burada eğitim alıyor,
14:50
which makes up 40 percent
of the refugee population.
of the refugee population.
267
878050
3547
ki bu da mülteci nüfusunun
yüzde kırkını oluşturur.
yüzde kırkını oluşturur.
14:54
It includes children who lost years
of education because of the war back home.
of education because of the war back home.
268
882040
6905
Bu sayı savaş yüzünden eğitim yıllarını
kaybetmiş çocukları da içeriyor.
kaybetmiş çocukları da içeriyor.
15:01
And I want to ask you a question:
269
889584
1895
Size bir soru sormak istiyorum:
15:04
If education is about
building a generation of hope,
building a generation of hope,
270
892568
4354
Eğer eğitim umut nesli
oluşturmakla alakalı ise
oluşturmakla alakalı ise
15:09
why are there 120 students
packed in my classroom?
packed in my classroom?
271
897754
4644
neden sınıfım yüz yirmi öğrenci
ile hınca hınç dolu?
ile hınca hınç dolu?
15:16
Why is it that only six percent
of the primary school students
of the primary school students
272
904288
4019
Neden ilköğretim
öğrencilerinin yüzde altısı
öğrencilerinin yüzde altısı
15:20
are making it to high school,
273
908331
